Inner Urge [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The presence of John Coltrane's pianist and drummer, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones respectively, give this quartet album weight and passion. Henderson's playing is incandescent throughout. The first three selections are exciting, probing Henderson originals that soar, but his interpretations of the Duke Pearson ballad "You Know I Care" and Cole Porter's "Night And Day" are equally vivid.

4 out of 5 stars not john coltrane.......2006-11-02

i'm almost tempted to say henderson sounds the way he does here because of mccoy tyner and elvin jones from the john coltrane quartet. there might be some truth in that statement. coltrane and henderson are different stylists, maybe a similar sound, but different approaches to the tenor. henderson is worth listening to for his own style. a comparison closer to henderson than coltrane is kenny garrett who, consciously or not, is influenced by henderson, on inner urge anyway, than, admittedly by a good many listeners, john coltrane.

elvin jones solo on the title track is a bonus for his fans.

elvin jones and mccoy tyner play like a pair of seasoned partners.

5 out of 5 stars I Urge Jazz Fans to Buy "Inner Urge".......2004-06-30

After a brief absence in the Blue Note catalog, I am delighted the label had the urge to reissue "Inner Urge" via the RVG series. This is by all accounts Joe Henderson's masterpiece. He made some other excellent efforts in the 1960s (several of which I have previously reviewed, including "Our Thing," "Mode for Joe" and "Straight, No Chaser") and he had a remarkable Grammy-winning comeback in the 90s, but "Inner Urge" is his best album in a storied career. Recorded on November 30, 1964, this session places the tenor saxophonist and bassist Bob Cranshaw in the company of half of the mighty Coltrane Quartet -- McCoy Tyner on piano and Elvin Jones on drums -- only days before that group would cut the jazz landmark, "A Love Supreme." It is no surprise then that Henderson sounds his most 'Trane-like at points on this disc, particularly on the title track, the searching "El Barrrio," and the Cole Porter standard "Night and Day." But in fairness, J.H. has his own unique musical voice that could never be mistaken for J.C., and much of the Coltrane comparisons should be attributed to the signature supporting style of McCoy and Elvin. In fact, one need look no further than the Monk-flavored "Isotope" or Duke Pearson's ballad "You Know I Care" to dismiss any copycat claims. "Inner Urge" is indeed its own jazz masterwork and Henderson's essential contribution to the watershed year of 1964.

5 out of 5 stars THE Joe Henderson Album.......2001-01-28

The reviewer directly below can be entitled to his own opinion, but this album is amazing not simply for Henderson's playing (that's a given), but for the compositions as well. The title cut is simply one of the greatest tracks in the Blue Note catalog. The way it is structured makes for great improvising. The tension-release inherent in the track is powerfully exploited by Henderson as he builds intensity in each chorus, his dark tone perfectly matching the composition. His second solo in even more powerful as he plays repeated rhythmic figures and rips along scales with a passionately charged tone. 'Isotope' is almost as good. Henderson builds every chorus almost as well as Inner Urge. As his solo continues, you keep hoping he will go on for another chorus. And he keeps his ideas varied and constantly changing-very modern, but still very bluesy. 'El Barrio' has much of the intesity of Inner Urge but in a less structured format. 'On You Know I Care,' Henderson shows how versatile his extremely dark tone is. On this ballad, he employs his tone in a very appropriate manner. 'Night and Day' is an excellent closer; uptempo and full of rhythmic turns and singable phrases in Joe's solo. The two best tracks here, however, are 'Inner Urge' and 'Isotope.' In the liner notes, Joe is quoted as saying 'Inner Urge' was a very personal composition as it fulfilled a certain urgency inside of him. That urgency and power expressed in 'Inner Urge' is what truly makes this album Joe's best. Great album.

3 out of 5 stars There's a better Joe Henderson during this era..........2000-04-05

Although there's a reluctance to go against the grain of the reviews listed above for this session...understand, it's a sterling recording, great muscianship, and typically studly Joe Henderson as leader material, but it is respectfully submitted that the album tends to be somewhat bland. The Leader does his best work in a quintet, sextet or more instrument setting, and this recording seems to support the supposition. Of course, there is and will probably not be a quartet of the likes of John Coltrane's classic set, so any comparison is inherently unfair. As great as Mr Henderson is, this recording does not demand one's attention throughout. Perhaps it's the compositions. However, I'd still listen to it over just about any other tenor leader work of the mid 60s. Hey, genius calls for tough critique.

5 out of 5 stars A true masterpeice of jazz.......2000-03-23

In my opinion, this fourth issue as a leader for Blue Note is the landmark album where Joe Henderson (tenor sax) completes his emergence as a mature, inventive and visionary jazz composer, tenorman and leader, joining the likes of John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. Most of Joe's work on this album is powered with emotion and invention. And what was the magical element in common to the greatest work off all three tenormen? The team of McCoy Tyner (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) in the rhythm section - a team that has lured many a bassist into their game, including Bob Cranshaw (bass), who is brilliant on this day in November 1964. McCoy and Elvin are sewn together like two distinctly unique and beautiful colors and textures of cloth, all laid out flat, expertly and intricately stitched together to form your favorite quilt - the one you just love to lay on top of you. This quartet worked very well together, providing the opportunity for each individual to shine in his own light. The seminal sessions of Coltrane, Shorter and Henderson were typically quartet staffings, providing the leader the utmost power to set the scene and explore at will. The support provided by this rhythm section for Joe Henderson was truly inspirational.

The quality of the recording is very good.

Inner Urge - A unique Henderson invention, this medium-swing piece has a pleasantly dark melody followed by an extended bass solo by Bob, during which he quotes bits of the head often. Joe is next at the front, and he expresses himself freely, both inside and out, behind the anxious prodding of his accomplished rhythm section. McCoy follows in his richly inventive and original style with an extremely powerful and adept improvisation. Elvin is awarded an extended solo for his enriching support of the others, and delivers a magnificent invention that only Elvin could have conceived.

Isotope - A witty and playful head written by Joe, played in unison by Joe and McCoy. Joe starts his solo here in a far more relaxed atmosphere, and behaves appropriately, yet the lengthy solo yields plenty of time to raise the energy level. Joe looks out the window, but never really steps outside. McCoy is his unmistakable self, yet keeps things relatively straight ahead, until Elvin forces him out on the porch for some really fresh air. Elvin trades some extraordinary 4's with Joe before the head finds its way back home.

El Barrio - A masterpiece of Joe's, this one begins with Joe alone, honking out some mysterious, ethereal calls to the soul, which emerges faithfully as the group fades in behind him very slowly and softly. The entire work is seasoned with a just a bit of Spanish flavor. Joe continues his long, dark, haunting tale of woe, and the story freely and clearly evokes colorful and elaborate images. Joe's work here is truly remarkable. I was hypnotized by the clarity of his vision. The epic story told, McCoy tells his story as only he can, with a blazing right hand over a combination of pedal-depressed drones and chromatic chord explosions. He studies a variety of colors and textures, describing them all very well. Joe creeps back in and takes the piece home. A truly unique masterpiece, proud to hang in the world's greatest museums.

You Know I Care - I was gently landed back on Earth by this Duke Pearson standard, stated beautifully by Joe in the warm, rich style we just forgot he had. His solo his passionate, inventive and very well constructed. McCoy always plays the ballads straight, but he also plays them very well. His solo is witty and displays his enviable technique.

Night And Day - A Cole Porter standard played in a new light. As light-hearted and pretty as this piece is, the boys get it all nice and dirty right from the start. Joe is unrestrained and playful with the changes. Uncharacteristically for a ballad, McCoy plays this one a little bit his own way as well. A very traditional work played in a very original and imaginative way.

This whole album (even the standards!) really got to me. Of the dozen or so Henderson-as-a-leader albums I own, I rank this as his very best. It's one of jazz's greatest tenor players with one of the jazz's greatest rhythm sections, during one of greatest periods in jazz. I've given 5 stars to a lot of great jazz albums, and this one is better than most of them. After this, look into Joe's other Blue Notes, including 'In 'N Out', 'Mode For Joe' and 'Page One'.

5 out of 5 stars Inner Urge-Joe Henderson.......2000-03-22

An underrated masterpiece from one of jazz's most underrated masters. The influence of middle-period Coltrane is prevalent, partially due to the appearance of McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones. The music is somewhat tighter and less avante-garde than Trane's, and Henderson shines with an approach entirely his own. In particular, the title track stands out as an expression of both beauty and tension in sonic shading, transcending the redundancy of jazz as a genre.

Although guitarist Larry Coryell was one of the premier jazz-fusion artists of the 1970s, he's played strong, straight-ahead guitar ever since he entered the jazz world in 1965. Backed here by drummer Yoron Israel, bassist Santi Debriano, and pianist John Hicks, Coryell delivers some of the best no-nonsense guitar licks this side of Jim Hall and Pat Martino. Coryell bops and weaves several jazz standards, including Harold Land's "Compulsion" and "Terrain" and the tricky melodic maze of the title track by Joe Henderson. Herbie Hancock's midtempo "Dolphin Dance" is sweetly swung by Coryell and company, as is Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood." Ray Bryant's "Tonk" showcases Coryell's silky acoustic sound and "Turkish Coffee" spotlights his Joe Pass-like solo style. In short, this is a well-rounded CD by a well-rounded musician. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Jazz.......2001-02-17

Imagine that it's 1964. You're in lower eastside beatnik cafe, sipping on a Singapore sling and making small talk with your friends at the table. The lights are low and the music is playing. It's jazz -- calm, sophisticated, but with the uneasiness of an impending storm.

The discography of Larry Coryell -- at 57, still one of the most gifted and fascinating guitarists in American music -- is almost as varied as his mercurial, muscular improvisations. In the past five years alone, his releases have ranged from a solid hard-edged fusion effort, "Cause and Effect" (Tone Center), to an awfully good solo acoustic album, "Private Concert" (Acoustic Music), to last year's "New High" (Highnote), which augments a traditional piano-bass-drums rhythm section with trumpet and vibes. This latest album, "Inner Urge" establishes Coryell as one of the finest guitar players in the traditional jazz genre.

The style and most of the material for the album come from the heady early 1960s. The opening salvo begins with the Harold Land classic Compulsion. Bebop is in full swing here, with Don Sickler on trumpet sounding like a young Chet Baker. He appears on only two cuts, but he establishes a graceful, yet forceful attack. Pianist extraordinaire John Hicks never plays a wrong note or never goes down a wrong path. He is superb throughout.

Santi Debriano on bass composed the second track, and it begins with a jaunting series of simple repeating bass lines, going into a similar melody that Coryell twists and turns. The middle part switches to standard blues, giving the guitar plenty of room to open up. Debriano is given plenty of solo time throughout the album, which he handles with finesse.

The highlight of the album is with Joe Henderson's title track, Inner Urge. The young drummer Yoron Israel, who plays with a unique style that adds precision to the entire album, brings this sneaky modal piece to the fore. Both Hicks and Coryell play in top form.

On Tonk, Coryell plays an acoustic guitar, accompanied by only bass and drums. His playing was never better.

A fine version of Herbie Handcocks's Dolphin Dance is performed with great delicacy and control. Never overpowering, the piano and guitar create a rich tapestry of sound.

The final piece, Harold Land's Terrain, harks the return of the quintet, as the trumpet augments the band. On this one, the solos are played very much like they would have been from the Land's original lineup with Wes Montgomery in the early 1960s.

This album is highly recommended for lovers of traditional jazz.
