5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Jazz Guitar.......2006-08-01

I came across this gem on iTunes last month and have been absolutely mezmerized every since! I can't remember ever hearing a guitar player as good as Johnny Smith, and I've heard many, many guitarists in my 50 years on this planet.

This isn't hard-bop or blues-based music (in general), but it's just beautiful. Hank Jones is THE greatest piano player to accompany guitar players, bar none.

Please do yourself a huge favor and but this one ASAP!!

5 out of 5 stars The Sound Of The Johnny Smith Guitar.......2005-04-15

Tasteful playing with feeling is what this recording is. All the musicians are obviously concerned with musical elements such as BLEND and are no doubt concious of creating a jazz masterpiece, instead of merely demonstrating technical proficiency, (which is beautifully expressed on the entire album). The melodic approach of theme followed by extensive development make this recording a joy to listen to, over and over again. If you are interested in soulful renditions of timeless classics, you simply must include this recording in your collection. According to the CD back cover, this product is a 24-bit remaster of the original three track master, which in my opinion is very well done.

4 out of 5 stars What a sound - what taste - what a great player.......2003-09-05

I remember when my uncle - himself a jazz radio announcer - decided to let go of his LPs, and called me to come up to New York to get them. He had at least a thousand. I buried myself with them, and he watched as I threw aside the ones I already had or didn't think looked cool. After putting aside the Johhny Smith LP that makes up one-half of this CD, he stopped me. "Are you nuts?" I can still hear him saying, and he was a musician, also, "This is one of the best guitar players out there!" Here was a square looking guy with a crewcut, and the LP cover was nothing to write home about, but my uncle Sterling knew his jazz so I took it to humor him. Man, was I in for a suprise. The sound alone (he had a guitar named after him) was killer, and the licks seemed effortless. "Out Of Nowhere", and "Some Of These Days" knocked me out. Still not as well known as many lesser players, Smith never plays a superfluous note. He is a consummate pro. I haven't heard the second LP on this CD, so 4 stars, now.

5 out of 5 stars Just Perfect!.......2002-06-20

This is one of the best jazz guitar albums one can listen to. Johnny Smith is a master. No wonder all jazz guitar players are crazy about him.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Smith - Mr Jazz Guitar.......2002-01-03

If you are a collector or starting to build a collection of eclectic jazz guitar work, this album should find its way into your collection, easily. Like the majority of Johnny's work,
he shows time and again, that he belongs at the very top with the Jazz Guitar immortals. His cleanliness, speed and overall
versatility is always graced with his impecable taste and song
selection. There is alot of music here and all of it worth listening to over and over again. "Gypsy In My Soul" and 'Round Midnight' are two of my favorites here. Enjoy!
