Cornbread

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This session is best known for introducing Lee Morgan's beautiful ballad "Ceora," but actually all five selections (which include Morgan's "Cornbread," "Our Man Higgins," "Most Like Lee," and the standard "Ill Wind") are quite memorable. The trumpeter/leader performs with a perfectly complementary group of open-minded and talented hard bop stylists (altoist Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley on tenor, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Larry Ridley, and drummer Billy Higgins) and creates a Blue Note classic that is highly recommended.

Players Include
Lee Morgan - Trumpet
Herbie Hancock - Piano
Billy Higgins - Drums
Hank Mobley - Sax (Tenor)
Larry Ridley - Bass
Jackie McLean - Sax (Alto)

5 out of 5 stars A quintessential hard bop trumpeter.......2007-04-20

Blue Note recorded a number of hard bop musicians in the 50's and 60's, such as Art Blakey and Horace Silver. Many of these recordings introduce young trumpeters, including Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. In fact, Morgan had been a side man of Blakey's before moving to be a leader on his own.

This is one of Morgan's better efforts. There are several things noteworthy about this album.
1- Morgan is outstanding. His tone is clear and strong. While he doesn't play "pretty" like Art Farmer, he is capable of lyric playing. He has been influenced by Clifford Brown, although his tone isn't quite as warm as Brownie's.
2- This group played great together. The always welcome warm-toned tenor of Hank Mobley is a plus, and Herbie Hancock hadn't yet gotten commercial and he also excels.
3- Morgan is a surprisingly adept composer. Everything on the album is an original except "Ill Wind", and two of Morgan's tunes, the title track and "Ceora" are gems. "Cornbread" is a down-home funky blues, and "Ceora" is a bossa-flavored ballad. Both are excellent.
4- The improvisations are outstanding, but even among such stellar colleagues, Morgan stands out.

In short, Morgan was one of the bright young stars of the trumpet in the 50's and 60's. This is a terrific example just how good he was.

5 out of 5 stars cup mute .......2007-01-09

i think the cup mute on ill wind is my favorite track of someone playing with a cup mute. mutes are cool but sometimes they arent you know what i mean

5 out of 5 stars Tasty, nourishing, and home-made.......2006-11-22

I can't think of another jazz standard from the so-called "hard bop" movement, with the possible exception of Horace Silver's "Strollin'," that's as infectious and plain "re-playable" as Lee Morgan's "Ceora." And yet it's a bit too adventurous and irregular to be a good candidate for a lyric. As natural and inviting as the tune's melody and changes are, it has the quality of a superior improvised solo rather than a labored "composition" or pop tune. Besides the strength of Morgan's solo, the track features some of Herbie Hancock's most sensitive and exquisite playing on record in my experience. But the best is yet to come: Hank Mobley's solo on the tune eclipses the others--a model of restraint, structural wholeness, and unfolding beauty from the first to last note. Yet it's so understated that the thought of comparing it to Morgan's or Hancock's solos is unlikely to come to mind. The great tenor saxophonist simply finds himself in a context and position to contribute his unique melodic gift to the success of the enterprise of which he's an integral part.

None of the other tracks are up to "Ceora," but with musicians like these playing together without "Sidewinder"/"Rumproller" formulaic restraints, there's no way to go wrong with a session like this.

5 out of 5 stars Great Lee Morgan.......2006-10-23

Lee Morgan has recorded a number of excellent albums in his career, but this has to rank as one of his very best. Everything works perfectly, from tune selection to solo intensity. Jackie McLean and Hank Mobley join Lee on the front line, and play lyrically and, in McLean's case, with fire as well. The best track is CEORA, one of Lee's most impressive compositions, a beautiful bossa - the theme is gorgeous and the solos light and dreamy. CORNBREAD is a bluesy, church-inspired tune, with a Horace Silver feel to it. Herbie Hancock is magnificent on piano throughout the proceedings; his playing is captivating and delightful, especially on OUR MAN HIGGINS, which also features nice drum work by Billy Higgins. ILL WIND, the only standard on the CD, has a blues flavor and a very nice muted solo by Lee. This is a great album - a classic Blue Note release. Definitely worth grabbing.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Bop at its Finest.......2006-05-05

I assume that if you are looking at this review you are not the casual jazz fan. I simply dont understand why Lee Morgan isnt better known. While its true that he isnt an innovator in the style of Miles Davis or Dizzy, he flat out can play. I would describe this album as quintessential hard bop. Although Morgan's album (and song for that matter)"Sidewinder" is better known, I think this album from start to finish is more appealing and accomplished. It truly is a great jam session. The title song "Cornbread", like "Sidewinder" (his signature song, from his best known album) begs repeated listening. If you are going to own a Lee Morgan album, this would be my first choice.

Album Description

Corn Bread: An All-American traditional staple of rural cuisine with widely varying ingredients depending on the region of the country but universally enjoyable, especially as part of a meal prepared for old and/or new friends. "The words 'traditional' or 'folk' may connote something precious or sacred, something not to be tampered with, but I don't look at it that way and I don't treat these songs like museum objects. I borrowed lyrics from one for the other, and changed melodies to suit my mood, and put some drums and electric guitars with them... The great purveyors of folk music always put their own stamp on things. Like good home-cooked food, it's gonna come out a little different each time you make it. No sense in worrying too much over it. It's like your cornbread batter--don't stir it up too much, just put it together and let it cook." --Tim O'Brien

Musicians include: Chris Thile, Kenny Vaughan, Dennis Crouch, Edgar Meyer, Dirk Powell, Casey Driessen, Stuart Duncan, Dan Tyminski, Jerry Douglas, Mollie O'Brien, Darrell Scott, and Del McCoury.

Not impressed. Purchased due to Jerry Douglass appearance. Wouldn't even know he was on it. Bought with Fiddler's Green. Now that is a nice product, very nice. Jerry is on it as well, w/Stuart Duncan.

5 out of 5 stars Is there any limit?.......2006-02-17

I have been a huge fan of Tim for at least a decade. Each release of his is so wonderful, that I keep wondering how a current one can be as good or better. Somehow he manages to exceed expectations with each one. Cornbread nation falls perfectly into this pattern. It may be his best yet--excellent song selection, evocative and exciting presentation, and seamless collaborations with guest artists who are the cream of the current folk/bluegrass/americana crop. Esp. his amazing sibling Mollie, with the voice of gold. I see little point in describing the individual tracks--just sample them and you will see.

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed it!.......2006-01-17

Never heard of Tim O'Brien until I sampled "Fiddler's Green" album in stores but bought both and do not regret it. Cornbread Nation is humorous, soulful with catchy rhythms and vocals. It's a mix of original and old tyme songs. Tim O'Brien is my new fave.

4 out of 5 stars A new sense of contemporary spirit and perceptiveness to older music.......2005-10-25

Playing Time - 49:14 -- Tim O'Brien is not afraid to arrange an old traditional number like "Hold On" with electric guitar (Kenny Vaughan) and conga and shaker (Kenny Malone). He recognizes that traditional music is timeless, but he also welcomes the opportunity to incorporate modern sounds right alongside the old. While a bit lengthy, take the 6-minute rendition of "Moses," for example. Kenny Malone's drum kit imparts a solid rhythmic foundation as banjo, fiddle, guitar and four vocalists get spiritual. Tim shows a very adventurous side with the title cut that could have the same significant impact on this century's music as "Hot Corn, Cold Corn" did when Flatt & Scruggs first presented that in the last one. For folks who want to discover how to embody saxophone into traditional music, then they need look no further than Sam Levine's playing on songs like "Cornbread Nation" and "The Foggy, Foggy Dew."

That gives a clue as to why I appreciate O'Brien's releases. Besides his own zestful singing and picking, he also hears accordion, drums, percussion, electric guitar, steel guitar and other instruments right alongside the traditional string sounds of banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and bouzouki. He also branches into various genres such as Cajun with "Let's Go Huntin'," that the supporting musicians also clearly enjoyed too. The blues are best captured on this album when Tim O'Brien and Dan Tyminiski sing "House of the Risin' Sun." Well, Jimmie Rodgers' "California Blues" is full of old-time country moxie and yodeling but also some slightly distorted electric guitar with reverb and driving snare drum. On "Boat Up the River," I would've preferred hearing some banjo and less electric guitar. Bluegrassers will perk up at the original "Runnin' Out of Memory" (with Del McCoury's tenor). A slower country twang permeates the cover of Harlan Howard's "Busted." A number of the songs are only sung solo, and I heard a few opportunities where Tim could've built a few more vocal harmonies into the mixes. However, those looking for vocal harmonies will certainly enjoy the album closer, "When this World omes to an End," with electric guitar, drums, bass, and mandolin accompanying the vocals of Tim O'Brien, Odessa Settles, Todd Suttles, and Darrell Scott.

Tim O'Brien has built a reputation for being able to bring a new sense of contemporary spirit and perceptiveness to older music. With spring coming, "Cornbread Nation" is like a new bloom in the garden. Crossing into a multitude of genres (gospel, old-time, blues, bluegrass, classic country, Cajun) is part of his approach. Creative arrangements are another element. Finally, Tim also likes to hear traditional instruments alongside drums, percussion, electric guitar, saxophone and other non-traditional ones. As long as you like this type of transmutation, you'll find this CD to be very fulfilling and stimulating. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

This mouth-watering recipe may be the tastiest to come out of Perry's Black Ark kitchen-studio. Is the aging Upsetter truly mad these days, or just playing it his way? All one can say for sure is that he's working it and definitely getting paid. Most fans, though, prefer classic treats like this reissued early set, with the pre-hip hop music giant in relatively sound mind, freestyling his unique brand of uninhibited mind-science and down home rules for clean living over tracks of his own creation. Lee Perry is the original B-boy, one of the first to mic-toast over a dub track at a sound system dance. After he decided to come indoors and put it all down on wax, he was the first to scratch a record and press the sounds of daily life--ringing bells, barking dogs--into service of his muse. --Elena Oumano

    Album Description

Arguably his finest album, originally released in the late '70s. The full title is 'Roat Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread'. 10 tracks.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars I hope you overstand.......2005-06-28

Shot through with genius and dementia, the murky sound quality only adds to the hallucinogenic, dream-like quality of this classic from Perry's Black Ark era. Features the mooing cow, crying baby and ascending jet sounds as musical elements (as opposed to sound effects). Complaints about the sound quality miss the point. From what I've read about Mr. Perry in his Black Ark period, the murkiness may have been intentional.

5 out of 5 stars Someone PLEASE find the master tapes..........2004-10-19

I'm giving this release of ROAST FISH, COLLIE WEED, AND CORN BREAD five stars because it's Lee Perry's tour-de-force...but the sound quality is just plain lousy. The tracks you hear on the CD come directly from an old vinyl copy of the album which was obviously in less than mint condition. Is this the best we can do for a genius like Scratch? ROAST FISH deserves a lavish re-release like the Congos' first album. Where are the master tapes?!
"Roast Fish and Corn Bread" is a great track, but it's the one that everybody and his brother talks about(tantamount to having a discussion about the Rolling Stones and saying, "'(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' is awesome!"). The real standouts here are the playful "Favourite Dish"(in which Perry repeats the crying-baby effect he first used in the awe-inspiring "People Funny Boy"), the saxaphone-driven "Big Neck Police"(with gorgeous backing vocals by the Full Experience), and--best of all--the paranoid, menacing "Evil Tongues". You can hear the anguish in Perry's gravelly voice as he sings the chorus, and a single withering note from Earl "Chinna" Smith's guitar drones on and on and on. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars PERRY AT HIS TRIPPED-OUT BEST.......2004-06-23

I love the stuff that came out of Black Ark studios in the 70's. "Scratch" made a lot of wonderful madness during that period. This album is one of those wonderfully mad recordings. It's very spacey and out there while still being heavy reggae. From the jazzy sax on 'soul fire' to the otherworldly title song, it's enjoyable. So grab a blunt and pop it in!

3 out of 5 stars Great music, horrible mastering.......2003-01-28

The domestically available vinyl and CD versions of this would-be-great album are marred by uneven pitch, possibly the result of a problem w/the mastering of the original tapes. The songs are great but difficult to listen to if you're sensitive to these things...the pitch wanders up and down in a maddening cycle, not flat, now sharp, occasionally true. This is a shame as the songs are AWESOME, great productions compromised somewhere down the production line on their way to your home stereo...

    5 out of 5 stars Soul Fire.......2002-09-15

I recently found a mix of this tune on a "Reggae Greats" compilation casette in the bargain bin at a chain record store. The version on the tape has been mixed differently than any other version I've been able to find. The speaking in the intro has been mixed much farther up front. The first time I heard it I practically drove off the road. The version from this album just doesn't sound as good, and this new mix really brings out the greatness of the song. This tune is truly a serious piece of work, and has more integrity in all of its lo-fi glory than almost anything else I've heard on the radio over the last ten years. When he sings: "we aint go no water". You can really feel that fire....Lee Perry is a genius.

5 out of 5 stars There is no better band than Cornbread.......2003-11-09

WOW - what a CD and band! They have a style completely all their own, while still deeply rooted in cross over pop country. The only thing wrong with the CD, is that it is so hard to find and I would love more tracks. But then again, the best things in life are worth waiting for. It seems that the mighty and powerful Los Angeles music folks just don't know how to promote the band because they are not in a nice neat little package and have they do not draw inside the lines. Cornbread is the band in movie Sweet Home Alabama, and so many people loved their three songs in the movie, including the carnival street scene at night where they perform Sweet Home Alabama, but when you buy the Soundtrack, they left Cornbread out in the cold. Well, I am a loyal fan, and I know what I like when I hear it, and I know Cornbread is not a typical band or typical sound, but simply the best. My only regret, is that they they have been unsuccessful at getting the 3 songs from Sweet Home Alabama on a CD, and that their CD's are too short, because when you start listening, you crave for more, but the CD ends. Also, becaue the label does not promote this band, so few have a clue about the band. It was the same for John Mayer and outher artists. The lable promotes once you demand their CD's. I believe in this band, and I believe you will feel the same way.

I'm glad I found this band. I like the "No Place Like Home" CD more each time I listen to it. This is a definite buy..... Enjoy them!!

From the opening keyboards of "Mona Lisa's Smile" to the closing riffs of "Alabama Home," the No Place Like Home EP is a mini-masterpiece of local music. Already a huge hit in their hometown and surrounding area, Cornbread is surely set for the big time as soon as that elusive record deal pulls through. Standout tracks are "Mona Lisa's Smile," one of two songs produced by Shawn Mullins which is already a huge hit on Columbus radio station WCGQ, and "No Place Like Home," a tune/tale about making it in the music world.

This posthumous release from one of Cajun music's most popular acts is a delight, an excellent reminder of why Beau Jocque was so popular. Dissatisfied with traditional zydeco, he created a kind of fusion, incorporating various other styles from straight-ahead blues to rock & roll. Give Him Cornbread (also the title of one of Jocque's greatest hits) provides a fairly comprehensive sample of this, and it's a rollicking good time, to boot. Jocque was very good at what he did, and on this recording, the band is tight and enthusiastic. Recorded on zydeco's home ground of southern Louisiana and eastern Texas, this performance has the fiery energy so essential to good zydeco, plus several highly inventive moments; among them, a fascinating cover version of John Lee Hooker's classic "Boogie Chillen," not to mention Big Joe Williams's "Baby, Please Don't Go." There's plenty of traditional music as well, though, with lots of original songs (personal favorite: the slow, sultry, bluesy "Brownskin Woman"), plus material from Jocque's most direct influence, Boozoo Chavis. With Jocque's death, zydeco lost one of its greatest innovators; Give Him Cornbread does nothing to belie that notion. --Genevieve Williams

        4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2001-06-21

i was lucky enough to see beau twice before he died. the first time was at the fabulous rock and bowl in new orleans, where he was staging yet another battle with boozoo chavis. imho, virtually all music (zydeco, blues, classical...) is best experienced live. beau was a big man with a big sound and a big voice. this cd comes as close as possible to capturing the intensity of his performances.

        GIT IT, BEAU!!!

5 out of 5 stars YOU KNOW CALI!.......2000-08-25

I'd just like to say that the album is cool. It features original and traditional tracks which I think younger musicians should focus on. It keeps the Creole French in the music which is also a good feature on the album. I definitely have to give Beau Jocque his props. He was one of the greatest accordianists that ever lived. He name will definitely go down in History

        5 out of 5 stars Beau Joque.......2000-08-12

"Give Him Cornbread: Live" is a collection of some of the most fiery and exciting live performances by one of Zydeco's most fiery and exciting performers. The last recording of the late Beau Joques captures all of the energy and power of the passionate artist, seizing the listener with a series of fast and furious performances which cpature the spirit and power of Zydeco music.
