The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes

Editorial Reviews

As Ornette Coleman said, "Charlie Parker was blessed with the eternal quality of existing forever." The brief trajectory of Parker's career has directly or indirectly affected all saxophonists who have followed him. Sadly, the machinations and pressures of fame were more than this basically fragile man could bear, and he died at age 34 in 1955.

The Savoy imprint, after being acquired by an assortment of companies over the years, has been reinvigorated to celebrate its 60th anniversary. This three-disc set includes all of Parker's work for the Dial and Savoy labels (excluding alternate takes--hence the title). It starts off with his appearance as a sideman with the Tiny Grimes Quintette, at which time the 24-year-old's alto saxophone playing bears his unmistakable stamp of fluidity and daring aplomb. The stellar lights of bebop are heard throughout this set, as Parker plays with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Max Roach, creating the enduring shape of contemporary jazz. --David Greenberger

For years, the audio quality of many of the performances gathered on these four CDs prevented a full-on embrace, what with all the other available Charlie Parker out there. But this collection restores these sessions to notoriety. They're mostly from New York's Royal Roost, 1948 to 1950, but with a 1947 Carnegie Hall supergroup concert and a 1950 Chicago pickup date that boasts some unknowns--and undersung guitarist George Freeman--with Parker. First, the single drawback: emcee and radio host "Symphony Sid" Torin's sometimes obsequious, faux-hipster shtick that bookends several of the tunes. Rest assured, though, Torin makes only brief intros and outros. Beyond that, these are all stellar works. The quintet on three of the CDs (the Royal Roost sessions) features Parker with Miles Davis on much of CD 1, highlighting the clipped fire of bebop's architecture being tunneled under by Davis's mellow-tone brass. Even when Kenny Dorham takes over on trumpet, the alchemy is built on contrast, Parker's raspy, fast wit and Dorham's wry (but often likemindedly fast) ripostes. Pianists Tadd Dameron and Al Haig make great showings, as does Max Roach, pushing the energy with a loose attack that defies the fact that the majority of these performances were for radio. The more-famed quintet fronted by Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and pianist John Lewis (famed cofounder of the Modern Jazz Quartet) closes the collection with five tunes from a 1947 Carnegie Hall concert. Parker seems more restrained, Gillespie gleeful, and Lewis characteristically spare. But the playing is first-rate, whether at light-speed (as on "Dizzy Atmosphere") or at the loping clip of "Groovin' High." --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Bird in his Natural Habitat: Live at the Royal Roost.......2007-01-09

Hearing Charlie Parker rip searing riffs on this Savoy set, while I imagine being among those lucky few who witnessed Bee Bop's prophet push the envelope at the Royal Roost, has taken me to whole new level of appreciation for the greatest jazz musician of our time. Live Parker recordings far surpass the studio ones because they allow the listener to hear the saxaphonist's pure power and genius. No editing, no muting, no time limit. Just pure, raw, genius. And this is the best live collection I've found of Parker's work. Some may argue that this collection is too raw in terms of sound quality, but I think that merely enhances the mystique and grit and authenticity of this incredible collection. This is a must-have for Ornithologists!

3 out of 5 stars The worst production by Orrin Keepnews........2006-08-31

This is the worst production by great producer Orrin Keepnews. Music on this 4-cd is great(5 stars). Parker in his peak period and many great musicians (Davis, Dorham, Roach, Milt Jackson) play great too. There are great performances like Ornithology, Confirmation, Salt penauts (with Parker's vocal), Chasin' the bird and many others.
But: Title of this box names COMPLETE live performances on Savoy and this is problem. Royal Roost performances on this box are everything but no complete. There are missing most announcement by Symphony Sid Torin, his talking with Parker, and mainly Parker and his band playing with Symphony Sid voiceover on many stuffs.
There are missing: 52nd street theme, Jumping with Symphony Sid, Jingle bells in many versions. This titles draw club's atmosphere in this era and performances are incomplete without them.
I get off this fake and will buy true Columbia/Nippon Royal Roost complet with similar sound quality I guess.
4th disc contains Carnegie Hall concert but better way is to buy Diz'n Bird at Carnegie Hall. It includes Gillespie with his orchestra performances also.
If you are true fan of Parker dont' buy this 4cd box. It's patch-work.

5 out of 5 stars The Parker Holy Bebop Jazz Trinity.......2004-08-04

Next to the studio Dial and Savoy, this set completes the Parker Holy Bebop Jazz Trinity. These live sessions, are pristine in compare with the Mosaic live set (that is important but only for those who have it all). If you play some instrument, you could learn from these live recordings and even develop your own individual style. I have been there. First, I just listened. Than, I started playing some of his tunes-compositions. I am still in the process of learning. You probably need a lifetime to study Parker's music in depth. On the other hand, you could just sit back and enjoy some fast, bluesy, sophisticated but lively and human playing: The watermark of a real musical genius.

5 out of 5 stars Supremely recommended.......2003-03-24

Anyone who wants to hear Charlie Parker, please start here, with these Savoy recordings. There is a unique coherence and consistency of place and time - bringing the performer-audience electricity of 50 years ago straight into your living room. You experience CP's invention of that music all over again. This is Bird, pure, straight, no chaser, not shaken, not stirred.
Over the last 30 years I have spent many hours listening to Charlie Parker, and his tunes are etched in my mind like musical sculptures, but these recordings have a lot to add to what I had already learnt. This is the best Bird I have heard.
I also have the highest regard for the beautifully informative and intelligent comments by Orrin Keepnews, Paul Bacon, and Loren Schoenberg.

5 out of 5 stars A broad interpretation of the word "complete.".......1999-06-15

Looks good, doesn't it? All the Roosts on four CDs. Looks mighty good. Then there's even more - recordings from Carnegie Hall in 1947 and Chicago in 1950. Still on four CDs. And you know the Roosts alone came out on four a few years back. Anyway...it looks good. And Orrin Keepnews, that dear leech, says "less is more," congratulating himself (again) on giving Symphony Sid the axe. What he doesn't mention, of course, is that an entire date from 1950 with Fats Navarro and Bud Powell has been similarly excised (vol. 3 of the old set, according to the Penguin guide). It should not even surprise, after all these years of being shafted by record companies, much less shock, and no-one will bat an eyelid when this stuff comes out again, even more complete(!), in a couple of years. But it's dishonest, it's self-serving, and particularly when Keepnews so tenaciously holds to painting himself into the picture of those who cared about jazz, it's disgraceful. Bird can have all the stars in the sky. Orrin gets none.

5 out of 5 stars the birth of modern misic........2005-10-11

I always thought that the Charlie parker on Savoy and Dial is the best performances except, At Messy Hall and may be the new discovery of Live In Town Hall. there is not much time to strach here but...every solo... taking by Bird shall be framed in GOLD....these are the famous takes that the detail trnscribtions are available in a book called the Charlie Parker Omni Book. If all the english language student have to read Shakepeer ..then every jazz musicicn should listen and study these recordings and then get the books and study every note that he played...this is the must study Shakspeer in jazz....this is the Birth Of Modern Music in entire world..!!forget about sound quality and other mother jazz...!!

5 out of 5 stars A Gem in the Rough.......2002-09-06

This "Best Of" collection may just be the ticket for all of those Bird fans who were upset by the slip-shod packaging of "The Complete Savoy and Dial Studio Recordings." These are unquestionably the recordings upon which the Charlie Parker genius and musical legacy must primarily rest, and the listener will not have to wade through dozens of alternate takes and false starts to discover the real Bird. The sound mastering, while distorted on a few tracks (the price of introducing more "presence" into the alto saxophone's sound), is the best I've encountered--in fact, the CD definitely eclipses the Ken Burns' single-disc compilation in terms of audio quality as well as song selection. My disappointment at the omission of "Donna Lee" is compensated for by the inclusion of both "Embraceable You" (the celebrated version) and "Night in Tunisia" (but not the concert version with Diz containing the famous 4-bar break).

Unlike some collectors, I find the fold-out cardboard container, with large-scale photos and ample notes, preferable to another broken plastic jewel case.

One caveat: Producer Orrin Keepnews' notes are written neither for the neophyte nor this single-disc down-sized edition. Aside from factual matters such as dates and personnel, they're pretty useless. The music, on the other hand (even as I'm now listening to Bird's bracing and brilliant playing), is simply priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Non-Completist Who Wants More Than The Hi-lights.......2007-01-29

I picked this up because I only had 2 Charlie Parker CDs in my collection and I call myself a jazz lover. I had the Best of The Live Sessions on Savoy and an older Best of Bird on Verve. As something of a Miles Davis collector I felt I needed more in order to get the full Miles Davis perspective, so I picked this collection. Anyone who knows jazz knows that the really good stuff by Parker happened during the Savoy years between 1945 and 1948. The Complete Savoy Master Takes gives the collector everything Parker released as a leader plus a Miles Davis session and a Tiny Grimes session. I don't need to hear everything that Bird did so I didn't want to shell out the bucks to get every single note he laid down for Savoy. Again, this is all of the stuff that was picked by the artist and producer for release to his adoring public back in the day and that's plenty for me. If there is one disappointment it is that there are no sessions here that include Milt Jackson. I have Jackson playing with Parker on some Royal Roost recordings. Maybe Jackson never recorded in the studio under Bird's leadership? I dunno. Other than that, it's splendid!

This set is attractively packaged and comes with a nice booklet with the usual liner notes and pictures.

The 20bit remaster is superb but one word of warning, it's impossible to remove all of the crackles from some of this stuff that was pulled from 78rpm acetate. Just keep that in mind when listening.

Buy this if you don't want everything but want more than a "best of" collection.

5 out of 5 stars Bible ''o'' Be-Bop.......2005-03-24

In 1945, Charlie Parker, along with Dizzy Gillespie got tired of the poppy swing of the early 40's and loosened up. They started playing faster than swing and soloed more. The result: a type of fiery jazz known as Be-Bop. It turned off swing audiences and the boys coming back from WWII, but the other jazz musicians who heard this new sound could understand what Diz and Bird were doing and soon audiences did too. These three discs showcase the legendary Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie at their best and a young Miles Davis. When most people think about jazz saxophone, they think John Coltrane. Well if there wasn't a Bird, there would not be a Trane. It's too bad that Bird self destructed in the 50's and died from Heroin related problems in 1955. In the big book on jazz released recently, it said that Bird was laughing, then choked and fell over and died. What a humorous way for a guy who was a jokester and always had a happy, laughing sound in his playing to pass into heaven. This great set documents the first steps of modern jazz...and the legend of Bird.

3 out of 5 stars Careful!.......2004-08-13

I just purchased this set, thinking that I was getting the best available compilation of Bird's early work. But, two days after getting it in the mail (and loving it), I discovered that JSP has out a Charlie Parker box set titled "Studio Chronicle 1940-1948," also available here on Amazon, which by all appearances is a far superior purchase. For only $28, you get 5 full discs worth of material, including a wealth of early recordings not included here, as well as a number of recording sessions not led by Parker (notably those under Dizzy Gillespie's name). Apparently some of these rarer recordings are hard to find elsewhere. Everything included on the present set is on that set as well. All in all you get almost twice the number of tracks (125 to 65) for nearly half the price. And, from what I've read, the sound quality on that set is actually marginally better. So, check out the JSP so you don't have to kick yourself like I am right now!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Charlie Parker!.......2003-10-14

There is probably no such thing as a "definitive" Charlie Parker
collection, without collecting EVERYTHING, but this comes awfully
close. These master takes of Bird's sessions as a leader for
the Savoy and Dial labels contain rich examples of his genius, and virtually every important title he did not record with Dizzy
Gillespie. Even before we get to the joys of "Billie's Bounce,"
"Warming Up a Riff," "Now's the Time," and "Ko-ko," we are treated to Bird's mastery on "Romance Without Finance." Besides
being one of the most politically INCORRECT songs ever recorded,
"Romance Without Finance" provides an excellent example of Parker's ability to rein in his prodigious abilities in the service of the song. Beyond that, everything here is just pure, unbridled inventive genius! The amazing thing about Bird's
playing is the way every phrase is a complete, perfect, self-contained musical idea, unique and independent to itself. Then,
suddenly in the last four bars of his solo, Bird comes up with something that makes all of it cohere, magically, brilliantly
and LOGICALLY. There's plenty of that kind of playing going on
throughout this entire collection!

5 out of 5 stars Bird.......2003-06-10

In a perfect world, this would be one of the 5 best selling jazz albums of all time. Why? Because Bird is one of the most influential and best jazz artist of all time and this collection includes every reason why. For a long time, it was a pain trying to collect these sides; and now, they all are in one place, with great sound in a nice package. It does not get any better than this, 50 years have passed and no one can touch Bird.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection.......2006-12-13

Not only do you get some exceptional studio material from Lester Young, but you also get a great set of live tracks recorded in Chicago ("Big Eye Blues" is an awesome slow blues). Don't let the large amount of alternate takes fool you. There were many great players, but Pres was one of those select few who could come up with something completely new from one take to the next, and Lester's ability to say so much with so few notes is unsurpassed. Lester can say more with a chorus or two than most sax players could with fifteen. It's not hard to understand why Charlie Parker studied Lester's recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, but..........2006-10-02

Lester Young is my favorite sax, so my review is highly biased - it's fantastic. The only problem is that the tracks on Disc 1 have a hitch in the order - "Empty Hearted" actually appears in Track #20, not #13, shifting all listed tracks, 14 - 20, by one, to 13 - 19.

5 out of 5 stars They Say You Can Tell How He Was Feeling From How He Sounded.......2006-01-04

recorded in 1944, 1949 and in 1950 this 2 CD set of the Savoy sessions boasts 20 bit sound and is a treat from a giant whose "sweet" swinging style, is often considered ethereal.
There are many Lester Young compilations out there and focusing on these Savoy sides with all the takes features him as a leader of his own group/small band, key soloist as well as dates with his "boss" Count Basie and other great magicians of the day.
Disc ones sides include Johnny Guarnieri All Star Orchestra 1944, and the Earl Warren Orchestra 1944,and Lester Young's Quintet 1944.
Disc two includes Lester Young's Sextet 1949 and Quintet sides live in Chicago 1950.

Erroll Garner was only 23 when the earliest tracks on this two-CD collection were cut. Yet the pianist never exhibits tentativeness, regardless of the tune, the tempo, or the troupe he's working with. Dating from the winter of 1945 to the summer of 1949, these selections mark some of Garner's earliest professional efforts. You wouldn't know it by listening to his playing, however. With the exception of four tunes recorded while he was still a member of the Slam Stewart Quartet, Garner works in a trio setting here, essaying a selection of standards with a freshness that is utterly invigorating. Capable of being alternately playful or reflective (while resisting the temptation to be either coy or self-absorbed), the Pennsylvania-born virtuoso displays the breadth of his talents and tastes on back-to-back exhibitions such as the pensive yet crisp "A Cottage for Sale," followed by the jaunty, utterly delightful "This Can't Be Love." Given that the 41 tracks included here represent Garner's full Savoy output (alternate takes excepted), this collection is essential for fans of jazz piano. --Steven Stolder

the only downfall is that the booklet does not list full sessionographical/discographical information. if someone could post that info here (or which book it would be in) I'd appreciate it...

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB PERFORMANCE FROM YOUNG ERROLL GARNER!.......2000-03-22

This Savoy Master Takes collection(1945-1949) represents one of the best periods in Garner's career. His "signature" was already in place at that time (You cannot say that of many jazz pianist, since it takes a lot of years when their music is clearly identified).

Most songs at that time were limited to three minutes maximum (Due to the 78 RPM recordings). Erroll demonstrated-under this time restriction- to provide outstanding improvisation ("The Man I Love") as well as swing ("Indiana", "Undecided", "Stompin' at the Savoy", just to name a few examples).

It seems to this writer that Erroll was "carrying" those melodies so smoothly that it was very delighted to listen to them-over and over.

In general, it's worth adding this Savoy set (Two discs) to your collection, regardless of the the out of tune piano used in a few of the songs.

Johnny Otis is best known for his 1956 rock & roll hit "Willie and the Hand Jive." But Otis--the son of Greek immigrants who chose to be personally and professionally identified as black--had enjoyed a successful career as a West Coast jazz drummer and R&B bandleader dating back to the mid-'40s. In 1950 alone, he scored three No. 1 R&B hits. This three-disc set collects all his recordings for Savoy between 1949 and 1952, as well as a handful of earlier sides, beginning with his 1945 version of "Harlem Nocturne." The set traces the evolution of Otis's style from big-band jazz toward earthier blues and R&B. "Little" Esther Phillips was featured on Otis's biggest hit, "Double Crossing Blues." Other lead singers in the ongoing Caravan (and on this collection) included Mel Waters (who recalls Charles Brown with a lighter vocal tone), the doo-wop group the Robins, and Linda Hopkins. Guitarist Pete Lewis, saxophonist Big Jay McNeely, and Otis himself on vibraphone are crucial instrumental contributors. Despite Rhythm and Blues Caravan's zoot-suit trappings, there is a dreamy innocence and humor to this music that's largely missing from contemporary R&B. There's also an endearing strangeness that served as a formative influence on the young Frank Zappa, among others. --Rick Mitchell

If you like jump/R&B/jazz style, this is great stuff. BUT...
Before you buy this set, check out Midnight at the Barrelhouse on JSP. It has every cut on this set (except for Hunter Hancock's Theme) + a lot more cuts + the JSP set costs less.

5 out of 5 stars This caravan is the real deal........2000-11-28

Over three hours of early R&B bliss. What can I say, if you like the style, this 3 CD set offers heaven! Over 3 hours and 77 songs of the hottest 40's 50's R&B scene. If you couldn't be at the Barrelhouse in Watts when it was happening , this set at least gives you a feel for what the music and players were like. I put this on and can listen all day/night long. It never grows tiring. Sexy solos, great riffs, hot rhythym, you name it, this set has it all.

Thanks to Atlantic/Savoy Jazz for this gift to music lovers everywhere.
