POOR EXCUSE FOR A RELEASE OF THIS TOUR.......2007-07-20

I mean, c'mon. The Stones and fans talk about how important the 1969 tour was, new guitar player, new live sound, new quiet audience. They were right, sure. But the 1989-90 tour was far more important. They basically got up and played song after song they never played before or at least not in many years. They never sounded that good live. They never stayed in tune thru the whole show before. Sympathy/Devil with the piano and congas just like the studio version. Where's all the songs from these shows???? Where's Undercover, 2000 Light Years From Home, Salt of the Earth? At least they included Factory Girl, good move. I'm glad I taped the Atlantic City show off the air. Much better than this.....

enjoyable document of the Stones circa 1990.......2006-10-09

This 1991 album is a bit of hodgepodge: 15 live tracks recorded in 1989 and 1990, plus two somewhat random studio tracks. It filled in a rather long hiatus in the Stones' recording career, being their only album during the five years between "Steel Wheels" and "Voodoo Lounge", and it is also the first of three live albums they put out during the decade.

Their late-1980s shows were huge spectacles, but the music is loose and unpretentious. Most of the time, the five Stones perform with only a handful of side peformers. Mick is in fine voice, but he sounds a little bored at times.

About half of the live tunes are from the Stones' 1980s albums, the others are oldies from the early days. The highlights of the album are the inventive yet unpretentious acoustic versions of the golden oldie "Ruby Tuesday" and the relatively obscure "Beggars Banquet" track "Factory Girl." Surprisingly, no songs from "Exile on Main Street" made it onto the album.

This is the last Stones album with Bill Wyman as a member of the band.

So Good it Boggles the Imagination.......2006-06-11

How can I say enough about this record. The live version of "Start Me Up" is to kill for. "Sad, Sad, Sad," is just so cool. "Miss You," not one of my favorite Stones songs, is done so well here that I've changed my opinion about it. Then there is "Ruby Tuesday," "Factory Girl" and "Paint it Black," songs that the Greatest Group on Earth managed to make even better then they were on those earlier studio albums. Hard to believe it could be done, but this is the Greatest Group on Earth, after all. The two studio tracks, "Highwire," the band's view of the Gulf War (the first one) and "Sex Drive" are simply stunning. How does this band do it, keep churning out masterpiece after masterpiece. It boggles the imagination.

I remember seeing them at Shea Stadium and being surprised when Eric Clapton came on stage to play on Little Red Rooster, ah...the good old days! At the time of this release (1991) I don't think most people realized just how great the Rolling Stones sounded on this album. I always thought they sounded very commercial here and when I recently played it again, I rediscovered just how right I was. With 15 years now passing, I find that "Highwire" also stands the test of time pretty well. Back in 1991 I thought it was just good, but playing it now I realize this should have been a bigger hit. Yes, it's very commercial and not as classic sounding as what they would write in later years with Love Is Strong and Anyone Seen My Baby, but it's actually become one of my favorite Stones tracks again.

I think the most important info I can offer to anyone reading this review is to go and find the European Maxi CD Single for "HIGHWIRE" (1991 release). There are a few different versions but find the one which has these four tracks: Highwire (full length version), Highwire (7" version) I Just Want to Make Love To You (live) and Play With Fire (live).

Quite simply, this live version of Play With Fire is the reason to find this CD single and worth every penny. I couldn't believe this was left off Flashpoint. This track in my humble opinion is the *best* version of Play With Fire I have ever heard - it's the instrumentation here that is amazing and it's probably the smoothest version of the song available on CD! Whenever I play any Flashpoint material - THIS is the song I listen to the most!

If you have Flashpoint and agree with me that most of the songs here are some of the best live Stones tracks you've ever heard - you MUST add this live version of Play With Fire to your collection - it is THAT GOOD....a real gem!

I don't agree that Dave Liebman dominates this session. Mind you, he's a living legend and he always plays well, but AYDIN ESEN is extremely dangerous! AYDIN has his own unique harmonic vocabulary and an amazing technical command with which to bring it to us. It's a real treat to hear these four great talents together on one record. While I gave it five stars, I do have one small complaint. Just once, I'd like to hear Anthony Jackson take an extended solo. Bottom line:If you love modern jazz and fusion, but feel like you have heard it all before, this disc should wake you up very nicely! -E.R. Troy,NY

Flashpoint.......2005-10-02

Excellent fusion / jazz / instumental adventure with some of the best players in the genre! I am a semi-professional bassist, so I mainly got this as a fan of Anthony Jackson, and he does not disappoint, being the consummate pro that he is. Being in the rhythm section I also appreciate a good drummer, and Steve Smith is one of my favorites, and he showcases his talents exceptionally well also. I was not familiar with keyboardist Aydin Esen and saxophonist Dave Liebman, but they are top New York session pros and it shows, sonically painting distinctive soundscapes with amazing technical ability. The recording and mixing are impeccable, with every instrument clearly heard and complimenting each other perfectly.
Many of the tracks are somewhat dark, brooding or moody, sometimes springing into a lighter, celebratory mood, but always intriguing musically. The songs reminded me of my last visit to New York on a cool, grey late October weekend, but with the lively, captivating energy that is New York.
With frequent time changes, unique soundscapes, and adventurous solos from all the musicians, there is always something to intrigue the ear of fusion and jazz fans. If you like busy instrumental music that still delivers interesting feel and displays virtuosic playing, you will enjoy this. I give 4 stars rather than 5 only because occaisionally the busy instrumentation can get a little tedious, but if you want lessons on how to excel at your instrument or just love adventurous jazz, this is one to have!

The great fusion revival . . ........2005-08-26

OK, lately we've had Return by Bill Connors, one of the best fusion discs ever made; Mysterious Voyages, the magical Weather Report tribute disc; Dennis Chambers' Outbreak; Dave Fiuczynski's Kif; plus great stuff by the Charlie Hunter Trio, as well as his many side projects, e.g., Groundtruther, Garage a Trois, and Hunter/Previte; Critters Buggin'; Fareed Haque's Garaj Mahal discs and Cosmic Hug; Derek Trucks' Soul Serenade; and not to forget the transcendent Little Worlds by Bela Fleck.

What on earth do all these discs have in common, I'm sure you're asking yourself. Me, I think they're more jazz-rooted than their fusion forebears. And that's what makes this fusion renaissance seem like it's gonna stick this time around.

Take the disc under review. It's difficult to deny that Dave Liebman, the guy with the foremost jazz chops in the group, dominates, just as Wayne Shorter always dominated Weather Report whenever he wasn't relegated to the background: Liebman wrote the most (and best) songs (four, tied with Aydin Esen, another huge jazz presence); he plays the best solos (note especially his work on soprano on "The Gentle Warrior," his tribute to the late Bob Berg); and his playing vaults this session out of somewhat generic fusion territory into the stratosphere.

Make no mistake, the other players (Steve Smith, drums, ghatam, and udu; Aydin Esen, keyboards; and Anthony Lake, contrabass guitar) also play their butts off, especially Esen, who manages to whip off engaging acoustic piano solos with one hand while managing tasty synth stylings with the other. But it's Liebman who always imprints an indelible jazz sensibility that stamps this group as special. His soprano playing especially marks him as one of the premier practitioners of that difficult instrument, right up there with the late Steve Lacy and Wayne Shorter. And he's no slouch on tenor, either, sounding somewhere between Michael Brecker and Joe Lovano. His tenor solo on "Yildiz" burns with white-hot intensity.

All in all, a great effort by some killer players in which the whole, surprisingly--because this seldom happens in these superstar sessions--greatly exceeds the sum of the parts.

OK, this is a faux-leather packaging of the live cd "Flashpoint" with an additional "collectible" cd. First things first, "Flashpoint" is the very last performance by Bill Wyman (totally, completely, absolutely irreplaceable - although his "replacement," Darryl Jones seems to have actually "focused" the Stones. Not the same as with Bill, but a quite different band, and not at all bad, either). OK, the "collectibles:" they are 1) "Rock and a Hard Place II," a discofied version of that song; 2) "Miss You IV," another discofied song, the very song which, far as I'm concerned, robbed the Stones of ALL credibility thereafter; 3) "Cook Cook Blues," a......uh...."B Side" to "Rock and a Hard Place"; 4) "Everything Is Turning To Gold," the ABSOLUTE TREASURE of this set, along with #7 "Fancy Man Blues," below; 5) another discofied "tune," "Winning Ugly," which (I'm really, really ashamed to admit this) I actually...like; 6) a live version of "Beast Of Burden," and my question, why wasn't ths boring song included on the "StillBorne"...I'm sorry, on the 1981 live album "Still Life?"; 7) "Fancy Man Blues," originally the "b side" of "Mixed Emotions." This song, despite the absence of Ian Stewart, could have easily appeared on "Exile On Main St," the ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT; 8) a discofiied "Harlem Shuffle VI"; 9) "Wish I'd Never Meet You," a boooooooooooring "b side" of "Terrifying"; and 10) a discofied "Mixed Emotions IV." There it is, folks. "Everything Is Turning To Gold" and "Fancy Man Blues" are true, undiscovered gems. The rest, save "Beast" are...disco. Buy the ticket, take the ride, folks...

A Good Score, but not among their best........2007-06-15

This soundtrack is very average IMO. There are a few good songs but apparently also a few filler tracks. The best songs would be "Going West", "Plane Ride", "Mystery Tracks" & "Lost in the Dunes". Those songs makes this album worth buying if you are fanatic about Tangerine Dream.

The rest of the tracks are a bit odd if I should call it that way. It's definetely not the kind of TD tracks you sit down and listen too and think "Hey, this song is actually great".

There are too many forgettable tracks that doesn't appeal to my ears and makes me not want to listen to this album too many times when I see it in my collection. But if you are serious about collecting TD's soundtracks then I must say it's well worth picking up at any price (just for the few good songs there are) as it's getting very hard to get your hands on a copy in good condition these days.

A good score, but not among their best! Try before buy!

Tangerine Dream.......2006-10-06

Bedford is one of the most beautiful communities close enough to New York City (certainly not Boston) and yet is predominantly full of horse farms and hilly properties. I actually know this "Jeremy Boe" and know he has seen movies, including "Sorcerer", which has a fantastic TD soundtrack. At one point, we thought we were the only ones who had seen it. I suggest that you watch this film and recommend that you fly to South America and get one of those cool devil trucks and fall off the cliff back into your oblivion.

I am not sure who this character "Jeremy Boe" thinks he is. Has he ever heard TD's music? Has he ever actually seen the movie Flashpoint? Or any movie for that matter? Where is Bedford NY for goodness sakes? Must be under a rock somewhere in the middle of the desert that he describes.

Essential TD. Quintessential TD........2002-12-31

I stumbled onto the review section here for the first time while ordering my fourth copy of this CD (my wife and I destroy any CD that we actually play). I heard this soundtrack in a Nebraska record store in 1984 when the newly-formed HBO Pictures was trying to promo a tremendously unsuccessful movie debut. The impulse-purchase cassette introduced me to both the film and to TD. The film, an ambient mystery/suspense flick starring Treat Williams and Kris Kristofferson, is a must-see for TD fans and for conspiracy buffs, and its desert scenery formed a marvelous backdrop for the TD tunes. I won't bother telling anyone reading a TD review on this website about TD's music in general.

This soundtrack is similar to a number of TD pieces I like from the mid-70s to the mid-80s: Hyperborea, Exit, Risky Business Soundtrack, Thief Soundtrack, et al. It postdates a lot of the drifting psychedelia that some hardcore TD fans may consider the real deal, but that's a little inaccessible for people like me who just stumbled into the genre. It definitely predates the band's slide into elevator music later in the same decade. (There are probably those who differ with that assessment too, and for those people I've got copies of Canyon Dreams, Private Music of TD, etc. which are theirs for the shipping.) The tracks are short by TD album standards - 3-4 minutes - and package TD ambience into pop-sized structures.

I strongly recommend the soundtrack for anyone who enjoyed the albums listed above.

Flashpoint has the emotion part down in their music. The songs are pretty heart-wrenching. "Faith" and "Redemption" are superb songs, while "Shallow" drops off the pattern in a more mellow fashion. "Militant" and "She" pick back up and "Monday" holds you in place. "Angelic" is kind of mellow again, but "Anything" picks up in a punk/emo style. "Mercy" and "Demon" finish off the album but not very strong. All in all, I thought it was an enjoyable experience. At times you get bored because they didnt really set up their moods well. I recommend this cd if you have an open mind towards music and if you dont need something to be totally unique. Enjoy.

Phenomenal.......1999-09-21

This new band has tremendous energy on and off stage. We saw them on the road with Ozzfest. Their presence on second stage was awesome. I predict great things will happen for this group. Their original song lyrics are taken from life experiences and tell a story of joy, hardship, heartbreak and relationships. If you like metal this is the CD to buy!

Saw this group at Ozzfest in Milwaukee (Alpine Valley). They sounded great, especially Kyle the drummer. Bought the CD and played it for my friends. They dig it too. Hope to hear more from this up and coming group.

I saw this band at Ozzfest, while they were real heavy, there songs were boring and lacked structure. Maybe in 5 years they'll improve. Oh, if you go to Ozzfest this year definetely check out Pushmonkey, they rule.

So Good it Boggles the Imagination.......2006-06-11

How can I say enough about this record. The live version of "Start Me Up" is to kill for. "Sad, Sad, Sad," is just so cool. "Miss You," not one of my favorite Stones songs, is done so well here that I've changed my opinion about it. Then there is "Ruby Tuesday," "Factory Girl" and "Paint it Black," songs that the Greatest Group on Earth managed to make even better then they were on those earlier studio albums. Hard to believe it could be done, but this is the Greatest Group on Earth, after all. The two studio tracks, "Highwire," the band's view of the Gulf War (the first one) and "Sex Drive" are simply stunning. How does this band do it, keep churning out masterpiece after masterpiece. It boggles the imagination.
