5 out of 5 stars Just a great album.......2005-10-24

New Vintage is one that will drive one to play over and over. The arrangements , music and talent that are on this album is just amazing! If one likes jazz, this one's for you.

3 out of 5 stars Boring, But Still MF.......2005-08-31

This CD was one of the series of 70's releases from Maynard Ferguson that was loaded with great solos by the Boss and little else.

I recall thinking at the time how much the material on New Vintage sounded like the Conquistador release.

Maria is interesting and MF does a superb job with it but it ends up going nowhere.

Airegin is a great Mike Abene tune played very well.

Scheherazade with disco beats? Please! Despite the upper register playing from MF, this tune does nothing for the overall presentation.

If you're looking for a good MF CD to add to your collection, keep shopping.

But if you buy it, you WILL enjoy MF's playing (and hopefully you will enjoy some 70's style arrangements, too).

5 out of 5 stars WoW.......2005-04-22

Well, well well, I have got to declare that this album contains all that whitehot Ferguson firepower that us devotees have come to expect, and more!!! Maynard really unleashes the full hi-chops artillery. Some fans might be offended by the blatant porny sounding arrangements, however, for my pure MF listening pleasure, Scherezade is top shelf (listen out for Maynard's backing babes and the 'stylish' MF violin cadenza at the start), Oasis is smooth ecstasy, and as for the second half of Maria, BAM! As for Star Wars, I think George Lucas should really consider making Maynard an honourary Jedi and use him on the upcoming film, Episode III. Finally, the CD cover art is the epitome of MF in his full glory. CHECK IT OUT!

4 out of 5 stars Of all the MF recordings, this is one of them..........2005-04-01

Many of us who play trumpet learned by playing along with MF and Mangione records in the seventies. There is some overly commercial stuff here, but Airegin is worth the price of the CD. It is an old Slide Hampton chart, and Peter Erskine's drumming here rivals Buddy Rich even on a good day. Mike Migliore and Biff Hannon solo as if they'd been stuck playing disco for the whole rest of the session (I wonder why). It is also nice to hear MF come in on lead trumpet during the "shout chorus" before the A section at the end. And Erskine's last last seven notes are incredibly hip.

4 out of 5 stars New Vintage - Maynard Ferguson.......2004-08-28

Maynard Ferguson's "New Vintage" dates from 1977, around the middle of his contract with Columbia Records. His Columbia recordings were very pop oriented and extremely successful commercially, though when heard today are clearly a product of their time. Ferguson released one album per year and then toured the world, often performing in high school auditoriums and encouraging jazz education with an extremely exciting 12-piece band.

Ferguson's Columbia recordings fall into three vague periods. The first set, from "Alive and Well in London" (1969) to "Chameleon" (1974), featured a vicious band performing both straight-ahead and jazz-rock fusion charts recorded in real-time. His middle period, from "Primal Scream" (1975) to "New Vintage" (1977) incorporated studio musicians and guest soloists and
used extensive studio technique and signal processing. "Conquistidor" (1976) even yielded a top-40 hit, the theme from "Rocky." The recordings from the final period, from "Carnival" (1978) to "Hollywood" (1981), are a mixed bag, often betraying the strain for commercial acceptability, including more obligatory movie/TV themes (Rocky II, Battlestar Galactica), rigid pop covers (Baker Street, Star, 9-to-5), strange hybrid charts featuring background vocals (How Ya Doin' Baby, Toma Topa Woman), some excellent originals (Carnival, Spirit of St. Fredrick, Dayride) and a few straight-ahead standard gems (Aregin, Stella by Starlight, Naima).

"New Vintage" hails from the middle period and has a more cohesive band sound than the studio constructions of "Conquistidor" or "Primal Scream." All but one of the six charts were arranged by Jay Chattaway, who began his career writing for the U.S. Navy and followed his 70's band arranging work with a very successful film/TV scoring career, including hours of music for all the reincarnations of the Star Trek TV series. His moderately funky and accessible arrangements and compositions define the sound of "Primal Scream," "Conquistidor," and "New Vintage."

"New Vintage" follows the formula of "Conquistidor" almost track for track. "Star Wars" has pop hit written all over it, although it did not achieve the chart status of "Rocky." "Oasis" is the smooth brother of "Mister Mellow." A funky "Maria" equals "Star Trek" all the way to the freakish triple-high C nestled in the fade-out of the song. "El Vuelo" is an ersatz Spanish composition
similar to "Conquistidor." "Scheherazade" is a pop-funk classical adaptation in the mold of "Pagliacci" (from "Primal Scream"). "Aregin" is the odd-man out, a frantic traditional bop arrangement by Mike Abene that sounds especially clean with the album's dry production style and make you long for Ferguson's halcyon days with Stan Kenton's band in the early 50's.

While Ferguson's playing lacks the superhuman clarity of his work in the early 50's (he was 48 years old at the time of the recording), in some ways his lyrical tendencies mesh better with the soft-funk of "New Vintage" than the traditional jazz he pursued immediately before and after his Columbia days. The soloists are excellent, including a young Peter Erskine, saxophonist Mark Colby, flautist Bobby Militello and saxophonist Mike Migliore. Most of the sidemen were Ferguson's live band and given the passion and virtuosity they displayed in concert, it is a shame that their talent is often masked by the production technique and intentionally lukewarm scoring.

For those of us band geeks that came of age during this period, those high notes conjure happy memories of band trips and jazz festivals. While Ferguson's best Columbia recordings are, arguably, the early 70's MF-Horn series, none of those recordings are yet available on CD. The three mid-70's recordings have their own charm for those willing to take the time trip, and "New Vintage" may be the best of the bunch.

Album Description

Declan McManus Pumps It Up. Joe Bussard. "He's an eccentric record collector who's preserved all sorts of magical corners of music - although he says things like, 'There are no good jazz records made after 1927.'" Elvis Costello - Esquire UK October 2005

"This is the music of poor whites and blacks: wild-ass jazz and string-band hillbilly, surreal yodels and king snake moans, lightning-bolt blues and whorehouse romps and orgasmic gospel. It's all anti-pop, anti-sentimental: the raw sounds of the city gutter and the roadside ditch." Desperate Man Blues by Eddie Dean - Da Capo Best Music Writing 2000

"Joe has spent more than 50 years pursuing his purpose with a single-mindedness bordering on mania. And his purpose is no less than collecting and preserving the vast wealth of American vernacular music that was recorded on fragile shellac discs during the early decades of this century." A Visit and Interview with Record Collector Joseph E. Bussard, Jr by Marshall Wyatt - Old-Time Herald Spring 1999 - oldhatrecords.com/BussardInt.html

Sell your shoes cause your goin to heaven after you play this one! You can finally say you've heard it all. Top drawer assemblage of roots, blues, and just plain fun. Uncle Joe say it ain't so... give us another, PLEASE!

4 out of 5 stars terrific collection of early songs.......2007-02-13

If you're interested in the history of US music, as I am, you'll find this a fine addition. Cleaned up as well as can be expected but still some hum & hiss...but not enough to be distracting.

5 out of 5 stars another great release from OLD HAT........2006-12-26

everything i've ever bought on the old hat label has been fantastic, and this is no exception. a must have disc for fans of old time music. and if you have no old time music discs, this would be as good a place as any to start with. great sound and a variety of musical styles make this disc a complete winner.

5 out of 5 stars Will Interest Lovers of Roots Music.......2006-07-15

A generous 24-track helping of some of record collector extraordinare Joe Bussard's favorites. The examples included run the gamut of early 20th centruy roots music ranging from Hillybilly music to Blues, Jazz, Jug Bands and beyond.

Sound quality is top notch -- these guys really know how to do 78-RPM transfers. Also Joe's records seem to be in excellent condition to begin with so not a lot of noise reduction is required. This is one of the very finest sounding discs of 78-RPM transfers that I have heard.

Packaging is also lavish with a 70 page booklet that contains annotations for each of the 24 tracks, and lots of interesting photos of vintage record labels and packaging, as well as several essays and stories about Joe's record collecting career. There's much of interest here for those who love Roots music.

4 out of 5 stars A total package .......2006-02-04

I had not heard of Joe Bussard before this collection though I consider myself an avid music enthusiast and budding collector. After having heard this disc (and having read the extensive liner notes) I'm more than a little green with envy over Bussard's collection.

This disc collects some of Joe's personal favourites with names more familiar (Big Bill Broonzy, Gene Autry, Uncle Dave Macon) and some that will prove obscure to all but the most investigative record collectors (A.A. Gray and Seven-Foot Dilly, Fields Ward and the Grayson County Railsplitters, The Stripling Brothers). It's also cross-genre so if you only like country, or only blues, or only gospel, this will not be the collection for you.

Besides the songs themselves, which would be enough to make this a good buy, the packaging tells you a lot about WHO Bussard is (been collecting records since 12, once ran a pirate radio station), WHY he collects ("You ever smell the sleeves? They got that real funny wood smell to 'em.") along with some great stories about the "finds" he's made over the years. He's enough of a character that I'd love to watch the documentary about him. You also get brief bios for each of the performers included (a paragraph or two) as a nice bonus.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Twin fiddle workout "The Lost Child" has served as the radio theme for Bussard for years and I can see why. It's a keeper that alternates smooth fiddling with some nice staccato that implies the child might be "skipping" at play. Jazz-blues "The (New) Call of the Freaks" has an insistent chorus ("Stick out your cans/Here come the garbageman...") while Blind Gary (AKA Rev. Gary Davis) does a great gospel blues sermonette in "You Got to Go Down" ("You got to learn how to treat everybody/cuz you got to go down...ashes to ashes and dust to dust"). Charley Jordan's risque blues "Keep it Clean" is a standout as well. Autry's "Atlanta Bound" is far from the cheerful image of the man who sang "Rudolph": he's promising to kill the "rounder" who's dallying with his wife.

LOWS:
The only tune here I found unlistenable is the gratingly off-key family gospel tune "Give the World a Smile" by the Corley Family. Despite the nice sentimental lyric, I just couldn't stomach the singers themselves.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you have an interest in early music that's not restrictive to a single style, this is a very nice collection with some gems that would otherwise be lost.

        5 out of 5 stars stunning.......2007-07-18

This is a delightful record. The selections were chosen with care. It was Peter Grant's voice and his deliverance that made me fall off my chair. He has a beautiful voice and express the diction with clarity. Pity though because he is British and not from North America. Cast aside clones like Michael Buble, Steve Tyrell, Rod Stewart( Ugh!!!!) and their like fodder. This is the real thing if you like good music.

Will someone from the US listen to him and give him the exposure that he deserves? Music listeners from all over the world are starving for good music. This CD together with Smokey Robinson's last recording stand tall above the rest of the muzak.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing young artist.......2006-11-28

With a voice that is as smooth as velvet, this talented young man compares quite favorably with Sinatra or Tony Bennett in their primes. This debut album is stunning in its quality and maturity, and beautifully showcases Mr. Grant's talents. He powerfully evokes a range of emotions and moods, while reinterpreting a number of well known standards in ways that make them all his own. This album is a refreshing change from the mass-produced popular music that dominates the radio here in the States, and with luck Mr. Grant will find a US audience.

5 out of 5 stars Watch His Star Rise.......2006-09-30

Peter Grant may be only 18, but his talent extends far beyond his tender years, and is a force to be reckoned with.

My CD collection ranges from Michael Buble to Jamie Cullum to Peter Cincotti, and I'm familiar with many of the original versions of the songs covered on New Vintage. In spite of this, I was completely blown away by what I heard, and haven't taken the album out of my player since purchasing it a week ago.

Every track, in my opinion, is a gem. From epic ballads like Walk Away and Joanna to big band numbers like Best Is Yet To Come and I Saw Her Standing There, and sizzlers like Spooky and Girl From Ipanema -- there's something for everyone, delivered with vocal perfection.

But lest you think Peter lacks versatility, rest assured that he is fully capable of swinging effortlessly from belting high notes to growling in the lower registers. He delivers angst and passion when required, adds a touch of cheekiness at appropriate moments, and is absolutely brilliant with the big band ( pacing well with the orchestra yet holding back just a little with relaxed confidence ).

His voice is just wonderful, with a lush tenor vibrato that never falters even when under extreme stress. The maturity of his tone is remarkable considering his age. I can only imagine how spectacular he'll sound once he hits his 20s.

My favourite track at the moment is The More I See You, which I've heard Michael Buble cover with a big band. Peter opts for an uptempo cha-cha, which works beautifully and has me pushing the 'repeat' button non-stop.

If you love New Vintage, then spread the word! Peter Grant is the next jazz wunderkind and is poised to take the world by storm.

5 out of 5 stars Must be in everyone's cd player.......2006-07-22

I bought this CD off the AmazonUK site several weeks ago, and it has not been out of the cd player yet! I can't possibly believe that this young man is under 20 years old! His voice is so perfect for the song choices on this CD. I have always enjoyed the 'standards', and hearing young singers & musicians carrying the torch is fantastic. I hope people here in the US learn of Peter Grant and will enjoy this CD as much as I am. It's quite often that I end up on the UK Amazon site looking for music that my UK friends have over there, but which doesn't quite make the ocean crossing to the US sites. I owe those that told me of Peter quite a large pint of ale! Ta!

        5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic CD.......2006-06-27

As a Brit living in the US I was not familiar with Peter Grant. As a member of the Sinatra Music Society UK I noticed mention of this young singer in their "Perfectly Frank" newsletter. My son told me of his climb in the UK charts so on his advice I purchased a copy of "New Vintage" in an HMV store. To say that I was completely bowled over is an understatement. I have played this disc over and over upon my return to the States. "Joanna" is simply gorgeous and I am bombarding my American friends with it. I also love "The More I see you", "You're the First, the Last, my Everything", "On Days Like THese" the arrangements are superb. In fact I love the whole album - please buy it - you will love it and not be disappointed.Barbara Pearson, Arlington, VA.

5 out of 5 stars Pop / Classical Instrumental album good for day dreaming.......2003-03-16

I bought this album while doing the wine tasting thing in the Napa Valley. I don't really know how to explain it, but this music really goes well with things like wine tasting, day dreaming, and quiet picnics. Its a very soothing set of instrumental songs from different artists. Mostly light pop and classical sounding.

My personal Favorite is The Dream Princess by Gerry Schubert. You can't help but day dream about nostalgic moments in your past, or past loves.

Ah, the '80s. Gene loved Jezebel; Berlin was more a band than a city; folks of all races and creeds would gather together on weekends to Wang Chung. Those hazy, lazy days are commemorated in Geffen Vintage 80s, Volume 1. As the title implies, this is only Geffen stuff (Madness, Debbie Harry, Stan Ridgway, Plimsouls, Ric Ocasek, a half-dozen others), so you get your Quarterflash singing "Take Me to Heart" but no Pat Benatar singing "We Live for Love." Oh, well. That's another volume. --Steven Stolder

          3 out of 5 stars totally so-so 80's.......2002-07-31

Half good, half bad. The good half however is really good. The songs by Quarterflash, Madness, and Debbie Harry are all classic 80's. But it's "Emotion in motion" by Ric Ocasek, and "No more words" by Berlin that makes this collection well worth the two bucks I got it for used. Would you pay full price for a collection that nobody reviewed in seven years? Only if you want to Wang Chung tonight.
