Though he remains best known for his music for the Peanuts television shows, Vince Guaraldi was an adept pianist in Latin jazz grooves, a strength that comes to the fore in this 1965 quartet session with the brilliant Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete. Both are melodists, but they're a study in contrasts, Guaraldi keeping his solos simple with pointed rhythmic force, while Sete's lyricism consists in a complex weave of details with an understated beat. The pairing works well, with bassists Fred Marshall and Monty Budwig and percussionist Jerry Granelli keeping the Latin beats percolating, from bossa nova to cha-cha. Jazz versions of "A Taste of Honey" once proliferated, and Sete gives this one a forceful, bluesy inflection. --Adam Rains

"From All Sides" is among the finest of Guaraldi's works........1998-11-14
But this is NOT a Guaraldi album. The collaboration of a San Francisco Jazz pianist, and a Brazilian guitar virtuoso was unheard of at the time, but they managedto pull it off, and pull it off with amazing results. From the opening strains of the album, where Sete's guitar softly guides you to the genius of Guaraldi's piano styling, to the closing, with its forceful grace, "From All Sides," is an album that opens its listeners to some fantastic jazz.
Sete's contributions to the album, Little Fishes, and Mambeando, are, for me, reminiscent of Sergio Mendes, from the "Best of Brazil `65" album. On a side note, for those who are only familiar with Mendes since 1966, I urge you to seek out this album.
One of the biggest surprise on the album was the version of the Jobim-di Moraes classic, The Girl From Ipanema. I have several versions of this song, and the version on "From All Sides" is among the best.
"From All Sides" provides the listener with four Guaraldi tunes. Some of the albums livelier tunes are Guaraldi's Choro, Ginza Samba, and Ballad of Pancho Villa. The fourth Guaraldi song is Menino Pequino da Bateria, a refreshing arrangement of My Little Drum from the A Charlie Brown Christmas.
I heartily recommend that all fans of Jazz Trio, Samba, or Latin Guitar give this album a try. It would shock me if this CD was a disappointment.

Stout Irish Music!.......2004-07-21
Like Celtic music? Like punk? Like rock? Heck, you don't even have to like any of these genres to love Amadan. They're one of those rare bands where it doesn't matter what your taste is, you can't help loving them. This CD is an excellent blend of traditional and original (that manages to sound traditional, but punkified) music that will always put a smile on your face.
Buy this CD andraise a pint to this fabulous band and their first CD!

This CD, like its younger brother, is one of the finest albums that you will ever purchase. A lot more original tunes in this one, but you could hardly tell the difference between traditional and original. That's the beauty of Amadan.

More please!.......2005-01-06
_Not Afraid to Live_ is Hewitt's last session, though he still sounds just fine on it despite the short time remaining to him. The bassist is his usual bassist Ari Roland, while the drummer is the great Louis Hayes, who had not worked with him before. The session is a considerable contrast to _We Loved You_: the repertoire has more of a boppish slant--"Manteca" & "Night in Tunisia" turn up in the setlist--& the tempos are mostly up, sometimes _very_ up. The session has its rough edges: Hayes seems intrigued but not quite on Hewitt's wavelength, & it's pretty obvious that Hewitt simply launched into the tunes without much advance discussion or arrangement. So, for instance, on "Just One of Those Things", he starts with a slow, rhapsodic unaccompanied opening, then shifts into a ferociously fast gear for the head--but Hayes doesn't follow suit, coming in on brushes at a more moderate tempo, so there's a little negotiation before the players lock in & just blow (it's actually a terrific performance despite the rough spot). On "What's New" Hayes seems bemused that Roland insists on playing in two the whole time, & at several points tries to nudge things into doubletime or a brisker walk, but no-one takes him up on it. These are all things that could have been cleared up by an extra take or two but I assume this isn't what happened in the studio.
So it takes a couple listens to get past the occasionally glitchy surface of the music. If you do that, though, you'll find this just as fascinating a window on Hewitt's music as the first CD. The prize plums here are a tremendous "I'll Remember April" (quite fast--nothing like the version on the first CD), "Just One of Those Things", & an especially fierce "Manteca". Hewitt's playing is almost alarmingly double-or-nothing--even on a fast tune he favours doubletime runs--& it's about as far away from the smooth virtuosity of much mainstream jazz piano as you can get..... but despite the fratured surface he's always on top of things--walk-in-the-park relaxed & in the pocket. It's a very personal wrong-right style of playing: even the familiar themes of the bebop tunes get reworked with pointed off-notes & strange harmonies.
I'd still suggest that listeners unacquainted with Hewitt go to _We Loved You_ first: it's a little ballad-heavy, but the band is completely sympatico with him there. But if you like that one, then needless to say you'll want more. I gather there's still more Hewitt in the can, including a live gig--I hope it's not long before these see the light of day.
