Though he remains best known for his music for the Peanuts television shows, Vince Guaraldi was an adept pianist in Latin jazz grooves, a strength that comes to the fore in this 1965 quartet session with the brilliant Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete. Both are melodists, but they're a study in contrasts, Guaraldi keeping his solos simple with pointed rhythmic force, while Sete's lyricism consists in a complex weave of details with an understated beat. The pairing works well, with bassists Fred Marshall and Monty Budwig and percussionist Jerry Granelli keeping the Latin beats percolating, from bossa nova to cha-cha. Jazz versions of "A Taste of Honey" once proliferated, and Sete gives this one a forceful, bluesy inflection. --Adam Rains

5 out of 5 stars Another Guaraldi Classic.......2002-07-20

"From All Sides" is not generally regarded as one of Vince Guaraldi's better recordings. I must say that I don't know why. It actually swings harder than "Vince Guaraldi, Bola Sete & Friends," and is very much the musical equal of his more esteemed efforts like "Black Orpheus" and "A Boy Named Charlie Brown." Don't pass this one by.

5 out of 5 stars Vince Guaraldi's usual genius.......2002-01-19

From All Sides: Vince Guaraldi (greatest jazz pianist ever), and Bola Sete, brazilian jazz and samba guitartist: Even better than I was expecting. Vince and Bola manage to avoid the harmonic overload that normally occurs when guitarists and pianists get together, simply by staying out of each other's way. Vince makes this album with his (dare I say it) perfect piano playing, and his compositions and covers are always innovative and interesting, from covers of Beethoven, to "Manino Pequeno da Bateria", the little drummer boy, of "Charlie Brown's Christmas Special" fame. So yeah, it's just another Vince Guaraldi level latin jazz album, which happens to also have a great guitarist along with his usual terrific rythm section. This is an absolutely amazing album for any fan of Vince, as well as for the lover of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2001-12-11

This is a wonderful collaborative effort between two great artists. Here is where you get to hear the latin influence in Vince G's stuff. He makes it work, unlike other artists whose attempts aren't quite so successful in the latin beat. Bola Sete isn't a mere fixture, but instead is a vital element in this body of work.

5 out of 5 stars VINCE GUARALDI / BOLA SETE- "FROM ALL SIDES".......2000-05-22

This great album featuring Guaraldi and Sete, was until recently only issued in cassette format by Fantasy. I wrote to them around 1996 asking them to re-issue these great classic recording sessions by jazz piano virtuoso Guaraldi and by whom I have chosen to refer to as Brazil's samba and bossa-nova pioneer Bola Sete. From the afro-cuban music perspective I've also chosen to call Bola Sete, Brazil's "Nin~o Rivera". Fortunately Fantasy decided to re-issue this great classic in CD format and I'm happy to see that it is greatly enjoyed by fans everywhere. Bola Sete will no longer be "underappreciated", like some suggest he was, during his brilliant but virtually unknown international music career. Guaraldi and Bola Sete, a perfect combination which should have been recorded extensively.

5 out of 5 stars "From All Sides" is among the finest of Guaraldi's works........1998-11-14

Some time ago, I went on a spree of buying Vince Guaraldi CD's. It was not until recently, however, when I bought a portable compact disc player that I truly appreciated the depth and beauty of this album.

But this is NOT a Guaraldi album. The collaboration of a San Francisco Jazz pianist, and a Brazilian guitar virtuoso was unheard of at the time, but they managedto pull it off, and pull it off with amazing results. From the opening strains of the album, where Sete's guitar softly guides you to the genius of Guaraldi's piano styling, to the closing, with its forceful grace, "From All Sides," is an album that opens its listeners to some fantastic jazz.

Sete's contributions to the album, Little Fishes, and Mambeando, are, for me, reminiscent of Sergio Mendes, from the "Best of Brazil `65" album. On a side note, for those who are only familiar with Mendes since 1966, I urge you to seek out this album.

One of the biggest surprise on the album was the version of the Jobim-di Moraes classic, The Girl From Ipanema. I have several versions of this song, and the version on "From All Sides" is among the best.

"From All Sides" provides the listener with four Guaraldi tunes. Some of the albums livelier tunes are Guaraldi's Choro, Ginza Samba, and Ballad of Pancho Villa. The fourth Guaraldi song is Menino Pequino da Bateria, a refreshing arrangement of My Little Drum from the A Charlie Brown Christmas.

I heartily recommend that all fans of Jazz Trio, Samba, or Latin Guitar give this album a try. It would shock me if this CD was a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Stout Irish Music!.......2004-07-21

I was introduced to Amadan by accident when they happened to be playing at the bar I chose for my 21st birthday bash. I fell in love with the music instantly and, several months later, I managed to purchase this CD. It spent a solid month in my CD player and somehow manages to get wedged in it every so often these days.

Like Celtic music? Like punk? Like rock? Heck, you don't even have to like any of these genres to love Amadan. They're one of those rare bands where it doesn't matter what your taste is, you can't help loving them. This CD is an excellent blend of traditional and original (that manages to sound traditional, but punkified) music that will always put a smile on your face.

Buy this CD andraise a pint to this fabulous band and their first CD!

5 out of 5 stars their new album is even better.......2004-04-30

Their new album, Hell Bent 4 Victory, is even better and badder than this one. Their skill at playing and arranging has come a long way from SOL to HB4V. The same raw energy, andrelin, pub party wildness, only more focussed at a bit faster pace. For for working, working out, partying, marching to war, and sowing wild oats. I prefer these guys to Andrew W.K. by a long shot. The Pogues had a baby and it's called Amadan.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2004-03-23

The CD is excellent. Everyone I invite to listen to it falls in love with it. I have seen these guys live at Kells and they blow us away every time. If you like music, you must own this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Irish at its best.......2004-03-01

Amadan is an incredible blend of traditional irish music, with a more modern, punk sound. Their first albumn, Sons of Liberty, is fantastic from beginning to end, each song better than the next. It comes with my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars I've listened to this CD ~20 times in the last four days.......2004-01-24

This is how Irish rock/punk music was meant to be made. We just had to wait a while for it to come out. This is the best CD ever. It doesn't even matter what you listen to to enjoy it. I used to be a fluent rap fan until I heard this and now I'm a fluent Amadan fan. This band is seriously good enough to make it to the next Woodstock or something like that. I have burned copy but I like it so much that I'm gonna buy the album. I highly recommend recommending this to other people too. My brothers girlfriend knows one of the members and that's how I found out, so I'm telling you. Buy this. Now. Now. Are you clicking buy...? If yes then gooood, if no, then do it. Seriously. Insanely awsome stout Irish music!!

5 out of 5 stars "Sons of Liberty" gets a brother..........2004-09-25

Can you imagine my joy at finally managing to purchase this CD? Maybe.

This CD, like its younger brother, is one of the finest albums that you will ever purchase. A lot more original tunes in this one, but you could hardly tell the difference between traditional and original. That's the beauty of Amadan.

5 out of 5 stars All Fun.......2004-07-13

The younger brother to Sons of Liberty, Hell Bent 4 Victory is definitely the rebel in the family. With many original songs mixed in with more traditional tunes, HB4V is guaranteed to keep your feet tapping to the beat long after it's stopped playing. A little bit of Irish, a little bit of punk, and all fun.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-07-09

Excellent. A little faster and a little harder than Sons of Liberty, but still a welcome difference.
Keep them coming boys!

4 out of 5 stars More please!.......2005-01-06

This is the 2nd volume of Frank Hewitt discs from Smalls Records. Take a look at my review of the first (_We Loved You_) for some of the background & a thumbnail of Hewitt's piano playing. In brief: Hewitt was a highly original bebop pianist who was something of an underground legend in New York but never got the chance to release a record during his lifetime. (The only exception was his very brief appearance on _Live at Smalls_, an Impulse compilation which more or less sidelined him.) Since his death Luke Kaven of Smalls Records has been busy trying to secure him posthumous fame by finally releasing the few sessions that Hewitt recorded in his lifetime.

_Not Afraid to Live_ is Hewitt's last session, though he still sounds just fine on it despite the short time remaining to him. The bassist is his usual bassist Ari Roland, while the drummer is the great Louis Hayes, who had not worked with him before. The session is a considerable contrast to _We Loved You_: the repertoire has more of a boppish slant--"Manteca" & "Night in Tunisia" turn up in the setlist--& the tempos are mostly up, sometimes _very_ up. The session has its rough edges: Hayes seems intrigued but not quite on Hewitt's wavelength, & it's pretty obvious that Hewitt simply launched into the tunes without much advance discussion or arrangement. So, for instance, on "Just One of Those Things", he starts with a slow, rhapsodic unaccompanied opening, then shifts into a ferociously fast gear for the head--but Hayes doesn't follow suit, coming in on brushes at a more moderate tempo, so there's a little negotiation before the players lock in & just blow (it's actually a terrific performance despite the rough spot). On "What's New" Hayes seems bemused that Roland insists on playing in two the whole time, & at several points tries to nudge things into doubletime or a brisker walk, but no-one takes him up on it. These are all things that could have been cleared up by an extra take or two but I assume this isn't what happened in the studio.

So it takes a couple listens to get past the occasionally glitchy surface of the music. If you do that, though, you'll find this just as fascinating a window on Hewitt's music as the first CD. The prize plums here are a tremendous "I'll Remember April" (quite fast--nothing like the version on the first CD), "Just One of Those Things", & an especially fierce "Manteca". Hewitt's playing is almost alarmingly double-or-nothing--even on a fast tune he favours doubletime runs--& it's about as far away from the smooth virtuosity of much mainstream jazz piano as you can get..... but despite the fratured surface he's always on top of things--walk-in-the-park relaxed & in the pocket. It's a very personal wrong-right style of playing: even the familiar themes of the bebop tunes get reworked with pointed off-notes & strange harmonies.

I'd still suggest that listeners unacquainted with Hewitt go to _We Loved You_ first: it's a little ballad-heavy, but the band is completely sympatico with him there. But if you like that one, then needless to say you'll want more. I gather there's still more Hewitt in the can, including a live gig--I hope it's not long before these see the light of day.
