Steamin' With the Miles Davis Quintet

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Steamin' is the last of the classic albums Prestige Records released from various sessions trumpeter Miles Davis recorded between November 1955 and October 1956 with his historic "first" quintet, including tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Together with Cookin' (also available in an audiophile format), Relaxin' (also available in an audiophile format), and Workin' (also available in an audiophile format), Steamin' completes a series of memorable recordings masterfully engineered by Rudy Van Gelder that remains a definitive manifesto from the hard-bop era. One dynamic that gave this quintet its distinctive edge is the contrast between Davis's introspective playing on ballads ("When I Fall In Love," "Something I Dreamed Last Night") and Coltrane's hard-blowing passion ("Salt Peanuts," "Well You Needn't"). Another is the interplay between Garland, Chambers, and Jones, who are not only consummate accompanists, but all-star soloists as well. The version of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" here is a quintessential performance by this remarkable quintet. --Mitchell Feldman

You just about can't go wrong with Miles Davis. I especially liked his version of Salt Peanuts.

4 out of 5 stars If you don't love it at first, hang in there.......2006-09-17

When the Miles Davis Quintet got together to record four albums worth of material, they naturally recorded a lot of standards. Steamin' has four standards, a song by Dizzy and a song by Monk. My initial reaction was that the quality of the material depending on the quality of the song they chose. After continuing to listen to it, though, the playing by the group shone through clearly. So, is this album as good as, say, Milestones? No. Is this better than most jazz albums? Definitely yes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and accessible.......2005-05-25

This is one of four albums compiled from two days of recording in 1955, and all four contain highly satisfying, entertaining jazz music. Davis's developing trumpet sound is distinctive and beautiful, and these are the recordings that put John Coltrane on the map (he didn't release anything under his own name until a few years later). Steamin' is mostly mellow music, although "Salt Peanuts" is a kick in the face, with a fast tempo and a long drum solo. This is highly recommended for anyone with more than a passing interest in Miles Davis.

5 out of 5 stars Desert moon album.......2004-11-03

I'm going to the moon tomorrow and I'm not coming back. Unfortunately, I'm only allowed to bring one album along. This is it. The ironic thing is I'm a huge rock fan. This album is that good. There had to be divine intervention or something when this album was recorded. Sittin on the lip of a crater in the Sea of Tranquillity and gazin back on the shimmering Earth will be that much more sweeter with this beautiful ambiance 'Steamin' through my headphones.

5 out of 5 stars With the Fringe on Top.......2004-10-18

For many years I have nursed a belief that My Funny Valentine on Cookin' was the single best piece of jazz music ever recorded on CD. Some crises of faith-- Lester Young's This Year's Kisses, Dave Brubeck's Take Five, etc.-- had challenged this conviction, but for the first time I think I may have a conversion.

Miles Davis's trumpet on Surrey With The Fringe on Top on this CD is the best that I have ever heard. It is physically impossible for anybody with a soul to be upset while listening to the first 35 seconds of this song.

STEAMIN' INDEED! Holy Batsh*t Batman, this jams. . . I've heard this recording dozen times, but NOT LIKE THIS! It freakin' LEAPS OUT AT YOU. I don't know what Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab is exactly, but this Ultradisc UHR SACD is the best SACD I have ever heard - a vast improvement over any CD edition I have heard thus far. . .
