Gordon Goodwin has built a bigger-than-life reputation with his composing, arranging and musical instrumentation skills. He combines all these talents on XXL, his second creation as ringleader for the Big Phat Band. After three Emmy Awards and two Grammy nominations, Gordon is still Hungry for more. The Big Phat Band is Gordon's creation...and his muse. XXL finds a stable full of LA's best Jazz players - Eric Marienthal, Eddie Daniels, Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine and others eighteen deep - wailing alongside their leader. These players have over a dozen Top-10 Jazz albums under their collective belt. Their passion drives Gordon over the Top! Add Three more guest performances and the mix hits full steam. Seven-time Grammy winning vocal group Take 6 checks in for two cuts. Billboard chart-topper Brian McKnight breathes new soul into the Jazz classic "Comes Love." And Johnny Mathis, the man who needs no introduction, arrives to "Let The Good Times Roll." XXL finds Gordon Goodwin at the top of his game. Virtuoso performances abound on the record, by Gordon and all his key companions. Traditional big band music feels more alive than ever. The electric energy at Gordon's sold-out west coast gigs can only testify that the man has something cooking.

Excellent Jazz.......2007-05-14
Inspirational (mostly).......2007-01-28
Some of the songs may be a little over-arranged, but Goodwin's charts are so creative and the playing so top-notch that it's okay. There are a couple dogs on here, though. "The Quiet Hour" is "smooth jazz", like what you hear in the dentists' chair, and vocalist Brian McNight sounds like an American Idol wannabe with his warbling take on "Comes Love."
The other vocalists on the album, Johnny Mathis and the fantastic Take 6, do a nice job. Michael Brecker (RIP) plays a great solo on "A Game of Inches", and Eddie Daniels does a fine job as a guest as well.
The tunes on this record, most of which are originals, are creative and varied. Mr. Goodwin gives us his own interpretation of several cover tunes as well, most notably Mozart's 40th Symphony in Gm (never thought of that as a cover tune!). Very creative.
But for all the clever arrangements and perfect playing, it's really refreshing to finally hear a couple good ol' blues swingers at the end ("What Sammy Said" and "Let the Good Times Roll"). These tunes bring the album to a fun end, though I would've liked the band to play it a little less "safe." Sometimes they're a little TOO perfect. Let 'er rip, guys! Lose control once in a while!
Overall, I'd say that this is a fine addition to anyone's jazz library.
