Stanley Clarke

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
No one ever accused Return to Forever of playing too few notes, and bass wonder Stanley Clarke commits a few similar sins of excess on his first solo album (see "Life Suite, Parts 1-4"). But, hey, this was 1975, and there's no denying Clarke's genius for sublime grooves and fancy fretwork. As funky as Larry Graham and more fun than Jaco Pastorius, he moves agilely between the convoluted pleasures of "Lopsy Lu" and the more highbrow charms of "Spanish Phases for String and Bass." The album is one of the best showcases for Clarke's mastery of both double bass and electric. --Billy Grenier

3 out of 5 stars Middle of the road wedding music.......2007-01-20

I bought this cd because I had everything in my wedding planned to the last tiny detail except the ceremony music. All the songs on the cd are nice traditional wedding songs. I did not use any of the music from the cd, but I am glad I bought it because it helped me realize that traditional wedding music was not what I wanted. All and all a nice classical music cd but not for brides who really want a personal ceremony. BTW I went with Enya and Lorena McKennitt.

5 out of 5 stars just what I was looking for.......2007-01-10

We wanted traditional wedding music and found it in this CD. I'm no music expert, but the arrangements and performances seemed fine. I would definitely recommend this CD for any bride looking for a concise collection of traditional wedding pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Most Chosen Selections.......2006-03-13

As a wedding officiant, my wife and I are often asked to assist the couple with other services for their ceremony, such as music. For this, we have a very large selection in our music library to choose from. We have put together a catalog of cd's that we loan out to the couple for their review, and most often, their selections come from BRIDE'S GUIDE TO WEDDING MUSIC.

If you're planning a traditional or formal wedding on a budget, this cd has it all. There are even two selections of Wagner's "Wedding March" to choose from. Only two of the selections have vocals, the rest are all extraordinary instrumental selections.

Often, even around the house or in my car, I find myself listening to this cd. The music is soothing, refreshing, uplifting and most enjoyable. I recommend this cd over all other wedding music cd's.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Reference CD.......2006-01-09

This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume 2, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs; just about everything on here is standard fare for weddings. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over potential music selections with an organist, a string quartet, etc. Like my review for Volume 2, I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner. BTW: beware of reviewers who don't use their names, especially "A music fan." This is most likely the producer of the "Wedding Traditions" CD and he slanders other CDs so his will look better. You'd think that in the wedding music business people would have better ethics, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. The best advice I can give, as a classical musician myself, if to take time to listen to the sound clips, and if possible, try to find them on iTunes where they might sound higher quality. This is the only real way of knowing whether the CD is right for you.

3 out of 5 stars a classic, but not everyone's cup o tea.......2007-05-16

slightly improved song writing compared to his self titled album, but still not on par with the jazz fusion writing of his contemporaries (Zawinul, Shorter, Corea, Hancock, or even Pastorius at the time and since then Marcus Miller, etc). some great bass playing, a fun, funky spirit, but on the whole, sorta dull album if you prefer jazzier sounding fusion. maybe it's apples and oranges but i endlessly prefer the stuff Shorter and Zawinul were doing at that time. still an important bass record though.

5 out of 5 stars One of the defining albums of jazz electric bass........2007-05-02

Widely considered one of the two essential jazz bass guitar records (the other being Jaco Pastorious' eponymous debut record, also released in 1976), "School Days" finds virtuoso Stanley Clarke providing a good indication of what he's made of. Supported by a fine ensemble (usually Raymond Gomez on guitar, David Sancious on keys and either Gerry Brown or Steve Gadd on drums), Clarke creates a record that is very much a funk bass call to arms. And certainly as a bassist, I find myself, even years after I've first heard this one, picking my jaw up off the ground (listening to the first 30 seconds of closer "Life is Just a Game" will do that to you).

One thing immediately noticable about the record is that it's startling diverse, sliding easily from loping funk ("School Days") to slithering synths ("Quiet Afternoon"), old school horn-driven funk jazz ("Life is Just a Game") and even a slice of acoustic calm in the midst of the storm ("Desert Song", featuring Clarke on an upright and guitarist John McLaughlin on acoustic guitar). Throughout, the playing is top notch and it maintains itself as engaging.

One point I'd like to make-- this album is screaming for remastering. The 1990 CD transfer just doesn't cut it. But this aside, "School Days" is a classic, a great slice of funk-driven fusion jazz, and for anyone wanting to see blazing chops on a bass guitar, this is where to look.

5 out of 5 stars Freaked Out.............2005-12-06

Let me clear the line-up first:

Personnel includes: Stanley Clarke (vocals, piano, acoustic, electric & piccolo basses, handbells, gong, chimes); Jack Nimitz, Buddy Childers, Lew McCreary, George Bohanon, William Peterson, Stuart Blumberg, Albert Aarons (brass); David Sancious (organ, keyboards, Mini-Moog synthesizer, guitar); George Duke (keyboards); Billy Cobham (Moog synthesizer, drums); Icarus Johnson (acoustic & electric guitars); John McLaughlin (acoustic guitar); Raymond Gomez (guitar) Gerry Brown (drums, handbells); Steve Gadd (drums); Milt Holland (congas, triangle, percussion).

All the geniuses are together to show the best of their funk jazz effort. Stanley Clarke was always the best in bass rhythm no matter he is solo or with jean luc ponty. He can mix with any situation and creates something anew. This is one of the funkiest jazz I have it with me.

Grab it.....

5 out of 5 stars FUNK YEAH.......2005-09-10

Im only a 15 white kid but I think I know good music when I hear it, Stanley Clarkes school days is my all time favorite jazz album, The bass playing blew me through puberty and the other musicians were all jazz legends. This is truly an amazing album.

5 out of 5 stars Schoolin'.......2005-08-23

I keep telling friends that of all the jazz funk albums released back in the 1970's, "School Days" was probably the best of them all. It is probably because Stanley Clarke, the master bassist, didn't resist the time he was living and playing in; he embraced it. He put the funk right in the middle of this album, recruited a brilliant group of musicians who all played with energy and passion, and just let it all come together like any jazz album, be it fusion, traditional, bebop, New Orleans style, free jazz or whatever. This isn't simply funk and jazz riffs being fused; these are well crafted and composed compositions full of emotion, power, and tradition. "School Days," the title track, gets the album started by announcing to the world and any doubters, that funk is here to stay and jazz and funk can easily co-exist. Clarke provides the statement with the legendary funk opening, and the album is off and running. There are no wasted moments either. "Quiet Afternoon" is brilliant. "Hot Fun" is a jazz jam. "Life is Just a Game" is bold and majestic. Each song is a unique piece of creativity that adds to Clarke's statement. Perhaps, he is giving the world a lesson here or maybe he is just remembering when he was in school; regardless, "School Days" was a funk era masterpiece of electric jazz. None of Miles' electric stuff was ever this good, but then again, as I wrote at the beginning, this is the best jazz funk album ever recorded.

Album Description

With the release of The Bass-Ic Collection, composer, arranger, producer, and master bassist Stanley Clarke can look back with pride on a career of nearly 30 years' duration. This 14-track anthology samples nearly every phase of Clarke's artistic evolution?straight-ahead jazz and electric fusion, white-hot rock and stone-cold funk?through the course of such classic albums as Journey To Love, School Days, I Wanna Play For You, and The Clarke/Duke Project. Among Stanley's supporting cast are such superlative musicians as Jeff Beck (guitar), Tony Williams (drums), Jon Faddis (trumpet), Dee Dee Bridgewater (vocals), Kirk Whalum (saxophone), and Jan Hammer (keyboards). The Bass-Ic Collection also includes two brand-new recordings, both produced by Stanley Clarke. "Lost In A Thought" features George Duke on piano, Ray Gomez on guitar, and the mighty Dennis Chambers on drums. "Between Love and Magic" features star saxophonist Gerald Albright, with Stanley playing all other instruments.

4 out of 5 stars basically just wicked..........2007-04-17

I'm a great fan of Stanley Clarke and enjoyed this compilation very much. Many of his biggest hits are on this CD, which makes it a good place to start if you're new to Clarke (or great bass music) or just a nice addition to your collection if you're an old fan of his.

I do wish they would've made it a double album though. It's fairly one sided in it's selections and sadly too limited. Yes, there are many classics on there, but then again, Stanley Clarke have made very many classics, hasen't he? None the less, it's still a good album filled with wicked bass playing and great tunes.

4 out of 5 stars From the Man who Put the Name "Alembic" on the Map.......2007-04-02

Some "Best Of" collections feature a degree of direct involvement by the artist (personal reflections on a career's worth of great music-making; hand-picked selections; perhaps a rarity or two as a reward for the legions of loyal fans who probably own most of the music already in less re-mastered form). This is not one of those. This release appears to have been put together by Epic in order to recognize just two of Stanley Clarke's many fan bases: the jazz-rock fusion camp, and the full-formula funk camp. Disclosure - I'm from the former. So about half of these songs have been putting a smile on my face and sometimes making me shake my head in happy disbelief for more than 30 years. The sound is *much improved* over the original cd issues, leading one to hope optimistically that the Bernie Grundman treatment for *all* of Stanley's mid-70's albums will be forthcoming. Wouldn't that be nice?

Probably not many but the jazzers out there will remember that Stanley was (and still is) an excellent acoustic bassist, with unforgettable arco technique. That's not represented here unfortunately. No straight-ahead or chamber jazz entries. And no movie score selections either. I agree with all of the reviewers here that as a sampler this collection leaves much to be desired, so it's nice that there are a couple of "new-at-the-time" tracks, circa 1995. They're not great, but they're OK. In particular, there's some very nice Randy Brecker-ish trumpet on "Lost In A Thought" that goes uncredited (anyone know?). It could be George Duke trying to fool us on his Synclavier(tm), but it sounds much too real to be sampled.

Some discographical notes: My disc, like everyone else's, shows track #14 to be 1974's "Life Suite, Parts I-IV", which would be great. But instead what's actually there is a nice re-mastered version of "Life Is Just A Game" from Stanley's all-time masterpiece album "School Days" (1976). I'm OK with that - just wondering if that's the way it is on anybody else's copy? Finally, I simply cannot allow people to think that the drummer on "Hello Jeff" is some guy named Kenny, when in fact it is none other than the great LENNY White. There. OK, I'm done. Oh, by the way, buy multiple copies of this title at the cheap prices shown and give them to your friends. Thanks. And good luck to the lady below from Australia who wants to have Stanley's babies!

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2006-12-18

There are more than enough excellent tracks on this disc to make it a good buy. There are many songs left off, though, that are much more enjoyable and impressive than half the songs included here. Danger Street, the best rock song he's ever done, is missing. Vulcan Princess and Lopsy Lu, the two best songs on his self-titled album, are also missing. Worse yet, however, is the omission of nearly all of his most stunning bass jams. It would be nice to have a compilation that really shows off the full limits of Stanley Clarke's incredible talent.

How about a second disc? Suggestions:
Life Is Just a Game and Desert Song from School Days;
Lords of the Low Frequencies, Illegal, and Funk Is Its Own Reward from East River Drive;
Play the Bass and Time Exposure from Time Exposure;
Basketball from Hideaway;
Bassically Taps from If This Bass Could Only Talk.

Until you've heard those songs, you really haven't heard Stanley Clarke.

4 out of 5 stars All hail the Lord of the Strings!.......2006-11-05

How do you review the work of a Master? All I can say is that I consider Stanley Clarke to be the greatest bass player I have ever heard, and this cd is a great compilation of many of his most enjoyable songs. "School Days" will always stand out as my favorite S.C. selection. I also especially enjoy "Hello Jeff," Hot Fun," and "Rock n Roll Jelly." As you can tell, I lean more towards the "rock" side of Stanley's music and if I had any complaint about this cd is that there were not enough selections that were jazz-rock in nature as opposed to the mellower straight jazz sounds. But hey, he's the Master no matter what he plays!

5 out of 5 stars Best of All............2005-09-26

I possess 4 albums of Stanley Clarke and a big admirer right from the time when I heard Stanley with Return to Forever. This album is a collection of Stanley's best numbers. The choice of songs is really cool. Anybody new to Stanley and would like to explore funk groove with unimaginable bass playing..Buy it...You wont regret.

5 out of 5 stars Stanley's best work in the '80s.......2005-06-12

I luv this record to death. 'Cuz it's sure is my all-time favorite and mostly an introuduction to Stanley Clarke. I been listening to it since day 1 (1994 or 1995) and it's still sound more mature than it has been on his previous records. It does features an all-star cast: the late George Howard (RIP), the late Gregory Hines (whom he features on two tracks above, RIP), his long-time mentor and partner George Duke, my label-mate Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, just to name a few.

There's not enuff I can't say 'bout it but 2 say all the songs incl. the remake of Janet Jackson "Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)" is outstanding. It does features a solo from Freddie which u consider playing real smoothly like Miles or Chuck Mangione or whatever maybe even Rick Braun or Chris Botti.

Also on "Workin' Man" (such a sweet song) is mostly like a rock or jazz shuffle that take u 'cross where u at. Then on "Tradition" (one of my all-time favorites from the album) is mostly a good breakout reminds me of Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE which I listen too alot. Among other tracks like "Come Take My Hand", the title track, "Bassically Taps" (big groove and nice work from my man and fav. actor Gregory Hines), "I Want to Play for Ya", Charles Mingus' work "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" (once remaked by Clarke himself and others like Spyro Gyra whom among my favorite jazz group of all-time, etc.), etc. are real smooth and very touchy.

This is a great album to keep just b/c it's a must for all jazz fans and all musicians who played in the jazz band and marching band whom I played backed in high school. I sure this wouldn't disappoint you @ all. Stanley Clarke is truly my main artist to date. I luv him 2 death.

4 out of 5 stars The REAL Stanley Came Back To Visit!.......2004-11-10

When I first heard this disc it was a breath of fresh air for me and a relief at the same time. I thought, "At last, Stanley's doing GOOD albums again!"

Given the schlocky albums he put out from 1979 and throughout the 80's, I was VERY skeptical at first. But my doubts that Stanley still had it were pretty much erased upon first listen. Here, Stanley has shown how diverse a musical pallette he has:

The two cuts with tap dancer Gregory Hines are nothing short of FUN and BRILLIANT simultaneously, as Stanley pulls off some stunning chord melody bass to Hine's mercilessly complex tap rhythms! "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" the old Charles Mingus chestnut gets a very high-tech 1980's treatment here, featuring Wayne Shorter on soprano sax. Other tracks like "Workin' Man" and "Stories To Tell" just get flat out fierce like the Stanley of old, no fuzak here.

The only thing that I din't much care for was the album's now rather dated 1980's production (heavy reverb, tons of synths etc), hence the 4 stars as opposed to five. Sucha shame he didn't do more albums like this after for it sure was good to hear the REAL Stanley Clarke a-slappin' again!

5 out of 5 stars A Period Of Transition.......2003-09-24

Basically a jazzier retooling of Clarke's "Hideaway"-era
sound highlited by Gregory Hines tap dancing "percussion" on the
tital track opener and the closing "Basically Taps".Stanley's
cover of Mingus's "Goodbye,Pork Pie Hat" embellishes the original
melody so much that it's very hard to tell what it is-the production more like Ben Sidran of the same vintage then anything. Then again that sound permeates most of this album as well notably on the funkiest track "I Wanna Play For Ya'" and
the Police-like "Stories To Tell".The very jazzy "Tradition"
shows Clarke in a rare post-bop setting and overall this is about the closest Stanley Clarke ever came to a fairly straight-ahead jazz album, even if it's still very soulful and electric.
A notable point of reference.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Electric Bass Playing.......2002-02-13

The first and last tracks on this album are worth the price of admission. Wicked funky bass playing. These two tracks really show off the strengths of the electric bass.

If you are an electric bass player, this album will keep you busy for a while, listening to Mr. Clarke's excellent work. His range of tone qualities and techniques are amply exhibited here. This is a showcase for Stanley Clarke's virtuosity, and really an encyclopedia of the state of electric bass technique at the end of the 20th century.

That being said, many of Clarke's tunes lie flat. They lack direction and fail to hold the listener's interest(at least this listener's interest). Charles Mingus he is not. Stanley Clarke's genius is in the expressiveness and technique of his playing.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Stanley's Later Years.......2001-09-08

This is still one of my favorite Stanley albums. The first and last tracks are duets with Gregory Hines tap dancing. A first I'm sure, but I can take it or leave it. To me, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" is really the highlight of this record and probably my favorite version of that tune. It reminds me of Stanley jamming with Weather Report - both at their peak. "I Want to Play for Ya" is a little bit of that old school funky talking bass thang. It worked well on some of his older solo albums like Journey to Love and School Days and it really works here. What we get on this record is a mature artist at the peak of his songwriting skills. Stanley is STANLEY. He does not have to play at 200 mph every minute. What he does is craft some great songs, beautiful melodies, great sounds, and smoking solos. This is the type of CD that if it falls into your CD changer has a way of staying there for a while.

5 out of 5 stars Listen with Earphones and Be Astounded.......2007-03-12

As I've said in other reviews of music, I don't know the technicalities, but I know what I like. Wynton Marsalis has never failed to delight and, truth be told, I use "In Gabriel's Garden" as background music in the office and to fall asleep to. As smooth or smoother than any trumpet player I've ever heard, and his "Moto Perpetuo" is simply unbelievable.

He rounds out my four favorite classical musicians: Itzhak Perlman, Earl Wild, David Russell, and Wynton Marsalis. How would you like to see all four on stage? A pipe dream: I can't even get tickets to any one of them unless I know four years in advance that they're going to be in town.

Btw, "Classical Wynton" is my all-time favorite Marsalis album.

I have one wish, and can't forgive PBS for not doing this: Wynton had a program for kids about jazz, and after "its run," they never brought it back. I think it should be required in all schools.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet baroque trumpet music!.......2005-10-01

It was the first disc that acquaints me with this trumpeter 2 years ago and i was suprised by that the disc brought me more than i ever dared expect from it, probably the artist is not active enough like a professional classical specialist to establish an impression to me as a classical artist from which I would like to expect more and more but this one is stunningly wonderful classical cd,although its sound quality is not preferable to me:the orchestre sounds too timid, afterall the trumpeter Mr Marsalis does not fail in retain my interest in the disc.well I cannot say more for trumpet is a complete musically stranger to me.if there are more classical trumpet music discs coming up.I would look forward to this name.

5 out of 5 stars Praising The Most High Through The Clarion Voice.......2003-07-18

...a lowly servant heralding the return of The King...

...perhaps at the fringe society-wise, but nevertheless a clarion voice in praise of The Most High...

...stunning and spiritually invigorating...

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wynton.......2001-12-15

Wynton Marsalis is a superb musician. His style is bright, pure and exuberant, but he has a tendency to go a little overboard sometimes. In this CD that tendency is particularly evident in his rendition of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto. However, his playing is terribly moving and charismatic and he brings a vitality to these pieces that is seldom present in other performers' interpretations. The repertoire is very varied and the English Chamber Orchestra provide wonderful accompaniment. These versions may be a little flamboyant sometimes, but they are great nonetheless, and Wynton's masterful playing is always worth listening. Very few people can express the sheer joy of making music as intensely as Mr. Marsalis; his renditions of Jeremiah Clarke's works are absolutely marvellous.

4 out of 5 stars Darn Good Trumpet Playing.......2001-11-11

Okay, I'll admit Mr. Marsalis may have taken some liberties with the music and made it a little more "flashy," shall we say. However, this IS Wynton Marsalis, and as long he continues to play impeccably on all his albums (this one being no exception), he can do whatever he darn well pleases as far as I'm concerned.

On this recording, Wynton Marsalis produces music from an instrument from which it is difficult for most other trumpet players to get any kind of respectable sound. His mastery of the piccolo trumpet is nothing short of remarkable, to say the least. If you've ever tried to play one, after hearing this you will gain a much deeper appreciation for the man's seemingly limitless talent and potential with both piccolo and regular trumpets.

Yes, piccolo trumpet means some high notes, so if high notes bother you, maybe you should shy away from this one and pick out another one of Mr. Marsalis' spectacular albums.

Conclusion: Why four stars instead of five? Mostly because of the liberties taken with the music. Still unbelievable trumpet playing - worth the price just for that.

4 out of 5 stars Brandon's Review.......2004-02-09

I am a trumpet player who has studied under the tutalage of Bernie Nero principle trumpet of the Austin Symphony and am also a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, therefore I feel that I am in a unique position to coment on the quality of this recording. Although the music assembled for the recording is an excellent combination of contrasting styles, the musical prhasing is not played charicteristically correct for that time period of music, and stylistically lacks cohesivness. None the less it is still a very good recording, that is why I give it a four rating.

5 out of 5 stars Consistent excellence.......2002-05-20

The Canadian Brass never disappoints. There are some great arrangements of Baroque classics on this album. It may be hard to imagine an organ piece like Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor played by a brass quartet, but it actually works. Overall, this album is consistent in delivering great music.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with the Canadian Brass.......1999-12-06

You really can't go wrong with any CD by the Canadian Brass; they're such an outstanding group. Because of this, it can oftentimes be difficult to choose which of their CDs to purchase. However, if you are looking for a Canadian Brass CD focused around the more classical aspect of music, "Go For Boroque!" is an excellent choice. Compared to the other CB baroque CD, I feel this one is the better. It has a lot more tracks, and the songs, in my opinion, are better. It has everything from my personal favorite, "We Hasten with Eager Footsteps," to "Trumpet Voluntary," to "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," which is more closely associated with "Phantom of the Opera." I highly recommend this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Gem.......2005-12-03

A MARVELOUS collection is "Stanley Clarke at the Movies"!! One would not have to be familiar with any of the film titles on this compilation in order to hear and feel the emotion in every last musical arrangement!

The orchestral piece I most enjoy from "Stanley Clarke at the Movies" is "Lucky Again," from one of my top favorite films, POETIC JUSTICE. "Lucky Again" has a relaxing melody with a FANTASTIC finish!

5 out of 5 stars Just one song..........2003-02-03

Stanley Clarke is very much unheralded; just the track "Lisa" (Passenger 57) is worth double the album price. Magnificent!

5 out of 5 stars Have you ever..........2000-10-19

...closed your eyes and imagined you were floating on a cloud? If not, purchase this CD, put it in your stereo and get ready for a ride to heaven. Stanley is so awesome! This CD demonstrates that Stanley is deliberate, concise and very thorough in his expression of music as it relates to films. The fullness of each composition fills your heart, mind and soul and leaves you hopeful that some day, someone will understand you and communicate your thoughts in some type of creative way. What a wonderful piece!

Having listened to stanley for 28 years now, I never fail to get goose bumps down my neck, especially when hearing a new release for the first time. this album is no exception. I want to have this man's babies. He is the inspiration for my own bass playing career. Stanley, a genius amongst genius's.

5 out of 5 stars Clark/Duke Project I.......2005-08-03

Although it took longer than expected to arrive, the CD sounds as good as the album I used to have.

5 out of 5 stars Two Heavyweights At Their Best!.......2003-07-15

Stanley Clarke and George Duke, two musical titans who'd
worked together for years finaly get around to doing a duo album,
namely one that emphasises the funk that both artist's regular
releases tended to skim over and considering funk is both artists
best asset, that's a wonderful thing.the big pop hit "Sweet Baby"
is a decent FM ballad but is not representative of this album
as a whole.The slick,uptempo R&B of "I Just Want To Love You",
the quirky cover of Richard Berry's infamous "Louie,Louie" and
Dukes "Finding My Way",a catchy pop-rock number are obvious
highlites-the latter being among Duke's Top 5 all-time best
compositions. But it's in the slamming funk splatters of the
rousing instrumental opener "Wild Dogs" and the vocal numbers
"Winners" and "Let's Get Started" where this collection finds it's full flower."Touch And Go" is a slightly more R&B-sy ballad
then "Sweet Baby" while the brief intro "Never Judge A Cover By
It's Book" (clever tital,George!) deserves to have been drawn out
a bit longer.A veritable collosus!

3 out of 5 stars One star for each great song.......2003-06-10

"Sweet Baby", "I Just Want to Love You", "Touch and Go"- these were some of my favorite songs during the summer of '81. I didn't really purchase the album(or rather cassette) until the summer of '85. The three killer songs mentioned above were a staple of the Black AM radio station in my hometown. Before recording "Vol. 1", George Duke and Stanley Clarke were Jazz and Pop superstars in their own solo careers. This first pairing had strong songwriting and vocals. Amazingly, both Mr Clarke and Mr. Duke have very similar vocal timbres and styling. Musically, the album is very staightforward and simple. Since the duo wrote their own material and play most of the instruments, they no doubt knew exactly how each song should sound. The rest of the album has some okay material (althought some of it is truely embrassing), but the three pop singles mentioned above carry the set as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars The Clarke/Duke Project review.......2000-06-11

If you want to hear some great bass lines, I strongly suggest this great cd because it is perfect for you. Stanley clarke is truly a great bass player and he sure comes out in this cd. It's no wonder why Clarke has inspiered so many great bass players. One of whom is Les Claypool from Primus. With Clarke and Duke together they make a great combo. This is a great cd and I hope you enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great minds.......2000-03-22

these are two of the Greatest Musicians ever on the first of 3 projects.this is the best of them.the great slow jam Sweet Baby still is tight.hearing Duke on Boards&Clarke on Bass is a treat to the ears.a must have.

5 out of 5 stars All Good.......2004-12-09

Not one bad cut. The great thing about this album is you can take each of the musicians singly and explore what they are doing. Listen to Jeff Beck...not on "Hello Jeff" (actually DO listen to that too!) but on "Journey to Love". His haunting solo fits perfectly with the mood of the song...and gives it the Beck Edge. George Duke glides throughout. David Sanctious (sp?) is a monster...not just on keyboard but guitar as well. From Stanley's original "Stanley Clarke" through this album and then to "School Days" this three album era was Stanley stepping out and rippin it up.

5 out of 5 stars Stanley's In Top Form Here, Even With The Cheese.......2004-11-11

JTL is Stanley's 3rd solo effort and shows much growth and ambition, not to mention diversity.

"Silly Putty" - Stanley and George Duke kick out the funk with TONS of melody and good vibes. Great horn charts that would do Tower of Power proud, plus, I used to LOVE playing this tune on bass myself to warm up with. Great fun.

"Journey to Love" - The one real weak track that could've been a gem if the dippy L Ron Hubbard lyrics and vocals were eliminated altogether, would've beena cool instrumental though not groundbreaking by any means

"Hello Jeff" - Stanley rocks out w/ Jeff Beck and the creative sparks fly! A fun fiercely rocking piece, great to play when driving especially! Beck just tears it up with his searing bluesy melodicism!

"Song to John Pts I & II" - Stanley, John McLaughlin and Chick Corea create a beautiful tapestry of heartfelt music that honors Coltrane and yet doesn't clone or copy him. Indescribably expressive and beautiful!

"Concerto for Jazz-Rock Orchestra" - The album's piece de resistance'. The ethereal intro was a bit over-long but once past that, when Stanley comes in with that piccolo bass, you're off on a wild ride like no other! Complex rhtyhms fly from drummer Steve Gadd, there's death-defying brass passages (I LOVE the brass arrangements on here!), Stanley underpinning the whole thing and David Sancious, who normally plays keyboards lays into some ferocious, smoking post-Hendrix guitar. Great stuff that builds to an apocalyptic end!

Despite the gaffe with the title cut, this is GREAT STUFF from a magical time when fusion was genuinely creative.

Alright, so the title track and Concerto for Rock/Jazz Orchestra can get a little cheesy. So what? Give the man a little credit for being ambitious. This album ranges from funk to rock to jazz to soul to orchestral jazz. The youthful energy and spirit throughout just makes you want to smile. Besides, the opening track is hilarious and funky at the same time. Song for John is by turns contemplative and spellbinding. Hello Jeff is a great vehicle for Jeff Beck. Oh, and by the way, Stanley's playing is fantastic on the whole album. It would be churlish to complain about a lack of maturity here and there. I think the guy was maybe twenty when he made this album.

3 out of 5 stars Not Clarke's best, IMHO.......2007-05-30

Bought it on vinyl, and I still have the cassette tape I made from it then. Not bad, but I like "School Days" much more.

3 out of 5 stars mixed feelings.......2007-05-16

amazing player, but the songs on this album are so lame, i can't sit thru the thing. the writing just isn't on par with the great jazz fusion that was being made at the time, or since. an album every bassist is supposed to own, but there are plenty better ways to dig Stanley, on his own and certainly as a side man playing better material.

5 out of 5 stars Find "Fusion" in the dictionary, you'll see this album.......2007-05-06

Once upon a time, jazz-rock fusion was an exciting musical adventure. Listening to this album for over 30 years now, brings it all back to me. There were plenty of great albums and musicians and many milestones and groundbreakers, including both Chick Corea/Return to Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra's first 2 albums, Herbie's Headhunters, and Weather Report. Each one had its tremendous strengths and new statements to make, sometimes in compositional terms (Chick especially), and other times with great soloing or ensemble playing. They demonstrated that it WAS indeed possible to make creative, jazz-influenced music with a rock or funk electronic format. But no other album brought it together as convincingly as Stanley Clarke's first fusion album. Simply put, "Stanley Clarke" was a brilliantly successful meeting of art and energy.

How did he make it happen? First of all, he had tremendous talent on hand. Drummer Tony Williams was one of the geniuses of the jazz world at the time, and though he only had one foot in the fusion door, it was his best foot here. He has two solos, both of which ignite the songs containing them, rather than standing separate or distracting as drum solos so often do. Pianist and keyboarder Jan Hammer was at a creative peak when he played here, coming from four years with Mahavishnu and other projects, and honing a synthesizer sound that married rock and classical elements. My personal favorite, guitarist Bill Connors simply blows the set away in several places. His sound was more polished than in his first album with RTF - clearly Stanley wanted to record with him again. His 6-minute solo in the final section of Life Suite is a sheer masterpiece of tone and dynamic construction. (Check out Bill's latest album, "Return", it is *****.) Finally, Stanley's own bass was - and still is - among the best.

Then, there is Stanley's writing. This would not have worked if all these guys just jammed together. I think Stanley himself was at his peak with this album. The first song, Vulcan Princess, comes in with a strong groove, somehow both rock and funky at the same time. It's followed by a short but slightly sappy ode to Yesterday Princess, the only song with words. But then come two power-house monsters: Lopsy-lu, where the musicians trade off each other on a funky, walking pace that builds to near hysteria, then Power, an intense exercise with a jagged theme that serves to build tension in the solos, especially Bill's where he and Tony go double-time at the end. The second half of the album includes Stanley's meditative bass-and strings virtuoso-piece, Spanish Phases. This is followed by the GREATEST SUITE IN FUSION HISTORY, the 4-part Life Suite. Strings and horns help to punctuate a composition that flows with the love, worries, and excitement of life itself.

There is such versatility and range of emotion here, but the key word was Adventure. These guys somehow knew they were into something special. Go buy this album, and tell all your friends about it.

4 out of 5 stars Stan's the Man.......2006-10-13

Truly a remarkable album!Stan the Man covers the Bass both electric and acoustic, well there is no word to desribe it.Backed by Tony Williams (Tony Williams Lifetime),Jan Hammer (Mahavishnu Orchestra),and Bill Conners (Return to Forever before Al Di Meola),you will be playing air bass before track three is over just like all my friends have the first time I played it for them.I rate at 4 1/2 stars as I quit giving 5 star reviews, but it's really close!Jan Hammer's signiture keyboards is all over this one as is Tony's pounding drums. Bill Conner's guitar playing gives it a little more edge to the sound. The second half features the use of the acoustic bass haves a little more classical feel at times, interesting to say the least.I prefer this over "School Days", but both are good (actually I listen to them back to back.)

5 out of 5 stars MR Tony Williams.......2006-03-02

This was one of the best jams of it's time.If you ever heard Tony in the mid to late 60ies with miles you know how fast his foot work was. He takes it to a new high on this whole jam sesson. And you know how Stanley got down. anyone who cant understant this fusion all time great. Dont know Jazz. I am very very happy to have this calabaration of Rock&Jazz to my long list of unforgetable moments in Jazz history.
