Bob Brookmeyer and Friends is one of the greatest jazz records you've never heard. Featuring a true supergroup band of Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, Ron Carter, and a 21 year old Gary Burton, this reissue has been a long time coming. Everyone is in top form and valve-trombonist Brookmeyer contributes half the compositions. As Gary Burton's great liner notes reveal, there was quite a bit of tension on the set because of this fact. Producer Teo Macero wanted an album of only standards and Brookmeyer wanted only original compositions. They compromised and we get the best of both worlds; muscular originals like
Jive Hoot and the sound of some serious pros breathing new life into shopworn standards like
Misty. This reissue also includes 3 unreleased bonus tracks, including a vocal cameo by Tony Bennett and a composition by Brookmeyer's then-wife and future pop icon Margo Guryan.

The Raney drought breaks.......2006-11-20
Jimmy Raney was one of the best of the post-Charlie Christian generation of guitarists although, like Tal Farlow, he is unjustifiably neglected these days. Raney's solos have a subtle, lacy quality about them - which is not to say that he couldn't swing, as this welcome reissue demonstrates. Raney plays with inspiration and intensity throughout. The pinpoint accuracy of his runs is breathtaking. This disc is superior to A, the best Raney record previously reissued. The sound quality is better and Bob Brookmeyer's low register valve trombone solos are more appropriate than John Wilson's trumpet which on A clashes with Raney's less extrovert approach. Raney himself in the original liner notes describes this 1956 recording as his best to date. Hopefully this reissue will do something to make Raney better known. It is also to be hoped that the other fine session made about this time, In Three Attitudes, will once again see the light of day before too long.
Jimmy Raney is the Charlie Parker of the Guitar!.......2006-02-15
Another awesome recording by probably the finest jazz guitarist and educator. This is a wonderful reissue. Bob Brookmeyer and JR's arrangements are cool and swingin'. To all consumers of jazz guitar CD's, this is a great addition.
Also, if the owners of the 4 Xanadu recordings are reading this... PLEASE reissue all of Jimmy Raney's recordings.

so what's wrong with lyricism?.......2006-10-16
this is probably the most lyrical cd i've heard, upbeat and hummable. i can't imagine hearing too much stan getz. his opening on misty is just great. all of the musicians here are great. i love the sound of brookmeyer's trombone in this setting. a bit commercial? so what. it marks an aspect of an era. it's not a tribute to body counts or a nod toward social awareness, what it is is good, enjoyable music.
With "Friends" Like Sony..........2006-01-19
I waited years for "Bob Brookmeyer and Friends" to get reissued, and when Sony pulled all of their infamous copy-protected, virus-attracting CDs, I was nervous that I would never have a chance to hear this album. Thankfully, Sony has produced new discs without the notorious software, and I have finally been able to purchase and listen to "Friends." Well it was probably inevitable that after all the hype and drama surrounding this title, I would be in for a let down. Don't get me wrong this is a solid session. Recorded in 1964, it features the incredible lineup of Brookmeyer, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, and (then) newcomer Gary Burton. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the whole doesn't equal the sum of the parts. From the opening bars of "Jive Hoot," I could tell the emphasis here was more on a commercial sound than an experimental, modern one. Brookmeyer's arrangements and compositions surprisingly favor a more conventional and accessible approach. The playing throughout is subdued, and even Getz only simmers in a setting best suited to his style. (Come to think of it, '64 was when another Getz disappointment was made -- "Stan Getz & Bill Evans.") Of course, this approach really stymies the rhythm trio, particularly Jones who is pushed back in the mix. Even Tony Bennett, making a guest appearance on "Day Dream," one of three bonus tracks not on the original vinyl, can't save the day. Overall, this "Friend" is not tried and true, but instead a bit of the fair-weather variety.

One Night in Vermont TED ROSENTHAL / BOB BROOKMEYER
One Night in Vermont features Ted Rosenthal in a duo setting with legendary trombonist Bob Brookmeyer. The CD was recorded live in concert at Memorial Hall in Wilmington, Vermont. It features seven classics from the great American songbook. Both performers/composers, Rosenthal and Brookmeyer improvise creatively and thematically while never losing sight of the joyous swing associated with these songs.

Musical magic.......2006-07-21
Every once in a while you hear something that makes you sit up and say to yourself: What is THIS? Precisely my reaction to hearing one track from this album on Internet radio. I immediately ordered it, and after receiving the album discovered to my delight the other tracks were just as remarkable. Here are two improvisational geniuses stretching out on several classic tunes, and do the sparks fly! One of the very best jazz recordings I have encountered in recent years.
Hard to find -- but worth the search!.......2004-06-27
This is an excellent CD, featuring jazz legend Bob Brookmeyer on his valve trombone and the fine young pianist Ted Rosenthal. The duo stretches out for longer versions of seven jazz standards that will please you for more than an hour. Porter, the Gershwins, Kern, Van Heusen, Berlin and Haggart have rarely sounded better. Planet Arts may be a lesser-known label, not available in the ordinary mall music store, but you won't go wrong buying this CD by mail. It's a real find and will be a fine addition to your collection.

Long Overdue.......2007-05-12
I bought two LPs of this very tight group in the late 60s. Sadly all of them were lost over the years and although I managed to get one of them on CD I looked in vain for the other. This is very good music and the piano playing of Kellaway is delighful. The company that put together this collection is to be congratulated for resurrecting a great jazz quintet. It is a shame that because of "new" jazz and crossover music that these older recordings seem to be neglected by the major US lables. Thankfully a US company called Mosaic puts out limited editions of great jazz that is ignored by Columbia, Sony et al.
Reissued Classics........2007-02-11
I've challenged myself to write reviews of all of the CDs that I acquire. Unfortunately, I'm about six years behind, and there's little likelihood that I'll catch up. I'm also in a peculiar regressive mode vis à vis what I'm listening to. That means that I'm looking for old jazz that's been out of print for years. The recordings on this Lone Hill Jazz reissue are a great find. I have an LP called "Straight No Chaser"--obscurely issued on Mainstream (MRL320) many years ago; consequently, I had some sense of the collaboration constituted by Terry and Brookmeyer. (Other sweet recordings by Brookmeyer and Gerry Mulligan in this epoch are available through Lone Hill.) This comprehensive collection of Terry/Brookmeyer recordings from the 1961-1965 quintet days is wonderful. I keep saying, "this is a treasure" (ad nauseum), and I'll say it again. The collection is witty, collaborative jazz. It's the work of two men that love what they are doing, and it's fine stuff, indeed.
In some ways, the music is hard to categorize--it's all jazz, of course. And Brookmeyer's valve trombone is exquisite; Clark Terry's trumpet and flugelhorn work is at its peak. Keeping in mind that he was Miles Davis' mentor and model, you can hear many of that icon's antecedents without pretension or self-parody. Clark Terry does it all. As in the famous record with the Oscar Peterson trio, he moves from horn to horn with ease. On some songs Terry switches seamlessly from muted horn to open horn, from trumpet to flugelhorn at will. I'm not sure that I realized what a consummate horn player Clark Terry is until I listened to this two plus hours of playing. Terry and Brookmeyer can replicate the brass section of most big bands by themselves. The pianist on these 28 tracks is Roger Kellaway, joined by Bill Crow on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Crow and Bailey are the rhythm section in the Mulligan/Brookmeyer collaborations as well.
In any case, the best way to describe this collection is "eclectic." There are blues tunes with Terry's characteristic wail and some singing as well as various mumbling presentations of scatting. Then you have sensitive ballads, up tempo bop tunes, close harmonies and contrapuntal spectaculars. Tunes range from Monk songs to variations on them with lots of original tunes. Terry's range is simply phenomenal and he and Brookmeyer apparently loved every minute of these recordings. Many original songs by two living giants of jazz--and they're a lot of fun. If you buy this collection, you won't be sorry.
A must have........2006-11-10
Clark Terry can be a polarizing figure amongst jazz lovers, but this classic set with Bob is one everyone can agree upon. It is exciting, inventive, and true to the period. Everyone should have at least 1 Clark Terry series, and this is a must have.
enjoy the Music Blend here.......2006-02-13
this is one of those recordings where you can sit back&feel the rich textures of the Rhythm Secton&Build up.Clark Terry&Bobby Brookmeyer have really good musical chemsitry.Clark Terry is one of my favorite Players.always dug His Tone.very strong Multi Set.
one of the best little groups ever.......2006-01-25
Lane Hauck has it exactly right. Thank your lucky stars these recordings are available again. Just one thing to add - the balance of Terry's wit, Brookmeyer's intellect, and Kellaway's unpredictability give this group a remarkable three-way punch.

Live at Sandy's II.......2005-08-18
Finally, a second volume of the Brookmeyer Quartet with Jack Wilkins (guitar), Michael Moore (bass) and Joe Labarbera (drums). Released on LP as "Live at Sandy's," this 1978 set finds Brookmeyer in typical, lyrical form--the musical mind evident in the construction of the solos, story-telling as genius. The mastering is quite good, not copied from the LP. Such a balanced, quiet and fiery musical statement. First volume has been around on DC Jazz. Hope there's more!! Don't miss Brookmeyer live either; he hasn't lost a step.

Customer Reviews:
One of the most beautiful recording by Stan Getz.......2007-01-09
I ordered this CD for my father for xmas. He heard this record on LP in the sixties, now he realized that it was re-released on CD. He said that this is the Getz-Brookmeyer quintet's best record ever. Soon after this Stan moved to the well-known bossa-novas, which are also unforgettable and five stars *****!
Getz and Brookmeyer, part two.......2005-07-07
Listening to Stan Getz works, one is amazed at the number of major future talents who he hired as backup musicians, Gary Burton, Al Haig, Kenny Barron, to name a few. The only musician to turn up more future talents than Getz was Miles Davis. Despite marvellous technique, it was Stan in the spotlight, he tended to let them have a short solo and paid them musical minimum wage.
The exception was Bob Brookmeyer and his valve trombone who was so talented Getz treated him as an equal and played duets with him, at the same time, rather than giving him space for a short solo. Getz valued him so much he even told a magazine Brookmeyer had join his band. Brookmeyer objected. Getz retreated and said it was wishful thinking.
They got together on and off for years. Getz even changed mouthpieces when playing with Brookmeyer so his sax would have a similar tymbre to Brookmeyer's trombone.
I like their effort "Jazz at the Shrine". This is more complex duet play, fast, light, bebop, dry, in a similar vein to Shrine.
Real "smooth" jazz.......2002-11-02
Back then they called it "cool", but this is real jazz played smoothly. Mellow mood music with sensitive interplay between the two principal performers, backed by a fine rhythm section (pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist John Neves and drummer Roy Haynes).
