Moonlight in Vermont [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
In 1952, guitar virtuoso Johnny Smith began recording for Teddy Reig's Roost Records and he hit big with his first session. Adding Stan Getz to his regular quartet, he created a spellbinding version of "Moonlight In Vermont" which became a best-selling record far beyond the jazz audience.

Reig paired Smith with Getz again and then with Zoot Sims and Paul Quinichette. While they never matched their first hit in sales, the created some great jazz. All 16 tunes by Smith with these tenor giants are gathered on this CD, remastered in 24 but from the original tapes.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful voice! .......2007-06-26

This Cd is a very nice compilation of some of Margaret's best known recordings from "days gone by". It's quite wonderful!

The re-recordings are well done. The selection of songs are perfect,--- showing the range of Margaret's voice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-03-25

I had forgotten how really good Margaret Whiting was. Her voice is really pure and tone is great, especially on ballads. Guilty remains my favorite, but even on some of the corny stuff, she shines.

This CD is a bargan at any price. How did we lose good music?

5 out of 5 stars Best singer of the late forties.......2004-10-14

Maggie Whiting was born for a career in music, as her father was a successful songwriter and had many friends in the business. So, all she needed to be a successful singer was a reasonably good voice. In fact, she had a wonderful voice, ideally suited to the romantic songs that provided her with her greatest hits.

With access to the finest songs available at the time Maggie recorded the original versions of several songs that have become popular classics including Moonlight in Vermont, Far away places and Baby, it's cold outside. I've heard several versions of these songs, but Maggie's originals are hard to beat.

My particular favorite song of Maggie's, A tree in the meadow, was actually her biggest hit, but there are not many covers of this song around. Could this be because meadows themselves are a rarity these days?

Maggie was also a major influence on popular music via her duets with country star Jimmy Wakely. Probably conceived as an idea to give Jimmy some pop success, these duets were not only very successful on the pop charts, but also on the country charts. And so it was that country/pop crossover was firmly established.

This compilation includes many of Maggie's hits of the forties (her best years), among them being Moonlight in Vermont, A tree in the meadow, Slipping around (with Jimmy Wakely), Baby it's cold outside (with Johnny Mercer), Guilty, Oh but I do, You do, Pass that peace pipe, Now is the hour, Forever and ever and Far away places. Of these, only Moonlight in Vermont failed to make the American top ten. Its comparative failure as a single (it peaked at fifteen) shows that over-reliance on charts is a mistake.

Maggie was at her peak commercially in the late forties, but still had a few hits in the early fifties, when she started to include more upbeat songs in her repertoire. None of her fifties hits are included here The birth of rock'n'roll killed her pop career, but she continued to record excellent music, most notably the Jerome Kern tribute album.

The strongest compilation of Maggie's hits is the double CD, Complete Capitol hits, but this is an excellent compilation at a much lower price and (it seems) more easily available. If you only want a single CD of Maggie's music, this is a good one to choose.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Whiting.......2001-08-26

This is a compilation of some of Margaret Whiting's greatest hits. The sound is beautiful. The voice is magnificent. Fans of America's best popular music should enjoy the album thoroughly.

5 out of 5 stars Mood Swings.......2006-07-31

In 1954, I started college as a guitar major, and was entranced by guitarists who could play "standards" in a manner that erased reality and created a mood that enveloped listeners. In those days, Johnny Smith was in the forefront of the pack. Now years later, listening to this CD still creates a mellow mood. I plan to use this CD as a holiday gift for my offspring. I know they will benefit from this timeless music, as will any person of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What an album.......2006-07-29

I can point to a few albums that really got me into jazz and this is one. Johnny plays on this album with Stan Getz and others. It is a great album. The title song was the Downbeat song of the year for 1952. One knock on Johnny Smith is that he wasn't jazz mainly because his playing was so clean--it sounded too rehearsed, too clean. There are a few outtakes one the CD that will put that to rest. Johnny, himself, admitted he never really thought of himself as a "jazz" guitarist, but more of a session musician. He was on staff with the NBC orchestra back in the day. I think one thing is clear though and this CD bears it out is that Johnny is an important guitarist in the history of jazz guitar. He is the connection between Charlie Christian, and Django Reinhardt to more contemporary players. It's ironic how a man with such a common name made such beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars Belongs in any Jazz Collection.......2005-09-26

This album is a jazz classic and definately belongs in any collection. Johnny Smith guitar style is fairly unique and while technically brilliant, there's always a purpose to the soloing. Also Stan Getz is just wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Alot of hints of modern jazz in this ol' album.......2004-06-14

This guy was really a great guitarist, and songwritter. On this album he has some of the most recognizeable jazz tunes ever, such as the classic 'yesterday'. This album really helps me close in the gap between old jazz, and modern jazz. He showcases alot of what was to come in the near future. This is a very good jazz album id recommend to any fan of jazz.

I can't stop playing this wounderful CD by Alise Ashby. It speaks to me at a soul level. It is great to help relive the stress from a busy day and relax too. I especially enjoy the different way the music has been arranged, uplifting yet gentle. Well done Alise, I look forward to your next CD.

      5 out of 5 stars Take a Wonderful Journey.......2000-02-16

A wonderful musical journey with lots of different musical colors. At the same time, relaxing and uplifting. Alise is a versatile composer and arranger - her work is original and broad-ranging with echoes of Classical and New Age as well as other stylistic influences. She creates a very full sound with her synthesized orchestrations. I think it would be lovely to drive along the rolling hilly roads of Vermont accompanied by Moonlight in Vermont! This CD should appeal to a wide group of listeners - it's beautiful music that can be listened to again and again. Enjoy!

From a romantic dinner for two, book-reading on a favorite chair, an afternoon on the sailboat...to yoga exercises on the living room floor, this music always seems to enhance the ambience. Ms. Ashby composes beautiful music - calming, positive, soothing and exciting. This CD is a mini-adventure and excellent indeed!

      4 out of 5 stars A safe bet.......2006-04-15

A 1977 studio recording apparently released originally in Japan, this session has been showing up with various packagings and often at bargain prices. The world's "most perfect" saxophonist is in fine form and in stellar company, most notably Tony Williams' drums (with Barry Harris' piano and Reggie Workman's bass). If, like me, you have a slight preference for Stitt on alto, you'll appreciate Sonny's decision to limit his playing on tenor to two tunes (both blues in Bb).

Sonny's playing on this date is neither as technically head-spinning as on the currently available "New York Jazz" nor as inspired as on the recently issued "Work Done" (a live set from 1976). So price might be the determining factor in deciding whether to acquire what is a solid but admittedly uneventful, predictable set of familiar standards by Stitt.

5 out of 5 stars Tight arrangements, expert playing, a gem of a program.......2003-11-29

If you appreciate the work of the early George Shearing Quintets, or Art Van Damme and his quintet work in the fifties, then you'll like this CD of 19 tracks. Johnny Smith was featured on one of Mr Van Damme's records if I recall correctly. But both Shearing and Van Damme, in appealing to a more popular market, could sometimes veer close to "cocktail music". There is no whiff of cocktails in the program on Moonlight in Vermont. Indeed, the drums, bass, piano combinations are uniformly powerful, and feature some of the masters of the "west coast" sound including Eddie Sanfranski. Even relatively less well known players such as Sanford Gold hold their own in some distinguished company - Stan Getz, Paul Quinichette, and Zoot Sims. Mr Smith is consistently superb and the music still sounds good after 50 years. This CD has SEVEN tracks additional to the original LP.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic recording that needs to be re-mastered........2002-11-14

Nearly 50 years after its inception, this recording indeed stands the test of time. Technology has taken leaps and bounds and I think a re-master to make the earlier tracks as clean as the later tracks would be greatly appreciated. If so, I would not hesitate to call this an absolutely essential album.

      5 out of 5 stars Just music, nothing more . . ........2001-04-14

No heroin habit, no personal inconsistencies to make his life overly complicated and dramatic, no expatriation to Paris or religious fads to sell, no distinguishing anything. Johnny Smith lets his playing do the talking. No one ever played the guitar better. No album has ever been more about the music, and less about peripheral things. Now you know who Johnny Smith is, listen to him and hear the truth behind the myth which says "It's all about the music."

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Guitarist Ever!.......2000-01-09

I am a jazz guitarist , and can honestly say J.S. was the greatest who ever played, in my opinion

5 out of 5 stars Pure, clean, unadulterated artistry.......1999-12-04

In modern times, Johnny Smith has become unappreciated and forgotten for the superb artistry he displayed as a jazz guitarist-maestro. Listen to Moonlight in Vermont. It is unique for its combination of pithy feeling and technical virtuosity. Technically, Smith burns on single-note leads and soothes with inventive chord melody playing. Perhaps his style sometimes borders on being too precious and precise, but this is trifling criticism. His style comes from the "cool" school of jazz (Lennie Tristano, et al.), but he imbues his music with too much controlled emotion to be called purely "cool." Also, fine tenor sax work from Stan Getz and Zoot Sims serve as excellent complements to Smith's fretboard excursions. A must have CD for any fan of true, original jazz guitar (eg, fans of Jimmy Raney, Wes Montgomery, Tal Farlow, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, etc.).
