For Art Tatum, the piano was a veritable playground, a forum for endless invention. His supreme command of the instrument and his unparalleled sense of timing and touch allowed him to seemingly accomplish whatever he wished. Songs were puzzles to be dismantled and reassembled; melody, harmony, and rhythm were merely variables in the never-ending creation process. This two-CD set collects all of the recordings Tatum made at two private parties hosted by Warner Bros. musical director Ray Heindorf; the bulk of the material comes from July 1955, the remainder is from April 1950. All of the trademark Tatum elements are here: the grand melodic flourishes, the harmonic magic tricks, the flirtations with various tempos and musical styles. But what also emerges is Tatum's effervescence, his joy, and his humor. He seems to celebrate and mock these timeless melodies all at once. Is that "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" hiding in "Body and Soul"? The results are always compelling and almost always thrilling to hear. You can hear his friends gasp and chuckle along with music, and you will too.

Customer Reviews:
Genius indeed.......2007-04-04
Well, DG, it's always good to spark a discussion. Tatum's playing is very intricate and dense with notes; it is not a cool, swinging sound. I think it is beyond dispute that Tatum was one of the most technically proficient pianists who ever lived. The question is then, does all that staggering virtuosity serve a purpose? For some, hearing somebody play what almost nobody else can play is enough to justify the purchase. For others, myself included, it is beautiful music as well. For me that is an intuitive reaction-- it sounds musical and organic to me, but I am not trained to understand structural and harmonic nuance. I think DG represents a small minority of people who believe that Tatum's playing is not sophisticated or musically nuanced. I would not want a steady diet of this, but on the right day it is perfect.
Piano Genius.......2007-03-28
This is a great album. I loved his two versions of Someone to watch over me and Over the Rainbow as these are two of my favorite songs.
The magnificent reach.......2006-05-29
In my jazz- listening days many years ago I came upon the work of Art Tatum, and was captivated by it. I simply felt it was the best. He played with such sweep and such lyrical freedom. The great standard numbers did not lose their identity in his playing but rather were expanded and enhanced. The sweep of the playing and the great feeling of joy and freedom it gave remain in my mind.
What great music this man made.

I just received this double CD today and I am STILL CATCHING MY BREATH! This is my first Tatum CD and what an introduction it is, I cannot bring myself to press stop on the CD player, just let it play all day!
In my opinion what makes this even more beautiful is that it is all solo Tatum, no other instruments to hold him back.
I would give this 2cd, 7 stars if I could. The sound quality is terrific considering that they are all home recordings.
Buy it! You will be glad that you did!! Enjoy!!

"Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18
"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!
A Gem!.......2002-10-17
This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

Customer Reviews:
What music is all about.......2007-02-14
A classically trained musician, Garth Hudson brought his formidable musical skills and creativity to the world of rock as The Band's keyboard virtuoso, wind player, and arranger. In Live At The Wolf, Garth, on acoustic piano, and his wife, Maud, on voice, show how dazzlingly far beyond that earlier music their horizons now extend. Garth has said that his recent keyboard playing is better than any he did as a Band member. His improvisations, showcased here in three original piano pieces and his elegant song accompaniments, seamlessly combine jazz, roots, blues, and classical elements. In "International Medley," Garth adds patriotic tunes to this mix, and in "Concert Hora," he enriches his palette still further by performing a klezmer-like, Romanian folk dance melody on accordion. Amid all these diverse influences, one also senses in Garth's playing rock's sublime essence. Maud Hudson is a singer of flair, passion and wit, who beautifully synchronizes her rich and expressive voice with her husband's most ethereal phrasings. Together, the Hudsons have fashioned a new musical language that incorporates, yet stands apart from, all of the styles they explore.
Garth and Maud use this new language to make each of the album's song selections uniquely their own, from the early gospel "Stand By Me," to the sorrowful jazz standard "Willow Weep For Me," to the rock and roll classic, "Young Blood." They transform the lament for lost love "It Makes No Difference" into a heartfelt ode of remembrance for The Band's Rick Danko, the song's original vocalist. On Garth's impressionistic "Beyond the Breakers" (words by Eric Andersen), they wonderfully blend word and tone images of wind, water, color, and light. "The Weight" attains a sacred dimension when Garth prefaces this Band favorite with a 16th century hymn. Maud's excellent blues original, "You'll Be Thinkin'," packs buoyancy and verve. Her performance of Bob Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell" is stunning, as she speaks, sings, and whispers its words to summon ghosts of Southern slavery. Shining throughout every song are Garth and Maud's consummate artistry, gentleness of spirit, and love of music.
Live At the Wolf commemorates two significant dates. The September 2002 concert that it records was the first at London, Ontario's new Wolf Performance Hall, and also marks the beginning of the Hudsons' career as a performing duo. The CD's 2005 release celebrates Garth and Maud's 25th wedding anniversary.
This album is delightful and inexhaustible. You will never get tired of listening to it. In its understated way, it makes musical history.

"The Riches of Russian Vocal Art".......2000-12-12
Following on from the success of the first "Russian Images"disc.Vasily Savenko and Alexander Blok have again come up with a selection to suprise and delight lovers of Russian Romans. The excellent sleeve notes put into perspective this kaleidoscope:"The spectrum is broad, both chronologically, ranging from the 1840s to the 1940s, and stylistically, comprising works by composers of Russian Nationalist school, the romantic era,the rich Silver Age immediate preceding the revolution,as well as the years of the soviet regime. The choice of songs has been designed to include both well-loved favourites and such unfamiliar material as the Mosolov settings of Pushkin, composed in 1949 but not receiving their premier in the West until Vassily Savenko and Michael Dussek gave the first performance almost fifty years later. To those unfamiliar with the artistry of the bass-baritone Vassily Savenko and his distinguished pianist,Alexander Blok, this disc is sure to be a revelation-both for its exquisite songs and thrilling performance by a singer who has few equals in this genre.Savenko uses his powerful, operatic voice to great effect in Rachmaninovs "Arion",in Medtners "Invocation"and Taneyevs "And the foes stood trembling",but commands expression and nuance of the utmost delicacy in Tchaikovskys "my genius,my angel,my friend" and in Arenskys "Was it so long ago to anchanting strains".In Taneyevs beautiful, evocative setting of Baudelaires "Dense Forest",Savenko displays his depth of tone and phenomenal breath control, but the whole selection affirms him an artist of great eloquence in the service of music.Alexander Bloks Accomplished support at the piano makes this a must- have disc!

Customer Reviews:
passion and beauty.......2004-07-28
Similar to Hvorostovsky's 1991 release, Russian Romances, this collection of Russian songs by some of its most renown composers is brimming over with passion and soul. They are songs of love and loss, with solo piano accompaniment, and sung to perfection by one of the great voices of our time; Siberian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has it all, emotional expression, technical skill, breath control and marvelous phrasing, and a dark honey sound that is recognizable after a note or two.
With eleven selections from Tchaikovsky, four from Rachmaninoff, three from Rimsky-Korsakov, and a tragic, solemn piece from Borodin set to words by Pushkin, the melodies abound, and some of my favorites are Rimsky Korsakov's The Clouds Begin to Scatter, Tchaikovsky's It Happened in the Early Spring and Not a Word Beloved, and Rachmaninoff's How I Languish.
Hvorostovsky is one of the finest interpreters this genre of music, and these superb renditions are a worthy addition to any Russian music collection.
Mikhail Arkadiev plays the piano accompaniment beautifully, and the sound balance between instrument and voice is excellent. The booklet insert has the lyrics in English and German, and total playing time is 57'26.
The best!.......2001-12-26
After seeing Mr. Hvorostovsky in the Met playing Germont, I knew that this is something new, I have never heared before. This beautiful c.d of russian songs could not have been sung better. Buy it!!!
Deeply satisfying.......2001-11-23
This is another five-star recording from the most exciting baritone in opera today. This CD finds him in familiar territory, singing Russian songs as only he can. His phrasing is superb, and his dark baritone adds a haunting dimension to the many reflective numbers presented here.
It is difficult to pick out highlights from this outstanding collection of Tschaikovsky, Borodin et al, but I was particularly taken with the four Rachmaninov songs that conclude the CD. Child, You Are Beautiful Like a Flower is as lovely as its title suggests, and Hvorostovsky sings it in his tenderest fashion. For complete contrast, Spring Waters is given a bravura treatment as the baritone unleashes all the power at his disposal - a thrilling conclusion to the CD.
Hvorostovsky is ably supported throughout by pianist Mikhail Arkadiev, and the sound quality is good, though a tad distorted in Spring Waters. (Perhaps the recording engineers couldn't cope with the voice in full throttle?!) Highly recommended.
One of the best CDs I've ever heard.......2000-12-19
This is an outstanding CD in every way - a wonderful program, featuring singing that is tremendously beautiful and exciting. Hvorostovsky doesn't just sing the Tchaikowsky songs, he lives them! (And he champions them in the way that Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau championed Hugo Wolf.) Throughout this recital, he is partnered by Mikhail Arkadiev, a stupendous pianist and a deeply sensitive accompanist. Their performance of Rachmaninoff's "Spring Waters" is one of the most thrilling things I've ever heard. This is a real treasure!
AND WHAT A RUSSIAN SOUL!.......1999-06-06
One of the first recordings by this absolutely dynamic young baritone. 'For the Shores of Your Distant Homeland' and 'The Love of a Dead Man' are enough to send shivers up one's spine, and the more delicate songs come across with appropriate tone and control. The Hvorostovsky disc I would recommend for someone listening for the first time.

Rich and moving.......2001-02-18
Amaize's selection of art songs covers a wide range of poets, among them Sappho, Langston Hughes, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Robert Burns. Whatever he's singing, you know it comes from someplace very deep in his soul. A wonderful CD.
