4 out of 5 stars Pleasant music but..........2006-11-03

This group can't really decide what they want. The influence of Jan Garbarek changes the tonal quality of the songs. When he is playing they are less subdued which isn't necessarily a good thing. The pianist is outstanding as is the percussionist thus the 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Laid Back Jazz .......2006-06-08

"Neighbourhood" by Manu Katche, with Jan Garbareck, Tomasz Stanko, Marcin Wasilewski and Slawomir Kurkiewicz - 2005, ECM Label.

Drummer, Manu Katche, has been making a name for himself as one of the world's better drummers. That may be a matter of opinion but I confess I do like him pretty much. I would describe his style as `soft-spoken'. I first heard the cut "February Sun" from this CD on Cable Radio before I ordered it. I love the Scandinavian Jazz genre from the ECM label so when I saw the incredible artists accompanying Katche, ordering this CD was a no-brainer for me.

This CD is a bit of a departure from the typical ECM album. This is an easy album to listen to, maybe a little too easy for some. The music is quiet, moody, melodic and perhaps not-very-challenging for some of you. When my wife first heard a few cuts, she said "that's nice music". She hates avant guard jazz so that should give you an idea just how smooth this CD is.

Some negative reviewers complained that this CD was nothing more than smooth jazz but that misses the mark. There's more here than just smooth jazz. Jan Garbareck, Tomasz Stanko and Marcin Wasilewski on piano keep it interesting enough. Manu Katche's drumming is quite good and he manages to stay out of the way of the other musicians. I like bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz playing on this CD as well. The group as a whole reminds me a bit of the Swedish group E.S.T.

If you can imagine, Jan Garbareck, and Tomasz Stanko, playing with E.S.T. then you can imagine what the group sounds like. Those two horn players do some really nice work together and are worth the price of the CD alone.

My modest system (hybrid tube-integrated and MMG speakers) gives a very nice sweet presentation of this type of music. It's detailed enough to bring Katche's percussion forward and give the horns a biting presence. Plus it does a fantastic job of realistically imaging small jazz groups like this.

I recommend the CD for those that want a laid back change of pace, especially if you're a Jan Garbareck, and/or Tomasz Stanko fan.

1 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz Aaaaa... NO!!!!!.......2006-05-02

EMC, a label known for polished recording and production fails on this bum production. Listen to any sample and try to remember that this is an EMC release, and I'm not a huge fane of the label, but this music is what they should play for recovering cancer patients in the hospital. Plane and simple, this music sucks, and that's coming from a mid-twenties musician with 3,000 jazz recordings -K.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Just Excellent.......2006-04-17

I am a Tomasz Stanko fan. I tried this CD on a whim since Tomasz was playing on it. I absolutley love it. A very beautiful CD that is very pleasing to my ear. Wonderful, slow, rhythmic melodies. One of my all time favorite Jazz CD's and I have ~ 1500 of them.

2 out of 5 stars a dissapointment, with a few redeeming qualities.......2006-03-01

while i'm not that familiar with a lot of katche's work, when i saw the personnel on this disc i happily plunked down my money. stanko and 2 of his young trio and jan garbarek? how could i go wrong?

obviously, quite wrong. this may be the best smooth jazz album ever made. however, if you don't like smooth jazz, that isn't saying much.

it's katche, really, that ruins this album. a previous reviewer referred to this music as "light." very true. but it's also harmonically and rhythmically simplistic, giving no challenges to the improvisers whatsoever. it's handcuffing, relegating a great young bassist's baselines to ostinato "grooves" that go nowhere.

stanko tries to break out a bit, playing a few of his trademark "whisper to a scream" lines, but they don't fit in this unimaginative, "smooth" music. wasieleski's usual brilliant uses of free rhythm are locked into adult contemporary grooves.

at times, katche hangs back and lets the rest of the group shine a bit, which keeps this from being a 1 star album. but basically, it's easy listening, something you can put on when your friends who think dave sanborn is jazz come over for dinner.

this comes a such a dissapointment because of the quality of the players, and i sincerely hope no one who buys this record is hearing stanko and his young cohorts for the first time, as it shows none of their true talents and personality. do yourself a favor and check out "suspended night" or "soul of things."

i know garbarek (whose vast output is all over the map, sometimes great) has recorded with katche quite a bit in recent years, and his "in praise of dreams," (which i admittedly haven't heard)was similarly panned as being overly "smooth" by many. this is a shame, as he is a great artist who should be recognized for his achievements, not this misstep.

stanko fans beware.

It's a good mix between L.A. Guns, Dangerous Toys and all those 80's glam rock bands. They just had the bad luck to release their album in a time where all the glam bands where getting signed. So they were one out tons of the same kind of band, but still very good.

      4 out of 5 stars Hard-Rocking Sheryl Crow!.......2006-11-15

"There Goes the Neighborhood" was one among several great singles released from her 1998 "Globe Sessions" album. The "A-side" is probably the closest Crow ever came to the sound of the Rolling Stones ( Exile on Main Street ). Great rocker and a live favorite.

"Straight to the Moon" is a rare ( and fine ) non-album track - very similar to "Resuscitation" - but with completely different lyrics.

"My Favorite Mistake" is an acoustic live-version!

4 out of 5 stars A Funky And Catchy Alternative Rock Pop Hit.......2005-01-09

A recent rediscovery of Sheryl Crow's music has made me appreciate it more than I think I ever did. This time last year I was besotted with the woman, but then throughout this year as I explored different artists such as Bjork and Tori Amos, she kind of faded into the background. However, I popped in her self-titled sophomore album the other week and was thrilled to rediscover that the freshness of her music has survived until this very day from way back in the mid-90's. That second album followed the multi-platinum "Tuesday Night Music Club," and contained some of Sheryl's most recognisable hit singles, such as "Home," "A Change Would Do You Good," "If It Makes You Happy," and the evergreen "Everyday Is A Winding Road."

A year later Sheryl returned to the music scene with her third album, entitled "The Globe Sessions." It didn't sell as much as her last two albums, but fans agreed that it was her strongest material to date. This is most evident on the singles that were released from it. The first single from the album was "My Favorite Mistake," and the follow-up to this was "There Goes The Neighborhood." This is a rather interesting Sheryl Crow song because a lot of people like it, but then again, a lot don't. I kind of fall down the middle, because whilst I think it's got a great funky catchy beat, it's a bit dated and kind of drab.

The song opens with a strange sound that reminds me of a radio station trying to tune in, we then hear an argument between two men which fades out as some funky clapping starts. The first verse then begins as Sheryl sings, "Hey let's party, let's get down, let's turn the radio on this is the meltdown. Get out the camera, take a picture, drag queens and the freaks are all out on the town. And cowboy Jane's in bed. Nursing a swollen head." Sheryl then sings the first chorus as the trumpets start to play, "Sunshine Sally and Peter Ustanov don't like the scene anyhow. I dropped acid on a Saturday night just to see what the fuss was about. And there goes the neighborhood."

The catchy clapping then starts again and Sheryl sings the second verse, "The photo chick made to look sickly is standing in her (...)in the shower. She plays the guitar in the bathroom while the police dust her mother's plastic flowers. And Schoolboy John's in jail. Making a killing through the US mail." Sheryl then sings the chorus again before the trumpets break out for a funky instrumental. This is my favourite part of the song. It then slows down and the clapping starts up again with the trumpets as Sheryl sings, "This is the movie of a screenplay of the book about a girl who meets a junkie. The messenger gets shot down just for carrying the message to a flunkie. We can't be certain who the villains are 'cause everyone's so pretty. But the afterparty's sure to be a wing-ding as it moves into your city."

Sheryl then sings the chorus a few more times before a saxophone that is so predominant in this song plays it out. Bobby Keys plays this and I must say he is very good! Overall this is a very good Sheryl song and one of my favourites from her third album. It's not amazing and does get a bit boring after a while, but I'm sure you can overlook this and seek out the best in this funky rock pop song!

4 out of 5 stars I have not found one of her songs I don't like.......1999-04-24

sheryl crow has great music and I'm sure she has inspired many to take up singing and songwriting

4 out of 5 stars Bonus track makes this worthwhile.......1998-11-30

CD 1 of a 2-part set. Tracks are: 1. "There Goes the Neighborhood" (radio edit #1) 2. "You Always Get Your Way" (non-LP track) 3. "Hard To Make a Stand" (Live).

Though not one of her best recent songs, "You Always Get Your Way" has a laid-back, country feel that is entertaining to hear Sheryl tackle. Although if this song were on the CD, I might not like it as much next to such great songs as "My Favorite Mistake" and "Am I Getting Through".

There are an awful lot of live versions of the songs from "Sheryl Crow" out there and "Hard to Make a Stand" on this single is no better or worse than any of the rest of them. The bonus track is what makes this a worthwhile purchase.
