Cannonball In Europe! was recorded live on August 5, 1962 at the International Jazz Festival in Comblain-La-Tour, a small town in Belgium. The recent addition of legendary reedsman Yusef Lateef pushed Adderleys combo to a powerful sextet. With three horns blazing (Lateef, brother Nat Adderley on trumpet and Cannonball on alto sax), the band charged through a stunning concert in front of the largest audience it had ever played. The five song, 50 minute set blasts off with Lateefs complex "P.Bouk" and never lets up. Favorites "Gemini" and "Work Song" are played with fire and passion. And Lateefs soulful, moving oboe on the blues standard "Trouble in Mind" is stellar. But, its the frisky call and response between the reeds and horn, underpinned by Sam Jones sturdy bass, Louis Hayes energized drums and an understated Joe Zawinul on piano, that creates the fireworks that blasts this gig into the stratosphere. The reissue doesnt unearth any extra tracks, but the sound has been improved and newly penned liner notes describe the historical background to this superb show. --Hal Horowitz

Much awaited re-release. Includes the finest version of "Work Song"........2006-07-24
The session features probably what is regarded as Adderleys best ever version of "Work Song" (he did do quite a few of them)
THIS version just burns with intensity from the get go as Cannonball launches into the solo before the chorus has time to settle down and give way to it. On all other versions of "Work Song" Adderley takes some time to work up enough steam during the solo.
He flies as high as a kite on this tune. Yusuf Lateef plays soprano on "Trouble In Mind" and flute on "Gemini" and handles his part so efficiently that this almost is a Yusuf Lateef CD.
This proves to be one of the greatest sessions in that golden era of early 1960s jazz.
Cannonball Adderley truly was a soulful, dynamic saxophonist.
Blow of the roof withe the Adderley Bros.......2006-07-14
Great version of Work Song , P. Book and Gemini.
The crowd gone out of his mind withe this Belgian Tour.
Musicians are all in great form. Listen to a great Joe Zawinui and Nat Adderley.
