This CD compiles several Coleman Hawkins sessions recorded between 1939 and 1956, capturing the masterful tenor saxophonist at the height of the swing era, in the midst of the bop revolution, and at the helm of large orchestras. While the quality of his accompaniments varies tremendously, Hawkins's contributions don't. The earliest session climaxes with his classic solo version of "Body and Soul," a landmark in both the harmonic language of jazz and improvised musical architecture. Another four tracks come from a 1940 octet date with some of Hawkins's old associates from the Fletcher Henderson band, Benny Carter (on trumpet here) and J.C. Higginbotham on trombone, along with the underrated clarinetist Danny Polo. It's small-group swing of the first order, with touches of traditional jazz in the improvised ensembles.
Tadd Dameron wrote the arrangements for a 1947 band that includes trumpeter Fats Navarro, trombonist J.J. Johnson, pianist Hank Jones, and drummer Max Roach. While the horns all solo fluently on Dameron's "Half Step Down, Please," it's the three ballad features for the leader that stand out, Hawkins drawing inspiration from Dameron's moodily dense harmonies. The settings are pedestrian at best for a series of 1956 recordings, with Billy Byers and Manny Albam writing arrangements. Hawkins bristles with individuality, whether soaring over a substantial big band on "The Bean Stalks Again," cutting a new path through a cluttered "Body and Soul," or counterposing his ruggedly magisterial horn to still fussier arrangements of "I Love Paris" and "Under Paris Skies." --Stuart Broomer

These days, it seems anyone can make an R&B album. However, recording a soul album takes that special intangible element. The 17-year-old Devon, England, native first proved that she has it with The Soul Sessions, a collection of rare soul grooves. She does it here again with Mind, Body & Soul, her first album of original material. For those who thought that Stone could only interpret vintage ballads, witness the midtempo attitude of "Jet Lag." Backed by a thumping backbeat, Stone tells of a love of so all-encompassing that it is physically draining. On lead single, "You Had Me," Stone takes the persona of a woman done wrong with biting edge and a funky wah-wah guitar introduces her "get lost" sentiment over an infectious hook. Mind, Body & Soul also features a host of moving ballads that are reminiscent of the more downtempo fare characteristic of The Soul Sessions. The choir-backed "Security" is an organ-touched tale of love and support in the wake of tragedy. "Spoiled," a song Stone wrote with the legendary Lamont and Beau Dozier of Dozier-Holland-Dozier, is a romantically lush offering in which Stone's alto caresses the piano-driven arrangement. Other Mind, Body & Soul highlights include the hypnotic "Snakes & Ladders" and the roots reggae vibe of "Less Is More." While The Soul Sessions introduced Stone to the world, this album will make her placement in the soul canon undeniable. --Rashaun HallAmazon.com

When I heard Killing Time, I thought for sure it was a remake because it sounded like such a classic song. THen I looked it up and saw that Joss wrote it, AMAZING!
Premium quality white chocolate.......2007-06-01
'Mind, Body and Soul' is a bit of a paradox. It is raw, yet perfect: its youthful rawness itself is very charming. What I ask of listeners is to give it time. The songs are generally very simple, a throwback to the days when music (and life) was simpler and more sincere. Because some of these songs lack a catchy hook and seem so simple, you might not like them at first listen. But have a bit of that patience that music fans used to have, and you might find that the simplicity is accompanied by great sincerity and feeling. It is such a refreshing change in the 21st century to hear music that is simply good and heartfelt, with no stunts.
The songs that most people will like quickly are 'Right to be Wrong' (fabulous musicianship and lyrics), 'Spoiled' (richly sentimental and lush), and 'Jet Lag' (fun). But after about 5-7 patient listens, you might find that every song has the capacity to charm you and connect you with this young genius. The songs that grew most on me were 'Security' (beautifully sincere, stirring, pretty in its idealism) , 'Young at Heart' (youthful idealism and defiance), 'Snakes and Ladders' (energetically soulful), 'Understand' (very relaxed and really fun), 'Don't Know How' (classic-sounding) and 'Sleep like a Child' (tender night song).
The icing on the cake comes with the hidden track at the end. Joss unleashes her angsty side with an intensity and depth of feeling that are astounding for a fun-loving 17-year old.
Not since Vonda Shepard have I liked a white soul singer this much. Joss Stone is phenomenal for a 17-year old and is that rare kind of singer who can really move people deeply even though her vocal technique is still quite far from perfect. She makes up for it by singing straight from her amazing soul.
[...]Your thoughts and comments are most welcome.
More of a good thing.......2007-05-31
Right to Be Wrong, Spoiled, Jet Lag, and Snakes and Ladders are just some of the highlights of this great album. The mix of songs shows her skill with dance tunes as well as slow jams.
There is absolutely no sophomore jinx here. If you really like soul, just listen to a couple of track samples and you will be hooked!
Stone's Continuation Toward Greatness.......2007-04-20
I think the answer is a resounding yes. This CD demonstrates that "The Soul Sessions" weren't a fluke and that Joss Stone sounds just as good singing today's soul as she does singing yesterday's soul. She has a voice that shames vocalists with twenty or thirty more years of living than she has, and she seems to do it effortlessly.
"Right To Be Wrong," "Jet Lag," "Don't Cha Wanna Ride," and the other songs on "Mind, Body, and Soul" just prove that Joss Stone has a wonderful career ahead of her.

Given their origins, both geographically (San Francisco) and stylistically (founder Joe McDonald and lead guitarist Barry Melton first hooked up in a jug band), it wasn't surprising that the ragtag Fish sounded like an acid-soaked, plugged-in folk band when they debuted in '67. Simultaneously the most political and funniest of all the Northern California bands, the Fish's yippie-hippie philosophy was reflected in songs like "Superbird" (about Lyndon Johnson), "Flying High" (about getting you-know-what), and the bluesy free love saga, "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine." That they could periodically wax serious as well (the wide-angled instrumental "Section Forty Three" and the moody "Bass Strings") only added more bite to their satiric pungency. --Billy AltmanCustomer Reviews:

A Masterpiece.......2006-03-29
I remember seeing this album in the record stores and always wanted to get it but just never did. I ended up getting Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die instead. Now that album is fantastic... but we are talking about this one.
Some 30 odd years later, I finally get a copy of the CD. Wow! The tunes are mostly blues based and Barry and David have incredible guitar chops. I particularly like their minor key runs and the fuzz guitar. This group of guys had some real chemistry and I don't know about the third album, but this one and the Fixin' album are just incredible. Favorites are Death Sound, Flying High, just to name a few. Death Sound is how psychedelic blues should be played! When I think back on it, I can hear a lot of Barry Melton and David Cohen influence in my guitar playing.
Highly recommended.
Waiting for the remaster.......2006-03-11
As a side note, I melted a hole in my first copy while trying to read the song titles on the album by the light of a lit stick of incense as the record was spinning around on the turntable.
Ahhhh, those were the days...........
Psychedelia's greatest moment was a miraculous fluke.......2004-11-16
From CJ FISH ON SATURDAY NIGHT [1968] by Richard Goldstein: "I asked him why his music had changed. He straightened up slowly and took off his hat. 'See, we're not what we thought we were.'/'How so?'/'Well, 2 years ago, we believed in music like a god. If you're gonna get into a heavy acid trip, you're gonna get religious. If you stop taking acid, you stop being religious.'/'Our audience knew we got stoned and we knew they got stoned and it all worked in a big circle', Barry added./'Yeah, but music's nothing to believe in. I mean, it's just sound.'/'Do you feel like quitting now?'/'No, I still dig playing. If it got really bad, I couldn't even get up on the stage. But today, the only emotion I associate with music is pleasure. There used to be all kinds of...well...connotations.'"
A lot of people use music to drown out the silence of God. I wish they'd realize that the silence of God is merely the space between the notes. As you can hear in this record's last track: GRACE. My favorite moment in GRACE is Joe's descending delivery of the phrase "every day colored gold". No--wait. I take that back. My favorite moment comes after that. When either Melton or Cohen (I can't remember which) plucks those 4 perfect eerie notes that accompany the phrase "gold our love".
Melton & Cohen are also responsible for my fave passage on the entire record. The guitar section in THE MASKED MARAUDER. Specifically, the churning first part of it. It's a lysergic shade of melancholia.
Profound sadness is also present in the final section of SECTION 43. You hear a hard-to-identify instrumental timbre that sounds like a faint radio signal from outer space. The signal strengthens and it turns out to be Joe's harmonica.

Cyndi Lauper may have been mocked as a ditz when she emerged in 1983, but her songs have proven to be a lot more enduring than those by more critically respected artists of the 1980s. "Time After Time," for instance, has been covered by everybody from Miles Davis to Faith Hill to Uncle Kracker. That stylistic range can also be found on The Body Acoustic, on which Lauper--her voice now endearingly raspy--revisits her best-known songs with the help of an impressive gallery of guest stars. Sarah McLachlan comes in for "Time After Time," while the likes of Adam Lazzara (from emo band Taking Back Sunday), Shaggy, and Ani DiFranco also pay their respects. Okay, so we knew Lauper was a good songwriter, but what's been emerging lately is her talent as an interpreter. Here she does to her own material what she did to standards on 2003's At Last. Among the standouts are the stark "She Bop" and the catch-in-the-throat "True Colors" (both sans guests), and the superbly emotional "I'll Be Your River" (with Vivian Green). But lest you think Lauper had gone all serious on us, the album concludes with the bouncy "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"; Japanese duo Puffy Ami Yumi (a direct visual descendent of Lauper's early days) sings the chorus while Lauper herself lets loose on a new ska arrangement. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Some Very Beautiful Covers of Old Favorites!.......2007-04-23
Anyway, I saw this in the library one day and decided before thinking of buying this I better listen to see how it would sound. I mean I wondered how all these guests singers would really click with Cyndi's songs. I am happy to say I am overall pleased with this album. Money Changes Everything really sounds beautiful, and I must say She Bop sounds excellent on this album- who knew how nice it would sound suddenly slowed down? All Through the Night with Shaggy (the same guy who made the hit Angel so long ago) actually works rather well and True Colors sounds even more beautiful than it originally did.
This whole album is beautiful, but there are a few parts on the album that fade with the bigger part of it. Time After Time unfortunately I think is better on the original- Sarah Mclachlan just doesn't work well with Cyndi as much as I thought she would. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is kind of silly on this album- it does not match up with the original at all. I'll Be Your River and Fearless kind of drag as well. So there are some minor flaws yet I do really enjoy this album especially when it comes to her covering her very early hits. Above the Clouds I had never had the chance to really hear before either and it sounds just gorgeous I love it.
So I say if you're a fan of Cyndi then definitely try it out. The only thing I don't like about this album is that it doesn't have Sally's Pigeons. I would have really liked to hear her cover that song now but I guess there is always one song you love but doesn't make it on these sorts of albums. Nonetheless I highly recommend- Cyndi still sounds great.

A Great Body.......2007-02-25
Fistly I decided to watch the dvd section.
I cant believe how amazing Cyndi is to this day and how she and her music have lived and tested the test of time and WON.
Cyndi still has that zanyness and eccentricity about her and she shows that in her videos and still manages to comes across with style and grace.
The dvd section includes 4 videos and behind-the-scences which show Cyndi in great fashion. Love her and loved it.
Secondly the music, how do I explain what I heard?
I really didnt know what to expect.
There are names i knew (Sarah and Jeff) and names I didnt know (Adam, Ani and Vivian) and names I would never expect to see on a Cyndi album let alone a duet (Shaggy).
But u know what? it worked.
I found myself hooked and thats what it does to u - it captures u.
There are different versions of some of her classics and playfullness of others.
And the duets are just fantastic.
A great body of work.
Body Acoustics .......2007-01-16
The dual disc is a great idea -just flip the cd over and watch videos of your favourite songs.Makes you feel that your getting value for the money.
This has become my all time favourite cd-and you may well give it as a gift to people as I have done .

I tried it out recently on a higher quality system with expensive speakers. It may just be me, but it has the effect of percodan or loritab (pain medication).
Something about her voice, on the high end speakers multiplies the effect of relaxing me, even as I'm sitting up with eyes open. On my $100 stereo it's nothing special although still my favorite.

Fantastic!.......2007-07-18
Everything the other reviewers wrote, about feeling more focused, centered, balanced- is exactly how I felt after just one listening to the guided meditation. I tried it during the day and felt invigorated afterwards - and I tried it before bed and slept very restfully afterwards. I am relatively new to meditation and frankly not all that disciplined - I sometimes struggle to keep my mind from wandering - but I find this album really reins me in.
Highly recommended!
Well worth checking out.......2007-06-29
There are a billion meditation music cd's out there and better ones too. However, this is worth buying just for the guided chakra meditation. He walks you through the meditation explaining the name and purpose of each of the 7 major chakras without it ever feeling intruisive. There is plenty of time between his talking to allow yourself to concentrate on the chakra involved and go inside.
Of course you can do it on your own when you get used to what you are supposed to be doing but I still stick my Ipod on from time to time.
Love it!.......2007-06-25

I haven't listened to the massage music half of the CD very much, but it is very relaxing and not annoying at all. That's about the best anyone can say about most massage music that I've heard. It would also be great to do some freestyle meditation to.
excellent choice.......2006-09-02
CD1 has some beautiful soft music and it does relax one after a hard day at work.
CD2 the chakra meditation is just as good in that one starts to work with the chakra centers and one will notice the difference in ones self ater using doing the meditation a few times.
A good buy.

As learned from the broad-based popularity of his previous albums, people turn to saxophonist Boney James to do one thing: create sultry audio backdrops well suited for mingling, small talk, and romantic notions. James, rotating between tenor, soprano, and alto saxophones, faithfully delivers more of those goods on this, his sixth album. The mood sustained throughout all nine tracks (42-plus minutes runtime) is urbane, low-key, and cue-ball smooth. Chelle Davis provides breathy background vocals on the slow-grooving opening track, "Are You Ready?" and R&B crooners Shai take a more foreground role on the sweetly disarming "I'll Always Love You." Perhaps the album's most attractive cut is the slow urban crawl of "Boneyizm," with subdued interplay between James's tenor sax and Rick Braun's flügelhorn. Nothing shrill, outrageous, new, or significant awaits here, simply an engaging and pleasant listen. --Terry WoodCustomer Reviews:
