Wonderfully played chamber version of Das Lied von der Erde.......2006-11-01
Caveat: This is the Schoenberg-Riehn chamber - *not* Mahler's original orchestral - version of DLvdE. So for example, a piano replaces much of the original percussion instruments like funereal tam-tams in Der Abschied. Everything in the original is shorn down here and the transparency of the work becomes even more evident. Minimalist, almost anti-thetical to Mahler's "a symphony should be like the world" idea. No matter! - it's brilliantly played by Herreweghe & co., and the Remmert and Blochwitz are amongst the best DLvdE singers to my ears. And at budget price, this CD is practically a steal for those who love (the original) DLvdE. I would recommend those new to DLvdE to listen to Mahler's original *first* - many fine classic recordings of this exist e.g., Ludwig/Wunderlich/Klemperer (EMI), Baker/Kmentt/Kubelik (Audite), Hodgson/Mitchinson/Horenstein (BBC), etc. Even though I much prefer Mahler's original version - I'll hang on to this one for its alternative & wonderful musicianship.

This is the real thing!.......2006-08-21
This is a great album from the master of the vibes. It has it all. Some beautiful sounds - 'Til Then', 'My Joy'. Some avant garde - 'Oblique' and 'Bi-Sectional'. Bobby is great, but the supporting cast is awesome. Herbie Hancock as always, is fantastic. Joe Chambers provides the drive on drums, and also contributes a couple of fine compositions - 'Oblique' and 'Bi-Sectional'. I was not familiar with Albert Stinson, the bassist, but he has a beautiful, fat sound, much like Bob Cranshaw. What a tragedy that he died shortly after this recording. And that is another thing. The recorded sound is rich and detailed. This is one of the best 'RVG' editions. I put it up there with Hank Mobley's 'Soul Station' as far as sound quality. Maybe because it was a quartet too and there is more 'space' for the individual instruments. At any rate, musically and sonically, 'Oblique' is a treasure.
Beautiful.......2006-07-23
This is really beautiful music. Im not sure why it wasnt originally released until 13 years after the recording date. It deserved to have been released immediately. Herbie Hancock and Bobby complement each other perfectly. Bobby's vibes playing, particularly in the title tune, is technically and melodically beyond belief. He plays lines on the vibes that are exquisite and very demanding. Bi-Sectional features some very accessible free playing that is a joy to listen to. The bass playing of Albert Stinson is also of note. He plays brilliantly throughout the entire album and would have continued to had his life not been tragically cut short. Joe Chambers also provides excellent support and contributions to the set including 'Til Then. This song is of jazz standard quality. All in all, this album is, to use the well-worn cliche, excellent. To me it conjures up images of the night, and other unexplainable emotions. I cant tell you to buy it, but if you feel the way i do when you hear Bobby Hutcherson's vibes playing, you should.
Precision, Beauty.......2006-05-23
Hancock and Hutcherson fit together so well on this date that it sounds like a single man with four arms playing. The recording is also breathtaking: listen to it loud on a suuround system and you'll hear what I mean. Plus, "My Joy" and "Til' Then" are two of Hutcherson's best compositions. Equal parts thorny and exquisite. Not quite the masterpiece that "Dialogue" is, but why carp?
An Essential and Intriguing Blue Note Treasure.......2005-09-18
This remarkable 1967 recording, previously only available as a Japanese import, can be seen as a follow-up to the brilliant quartet setting of Hutcherson's "Happenings," with the virtuosic and tragically short-lived Albert Stinson replacing Bob Cranshaw on bass. Of particular strength is the cut "My Joy," which begins by pairing a delicate, haunting melody in triple meter against drummer Joe Chambers' backbeat of "four," then suddenly morphs into something dissonant, fast-paced and furious. Fans of Herbie Hancock will appreciate the inclusion of his catchy and propulsive "Theme from Blow Up," evocative of "Maiden Voyage," and will enjoy his lyrical soloing on the Hutcherson-penned bossa "Til Then," bringing to mind his sublime "Speak Like a Child." This is an album of profound depth and beauty.
Nothing Oblique About "Oblique".......2005-08-17
Bobby Hutcherson's "Dialogue" is an undisputed modern jazz masterpiece, but in the last twenty years, the average fan would have been hard pressed to locate a second Blue Note album by the vibraphonist. Yes, many of his albums have been available as limited edition titles in the Connoisseur Series, or briefly at the dawn of the CD era before drifting out-of-print. But only with the recent reissue of "Oblique" in the RVG Edition Series (with different cover art than the original CD I might add), has another Hutch disc finally received a permanent place in the EMI catalog. This July 21, 1967 session features three Hutcherson originals, Herbie Hancock's "Theme from Blow Up" -- the album's catchiest tune -- and two compositions by Joe Chambers, the title track and "Bi-Sectional." Chambers' writing talents have always amazed me for both their creativity and complexity (from a drummer, who knew?), and his contributions here are the album's best. However, Hutch's numbers have grown in stature as well from the days of "Components" and "Happenings" (he penned nothing on "Dialogue"), particularly on the opener "Til Then." Of final interest to jazz aficionados is the presence of Albert Stinson, a bass virtuoso who died of a drug overdose in 1969 and left us precious few recordings. A delightful disc, there is nothing oblique about "Oblique."

pass the cheese, please.......2007-01-20
It is well known that Faure never ate a piece of cheese in his life. he would often sit for days in his lounge and gaze disgustedly at the kitchen door. knowing his moldy socks were enough to satisfy his penseés de fromage, friends who knew him swear they saw pieces of Ritz crackers in his boots. while his music became celebrated, ( even the vampires living beneath l'Opera cheered when his magic baton took to the stale air) his mood became not unlike a fall fungus from auvergne. He never went fishing, and it is quite a paradox that he would write for the fishermen of Villerville. Perhaps it was meant to be an ode to the great peaches of Villerville, known throughout the North Sea as "les instruments de l'amour" (roughly, nookie cookies).

Unusual music but very good quality.......2007-05-24
This was very good music and vocal. Only probloem was the words are in French without a libretto to guide you.
A very fine and natural sounding recording of this masterpiece.......2006-09-13
I bought this recording some years ago now, ten years ago, I think. I have listened to it fairly regularly ever since. Schoenberg's music isn't always easy to get to know. Classical radio stations don't often schedule his music - the three radio stations which play "Classical" music in my city, Adelaide, don't often play Schoenberg or Berg or Webern, the other members of the Second Viennese School. So my knowledge of the music of Schoenberg has largely come via my own efforts and my music teacher at high school, Ms Arianna Dobbie, who presented us with Serialism one year - via the Piano Variations of Webern. I still love that work.
Marianne Pousseur and the Ensemble Musique Oblique, directed by Philippe Herreweghe, present us with a very warm and natural sounding Pierrot Lunaire. Mademoiselle Pousseur is not a conventional "Classical" singer, she seems to be more of what we may call a "chanteuse" - a nightclub singer. This is probably exactly what Schoenberg wanted, because Pierrot Lunaire really is a kind of cabaret piece, albeit very sophisticated and "cerebral" cabaret! Schoenberg even suggests that the singer might wear a Pierrot costume while performing the work. It is a pity Ute Lemper has never been lured into recording this work!
However, Marianne Pousseur does an admirable job of interpreting the poems of Albert Giraud and Schoenberg's rather loose vocal lines.
Ensemble Musique Oblique provide us with a very colourful and stylish interpretation of the music and the experience of the maestro, Philippe Herreweghe, in period instrument / HIP music making informs this recording.
The Kammersymphonie, op. 9, transcribed by Anton Webern, is a very attractive piece of music. It is one not easily engaged with, like some of Schoenberg's piano music, but it is worth the effort.
All things considered, this is an excellent CD, but one in which the listener has to do a little work to "get at". For those who are new to Schoenberg and Pierrot Lunaire, I cannot recommend the 'One Night. One Life' DVD, with Christine Schäfer, too highly. It really brought Schoenberg to life for me. Ms Schäfer's CD recording with Pierre Boulez on DG is also excellent. Christine Schäfer is more of a conventional soprano and those who prefer a more "Classical" singer in the Pierrot Lunaire may prefer her to the less Classically "cultivated" voice of Marianne Pousseur. I like both.
Seems like the best choice to me.......2004-05-01
If you're like me, you want to like these pieces but find most recordings too painful to listen to. I partially agree with the famous comment that Schoenberg's music isn't so bad, its just often played badly. Even some highly regarded recordings can't seem to make this music as enjoyable as it could be. Some kind of difficult balance is needed between the romantic and radical elements of the music, the recorded sound must be clear but not too dry, and singers who perform Pierrot Lunaire are up for a difficult challenge.
Being familiar with Herreweghe's fine early music work and this group's recording of Schoenberg's orchestration of Mahler's Das Lied, I had cause for optimism for both performances and sound quality on this recording, and I was not disappointed at all. The sound is typical of Harmonia Mundi's high standards with small chamber groups, providing excellent ambience and balance between soloists. Pousseur can be clearly heard but is never over-projected, and her vocal technique seems completely natural and appropriate for Schoenberg's demands.
Pierrot Lunaire is possibly the most Webernesque piece in Schoenberg's ouvre. While Schoenberg gets more attention as leading innovator of the 2nd Viennese movement, I've always preferred Webern's more minimal approach to atonalism. Again, however, good Webern recordings are scarce, and so I am happy that this group decided to record Webern's transcription of Schoenberg's 1st Chamber Symphony. The result is a lighter and more ingratiating listening experience than this piece usually offers.
Given the budget price, this Pierrot and the Chamber Symphony make a recommended choice for particular Schoenberg/Webern listeners like myself.

The original and best ?.......2000-11-03
Faure's lovely and beloved setting of the Requiem Mass is probably best known to most people through the full orchestral score of 1901,and although in this form it is perfectly entrancing and bewitching,it has long been known that Faure wasn't that heavily involved in it's preparation:perhaps merely giving the nod to his publisher who wanted to make the work more of a going concern by marketing it as a fully scaled up concert hall entity. Therefore, how refreshing it is to get right back to the basics of the masterpiece's genesis of 1887,and it's eventual coalescence to paradisiacal completion by 1894.We have the distinguished musicologist Jean-Michel Nectoux to thank for his detective work in uncovering the previously unknown source material, which, with the assistance of the conductor Roger Delage he has prepared for use in this revelatory recording.
The resulting performance under the sensitive and tender direction of Philippe Herreweghe simply oozes with a refined spirituality and cool, clear clarity of style that is absolutely captivating, and I'm sure that like me,you will soon come to regard this wonderful CD as a cherished cornerstone of your collection.I've lived with it for nearly a decade now,and I love it as much today as I did then.In fact,I've only just bought a second copy of it,even though the original still plays perfectly well.Basically,I simply hate the thought of been without this disc even for a day,and so I'm keeping the replacement on imminent "standby" should a fault ever arise in that venerable old treasure !
To my ears almost nothing is really sacrificed or lost by paring away all these later additions of the turn of the last century.Granted some of the grandeur and drama is somewhat diluted, but that's not a criticism on my part at all. After all there is no law that says you have to restrict yourself to just one version of this gorgeous work, and I should know, because I once owned 8 (!) separate performances at one time, and they ALL had marvellous things to say to me.So why not indulge yourself too,and buy two or three different interpretations, and alternate them as your mood dictates--it's always worked for me !
Anyway, back to the outstanding qualities of this particular record:those sparser instrumental textures are brilliantly executed by the ladies and gentlemen of the Ensemble Musique Oblique, and special mention for the horns who come into greater prominence now in places like the mesmeric "Hostias" where they provide a lovely burnished accompaniment to Peter Kooys fine baritone solo, and also in the "In Paradisum" where they further enchance already heavenly textures.
Agnes Mellon will be a name that you will soon come to venerate once you have heard her stunningly, radiant "Pie Jesu".She has a soprano voice of a rare child-like innocence that you will take immediately to heart, and her performance is one to rank alongside the greatest;and sometimes I really feel her's is the best of all.
Talking about child-like innocence,I couldn't not mention the charming contribution of the "Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Louis" (even their Choir's name deserves a round of applause !).They are used to reinforce the upper voices in the splendid adult choir of La Chapelle Royale Paris, and they really do take an already otherworldy and ethereal Choral element into even higher planes of celestial sweetness and light.
What an inspired choice for a coupling to the main item is the deliciously blithe and bonny,"Messe des Pecheurs de Villerville" that Faure co-wrote with Andre Messager in 1881,as a kind of charitable contribution to a fund supporting these eponymous Normandy fishermen. There is some lovely sunny and unpretentiously engaging music to be enjoyed here, and I found myself really taken with Messager's excellent writing for the strings in his "Kyrie" and "O Salutaris".He more than holds his own against his blessed colleague, and I'm sure will send you off on a tangent to explore his other compositions. It won't be a wasted journey--let me tell you that for nothing.
I could go and on about the further desirability of this magical CD from Harmonia Mundi way past the 1000 word limit of the review strictures, but instead of trying yours and Amazon's patience,I'll sign off by saying that there are many, many performances of this Heavenly masterpiece that will enchant and beguile you, without a shadow of a doubt, but this is one of the few that succeed in transcending that elusive barrier between entertainment and ecstasy.Don't you rest until this superb CD is safely sepulchered on your shelves !
SIMPLY ENTHRALLING.......2000-07-08
I already own a copy of Faure's ravishing "Requiem" (Dutoit conducting Te Kanawa & Milnes with the Montreal Symphony on London) but after listening to Herreweghe's truly superb Bach recordings, I wanted to see what his approach to more "modern" music would be. I have only had the Herreweghe in my home for two full weeks but have listened to it over one dozen times. It is simply enthralling: everything about it, from the cover art, to the essays, to the choice of a companion piece for the "Requiem" (Faure & Messager's "Mass of the Villerville Fishermen")to the superb chorus and soloists (no starry names here) and orchestra. This is a recording to treasure.
By the end of it, you're in Heaven!.......1998-10-04
In a nutshell, this recording demonstrates the greatness of Grabiel Faure. It also happens to demonstrate the sensetive genious of Herreweghe. The sound is beautiful. The choruses are beautiful. The pace is perfect. By the time you hear the 7th track you'll really be in Paradisium!

David Torn / Vernon Reid / Elliot Sharp.......2002-06-17
Some people may think this CD sounds like "marbles in a blender". I on the other hand, heard nothing of the sort. What I heard was terrific, hard-core Fusion, played by three great musicians. Killer CD. Maybe that person was looking for something different in this CD, possibly Pop, or Top 40 type music. I don't know why you look for this in David Torn. If you like the hard-hitting guitar style of David Torn, you will like this CD, "GTR OBLQ".

Anyone who has heard Vernon Reid on Ronald Jackson's albums or Torn on some of his solo CD's would have expected a lot from this collaboration. They would be disappointed. These songs are virtually impossible to listen to. I would prefer to hear the sound of marbles in a blender. Melody anyone?
