Soul Station [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This 1960 session broke the usual Blue Note quintet mold, with Mobley's tenor saxophone featured with just a rhythm section, one that happened to be the best of the era. Pianist Wynton Kelly and bassist Paul Chambers were working regularly with Mobley in Miles Davis's band, while the explosive drummer Art Blakey had worked with him in the original, cooperative form of the Jazz Messengers, and the familiarity shows. Blue Note had a reputation for producing "meat 'n' potatoes" jazz, and no musician would better fit the description than Mobley, who went about the task of making music with a workmanlike focus and a consistency that didn't attract nearly the attention it deserved. Mobley was one of the most talented saxophonists of his generation, a superbly lyrical artist who blended an inventive tunefulness with taut rhythmic attentiveness. The flowing blues of the title track is a particularly fine example of his art. And to say this session is exemplary would be an understatement. --Stuart Broomer

Amazon.com essential recording

After the success of the dance hits "Fame" and "Young Americans" (both off 1975's Young Americans), Bowie seemed to step back, ponder the future of rock, and then turn up the guitars and the art-rock sensibilities and make a completely engaging and evocative album. From the epic title track (introducing the Thin White Duke character and building into an incendiary rocker) to the irresistible "Golden Years" (another dance hit) and on to the physically wrenching and funk-drenched "Stay," the soul of David Bowie is pretty much meshed into every track. The playful "TVC15" takes the listener on a bumpy ride into unholy tech-love, and the gorgeous "Wild is the Wind" and "Word on a Wing" have Bowie stepping out of his rocker persona and into sensual crooner mode. Strong from beginning to end. --Lorry Fleming

5 out of 5 stars My Favourite Bowie Album.......2007-06-12

Hmm, Only six songs on a Bowie album. Is this a rip-off? That was my first reaction when it was released. Also when i heard the album for the first time it seemed my fears were justified. I could not understand the title song and felt it was a ten minute disjointed waste of time. I was also very shocked at the photos provided for the album. David Bowie was always thin but these photos showed him very anaemic and deathly thin. I realize he was at the height of drug addiction during this time and sometimes artists in this state can produce their best work.

For a die hard Bowie fan in the Seventies, there were too many abrupt changes in direction from Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust..., Aladdin Sane, Pin-Ups, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and now Station to Station. It would continue with Low, "Heroes", Lodger, Scary Monsters and Let's Dance. Looking back it was an amazing run of success, with each album being very different fron its predecessor. He was very definitely ahead of his time! He was superbly aided by long time associate Carlos Alomar on Guitar, along with Earl Slick. Also included was Roy Bittan on Piano (of E Street Band fame), Dennis Davis on Drums and George Murray on Bass.

After listening to all of Bowie's albums from the Seventies, this is the one album I cherish the most. I do not know why that is as all his other albums are very rewarding and some are true classics (Ziggy, Aladdin, Low). But i think that this is his most personal album, not the musings of some alter-ego but it is David Bowie speaking from the heart. It may be another persona in the form of "The Thin White Duke" but it seems more stripped down with no glam, no funk and no throwbacks to an earlier time. It was a very modern album for 1976, and was blessed with a release date just before punk and disco ruled the radio.

1. STATION TO STATION (10.08) Certainly in the 1970s this was Bowie's longest song. Basically it comprises four differnet sections; TRAIN RIDE, INSTRUMENTAL INTRO, RETURN OF THE THIN WHITE DUKE and IT'S TOO LATE. I could not understand it all at first but now i just sit back and enjoy the wonderful ten minute opus in all its glory. One of my favourite Bowie songs of all time (and this album includes four!).

2. GOLDEN YEARS (4.03) One of DB's most popular songs and deservedly so. Very catchy and done in a great doo-wap style. Sounds nothing like Jean Genie or Diamond Dogs and it shows another side of Bowie's gift for songwriting. Another favourite.

3. WORD ON A WING (6.00) Getting into a more sentimental, religious mood. It is a nice change of pace and shows he can be vulnerable and very willing to show that he is not too strong. Not many superstars did this in those days.

4. TVC15 (5.29) The one song on the album that could be a throwback to earlier times and I do not mean that in a negative sense. This is a great Bowie song, hard to make out what he is saying but it is just good old guitar/piano rock song with a very catchy chorus. Love it!

5. STAY (6.08) The opening guitar riff draws you in immediately. Oblique lyrics but there is a sense of broodng uncertainty throughout the whole song and again it shows the singer's sensitive side.

6. WILD IS THE WIND (5.58) A cover version of a song written in 1956 by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington. I have not heard the original or any other version of this song but this is arguably the most satisfying song on the whole album. It is hard for me to say why as sometimes I listen to this song and feel Bowie's vocals are a little wobbly. Other times i listen to it and I feel he nails it completely. It is a beautiful song and the lyrics are sublime. I can understand why Bowie wanted to sing it as his vocal is so emotional. You get the sense that he is so completely in love and laying himself bare that it can make you teary-eyed. From an artist who was a glam rock superstar, it is a very sobering song coming straight from the heart. Sorry for the hyperbole but I have to admit personally it is the standout track on the album.

The folowing two tracks are bonuses on the cd and not indcluded on the original LP. They are live versions of WORD ON A WING (6.10) and STAY (8.24). They are interesting but not essential. The time listed on the album for the Live verion of STAY is incorrect at 7.24

4 out of 5 stars Oldie But (Remastered) Goodie.......2007-04-13

Yet another Bowie album that sounded like nothing else being made at the time. Remarkable in that it only consists of 6 tracks, but most folks have probably forgotten how good those tracks were. Showcases Bowie's fabulous voice and operatic sense of timing.

5 out of 5 stars as wonderful as the wind.......2007-04-09

a fantastic and profound album that comes to new light with this version. It is truly a timeless work that shines in any form. Captures Bowie in his occultish-musing incarnation and of course adding brilliance to the classic "wind."

5 out of 5 stars Great effects!.......2007-01-26

The sound of the train coming through your speakers is amazing. Vocals are vintage Bowie as we know and love him. Make no mistake "Golden Years'" is just the tip of the iceberg on this great cd.

5 out of 5 stars Bowie is 'Wild is the Wind'.......2007-01-10

I bought this album in the early 80's and could not find it on CD until recently. One of Bowie's lesser known works, but certainly not one of his lesser works. 'Wild is the Wind' is the Johnny Matthis song brought to a different universe -- a little goth, very moving and highly cool. Years ago, when I first heard this song on my car radio, I had to pull off the side of the road and reflect and absorb. I still can't get over Bowie's voice on this album (album -- the word dates me, no?) and his passion for the music. Love love love this album!

5 out of 5 stars Mono? Why?.......2007-02-07

Yes, one of the definitive Hanks...and Blue Notes. But in PERFECT TAKES, the sampler CD + DVD interview of Rudy Van Gelder, the sample cut from SOUL STATION, an originally stereo recording, is in mono. None of our reviewers state SOUL STATION was mysteriously remastered in mono by Rudy; so perhaps Blue Note screwed up that cut just on PERFECT TAKES somehow, just like they forgot to include the DVD in a whole batch of PERFECT TAKES that they shipped out (buy it used and cheap from Amazon sellers, so you can ask them to check if the DVD's in there too).

I think I'll stick with my previous Blue Note issue of SOUL STATION, thank you. We all revere Rudy. But let us think with our ears, not our hearts. The fact that he remastered the RVG series is no guarantee you'll like them better than the magnificent Japanese issues, or for that matter, previous issues you may have previously purchased. Save your bread. I've been listening to these Blue Notes for over 40 years, LPs through CDs. To my ears, these RVGs sound very good, but they can't touch the Japanese CDs. As with much of the domestic Blue Note CDs since day one, the RVGs still have those here and there harsh highs that interrupt your concentration and enjoyment, and send you to fiddling with the volume and treble controls. Never happens with Japanese--the world's only real Blue Note available "upgrade."

Actually, I have a suspicion that Rudy did not actually remaster all in this series, and that the RVG series is little more than yet another Michael Cuscuna remarketing strategy (let's see, how many times has Cuscuna issued some of these titles?--there's Ultimate, 16-Bit, Gold, Connoisseur, 24-Bit, RVG) and that many of these are repackaged Connoisseur series or hitherto shelved remasters. These really do sound very much like the Connoisseur series. And if you've ever heard the RVG of A NIGHT AT BIRDLAND, Art Blakey's ride cymbal rips our ears and ruins Clifford Brown's solo on the alternate of "Wee-Dot." I have a 1983 Japanese LP reissue that blows this RVG away. It's really hard for me to believe this is remastering by the great Rudy, especially when you consider, in an 1986 interview on NPR, when asked what his regrets are, Rudy immediately answered, "Not having the technology back then to really capture Clifford Brown's trumpet sound" (wow, as great as Clifford sounds on record, we will never really hear his sound). I think Cuscuna just puts Rudy's name on a lot of these.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you buy any from the RVG series, GRAB the two Monk volumes. A digital process was applied by which just about all of the 1951 lacquer disc surface noise was eliminated, and much detail and nuance was brought out, so much so that previous issues are now terribly obsolete. The RVG Monks sound dramatically incredible by comparison.

A prediction: More and more people will get hip to and become sick and tired of Cuscuna's tactics. He will eventually manage Capitol Blue Note out of business, and all that will be available to us will be Japanese Blue Notes. And if you think they're expensive now...

5 out of 5 stars Mobley the GENIUS.......2007-01-01

These Blue Note Rudy van Gelder remasters are well worth the investment, bringing these old tunes to life now more than ever. You also can't go wrong with the lineup assisting Hank on this recording: Art Blakey (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), and Wynton Kelly (piano).

Hank's albums stand the taste test of time, and Soul Station is no exception to this stringent rule. Part of making an excellent record is selecting solid sidemen and knowing when to take a backseat, something Mobley did without apology. On track one, "Remember" (Irving Berlin), there are incredible solos by Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers complimenting Mobley blowing away on tenor sax. The consistant, laid back recording is a classic and Mobley gives each musician plenty of show-off time on these tracks. Surprisingly, this is music you can really move to. Why can't folks get together and lay down an album in a day like this without even coming close to the quality? It boggles the mind.

This album is a must have for those looking to upgrade to the RVG remaster or who are looking to purchase a copy for their first time. Well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!.......2006-11-10

This is simply one of the Greatest Jazz Records of All Time! Nothing more need be said. Get it!!! get 2 copies...3 copies...give it as a Gift at Holiday Time....

4 out of 5 stars doesn't get much better than this.......2006-11-01

i seldom play this cd, yet whenever i do i'm reminded again of how very good this recording is. bluesy, some bop, straight up jazz tenor sax at its best. while i'm listening to hank mobley here i want to keep listening to his playing. a big clear tenor sound in no hurry, free of theory, or testing the limits of the sax, or breaking new ground, or looking for a new sound. jazz at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars A jazz masterpiece.......2006-09-18

This is Mobley's finest moment, in a career of mixed success. Always overshadowed by his more assertive contemporaries, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, Mobley had subtle skills not always appreciated by the casual listener. But, as other reviewer have noted, this album benefits from Art Blakey's driving and insistent drumming, and with no other horn to rely on, Mobley is forced to rise to Blakey's challenge, and he does so with great aplomb and inventiveness. Four originals and two "standards" executed beautifully to supply thirty-seven minutes of sublime jazz that stands among the fifty best albums in jazz history.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Larry Graham and Graham Central Station, Vol. 1.......2007-02-22

I brought this for my husband because we own an older model vehicle with a cassette player and he enjoys listening to the cassette.

5 out of 5 stars Funk Pioneers.......2006-01-13

From his days with Sly and the Family Stone, Larry Graham has been the consumate funkster! On his greatest hits, you get the whole spectrum... from "The Jam", which has one of the greatest funk bass hooks of all time, to "One in A Million You" which is balladeering at its best.

When it was originally released, "We've Been Waiting" seemed to be the musical segue for every R&B station in America.

Although the group in its original incarnation was short lived, it left an indelible mark on 70's funk. This album is a good momento. Enjoy!

"Some people listen to remember, some people listen to forget".

5 out of 5 stars The Jam.......2005-10-07

Nothing other than these two words are necessary to describe the funkafied brilliance of Larry Graham.

It's kind of hard to rate a greatest hits collection on a 5 star scale, because in many ways, you're rating the artist's career at this point.

In any case if you're short in the tooth, Mr. Graham was the bassist in Sly and the Family Stone's groundbreaking soul/funk/rock band that redefined the course of modern music - belee dat! He's widely credited with the invention of the slap bass style of bass playing and he milks it to perfection on The Jam.

I didn't live through the Graham years and I try not to hold such cheesy ballads as One in a Million You against the man (brotha's gotta get paid now and then), so I really couldn't rate him overall as a 5-Star artist.

However, 5 stars it is for The Jam that takes us through funkier and funkiest solos from each member of the band to a sizzling climax that has the whole organism grooving off each other by the time your 8 minutes is up.

"Let me Play my Wums..." Check this out, dude.

3 out of 5 stars Very Good If You Don't Mind EDITED Versions........2005-06-16

The music of course is outstanding as you would expect from Larry Graham. I was highly disappointed in the fact that this disk contained many edited (short)versions of songs. This would have gotten 5-stars otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Player.......2005-04-09

Larry Graham is one of the best bass players ever and my personal favorite. It is so evident when he left Sly to form his own group. Although I am a HUGE Sly fan as well, Larry Graham's bass was the heartbeat of the group and he used it to bring life to his own, Graham Central Station. GCS played some the the funkiest music, it's hard not to move when you're listening..."Release yourself" does just that...blows you out of your seat. Although this albumn contains some of his best cuts, it omits a lot of the goodies, but is good to have none the less. I have all his albumns (I'm dated) but wanted them on cd. Todays "music" if that's what you call it is sorely lacking. Talkin bout missin the "good ol days"......

4 out of 5 stars The IZM... brings the wisdom..........2006-06-06

Madizm was the cut to get my mouth wattery. Once this LP dropped, my hunger pains were filled. True, the best track was the 1st single, but almost every track on this album would grow on you and leave you in need of a neck brace. This was their best work, probably due to the blastmaster on their side... dope nonetheless and one of my fav LPs.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever!.......2006-05-02

This disc turned me into a hardcore hip-hop head. These cats can spit some darts that would make mentor KRS-ONE proud. The beats are grimey and on point, and the rhymes are dope. This is a true underground classic, and for those interested in some ruff neck mid 90's hip-hop - this is for you. 11 years later and this CD still sounds better than all of the pop-hop out there now. Pick this up, you wont be sorry.

The duo of Hakim and Tuffy, considered proteges of KRS-One release their debut album Station Identification(perfectly titled after the group's name). Naturally, the highlight of the album was the debut single "Mad Izm" sparked with a neck-snapping beat to fit the over 4 minute verbal assault discussing the ghetto's favorite pasttime. There are several other notables on this album including "Reprogram" featuring KRS-One(he shows up on several other tracks also), "Sex For The Sport" and "Down Goes The Devil". Production handled mostly by Salaam Remi among others. Channel Live's debut definitely shouldnt be overlooked and "Mad Izm" was a spring classic in 1994.

4 out of 5 stars Some timeless funk tracks.......2007-04-22

Larry Graham, the first man to bring thumping and plucking of the bass into the forefront back in the 70s. I've seen him perform with Prince a few years back and the man's still got it!
Larry Graham is responsible for converting Prince into a Jehovah Witness.
As a big fan of the bass, this was a must have for me.
I can't tolerate the song "One In A Million" though. Even though it's considered a gem among the R&B crowd in the music industry, I think that song is one of the most terrible and sappiest songs I have ever heard.
Everything Larry has done sounds very funky and soulful except for One In A Million...it's just plain bad, and I don't understand why it's even recognized at all. It definitely makes me think Larry should just stick with playing bass.
Overall, this anthology is cool and funky. But I always skip over One and a Million.

5 out of 5 stars Just As Essential To The Evolution Of The Funk As James, Sly or The P-Funk Thang!! .......2006-11-27

After the dissolution of Sly & The Family Stone due
to Sly's increasing levitation towards self-destructive
substance abuse which killed his brilliant creativity
earlier than it should've...
It stood to a handful of artists and musicians who were
influenced by what that megalithic band had started in
their hey-day, to carry on the banner of the FUNK
into the 70's and 80's!!

The Ohio Players, Mandrill, Tower of Power, Cameo, etc.
all had their own recipes, Earth, Wind & Fire had their
own refined eclectic pop-freindly version,
The Isley Brothers had theirs, Parliament / Funkadelic
and Bootsy's Rubberband carried the funk banner high and proud,
and then of course there was that genius kid out of
Minneapolis named Prince that took it well into the 80's!

But right up there with all of those names, and from the
actual source of the early funk meteorite was one of
the most influential bassists of all time....
Larry Graham, whose percussive and funky bass style
(thumpin'-slappin'-pluckin') was one of the main ingredients
to Sly's catchy lyrics, harmonic hooks and rhythmic flights
of the imagination!
Larry took it upon himself to form one of the baddest,
most influential and most underated bands of the 70's...
"Graham Central Station!!"
Their music was just as infectious as Sly's but with an even deeper
funk edge, which probably kept them from reaching the pop audience
that Sly had, but trust me...black folks was feelin' 'em big time!
They used to put on a hell of live show as well!
The best of all their albums from 1973-1980 is on here
and in addition to Larry's innovative bass playing you also
hear early forays into electronic instrumentation with the use
of the "funk box", an early drum machine, as well as synthesizers
and moog bass around the same time as people like Stevie Wonder,
P-Funk and others were introducing them to black music.
The grooves are infectious, the ballads lush,
the overall feeling joyous!
I am so glad that Warner Brothers decided to re-release their
catalogue and this strident compilation that captures the esscence
of what GCS was all about!--Buy It & Let The Funk Take You Higher!!

4 out of 5 stars in responce to Sherance.......2006-02-20

After reading Sherance M. Brothers "smbrothers24" reveiew i just had to say as
a major P-FUNK fan bootsy collins is just as good a performer
but nowere nere as good a bass player
im not her to beat you up we are booth big fans i can tell
so ill go on.

He is credited with the invention of the slapping
technique, which radically
change the way the bass would be played.

Larry Graham pioneered the art of slap-POP
So-called "Machine-gun bass" (just ask marcus miller,
Flea, Stanley Clarke, John Norwood Fisher, P-Nut,)

and please guys ( Reviewer:Karl Miller "kemspeaks ) never discount his vocals,
people are still talking about his octave range
(witch i think is 5 i may be wrong)
Lou Rawls, has a four octave range.

a very good CD
and two of the best Reviews came from

5 out of 5 stars Deep-groove funk-in-your-face rock.......2006-01-16

Larry Graham is one of the greatest artists of all time! Every album GCS ever released has had at least one major hit song on it. This set does a GREAT job compiling the best songs his band ever released, including one of the best hard rock cuts ever, "Earthquake", and his funk rock opus, "The Jam". Not only does this 2 cd set define GCS, but it also defines an undescribable era of music!

5 out of 5 stars Full of funk.......2004-11-03

Larry Graham is quite impressive. Though, better known for his heavy funk bass playing, he's actually quite a versatile artist. He can do heavy funk, or sweet love songs and anything in between. This anthology shows the talent and the greatness of Larry Graham. He's also got a great voice. I recommend this anthology to any serious funk fan, it rocks! Oh and I should mention that it has excellent linear notes!

    5 out of 5 stars Head Music.......2004-09-04

If you grew up in the 70's, you know what head music is. This is it! This was my introduction to David Bowie and it remains my favorite Bowie album, almost 30 years later. Many tracks are overlooked in favor of the song that was overplayed on FM Radio, Golden Years. Even for myself, it was many years before I truly appreciated "Word on a Wing" and "Wild Is the Wind." My 3 initial favorites were Station to Stataion, TVC 15 and Stay. They remain the backbone of the album. If you haven't heard it yet, buy it. And then put on your headphones and zone out for a while. You wont regret it. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A GEM!.......1999-09-03

Wow. Bowie never ceases to amaze. This album is dark and moody. And if you don't find yourself listening to this CD twice then you must be nuts!

5 out of 5 stars Can You Handle This?.......2006-11-11

After all the quarrelling and bickering between Graham and his predecessor
Sly Stone, this was the initial release of the group that Graham originally was just going to produce.
You hear Sly's influence, but you can hear GCS start a legacy of their own.
Kicking off with the acapella fun of We've been waiting, this
borrows from Frederick Knight's "I've been lonely for so long." Then you find out immediately that this band is going straight to the all out high energy sect with the Tower of Power horns, driving keyboards and the vocal range of LG. It ain't no fun to me is the first example of the great arrangements by GCS. The funk permeates throughout with the tunes People, Hair and its social political ramifications and the groups first hit, Can You handle it. Lenny Williams is featured on Tell me what it is. Fun soul for your funky bone.

5 out of 5 stars Graham Central Station.......2006-03-01

I was so excited to receive Graham Central Station. I am happy that some one was smart enough to issue the original album on cd instead of greatest hits. I love B sides. This cd brought back a lot of memories.

    5 out of 5 stars Everlasitng funk value...I know.......2005-11-18

    WOW

I am ripping songs into my iPod and got to the G's. My big sis introduced me to this album waaaaay back in 1976. We were Sly fans and of course we dug Larry. I still listen to this often. I am one to "keepsake". One of those keepsakes was the pricetag on the CD I am ripping. Anyone who lives in Austin TX knows Waterloo Records. "If they didn't have it they would order it". Well I ordered it alright in early 90s...to the tune of $26.99 American (still have the price tag on it!). Funny to see it listed for 9 and change now! Still...no regrets...cause I was FUNKIFIED way back. If you enjoy funk ('aDelic...Bro Johnson...Sly...etc...GET THIS NOW!) And check out the orig "It Ain't No Fun To Me" Al Green off of "Let's Stay Together". Community is a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars here comes the funk.......2005-10-22

This is such a great CD to actually buy, not just download a few tracks. All the songs flow and go together. I love love love the song "why?". That girl can sing! I love to sing with it. Check it out. "Hair" is fun to sing with too. Here comes the funk.

5 out of 5 stars Larry Graham still doin' his thang.......2005-08-27

I was shocked when I found out that Larry Graham wasn't with the Family Stone anymore. But even on his own he did his thang. My dad burned this album for me. I loved it. The song Ain't No Fun To Me makes a lot of sense if you hear it. And Hair is my favorite because it's the same saying as don't judge a book by it's cover. And the song is saying it's not right to judge somebody by their hair. The Jam introduces everybody. Even Larry wrote songs about society like Sly. You can't go wrong with buying this album. And if you're a fan of Sly and the Family Stone then I recommend Graham Central Station. This is a really good group and album.
