Tisdale may never completely step out of the shadow of the great bassist Stanley Clarke, but he is further emerging with his own voice on each album--and Clarke has never led the NCAA in scoring. The former pro hoopster can't help the Clarke-influenced phrasing he burns into "Ready to Hang," "The Time Is Here," and "Off Into It." Producer/keyboardist Jeff Lorber makes everybody on his team better, and he's in the lineup on three tracks. Synthesizer programmer James Lloyd from Pieces of a Dream also contributes with a duet on the title track, feeding Tisdale a funky slam dunk. Tisdale's cover of "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" could easily cross over to the urban pop market, but his version of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" is the only real air ball. --Mark Ruffin

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

This CD rocks from the first cut to the last. An absolute MUST buy!

4 out of 5 stars smooth all the way........2006-08-07

With a true calling for the bass it's unbelieveable that Tisdale has ever once played professional Basketball, he knows how to get the party started and keep the interest going and the people dancin'. nuff said.

I love this album like the rest of Wayman's work. Reading another review talking about this being the debut on Koz's label answered a HUGE question for me about this album. I was wondering why in the world Wayman did "Better Days" with Koz instead of Everette Harp. Wayman and Harp did an absolutely remarkable job on Harp's "Better Days". But that aside, this album is what you come to expect from Wayman.

4 out of 5 stars Hang Time revisited 2006.......2006-09-11

After buying the newest release, The Silver Lining, and seeing them live in August of this year, I had a vague recollection of this cd. I seemed to remember all of my guy friends having it, playing it in their cars, and me NOT liking it very much. Curiosity getting the better of me, I bought a copy to see if it was the cd I remembered. Yes, in fact, it was. But with one big difference. No longer a slave to the hair bands of 1988, when this disk came out, I fell in love with it immediately. It suffers some from minimal production, tinny, little bass, and a serious issue with guitars completely drowning out the vocals. (There's a great counterpoint vocal in Cartoon that is all but inaudible and completely indecipherable.) There are strong songs on this disk (Sometime to Return, Cartoon, Beggars and Choosers) that deserve better than they got, and of course there is some attitudinal racket. Soul Asylum was big on great songwriting peaks followed quickly by a tumble into a sonic abyss, but overall it's a great record. Not without its jokes, Twiddly Dee is a mosh squaredance, and Put the Bone In is...I don't know what it is. Funny is what it is.
I love this cd now. I'd love to see some of these songs get some new treatment, just to see what they could be, although I've heard some of them live and they're just amazing. If you have never heard anything pre-Grave Dancers, pick this up. And pick up the followup as well. Great music, missed by the world.

5 out of 5 stars Still sounds great after all these years.......2006-07-28

This was my favorite album of 1988 and I played it until my college roommates had memorized it all through osmosis. And it still sounds great! I just saw Soul Asylum live (I first saw them in 1986--20 years ago) and "Cartoon" still rocked. Soul Asylum is a terrific, solid band and incredible live. Buy this and go see them!

5 out of 5 stars an unknown classic.......2006-03-04

I bought this the year it came out in '88 after hearing it played in a music store. It's probably the best thing they ever did. Been waiting for them to match it but SA went gradually down hill after this. They caught on to mainstream audiences with Grave Dancer's Union and the bland radio friendly MTV sellout "Runaway Train" and it did em in. But Hang Time is great, highly recommend this lost classic.

4 out of 5 stars Tight rock...for an audience of zero.......2005-04-29

Just like everyone else, I hadn't heard of Soul Asylum prior to 1992. And despite the fact that I thought Grave Dancers Union was just an okay album, something compelled me to get my hands on Soul Asylum's back catalog. Don't ask me what it was that drove me to this, perhaps it's better off unexplained.

So I slowly acquired the music from their past, through the Twin Tone and A&M years. And I have to say I am most impressed with Hang Time. The whole thing just seems to, ahem, hang together very well.

Not many cues are taken from Made To Be Broken or While You Were Out, Soul Asylum's two previous albums that were filled with attitude and racket. Signing onto a major label and working with a production staff of Ed Stasium and Lenny Kaye seemed to give the band the right amount of posterior kick to sound like a completely different band. And it works. Oh, does it work.

Many of these songs, though rooted in punk, take a completely different direction in which Dave Pirner learns how to write songs with big ideas rather than nail a set of words to some crunch chords. The guitar interplay of Pirner and Dan Murphy are a perfect match, and the intricacies of the music (if such a thing exists in punk rock) are strong enough of a foundation for the catchiness to rest on. Nothing here sounds forced or backward.

Songs like Sometime To Return, Standing In The Doorway, and the Murphy original Cartoon prove that Soul Asylum could carry the weight of mature songcraft just as well as their Minneapolis peers, Husker Du and the Replacements. According to my description, you would have thought this album would've broken the bank for the band long before the Runaway Train came along. But as of this date, Hang Time has yet to sell 100,000 copies.

So don't confuse quality with quantity. Hang Time could've been seen as a post-punk milestone had the musical climate been different and if A&M would have promoted the whole deal. But alas, this is the one that got away.

5 out of 5 stars Battle of Bands.......2005-04-02

The Mats and SA. I would ask the reviewer who said everything done by the Mats is better than anything SA did, if he has ever listened to Don't Tell A Soul, or All Shook Down. Pure crap. I love the Mat's, but come on, that was the Paul Westerberg band. He is my two cents. This is Soul Asylum's best album and best period as a live band. You could still see them at college's with about 20 other local fans. The only albums better by the Mat's would be Let It Be and possibly Pleased To Meet Me (I know everyone loves Tim, but it did nothing for me). I would much rather spend time listening to Made To Be Broken than Sorry Ma, or Stink. And in conclusion Husker Du were better than both of them.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20

Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15

no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.

5 out of 5 stars A master makes his debut.......2006-12-03

I met Roger 40 years ago when we attended a summer music camp called Ramblerny, which was directed by Phil Woods. Even as a teenager, Roger showed an impressive mastery of the baritone sax, an instrument whose size and throaty power was well suited to his personality. Even a casual observer would have seen that Roger was destined for great things. And in this album, he fulfills that promise, and takes his place along side baritone sax masters such as Danny Banks and Gerry Mulligan. This hip and hard swinging album is a must. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Monster Monster Monster.......2006-07-27

No, Roger is _not_ my cousin.
I play all the saxes, and this guy's a real monster bari player. He's taken the big horn to a whole new level. I am rarely so impressed with jazz recorded since, well, about 1965 or so, but Roger's record blows me away (recorded in 2000). The rhythm section is does a great job of supporting him, and the album is a nice collection of originals and a few standards. Bopper plus extra mas mucho, baby.

5 out of 5 stars Roger can really play!!!.......2001-11-25

First, a disclaimer...Roger is my cousin, so I am definitely biased. Nevertheless, I truely loved this CD. As Chet Baker once said when I visited with him and Roger between sets at a NYC jazz club years ago, "Roger can really play!!".Roger takes advantage of his first featured album to show off his virtuoso skills on both baritone and soprano sax and even bass clarinet. My favorite track is Roger's smooth and mellow rendition of "Autumn in New York". I couldn't help but think of the tragic events of 9/11 when listening to Vernon Duke's classic and beautiful tribute to NYC. My second favorite track is Roger's composition, "Just One of the Cats", a bouncy tune with a melody that keeps jumping back into my head. On "Trane's Dance", another new Rosenberg composition, Roger's soprano sax playing definitely brought me back to Coltrane's sound. I also greatly enjoyed Roger's melodius and sometimes whimsical renditions of "That Old Devil Moon" and "Killer Joe". I hope you enjoy this album as much as I did!!
