Big Phat Big Band sound that energizes. New ideas, high energy, great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Gordon Goodwin Rocks!.......2007-01-04

Goodwin's Big Phat Band scores a big win with this album. It's the best jazz available. What a tight group!

5 out of 5 stars Sooooooooooo GoooooooooooDWIN ner.......2006-08-10

I wouldn't know how to be technical about it - it just swings and then some. The tightness of the sections is as good as the knockout soloists.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Student's Textbook.......2005-08-02

If you're a trumpet player looking for some absolutely phenomenal lead playing, look no further. Wayne Bergeron can really knock the walls down. The band is tight, and the mix is powerful. Yes, it's a thrown-together studio band, but it features the highest tier of musicians out there. In one word, this band is SOLID.

4 out of 5 stars Was my favorite CD...........2005-03-27

Note: Was. Now my tastes in jazz have been changed, and I see this album in a new light. This is a great CD for people who are just getting into jazz music. It's pleasing to the ear, easy to understand, and really great music all around. But I have to say just how sick I am of this group. When I hear it now I can only think of how tacky it is and how geared towards sales it must be. Honestly, listen to the Dave Holland Big Band compared to Gordon Goodwin, and the difference is undeniable. I do understand much of this is a matter of preference and tastes, but I wish to point people in the direction of (in my opinion at least) better and more sophisticated jazz. Another note: please, all high school jazz bands, stop playing Gordon's stuff. You're butchering it and over playing this good music into the ground.
So, if you're new to the genre and are looking for a good CD to listen to, Gordon Goodwin is an excellent choice. If you want something that offers a little more, look elsewhere, there are better groups out there.

5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful music!.......2007-07-16

I haven't heard anything this good or tight since Buddy Rich's bands of the 70's and 80's! Each track delivers something special and just when you think you've heard it all, along comes the next thing. The really amazing thing of all is that these guys are doing this for FUN!!! I was privileged to see their show in St. Louis in April - brought tears and chills.

If you haven't caught GG's soprano solo in "Second Chances", do so right away. It starts out somewhat simply but builds to such a climax that it makes the hair on your arms stand on end.

This band and its work is just awesome. Can't wait for the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-07-03

If you love jazz, this CD is a must, and if you hate jazz this CD is a must. No wonder Gordon Goodwin is highly respected in the music world. This guy really knows how to put it all together. What a CD. love it!

5 out of 5 stars Where Have You Been?.......2005-04-23

First person to review this album? This is nuts! It is such an utterly great thing, and no-one's talking? Which amazon is this? Andromeda's?

Anyway, I simply rest my case on the utterly superb and lyrical Second Chances, towards the end, tucked away amongst all the other unbelievably GREAT PLAYING WRITING AND ORCHESTRATION on this SUPERB cd.

With a galaxy of superb contemporary music talent and completely original compositional and arrangement skill, this album can only ever grow in greatness.
