Finnish phenom Johanna Grüssner possesses a voice of such quality that her performances virtually define the standard for jazz vocals today. She used this extraordinary talent to influence a remarkable group of students to emerge from the shadows of a public school in the Bronx, revealing a passion for music that astounded school officials and impressed audiences. Johanna Grüssners story has been featured on NPR, and in the book Seven Days of Possibilities by author Anemona Hartocollis. No More Blues is produced by 32-time GRAMMY nominee, John Snyder. In his 30-year career, Snyder has worked with a virtual who's who of modern jazz Jim Hall, Paul Desmond, Ornette Coleman, Dave Brubeck, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra and Charlie Haden.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Anyone who's purchased one of Mary J. Blige's albums understands that the "queen of hip-hop soul" would much rather push artistic envelopes than lick 'em. With No More Drama, her enlisting of hip-hop's finest beat-makers to create lush musical soundscapes is nothing short of genius. On the Dr. Dre-produced "Family Affair," Blige implores the club set to "get crunk 'cause Mary's back" as she introduces some new slang to the hip-hop vernacular ("holleration"). "Steal Away" is a classic Neptunes-induced head-nodder in the "Love Is All We Need" vein, as Pharrell Williams chimes in a Curtis Mayfield-like falsetto. Those who like their R&B straight might be offended by the acoustic guitar solo by Lenny Kravitz on "PMS," or the album's title track, which samples the theme from The Young and the Restless soap opera. But listen to "Where I've Been" (a redemptive tale of Blige's not-so-rapid ascent from the 'hood, featuring guest raps from Eve) and the Missy Elliott-assisted "Never Been," and misgivings vanish. Whereas past Mary J. efforts were limited to tales of relationships gone awry, her outlook is more diverse and upbeat, while her scratchy, bluesy vocals have become more expansive, too. She raps on "Love," scats on "Beautiful Day," chats on the a cappella "Forever No More," and caps No More Drama with a string of uplifting ballads ("2 U," "In the Meantime"), neatly polishing off a release that will stand as one of the best of 2001. --Dalton HigginsCustomer Reviews:

..beautiful!.......2006-12-29
I actually like the original version a little bit better. I would recommend finding the original and buying it along with this one. This re-release is still great and the new songs keep the quality and integrity of the album. (That is very rare with re-issues.)
I definitely recommend this, along with the original if you can find it. This is one of my all time favorite albums.
One of her greatest.......2006-07-17
Bringing Realism Back Into The R&B World.......2006-06-14
NO MORE DRAMA opens up bombastically with the hit though too short in duration "Love" in which Mary J. Blige asserts her role as the queen of hip-hop soul. Perhaps what the draw is here is the catchy chorus in which the background vocals say each letter in the word "LOVE" using it as an irregular acronym in a sense. Following the opening anthem is perhaps Blige's best known universal hit and her only #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, "Family Affair". It is what it is, just an exceptional track with exceptional productions and seering vocals. "He Think I Don't Know" has the queen talking about a man thinking his women is stupid of what he is doing and stupid in general. While the song is long and drawn out, it is an irresistable listen. One of the real treats comes with "PMS" which uses a sample of the Al Green Soul classic "Simply Beautiful". Blige is at her most soulful. Later on, the Soap Opera theme sampled "No More Drama" is great with a hip-hop beat and painful-soul renching vocals from MJB. Finally, "Testimony" is a great, uplifting track and shows a more cheerful Blige.
Overall, this album is a production masterpiece with a number of samples and soulful hip-hop backdrops for Blige to paint with her incredibly soulful voice. Overall, it isn't the masterpiece of THE BREAKTHROUGH, but it is an incredibly strong album, period. 4 stars.

No More Blues - Johanna Grussner.......2007-02-17
Bossa nova rhythm has always been my favourite and their interpretation of "Desafinado" will not disappoint others with similar taste for the rhythm. If you are looking for some variety in jazz, this album is a good choice.
Johanna 5 Stars Sound engineer 0.......2006-12-01
Johnanna's name is the only name on the album, and it is deservedly above the title. But this album is mixed so badly that the instruments are most of the time as loud/louder than the singer. Unfortunately, I have heard this mistake made so many times, and it sickens me every time I encounter it. Another thing, she doesn't sing enough on the cuts vis a vis her sidemen. I hope that this wasn't her fault.
It seems Ms. Grussner has been mistreated by her engineers, and by her sidemen. I hope she did not have final say on the mix. I would love to hear this album properly mixed and re-released that way. She deserves to be completely front and center on this, and on all her albums.
Johanna Grussner at her very best!.......2006-08-14

Johanna Grussner's "No More Blues",I fell in love

So Beautiful.Very,Very,Beautiful!
Simply very cool.......2006-05-29
These songs all arranged by the singer are each innovative, sensual, relaxing and extraordinarily well performed.
This isn't the usual brand of "jazz" singers in recent years that have wonderful voices but do tired arrangements of Gershwin and other great songs. This CD brings new life to these songs just when you thought the last Monheit, Krall Bentyne etc CD buried the song for another generation.
This CD is one of the coolest of its genre in quite a while. Just wait til you hear the fretless bass solo in "Help". Very cool indeed...
I love this album!.......2005-01-29
The immediate standouts on the disc are Out of This World, which is absolutely fantastic, and the title track No More Blues.
The down-tempo version of Help is naturally instantly recognizable and I actually prefer it to the original.
Another of my favorites is the English-language version of Desafinado. If you're not familiar with the song, also check out the excellent Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz and João Gilberto.
I have had this album for about two months now and it's still in my CD-changer in the car where few discs stay for more than a week straight. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone and am looking forward to Johanna's next release.

Dudek- The Silent Perfectionist.......2003-03-26
As some of the afore mentioned revues have said, this is long over due. Les Dudek showed the American rock listening crowd that funky, bluesy straight-ahead rock-n-roll with a southern twist could help your Friday night get out and party mode.
A very under-rated artist with 4 lps under his belt,Les Dudek can definetly work his music into you and back out and leave you wondering " WOW!! did I just hear what I thought I heard ?. So you 70's compiling record CEO's quit wondering if it's going to sell or not. Just Do It.
Every musical artist deserves a second heyday in their career. Like us consumers say every now and then,"What ever happened to so and so? Who da man? DUDEK be the MAN. Buy "Say No More". It's all that's out there right now, but very much worth it.
Take care,

Before John Mellencamp recorded his classic Scarecrow, he learned hundreds of classic rock covers from the '60s. Here the Indiana troubadour ventures back to the very roots of American popular music, learning traditional songs associated with the likes of Robert Johnson, Son House, Howlin' Wolf, and Woody Guthrie. The result is Mellencamp's rawest album to date, updating the acoustic sounds of those early idioms for modern times while keeping them firmly rooted in tradition. In that sense, it's not unlike his hero Bob Dylan's two country-blues cover albums from the mid-'90s--though the ever-mischievous Mellencamp has a little fun with his definitions here, paying tribute to his Hoosier background by covering Bloomington native Hoagy Carmichael's "Brooklyn Oriole" and Lucinda Williams's 1980 ode to "Lafayette," while pulling a beautiful stark version of Skeeter Davis's wonderful 1963 country-pop ballad "End of the World" out of left field. The former James Brown impersonator has never sang better. The album closes with "To Washington," credited to Mellencamp, but actually a "borrowed blues" that's been used to address political figures as far back as Calvin Coolidge when recorded by Charlie Poole, the Carter Family, and Guthrie. This time, the song addresses one George W. Bush and surely won't gain Mellencamp any new fans among those who'd support a Dixie Chicks boycott. --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:

Disregard the Bad.......2007-01-15
I think he has an awesome voice. The music is not too slow and has a nice beat. And there is nothing wrong with singing about heartbreak. I would prefer that over some of the dirtier lyrics out there. That is what musicians do. They sing about what is going on in their lives. It's alot better then cookie cutter songs made to do nothing more then please a crowd. I prefer to listen to music with substance.
Well I Never!.......2006-08-05
"Never Really Was" is a lazy track. The lyrics, production and vocals are all subpar. The chorus is alright, but the song as a whole, I can take it or leave it, and leave it is looking stronger than take it. "Pretty Girl" is anohter example of how weak this album is. This song is about a woman who puts her man through hell, and thinks she can get away with it because she's pretty. Foxy is the only decent sound on this bad song. "You Knew" is the worst song on this lackluster album. It's terrible! It features Slim from 112, and since he and Mario Winans both have whiny voices, it makes this song practically unlistenable. The words "you knew" are repeated throughout the song and it does nothing but irritate the listener. "I Don't Waana Know" was this album's only release. This song is OK. I never really liked it while the radio stations were playing it, and I'm still not crazy about it. This song is about a man not wanting to know if he is being cheated on because it would hurt him too much.
I don't suggest anyone pick this album up, not even Diddy/Bad Boy fans because Diddy usually does a better job than this. But now that I think about it, he was getting his clothing line started and doing many other things when this album was released, so next time he should put some things on the back burner and focus on his artist so he can create the quality work he is infamous for.

DO NOT listen to what people say, decide for yourself! GREAT CD!.......2005-08-12
I know music, been writing music for years now. Music is my life. When it comes to buying R&B music, I love to go out in a limb and buy someones CD I've never even heard of, in this case I only heard the one song on the radio.
Now if you DO NOT like this CD or Mario Winans it's because you dont like his style of singing which DOES NOT make him a horrific singer/artist in any way.
His style is in a class of its own which is ONLY a good thing because it makes his work UNIQUE! This is ONLY contains songs about him getting hurt however, so some people say STOP WHINNING. This is a GREAT cd regardless. Id like to see you fools go through a heartbreak and make a better, more real cd.
ALL IN ALL, AWESOME CD. Decide for yourself.

The Real Thing.......2004-09-07
In any case, the vocals are strong, the guitar is great and the recording (or remastering) quality is even better. Well, that is, it is much better than some remasters that I have listened to. The "less is more" approach of Estes once again proves that you don't have to perform left-hand acrobatics on the neck to play the blues. On the contrary, the sound always comes first, one note could do much more to bring tears to your eyes rather than 64 1/64 notes crammed into a second.
If you like acoustic blues, this is definitely a must for your shelf.
Magnificent Tennessee blues.......2004-01-25
The period covered by this CD was John Adams Estes' best and most creative, cathing him at the height of his considerable powers. He usually recorded with a jug band, which gave his music a great variety of textures...mandolin player James "Yank" Rachell and harpist Hammie Nixon are prominent on most of these songs, and Estes is occationally backed by piano and second guitar as well.
Big Bill Broonzy called Estes' singing style "crying" because of his emotional delivery and light tenor voice, but there is nothing morose or self-pitying about John Estes' music. It swings with a loose, relaxed feel that isn't heard on many prewar blues records, and it is some of the most melodic acoustic blues you'll ever hear.
"I Ain't Gonna Be Worried No More" contains all-time classic blues tunes like "The Girl I Love, She Got Long Curly Hair", "Someday Baby Blues", and "Diving Duck Blues", as well as the title track, "Every Ought To Make A Change", "Drop Down Mama", "Clean Up At Home", and the frighteningly realistic "Floating Bridge".
Acoustic country blues doesn't get any better than this.
