Beegie Adair - Jazz Pianist - encompasses virtually all aspects of the music business: working musician, recording artist, performer, clinician, lecturer, and radio host. She's performed with some of music's biggest names on television and radio programs, movie soundtracks, commercials, and live performances. Beegie currently resides in Franklin, Tennessee with her husband, Billy, and their three dogs.

I saw this broadcast in 1991 or 1992 and have it on video. My only regret is that the concert is not available as a DVD, because the wonder is as much in the impassioned and dramatic 'conversations' between the three stars as in the sounds they produce. Still, until then, this is unforgettable stuff.

December 8, 1991 Must Have Been Quite A Night In NYC.......2003-12-14

December 8, 1991 must have been a great night in New York City, especially at Carnegie Hall. On this evening, three outstanding performers backed by a great orchestra and two different choirs joined forces for a Christmas concert. The fruit of this effort is the recording A CARNEGIE HALL CHRISTMAS CONCERT.

When Kathleen Battle, Frederica von Stade, and Wynton Marsalis collaborate in a concert, how can it be anything but an event? This disc shows just how phenomenal event this concert must have been. Each performer had ample opportunity to demonstrate the performer's individual talents, but there are also many duets with Battle and von Stade as well as works where all three perform together. The Orchestra of St. Luke's is conducted by Andre Previn and has a sumptuous sound. The American Boychoir and the Christmas Concert Chorus add backups that enhance so many of the arrangements. Battle and Von Stade's rendition of "Gesu Bambino" is probably one of the best recordings of this beautiful carol. The "Evening Prayer" from HANSEL AND GRETEL is a highlight as well. Winton Marsalis and his septet display their talents in jazz versions of "Winter Wonderland" and "We Three Kings." There is a great Christmas medley that concludes the disc that is simply vocal and orchestral fireworks at their best.

My only critique, or pet peeve might be the better way of expressing it, would be "The Twelve Days of Christmas." This particular arrangement has the gifts in a different order than the standard version, but since this could be open to dispute, and in the spirit of the Christmas holiday, I won't consider this a strike against the album.

I'll say it again: December 8, 1991 must have been a great night in New York City, especially at Carnegie Hall.

Voices of Angels.......2003-11-21

The stars must have been aligned perfectly, all must have been right with the world on that night of December 8, 1991 in NYC's Carnegie Hall when this Christmas concert was filmed, because it is an example, one of those rare instances when everything falls into place perfectly.
On this particular night Kathleen Battle, Frederica Von Stade, Wynton Marsalis and Andre Previn performed, not only with their instruments but with their hearts as well. All the performers relate and connect to this often performed material in ways others simply do not. This is secular Holiday music performed with fervor and an emotional connection that borders on the religious.
The highlight of this recording is the 17 minute "American Songs" (I Wonder as I Wander, Who Was Mary, etc) performed primarily by Battle and Von Stade that is so exquisite as to be otherworldly.
Christmas Concerts can be corny or at worst, maudlin. But on this particular night in 1991, the angels sang and the heavens opened and called forth these artists to perform not only with their voices but with their souls as well. This is an emotional experience that is not to be missed.

Makes your heart sing!.......2003-11-18

This is a wonderful CD. The entire performance is absolutely perfect. Its the first Christmas CD we listen to every year and now my children start asking to hear it around Thanksgiving. I can't count the number of people I've given this to as a gift. We're are on our second copy!

Music to my ears.......2007-01-30

I grew up listening to this album. It was one of many albums in my father's collection. Since LP's don't exist any more, finding something to play them on can be a challenge. I was so excited to see that this classic was recently released on CD. I can now enjoy this CD for years to come. I highly recommend that you add the "Sound of Christmas" to your collection.

Tired of the same ole at Christmas? This classic will inspire you!.......2007-01-18

Of course, I grew up listening to this Ramsey Lewis collection through my open bedroom door as my parents decorated the house to make way for the magic of Christmas that was to come~so these Sounds of Christmas are intimately woven into those fondest memories of childhood. But don't take my word for it! Have a listen, and experience how in each piece Lewis wasn't just recreating old stand-bys, he was striving to make them an expression of his own experience of Christmas, and that's the thrill. I can listen to this over and over, long after the season has past, and still get excited.

Best Christmas Music ever.......2007-01-17

This is my all time favorite Christmas CD, my family could not survive the season without it. Even people who don't think of themselves as fans of jazz enjoy it.

Classic, Classy and a Must Have.......2007-01-10

Shame on you if you don't already have this album in your holiday collection. Buy it on record or buy it on CD. This is the perfect, classy backdrop for a holiday party (tried and true). By the way, Ramsey Lewis makes stellar "non-holiday" music, too, so check out "Finest Hour" which is a greatest hits collection by Lewis.

Nakagawa, an incredible flutist and great CD.......2005-10-10

This is a jazz CD, melodies are inspired by well known classical melodies, but the comparison stops there. This is dynamite for a jazz flutist to hear. Nakagawa is a monster, with tone and heart to match. Truly inspiring.

Great Jazz Christmas album!!!!.......2004-06-12

The Ramsey Lewis Trio (not ramsey as a solo artist) is my favorite jazz group, or favorite group in general. Although I love them and practically grew up with them, this album doesn't remind me of old Christmas times and memories. Why?, I have no idea, but it's sure a damn good swinging album. Although there are some duds, where the orchrestra completly drowned out the trio, there are some highlights. I'd say the best track on here is, "The Sound Of Christmas." One highlight of it is in Ramsey's solo, he adds a portion from Santa Claus is comin to town. That is the grooviest track on the album. Other great songs include WinterWonderland and practically every song on the first side. As for the second side goes, you might as well call the album The Orchrestra with special guest, The Ramsey Lewis Trio. Because they completly take over, but they do produce some great songs like What Are You Doing Christmas Eve. Here's how the second side goes. Good song, bad song, good song, bad song, and good song. Anyway this is a great album, although playing it doesn't really remind of Christmas. I have yet to by More Sounds Of Christmas buy them. Maybee it will be more nostalgic.

The BEST Christmas jazz album you will ever find. My wife used to work in a record store some years ago and happened across this gem -- it's in our CD changer now from the day after Thanksgiving on.

It just simply doesn't get any better than this, Christmas just isn't Christmas till you hear these deep feeling tunes, just set back relax and enjoy.

My favorite Christmas CD.......2003-10-31

My parents played this album over and over every year at Christmastime, and I fell in love with the music. I bought my own copy once I moved out of the house.

This album keeps your feet tapping, and some of it is danceable. It's also great for background music while decorating the tree, enjoying a late night drink on the sofa with friends, or to play during a party. My most fondest and nostalgic memories at Christmastime were of decorating the house and making cookies while listening to this album. It's a great way to get young children listening to and appreciating jazz.

One of my all time favorites. For many years playing the LP was a must when wrapping presents. The Ramsey Lewis Trio at its peak with renditions of familiar tunes that truly swing.

Gershwin CD is strangely lacking in atmosphere and reference, with over an hour of Gershwin's more classical side, including Michael Tilson Thomas conducting The Columbia Jazz Band's "Rhapsody in Blue", featuring Gershwin's original 1925 piano roll, Leonard Bernstein conducting The New York Philharmonic's "An American in Paris", and composer John Williams on guitar in "A Foggy Day". With song titles like, "Medly From The Woody Allen Film 'Manhatten", at just over three minutes, and "Medly From 'Porgy and Bess'", the CD is a classy cash cow thrown together by CBS Records. Tilson Thomas' "Three Preludes for Piano", stops and takes a dramatic musical breath in the context of these slam-bang offerings. Truly bland CD liner notes by Bobby Finn and Kay Swift, whoever they may be.

I have always loved the Gershwin music. It seems to Americana. When I first heard the recordings of the music from the piano rolls, I was fascinated. When I then heard this album with the jazz sound and the symphony sound combined with the pure sounds from the piano rolls, I was captured by the sound. The mighty ending of The Rhapsody in Blue is as powerful as this music can be. Add songs like Summertime and the Porgy N' Bess favorites and I find that this album is just the right combination of composer, performer and directors. Michael Tilson Thomas pulls forth from the group he is directing, a crisp and powerful sound. Bernstein needs no critique. If you are a lover of Gershwin and piano music, you can't miss with this.

Pianist extraordinaire Michael Dulin's long-awaited Christmas album is here, and it was well worth the wait! Making traditional music of the season sound fresh and new is a real challenge, but Dulin has done it with effortless style and the finesse he is known for. Dulin often adds keyboard embellishments to his music, but for this album, most of the tracks are solo piano. Combining his long career in classical music with jazz stylings, Dulin has created a Christmas album that is uniquely his own and that is certain to become a favorite of those who add it to their collections. All but one of the tracks are traditional sacred carols, and the one original piece is one of Dulin's most beautiful compositions to date.

The album opens with an exuberant arrangement of "Deck the Halls." Bubbling with joy, this track immediately demonstrates what an incredible pianist Dulin is (one of the best in the world to these ears!). "O Come Emmanuel" is one of my favorite carols, and Dulin's arrangement is serious and reverent without going to the pitch-black tone that many have given the song. This is truly a highlight on an incredibly good album. "Silent Night" is gentle and delicate, and you can almost see snow falling in the moonlight. "The First Noel" is sweetly simple and has some slightly jazzy touches that bring it up to date without changing the spirit of the piece - very warm and charming. "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is an easy, flowing ballad in Dulin's inimitable style that makes the song his own. "Joy to the World" picks up that pace a bit, but keeps the song delicately rejoicing. My favorite track is Dulin's original "Mary's Babe's A Sleeping." I think this quote from Dulin says it all: "It has a sweep and a sadness that seems right for the CD - sweet dreams of a baby who will bear such enormous burdens and die such a tragic death. I wanted to telescope all of that into the lullaby." Dulin's treatment of "O Come All Ye Faithful" is a gentle call to worship. "Away in A Manger" was my favorite carol as a child, and Dulin conveys the sweet innocence that I still love about the piece. "O Holy Night" is often very dramatic and powerful, but Dulin chose a more gentle approach that works elegantly. The emotions are there, but are more serene. The biggest surprise of the album is "We Three Kings," which echoes Dulin's incredible "Night Rhythms" on his "Atmospheres" album, one of my all-time favorite Dulin pieces. This is a jazz piano arrangement with keyboard accompaniment and rhythms. Although different from the rest of the album, it fits right in and supplies a bit of magic - kind of like an unexpected gift. The closing tracks is a short reprise of "O Come All Ye Faithful" played in a big classical style.

What a great Christmas album! Several years in the making, Dulin has outdone himself once again. Give yourself an early Christmas treat, and enjoy it for years to come. Very highly recommended!
