Brian Culbertson has been working more and more with live musicians on his sessions, and it adds a new depth and stronger grooves to his floating keyboard sounds on Somethin' 'Bout Love. There are terrific guest spots by saxophonists Dave Koz and Steve Cole and organist Ricky Peterson, as well as some potent bass from Walter Tisdale. R&B singer Lori Perry increases the soul quotient on her song "Get'n Over You" as well as the concluding "I'm Gonna Miss You," a moving collaboration between Perry and Culbertson. The latter vies for top honors with the two versions of "The Secret Garden," one instrumental and the other a great feature for Donnell Spencer's voice. --Adam Rains
From Jazziz
At the start of his career, keyboardist Brian Culbertson built most of his compositions alone, using computers. But for his new record, Somethin' Bout Love, Culbertson decided it was time to perform with a real band. "When I first started out, I was using mostly MIDI keyboards," he says. "But with each record, I've slowly progressed, adding more and more musicians. Now, many of the tracks are with a full live band, which I'd not done before." Some of the smooth-jazz stars to lend Culbertson a hand include saxophonists Steve Cole and Dave Koz, bassist Wayman Tisdale, drummer Ricky Lawson, and guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. "Obviously, the more live instruments used, the more human the music is," Culbertson says. "It just feels better."

The songs on this cd are magnifique. The opening title song "Something 'Bout Love" was co-written by Brian. This is a mellow composition with the emphasis on Brian's fine keyboard abilities. He plays keyboards, piano, trumpet, and trombone on this song. "Do You Really Love Me" was written by Brian and he plays keyboards and piano. "Get'n Over You" is a smooth R&B ballad written and performed by Lori Perry. She has a touch of Phyllis Hyman in her voice. There are two versions of "The Secret Garden" which was written by a collaberation of artists and originally introduced by the great Quincy Jones. Brian does these songs brilliantly in both versions as if they were made for him. Instrumentally he plays piano, keyboards, drum programming and synth bass. All of the remaining tracks are either compositons written exclusively by Brian or co-written by Brian. In most of the songs he plays multi-instruments. Accomplished guest musicians joining Brian are Paul Jackson Jr., Dave Koz, Ricky Peterson, and Michael White.
Brian Culbertson has a wonderful sense of musicianship well beyond his years. He can be mellow, funky, or soulful and very accomplished at each. As he continues to mature Brian's music has a rich depth that far surpasses expectations. Looking forward to hearing much, much more from this multi-talented musician.
