New Orleans native Kermit Ruffins was aptly born on the birthday of one of that city's most deservedly heralded masters of music, Professor Longhair. The 40-year-old trumpet player came blasting out of high school with the Rebirth Brass Band. These guys have always been favourites of mine. I've seen them in concert and I've got all their cds and I still listen to them all.
Sure; this is different for them. But give it a go. Their vocals are just as good as ever and they've done some great work with some classic hits. Human Nature, Let's Stay Together, Sara Smile and Time Will Reveal are the best four on here, but overall, the whole cd is tight and they've done an excellent job in giving these older songs a great new feel. If we aren't going to get much new music from them in the near future, then I'll take this any day. I'm as impressed with their work on this as I am with all their other cds. It's excellent and should be a must with all of their fans.

I've read the reviews and STRONGLY dissagree with the majority that don't rate this album 4 or above!!! I'm 23 (only just) and I bought this album two years ago.Since buying it I have played it alot! The funny thing is that every time I play it and people are over they go crazy about it and then go buy it for themselves. The M.J remake of "HUMAN NATURE" is off the hook and every other effort on the album is fantastic. The cover of the album has a basketball T with "1" on it, I really hope that means that there are more to come.Yes they have lost a member due to ill health bot they still have IT!!! And the reason the last few albums passed by with little to no air play is due to the record company's lack of promotion-HENCE they have changed label's so we have yet to hear the last of these fellas. LONG LIVE THE KINGS OF SOUL, HATERS...PS OFF cos y'll really don't know what your talkin bout. Get the album or you are REALLY missing out on some great stuff!!! NUFF SAID

Great for Older Listeners.......2006-03-20

This is a throwback. I'm much older and I love most of the songs in this collection by the original artists. My favorite song was "You Make Me Feel Brand New" by the Stylistics. The cover was almost as good as the original. The cover of "Let It Whip" by the Dazz Band was great. My guess is teenagers would find this collection too slow and boring but us oldies but goodies would like it a lot.

Give It Some Time.......2005-08-09

When you first pop this album into your CD player and press the play button, you will ask yourself, "What kind of crap is this?" Throwback is obviously different from all of Boyz II Men's other CDs. A lot of people at first will not like this CD at all. However, given some time, this CD will grow on you. You will enjoy this CD much more everytime you listen to it. The younger generations have no experience with old school music and of course will find the songs in Throwback very odd. They will end up giving it very low ratings because of something they are not use to without giving it the chance it deserves. Many are saying Throwback is crap and not a Boyz II Men type of CD, but what is wrong with change? Change is always good is it not? Give Throwback a chance and you will surely enjoy it.

Let the good times roll with Kermit.......2005-07-22

If you want to get a taste of street band, foot tapping, jigging music, Throwback is for you. Kermit teams up with the ever so awesome Rebirth Brass Brand to produce a sound that is reminicent of good times in the Big Easy.

"It's Later Than You Think", Ray Charles' "I Got A Woman", and "What is New Orleans" are my personal favorites. The CD is just host to great musicians who show their enthusiasm and chops through the CD. Recording this thing must have been one big party. The ONLY weird spot? The last song, "Up In Tha Hood"--clearly a lot of fun for the band, but a little scary for the rest of us who are used to straight up brass band and not Kermit as Master P...otherwise, an exceptional CD from, by the way, a great example of a local record label--Basin Street puts out some great local artists. Check out their other artists-- Los Hombres Calientes w/ Bill Summers and Irvin Mayfield, Theresa Anderson, and Dr. Michael White, to name a few.

Ruffins Goes Full Circle.......2005-07-16

I guess Rebirth is the perfect name for his Brass Band after all. After a long and successful stint with his Barbecue Swingers, Kermit Ruffins has rejoined the Rebirth Brass Band for this delightful funky blue CD. If there was ever such a thing as fraternity rock, New Orleans Style, this would be it. It is obvious that these pieces have all been well polished in regular club dates. From the Happy Weekday Blues to his cover on I Got a Woman, it is clear that his years as a working live performer have given him the confidence to make a studio take sound as easy as a march down Bourbon Street. I will always admire his work with the Barbecue Swingers and how Louis and Muggsy would have loved to have heard him. Even though he shifted music gears, Ruffins didn't disappoint the trad fans with his funeral pacing on the dixieland classic Just a Closer Walk With Thee. This is a delightful party CD. The highlight of the entire project may well be his lively second line strutter, It's Later Than You Think. It is almost impossible not to dance to it. For pure fun, this CD is higly recommended.

The album also features two remakes of previous XYZ hits "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me Loving You."

Drawing from the past and present, Terry Ilous and original guitarist Mark Diglio co-write several of the songs. The inspiration of this album is partly attributed to singer Terry Ilous' son. The song "Letter to God" was the last one they wrote for the CD, after the tragedy of Terry's son dying late last year.

GREAT COMEBACK WITH A MATURE SOUND..........2004-10-26

Whoever that Bruce Forrest guy is who reviewed this needs to open his ears - he obviously is clueless about music (he must work for Rolling Stone or Allmusic). Since i did a few gigs as keyboardist for XYZ i was excited to be a part of this very mature album from my buddy Terry and friends. I really didn't know what to expect when i first got the cd , but i have to admit i was pleasantly surprised. Great hooks , top-notch musicianship and just a nice evolving mature sound. No grunge crap (butt-rock) or alternative elements here , but not full-on 80s glory either. It's a bit more Zeppelin-esque i'd say. Terry sounds great as always and the band is just smokin. A fine addition to your Melodic Hard Rock collection.

GIVE XYZ A CHANCE!.......2003-07-11

This is the third release of XYZ. A very underrated band on the now defunct Enigma label, now featuring veteran JK Northrup (Paul Shortino, King Kobra, Cage) on guitars.

If you were into this guys before, do not expect the same sounds! These guys really play their hearts out in this one, giving the songs a melodic 80's sound but at the same time a modern dark feeling to the songs. Think Dokken's (underrated) Dysfunctional, but with gutsier vocals and harder drumming. They even include great new versions of the singles of their self titled debut: "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me loving You".

If you are willing to give a couple of spins to the cd before critizicing, then give it a try. I did and I do not repent! If you expect to digest it immediately or if you are expecting a copy of the albums on Enigma, then forget it!!!

XYZ-"Letter to God" Review.......2003-07-08

XYZ/ "Letter to God" XYZ was one of a multitude of 80's bands that were basically handed a recording contract, in a mad signing frenzy by record execs attempting to find "The Next Big Thing." Some of these bands survived for a reasonable duration, while others, such as XYZ, fizzled faster than a firework dud. Fast forward to 2003. Now two of the former members, obviously tired of working fast food joints, decide to regroup, as if anyone even cares, and release, "Letter to God." With easily, one of the most irritating voices in rock, "singer" Terry Ilhous whails off some of the worst written lyrics, this side of Mr. Rogers. Warning: The cliches don't stop here. Backed by former Quiet Riot-bassist Sean McNabb's mundane bass lines, new guitarist JK Northrup demonstrates a barely-passable display of "Guitar Playing For Dummies," with riffs that were already played to death 20 years ago. Drummer Paul Monroe does little to appease the pain, whatsoever. There's not a single song on here I could recommend, without repeating myself: this collection of unlistenable songs would not have worked in the 80's, never mind today. Nice try guys, but there's a car awaiting you in the drive-thru.

I just bought this cd and what a big disapointment. Save your money & buy the first & second cd they put out. They are GREAT.This one does'nt sound nothing like the first two

Brought Back to Breaking.......2004-07-19

This is the ideal cd for those who enjoy old school underground rap. Right from the intro Dj Cer makes you feel as if you were in a different place and time. The following are my favorite tracks: 9,11,14,and 30. These songs bring me back to the days of breakdancing on top of graffiti covered cardboard with my childhood friends. This cd hosts a time when rap was creating classic cuisine now all you get is fast-food.
