This Is The Dirty Dozen Brass Band Collection

Since their humble beginnings in 1977 the Dirty Dozen Brass band has championed the sound of lowdown horns from the streets of New Orleans to the entire world. The band’s first, long overdue, multi-label anthology takes music from ten albums and stuffs it all onto one disc, resulting in 80 minutes of the most lively sounds you’ll hear this side of Bourbon St. From spirituals ("Just a Closer Walk with Thee"), to R&B (Marvin Gaye’s "Inner City Blues"), Crescent City classics (The Meters’ "Cissy Strut"), Charlie Parker covers ("Bongo Beep") and groove-happy originals, the horn, percussion and later guitar augmented outfit keeps the funk flames fanned. Greasy and fluid sousaphone bass parts by mainstay Kirk Joseph kick up the second line dust, while the punchy five piece horn section blows with the intensity of a Crescent City hurricane, both in unison and taking solos that move from soul to jazz and back again. These fifteen songs only scratch the surface, as the band’s remarkable collaborations with Dr. John and Elvis Costello are MIA. The compilers, instead, successfully chose tracks representative of the group’s versatile jazz and roots approach. It’s nearly impossible to play this album and stay seated, and who would want to? The compilation captures the heart of New Orleans’ most passionate and well-known brass band that finds the funk regardless of which genre they decide to delve into. --Hal Horowitz

4 out of 5 stars Brass Band.......2007-05-16

This was a gift and I've not heard it, but I know it arrived on time and in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars Funk Perfection.......2006-03-18

This was my first exposure to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to hear them. Their sound is a sort of perfectly realized funk: Fun tunes, energetic arrangements, and spirited solos. References to the rich musical traditions of New Orleans are ever present and give the music a richness and a sense of history, but this band always sounds fresh and alive. I'll bet their live performances are something special.

Since I wear my Ipod when I run and work out, I need snappy tunes that hold my interest - my current playlist uses more songs from this CD than any other in my collection - I think that's a good measure of the fun you will have with it!

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch overview of their finest moments.......2005-07-19

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band have jammed with more bands than almost anyone else. Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews, Dr. John, Elvis Costello, the Black Crowes, Modest Mouse, David Bowie are just a few. The thing is, many people may not be familiar with some of the Dirty Dozen's own albums, many of which are now out-of-print. This brand new collection includes tracks from the ten albums released during the Dirty Dozen's 27-year career. The album kicks off with the classic "My Feet Can't Fail Me Now" and doesn't slow down until the closing track "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from their Funeral For A Friend album. In between you'll find some of the most inspired and infectious grooves ever committed to disc.

Everybody digs New Orleans. Why not check out the best of the best New Orleans has to offer?

5 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction!.......2005-04-18

I've got a few albums by the Dozen, but when I saw this in my local record store, I bought it on impulse. I'm sure glad I did. There are a number of early tracks I'd never heard before, and the selection from more recent albums can't be faulted. If there's any one essential Dozen album (most of them come pretty darn close), it's this one. Get it without "fail"!
