There has never been an instrument that conveyed more romance than Stan Getz's tenor saxophone, from the breathy, beautiful tone--all air and gauze--to the rapturous sweep that he could bring to a melody. It's a sound both warm and cool--able to convey everything from hesitation to keening passion. Getz could also swing hard, but this compilation puts its emphasis squarely on the ballad side, picking up highlights from his Verve recordings from 1952 to 1968, placing him in intimate small groups to orchestral settings. Getz perfectly captures the breezy warmth of a Brazilian beach in his collaborations with João and Astrud Gilberto, including "Corcovado" and "Girl from Ipanema," while there's another kind of poetry in the way he floats across the orchestra on "Moonlight in Vermont" and "Alfie." Herb Ellis's guitar frames Getz beautifully on "I'm Glad There Is You," while Getz's stunning melodic invention is highlighted in two quartet tracks with pianist Bill Evans, "But Beautiful" and "Melinda." --Stuart Broomer

In my opinion "Getz For Lovers" is nothing less than a "Magnum Opus".

So sweet and mellow!.......2002-10-15
Best for candle-lit late night when you want to create beautiful mood and have a good time with your love one.
His music doesn't really sound like it's from the 60's. It's literally timeless.
Even when you're alone, slipping in a couch and holding a book, it makes a perfect companion.
I believe the 'Getz Effect' can be a useful tool for us to relax and get our minds back to the bright and peaceful state.

gems without settings.......2006-06-30
Stan Getz music, "The Sound", the epitome of Cool, and Romantic in the true sense fo the word. Introspective. Always Lyrical and effortless. As if the sax were connected directly to his heart. A warm Balm to a world of stress, anger and dissonance. Melancholy. More than anyone else, with the possible exception or Miles Davis (before '64), Stan IS the meaning of Cool.
Most of these ballads are taken from the eighties, the final decade of his forty year career.
As wonderful as this lyrical introduction is, Getz music is rapidly disappearing from the market, and all that's left are "best of's". I hope the reader will seek out the albums from which this music is taken, which are even more marvellous. Try "Anniversary", "Blue Skies", "My Old Flame", "Serenity" to hear these classic songs in their original context.
all is good, but songs suffered somewhat when removed from original faster and slower song context, like ripping a large gem stone from it's setting and surrounding jewels.
You'll love this, and much more is available!

more from the Getz gold mine .......2006-02-23
Great, not for writing a lot of new tunes, but great for his unfailing ability of create beauty every time he played. Great for the exquisite beauty of his tone. If the first note doesn't sound good, it doesn't matter how many notes someone plays afterwards. Or how original they are. Certain other Cool artists, his peers, produced wonderful lyrical music for a time, early, and then stopped, to make music more original but much less lyrical!
Stan, perhaps more than any other artist, or Verve and the companies who hold rights to his music, could put out dozens of these best of romantic albums, because Stan always focuses on lyrical romantic perfomances with glorious tone. Tons of stuff, still on the shelves!
He was great, as he grew older, for his increasing ability to be less aloof and put more of his emotions behind his music.
I personally prefer these songs in the context of their original albums, but there are many people out there who haven't heard them, and may not any other way. If this adds beauty and love to their lives, if this points the way to Stan's other great music, it will have served it's purpose. We need positive vibes!
Three of the songs here "Reflections" and "When the Sun Comes Out" are great ballads, but rather obsure and difficult to find on original CDs.
"Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams" features Abby Lincoln's rather annoying nasal voice, that could have been left out!
Listen with someone special. (More) Nesting Music.
The technical quality of these recordings varies with their age, Stan Getz career spanned more than 40 years, (herein about 15 of those 40 years ) but it sounds as good it could, considering.
