This is Sutton's third CD in as many years, and it marks her rapid maturation into one of the most complete contemporary jazz singers, one who can range from high-speed scat to moody, emotion-charged ballads. She can fly through chord changes with real harmonic invention, as on her witty version of "Ding-dong! The Witch Is Dead," while her wistful way with a ballad recalls June Christy on the title song. Her warmth shows on Willie Nelson's "Crazy," with pianist Christian Jacob's jazz harmonies helping to develop Sutton's personal take on the country standard. She's joined here by her working trio of Jacob, Trey Henry on bass, and Ray Brinker on drums, and the group sounds both inspired and inspiring, alert to the nuances in Sutton's vocals and quick to supply any needed stimulus. The trio's welling power on the modally inflected "Out of this World" prods Sutton to some stunning high notes, while several special moments arise between Sutton and Henry, as on "Alone Together," with her voice intertwining with his elastic bass glissandos. This is varied and entertaining work, with Sutton's musicianship apparent everywhere.

Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27
It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.
The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30
What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.
As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.
Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.
A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23
Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

Nice and Cool.......2007-07-08
This fine example of popular cool singing is very fine and agreable, although I'm not quite certain that the jazz criteria are met to the foolest extent (there are equally cool but more jazzy artists - for instance Mel Torme)... This is very good singing and quite competent orchestral playing, but on the level of lesser performances by Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.
Great thing is that this CD brings both versions of the album; I recommend the later stereo recording; Christy seems to develop a bit between two versions.
Rugolo's arrangements are OK, but not quite to my taste.
It must be June..........2007-03-08
Of all the great jazz ladies, June Christy is still very much a particular favourite of mine. Her singing is totally organic, straight to the point. Nothing sounds artificial or forced. Here, Blue Note Records has reissued both stereo and mono versions of her 1953 album 'Something Cool' on one great-value disc. While Christy found initial fame under the musical direction of Stan Kenton, her series of albums on the Capitol label (through to the early 1960s) acutely displayed her sublime talents as a jazz diva, and never more so than on her debut platter.
Under the guidance of Pete Rugolo and his orchestra, Christy glides through "It Could Happen to You" (in one of the greatest arrangements EVER), "Midnight Sun", "I Should Care", and "I'll Take Romance" (also memorably covered by Eydie Gorme that same year). The title track, "Something Cool" (B. Barnes), became Christy's signature song.
The original 1953 album of 'Something Cool' was a big success for June Christy and established her as a formidable talent. During the first innovations of stereo LPs, Christy went back into the Capitol studios with Rugolo to re-record the album for the stereophonic format in 1960.
Technically, there isn't much to distinguish the stereo and mono cuts of 'Something Cool'. June Christy delivers fabulous vocals on both of them, but brings a refined showmanship to the stereo version. Her rendition of "Something Cool" is a bit more calculated and smokey on the 1960 set, too.
It's so wonderful to be able to relish June Christy on both versions of her landmark debut album.

Two Albums over the time STEREO came into power.......2006-09-06
You HAVE to get this album not only for June Christy's great skill as a band vocalist, and for the stellar playing of the many fine jazz and studio cats who laid down these tracks (many come from Kenton. . .but don't think that this is just another Kenton album. . Christy definitely had her own album here!).
You HAVE to get this to hear what the exact same arrangements played by mostly the same performers sound like in beautiful HiFi MONO and then again in beautiful STEREO. It is a treat to your hearing faculties to compare the two. Like DAY and NIGHT. . .Night and Day. . .Hey! There's a song in that line. . .
The album is great with or without the Mono / Stereo thing. . .but I sure wish this kind of thing was done more often (compare one version of a particular recording, to a Re-recording of the same thing. It's great. By the way. . .
June Christy was an excellent singer, who became famous with Stan Kenton in the early 1950's. This album is a Concept Album, in the sense that it projects a sort of bluesy. . .boosey. . .saloon singer ethos. Christy is one who definitely lived this and sent out heartfelt sound in this arena. It is too bad that she did not avoid the ethos. But we can be happy that we have the wonderful sound of June really singing her heart out. The backing arrangements and band are second to none.

The Best.......2006-02-21
I missed her when I was a little kid in the 50s. It wasn't until I lived with a woman older than me in the 1970s who was a big fan from her own high school days that I heard June Christy. My father had been a big band fan and I was pretty familiar with Ella and Sara and Billie Holiday. I thought white girl singers at the time were all Rosemary Clooney and Doris Day. Then I heard June and she took my heart away. Now, at 55, I have all her capitol records, an autographed picture from the forties, a copy of her obituary that was published in the Chicago Tribune in 1990, and I still play her records (now CDs), and they still give me that exquisite joy you get from something that is emotionally perfect. This CD is particularly good, having first the mono recordings of these songs, and then the stereo recordings, in the right order. I believe this to be one of the first real concept type albums, in the sense that it fits together remarkably well, in the order that it is in. I know there was an initial shorter release on the older vinyl. And I know there are some ep versions of this set, but I am convinced that the order of the songs as it appears twice on this CD is the order that June and Pete Rugolo put it in and meant it to be heard in. This album/CD is a story, a narrative. And you can find in it a real person. June's singing, while not technically as good as some of her contemporaries, is stunning because of the intimacy she brings to the lyrics. She is right there, actually living the song. And the arrangements are just perfect. This is one of the greatest records anybody in any genre ever made.
Cause the weathers so hot..........2005-09-04
Recorded in the fifties under the direction of Pete Rugalo, one of the great albums of the era, "Something Cool", is not to be missed. If you are not familiar with," The Misty Miss Christy", you are in for a treat. A unique song stylist, who's voice will delight and spellbind you. This recording is the combined monoral and stereo sessions, for the album was so popular that they went back into the studio and re recorded tunes in the new process-stereo. The title tune is a story song about a woman in a bar who regales her gentleman caller with snapshots from her life-real or imagined. A great song on a disc that is loaded with memorable tunes. This is one of those "desert island" recordings. I'm listening to it at this very moment-it's the most!

Jenny Davis, Port Townsend WA.......2005-05-01
As a jazz vocalist (musician), I have to say Tierney Sutton is a jazz singer's singer! Ding Dong was inspirational, Show me is phenomenal. The tempo and time changes kept me interested. Some reviews have said that mixing the mood with ballads and uptempo, ruined it for them. Folks, thats jazz. Tierney Sutton is a jazz musician. I listen to this CD and feel inspired. The tunes were perfectly mixed with uptempo and ballads. It shows how versitle she is and how interesting she is as a musician. Can't wait to see her live someday! Absolutely Great! Highly recommend to all jazz singers/musicians. Go Tierney!
Great ballads, arrangements that grow on you.......2005-02-19
I saw the sweet, clever, catlike Tierney Sutton perched on a stool at Blues Alley in a sequined top last year. She puts on a great show. She has marvelous purring technique, she always hit notes dead center of the pitch. Without a pitch cue, she sang acapella for nearly five minutes before the rest of the band came in and came in right on pitch. Incredible. I asked her if she had perfect pitch, and she said "no", but it sounded like it to me. She never hits a note flat or sharp. She has perfect breath/ volume control, she breathes the song. (listen to the begining of Route 66.)
Best songs, most immediately appealing and enchanting are ballads and andante pieces. Ones with true emotion. "Something Cool" on the other hand, when she wants to, shows her ability to hold an audience in the palm of her hand. "Comes Love", "Refections", "Alone Together" "Out of this World" are luminous!
The French for singing, "chant", has the same root as "enchanting". Entertaining music should be enchanting, cast a spell. Tierney & group, on some of these tracks, shows off technique and imaginative arrangement, but can destroy the mood of the song. "Ding dong the Witch" (scat) is irritating, but it wouldn't be memorable if it were sung straight! The tempos in "The Best is Yet to Come" and "Show me" seem too fast.
So some wonderful songs, some that take getting used to and an irritating one. Her great technique is captured on this album, which is it's strength and sometimes it's weaknesss. Back-up band is spot-on perfect, especially Trey Henry on bass.
For an album of more immediate appeal, (more even enchanting?) Tierney Sutton's new Sinatra Tribute "Dancing in the Dark". She shows how she can weave a more consistent spell, when she focuses more on feeling.
I found after I listen to this album, more, I guess I get used to some of the things, which initially seemed jarring, so it really grows on you. Her rendition of "Route 66" shows wonderful control of pitch and volume and is one of my favorites. What Tierney and gang are trying to do, as a Jazz group, not Pop, is to find innovative ways of presenting songs we are quite familiar with, to catch our attention. Mostly, they succeed.
I wish I could raise my rating to 5 stars, now.
Recording quality is truely State of the Art, recorded with the listed audiophile equipment, especially on the SACD version.
BRILLIANT ! (but not for scat-phobes).......2005-02-04
This is an amazing album. I can't stop listening to Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!. And her scatting is amazing. I am playing it for everyone I can get to listen. Those who don't appreciate or simply don't like scatting probably won't like this album however.
I Was Right.......2004-03-29
I said in a review of another album that I thought Tierney Sutton and her band might be the real deal. I was right. I can't stop listening to her
A special first encounter.......2004-01-22
With most female vocalists, I either fall in love with the voice or I am left totally cold. Occasionally I have no opinion but mostly it's one way or the other in the extreme. With Tierney Sutton, I'm in love with the voice. Completely in love with the voice. This was my first encounter with Ms Sutton but it will not be the last--her others albums are on my wish list and soon to be on my CD changer.
Reading previous reviews, I can see how some people might not respond to her voice. Someone said the presentation was cold and compared it to opera. That's odd to me since Maria Callas is sometimes able to bring me to tears when she sings an aria in a language I cannot even understand. Someone else hated it because they don't like scatting. I'm not big on scatting either but it's not going to ruin my day when it's done by someone with a voice like Ms Sutton's.
It's all in what you respond to in the music. I give this 5 stars without reservations.

First making her reputation as vocalist with Stan Kenton's orchestra, June Christy was the ideal vocalist for the high-art ambitions of the progressive jazz movement. Her diction was impeccable, her phrasing often inspired, and as this reissue of her classic Something Cool--augmented by another 12 tracks recorded between 1953 and 1955--so ably demonstrates, her technique was extraordinary, allowing her to navigate the most abstract melody with accurate pitch and rhythmic confidence. That's no small feat, for the orchestrations that Pete Rugolo fashioned for these recordings are often harmonically dense, with layered chords, sudden interpolations, and odd metric shifts. Few of the songs could be called standards. Many have melodies that are hardly hummable. Some, like Rugolo's own "Look out up There," seem bop inspired, but Christy not only sings them, she makes them her own, balancing execution with a subtly nuanced, expressive dimension. The results are often dramatic, detached, and highly memorable, whether the song is well known--"This Time the Dream's on Me," "Midnight Sun"--or as obscure as "Kicks" or the previously unreleased, anonymously penned "Love Doesn't Live Here Anymore." This is an intriguing view of a gifted singer and a window on a remarkable and overlooked repertoire. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Easy to overlook.......2006-11-16
A little jazzy, but more pop-like for the era. Her style is very measured and polished. The selection is great, lot's of quaint social norms included in the lyrics! Fun to listen to, with a full orchestra on many songs. Very representative of the early to mid 50's sound. Expressive and fun!
My All Time Favorite.......2005-04-11
This is my all time favorite CD. It contains the original mono version of "Something Cool" plus some singles and about half the album "This is June Christy."
If it were not for this album, I would not listen to jazz. This album is priceless because it contains a bunch of singles, plus some unreleased tracks that are not available elsewhere.
It is currently only available in this form from the BMG Music club, but you might be able to get used copies from Amazon. I highly recommend this album to everyone. The current release version is the one that has both the mono and the stereo re-recording of "Something Cool," but I highly recommend getting the one that has the 13 bonus tracks.
June Christy is the best singer of all time!
Fine original LP, with excellent added stuff..........2004-11-24
There are two "Something Cool" collections. The newer one came out in 2001 and has mono and stereo versions of each of the 12 songs on the original 1953 record. This version, however, (Mine carries the Jazz Hertitage label) has the original LP contents buried in the middle and a dozen fine, lesser-known love songs surrounding it. Overall, this gives you an hour of June's interesting vocals with a variety of accompaniment and in varied tempos. I am quite pleased with it, and I paid pretty much full price. She was one of the best of the female jazz singers in their Golden Era, the Fifties. If you already like her, but don't have these songs, add them before this version becomes impossible to find. If you are new to June, as I was, this is a decent place to begin.
MISS CHRISTY IS SO COOL........2001-11-11
GREAT FEMALE JAZZ VOCALS AND SWINGING ARRANGMENTS MAKE THIS DISC A MUST FOR ANY COLLECTOR OF (REAL JAZZ). I COULD GO ON BUT BUY THE CD AND BECOME A BELIVER. COME ON A GIVE IT A SHOT YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID.P.S TELL YOUR JAZZ LOVING BUDDIES ABOUT THIS ONE.
Absolutely the best of June Christy.......2001-08-28
This is the best of June Christy. Sentimental, moody, swinging jazz vocal renditions. She was one of my favorites in the 50s along with Chris Connor. If you liked the 50s jazz vocalists, you'll love this album. And then try the Misty Miss Christy, and Chris Connor Sings the Lullabys of Birdland. I listen to these three albums over and over and over.

Customer Reviews:
30 dollars of pure fantastic Jazz of the highest caliber. Legendary!.......2005-11-27
Guys, fellows, cats, boppers, swingers, Jazzlovers, take your wallet, take out of it your best 30 dollars, the best of them, the most green, the most new, the most fresh, the ones with the best smell, the most beautiful,... the ones you love the most and with them buy this album ABSOLUTLY. Buy it, don't make questions. Buy it. Believe me. I tell you my story. This album has been in the record shop I visit every week in my town for the last, I don't know 5 years I guess, maybe more because the new edition in the connossoir series is dated 1996. So maybe this album waited for me for 9 years. I remember I considered it a lot of times but each time I ended up buying something else. If I think that I could lose it, I fell sick. Now I Have bought it, I have it in my hands, I'm in front of my Avalon loudspeakers and I'm listening to it with tears in my eyes. It's absolutly splendid. This album from Jack Wilson is simply fantastic, legenadary I would call it. Absolutly memorable stuff. Memorable since the first listening. It's pure gold. One of the most satisfying listening I had in Jazz. And I am a Jazz musician and own thousands of Jazz albums from any era. The four compositions from Jack Wilson here are nothing less than superb. His playing absolutly exceptionl, he was technical AND lyrical at the same time. A perfect hard bopper. I point out the first and the fifth tunes as the most unusual stuff even if absolutly ipnotical tunes. They are modal stuff for the most part, oh, really great! The other tunes are originals tonal tunes from Wilson, Coltrane (Mr Day, a blues), Coleman and maybe a standard wich is called Serenata. Exceptional the contribution from Roy Ayers on vibes (Ray Brown's on the bass... nothing more to add). A really fantastic sound, piano and vibes, very balanced and inspiring. This album has immediatly became one of my favorites. It's untouchable. You absolutly have to buy this one. If you have a good hifi system you'll enjoy even a fantastic remastering. Wow, what an album! I can't do nothing but tap my feet and dance on my sofa' miming the instruments! WOWOWOOWOWOWOWW! Jazz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best of Jack Wilson.......2000-02-25
I've enjoyed this album for many years. It's one of the best jazz piano performances I know of. Check out Harbor Freeway. You'll never forget it. First rate!

Customer Reviews:
Howard Roberts.......2006-03-21
There are few artists that can match the style of Howard Roberts. Johnny Smith, Barney Kessel are a couple. It took me quite awhile to locate Howard Roberts information and his CDs. I was saddened to find that he passed away. That is a great loss to guitar aficionados. I am happy that I now have six Howard Roberts albums. one is vinyl from the 50s. If you love jazz guitar this is a best bet bargin that will please you. The quality and timely delivery from Amazon.com was very satisfying.
H.R. was one of the best.......2001-11-12
H.R. was one of the best guitarists. This cd is very good, it's just not his best. First, get the "Color Him Funky/Dirty Guitar Player" cd. If you have it, then this a really good cd. As far as I'm concerned, all of the H.R. cds that are out there are worth getting. I think the second half (Goodies) really gets off the ground.
