Evidence that one can make a musical about anything, Exhibit A: 1776. As one might expect, the whole concept of making a musical about the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence was greeted in the late 1960s with, well, ridicule. The show debuted on Broadway in 1969, and three years later, when its run finally ended, it was its producers who had the last laugh. In addition, it toured for an additional two years and beat out Hair (in 1969 yet!) for a Tony Award. This recording, with the original Broadway cast, includes many of the same actors who went on to star in the film, the version with which most audiences today are probably familiar. One notable exception is Rex Everhart, who replaced Howard da Silva at some performances and on this recording. But there's still William Daniels as John Adams, though in some cases his performance is more subdued than it was on film. Musically, 1776 is an odd creation, considering when it came into being. As one might expect, there's a lot of fife and drum going on, especially in the opening number and during "The Lees of Old Virginia." For those less than familiar with the plot, it hinges on the idealism of Adams, who's trying his best to back up the American Revolution with some legislative action, and spends much of his time arguing with either the Continental Congress or God, as in "Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve": "A second flood, a simple famine / Plagues of locusts everywhere / Or a cataclysmic earthquake / I'd accept with some despair / But no, you sent us Congress / Good God, sir, was that fair?" (One could argue that he gets further with God.) While not entirely historically accurate, and containing some rather peculiar numbers (Franklin, Jefferson, and Adams sitting around debating what their new country's national bird is going to be ranks among the oddest), there's no questioning 1776's staying power. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:

And as to the reviewer who was shocked that it would win out over HAIR? Listen to "Mamma Look Sharp" or "Molasses to Rum to Slaves" to hear exactly the play's political and often-unflattering ideological landscape. This was definitely a Vietnam-era play whose content was as disturbingly pertinent, then, as it is, now. And, despite all of this, the score and play never become leaden or preachy. On the contrary, each performance is a gem, and each character is witty and unique. Who knew that history could be a passionate and fun adventure?

Brilliant, Definitive and Remarkably Accurate!.......2005-12-18
William Daniels IS John Adams to many people, and even though the story of the birth of the United States probably wasn't this lyrical and lively, Composer Sherman Edwards was historically accurate in the facts of the tale.
In addition to learning about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this is also love story... in fact two love stories, with John Adams and his wife Abigail, separated by circumstance and interacting only in his mind, and Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Martha, here, played by the big throated (and now legendary) Betty Buckley.
There is also a sense of fraternity, with the members of the Continental Congress grappling with the concept of breaking away from a tyranical ruler. And even though you know the outcome, the story is still filled with tension and excitement in the mechanics of it. Just how DID this country get formed?
The disc's liner notes explain the show's libretto and give you some rare behind-the-scenes info about the creation of the musical, the challenges it faced before becoming the standard that it now is, and a bit about the amazing Mr. Edwards, which is a story worthy of being told as well.
It's an Independence Day must!

If your previous album was a slow-burning success story, it can be hard to be expected to hit the ground running on the follow-up. Fortunately, the Kaiser Chiefs have done just that on the fantastically titled Yours Truly, Angry Mob. Like Employment, their debut and this album's predecessor, Yours Truly... is full of radio-friendly, hook-ridden tunes that mask cunningly subversive lyrics. The Kaiser Chiefs are very much a Britpop band, which is probably why "Highroyds" opening couplet--"I remember nights out when we were young/They weren't very good, they were rubbish"--sounds like something Jarvis Cocker would sing while being backed by the boys from Blur. And it's this lyrical sentiment that's carried throughout the album, much of which is satire wrapped up in potential singles. Best of all, and a perfect example of this, is "The Angry Mob," sure to be shouted along to by exactly the people it's targeting. It's the rare band that can mock and judge its audience and still be loved by them, but that's exactly what the Kaiser Chiefs have done on Yours Truly, Angry Mob. --Ted KordAlbum Description

Opening the disc is the uncharacteristic mellow and melodic straight ahead love song "Ruby", the lead off single, which gave them their first UK #1. Following is "The angry mob" whose sing-a-long chorus comes after a tempo shift towards the end of the track.
"Heat dies down" is a catchy, sunny and upbeat song with a terrific guitar riff, sounding not unlike something Franz Ferdinand would do. In a similar vein is the choppy "Learnt my lesson well" with sunny sounding harmonies.
Returning to the Kaiser Chiefs we all know and love, cheeky and rebellious sounding ("Everyday I love you less & less" & "I predict a riot" anyone?) are "Highroyds", "Thank you very much", the buddy song "My kind of guy", the punk feel of "Everything is average nowadays" (the album's second single), the defiant "I can do it without you", the latter displaying their acerbic wit to the full.
Slowing things down, we get the tender acoustic "Love's not a competition (but I'm winning)", the brief piano ballad "Boxing champ", and "Try your best".
Closing is the delightful Smiths-like "Retirement", (I want to get by without the man on my back, they sing) a song we all wish we could sing. Ah!!
Rip-roaring fun!!

Sara's voice is utter perfection.......2007-06-06
Sara's voice is pure honey, and her band is wonderful. Her drummer, Matt Slocum, is particularly talented. It's not often that I find myself hoping for a drum solo, but Matt's playing does that. He brings a lyricism to the drums that only a very few players out there do -- a true jazz drummer.
I had the great honor of having Sara and her band sing at my wedding, just before they'd started recording this album. I'm in the classical music business, and I asked a friend w/jazz connections if she could help me find a band for my wedding. She asked me what sort of things I like. When I replied, "I love Ella Fitzgerald," she said she knew exactly who I should hire. She approached Sara on my behalf, and after hearing her and the band at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, I was blown away. I hired her on the spot. Sara's a very nice, down to earth person, on top of being a prodigious talent. I feel very blessed to have had her be a part of that special day -- made even more special by the great music she provided.
I can't wait to get my hands on her next album.

If it took a solo album for Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. to make sure his songs were finally heard, file this one under "their loss" for those egocentric East Siders. The first in the group to make his own record, Hammond (son of the triumphant '70s singer and composer) comes up big, hammering out 10 songs brimming with beatific melodies ("Call an Ambulance"), sugary harmonies ("Scared"), and the same rampant guitar ("In Transit") that he wields with the big band. Though he recruits prominent pals Sean Lennon and Ben Kweller for the ride, it's unnecessary, as Hammond's voice--both capable and charmingly unkempt--is a step above the monotonous murmur of Strokes singer Julian Casablancas (who also appears). Hammond's far-reaching influences drift from AM pop to punk rock, but the mop-topped musician mostly keeps it close to the vest, blending shades of the Beach Boys ("Cartoon Music for Superheroes," complete with toy piano), John Lennon ("Blue Skies"), and the Pixies ("Back to the 101"). Now he just has to make sure his band gets a copy of the record. --Scott HolterCustomer Reviews:
One of the unexpected surprises of the year.......2007-06-09
On "Yours to Keep" (12 tracks; 40 min.), the opener "Cartoon Music for Super Heroes" is like a blast from the 1960s Beach Boys. Upbeat "In Transit" is probably as close a Strokes song as anything on this album, and I love it. "Everyone Gets A Star" and "Bright Young Thing" are just about as good. "101" (1st single) is another one of those Strokes-sounding songs, and caps of an incredible first half of the album, which I rate 5 stars. The second half slows down considerably, although there as still some great moments like "Scared" (which features Julian Casablancas and Sean Lennon) and "Hard to Live in the City". The last 2 tracks of the album ("Postal Blowfish", which is just excellent, and "Well... All Right") are listed as "bonus tracks", but why is unclear to me, they simply sound like part of the album proper.
I have to admit that I really did not know what to expect from Hammond's solo debut, and I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. It flows by smoothly and at 40 min., it's over before you know it. One of the better surprises of the yeat so far for me.
excellent!.......2007-05-14
3 1/2 stars - I hear The Strokes.......2007-04-17
With that said, this is still a solid album. There is not a bad song on this thing, and 101 blew me away when I heard it. There is nothing not to like about this album, but it's just "a not quite as good version" of The Strokes - which still isn't all that bad.
Standout Track: 101
Albert Hammond Jr.: Your to Keep.......2007-04-08
Now I just hope that there's one thing this album *doesn't* have in common with Tom Verlaine's work--that it goes under the radar like his stuff did!
Free from the world.......2007-03-31
It starts on a note that's very Beach Boys -- sunny, psychedelic-edged, and slightly sleepy. "Goodnight, I said to you goodnight/Dream of all the impossible/And you wake you see/That all these dreams aren't fake/They're real/Not impossible," Hammond croons in a slightly sleepy voice.
All that changes with "In Transit," the most Strokesian of all the songs -- a peppy, uptempo guitar number with slightly rebellious lyrics. But with "Bright Young Things," the style switches back to a circling guitar melody and a sunny musical edge, some folksy ballads, catchy rockers that bloom into peppy pop, toe-tapping acoustic plucks, and ringing songs about vacations in Jamaica.
Despite the variety of styles, Hammond actually does a pretty good job keeping a signature "sound" in these songs -- something a bit happier and slightly wistful than the Strokes. It does have a bit of a split personality, between rock and sunny pop, but I suspect it's something that Hammond will iron out in future albums.
The music has plenty of guitar -- both acoustic and bass -- both in lean sinewy riffs and in circling melodies. But Hammond and a variety of musicians (including Sean Lennon, Julian Casablancas, Ben Kweller, and Sammy James Jr) wrap the songs in a thin layer of other instruments -- tinkly melodica, ukelele, rippling keyboard, and some brass. There's even whistling at one point.
Hammond's voice is kind of scratchy, but it's still pretty pleasant to the ear. And he throws a lot of passion into his singing, whether it's a murmury croon or a belt-out wail. "And you will only hold me/If I will never tell you it would end/And you will never have me/Cause you were only wanting to be friends/And you will always hold out till he gave out."
"Yours To Keep" is a triumph for Hammond -- a solid, shimmering album that straddles between pop and rock. Definitely a good listen, but not for people seeking another Strokes album.

Though the music of Canadian fiddler Natalie MacMaster remains rooted in her native Cape Breton, it continues to branch in some surprising directions. No purist, MacMaster employs an aggressive guitar and rhythm section, along with mini-Moog and electric pipes on "Matt & Nat's," while the jazzy intro to the "Flea as a Bird" medley seems to channel the style of Stephane Grappelli. Guest vocalist Michael McDonald gives the traditional "Danny Boy" a soulful, somber twist, and "Farewell to Peter" offers an instrumental elegy to Peter Jennings, MacMaster's late friend and countryman. Yet uptempo instrumentals dominate, as the opening "Volcanic Jig" builds to an eruption worthy of its title, "David's Jig" employs her step dancing as percussion, and her flamboyant virtuosity through much of the music finds her rarely settling for one note where she can squeeze in three or four. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

In the Brent Spiner Fangirl Legal Contract, it specifies that said fangirl must purchase any and all vocal recordings containing said Brent Spiner (and that she will not, in any way or at any time, mention how much he sounds like Judy Garland on steroids). Which is why I purchased this CD.
He... ripped... into... this... part. That's the only way I can put it. I was floored from start to finish.
The work, as a whole, is something of a consuming thing. Be prepared to sit in silence for a few minutes after you're done with this one, because after hearing the whole thing, silence will be the only followup that does it justice.

Best album I've heard in a very long time..........2007-06-18
I think it's amazing how much the two sound alike both vocally and lyrically and Duritz is one of the greatest songwriters of the decade, but I think it's unquestionable that the best of his work is melancholy. Adam Duritz has transcended songs like Mr. Jones and Colorblind, but it's always to the well structured, shallow pop-hit like American Girls or Accidentally In Love that is the result. Adam is one of my favorite songwriters, so I don't mean any disrespect to him or to the talent it takes to craft a pop-hit. However, when you listen to Eliot's song This Colorful World, you discover something that's very dynamic, that also has real weight to it. It's not melancholy, but it's also not a flavor of the moment pop song. Eliot seems to effortless transition between the pessimistic and optimistic perspectives in his work and it doesn't come across as contrived (even if it probably is). If you have an appreciation for singer-songwriters you MUST check this guy out.
It's very difficult to give anything five stars, because when you do that I think you're saying you really believe the product could not possibly be any better, well this is a five star album. The weight behind this album is incredible, it feels like a life time of songs, slowly crafted to perfection. I have no idea how Eliot will follow this album, but I don't think he has to.

Classic Rod Stewart.......2005-10-15
Pure rock at it's best.
Rod enters the 80's on top!.......2005-01-25
This is just about the perfect height of Rod's career. It's mostly upbeat and rocking, but with an 80's pop sound, and remnants of his disco era left (this was 1981--not long after) yet before he descended into adult contemporary hell around (and especially after) 1991.
1. The title track charges in with the energy of rockers like "Hot Legs" and the slight disco feel of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." It's very 80's sounding (that's a good thing!), with an electronic, hard-edged new wave beat. In fact, it could almost pass as hard rock.
2. How Long -- Rod turns out a great cover of the already great Four Tops song. This is more of a mid-tempo, 80's pop/rock/R&B sounding variation. I won't quite say it outdoes the original, but it's pretty close.
3. Tora Tora Tora -- Probably the hardest rocker on the album. It sounds alot like a rowdy-type party song he could've done with the Faces 10-15 years before, just with a slight 80's feel to it.
4. Tear it Up -- The upbeat party rock continues here, with this very classic/oldies-rock-inspired tune with an accoustic piano intro. In fact, the guitar riff strongly recalls "Johnny B. Goode."
5. Only A Boy -- Sounds like it could've been autobiographical, about Rod's younger days and his beginnings in rock n' roll. Stylistically, it's a mid tempo pop/rock number with a slight Scottish ballad tinge.
6. Just Like A Woman -- The second cover song here, this time of a Bob Dylan tune. Done in a somewhat ballad style, it's my least favorite song, but still not bad.
7. Jealous -- Another song that kinda lends itself to the early 80's, with traces of Rod's disco sound leftover. Mid to fast tempo rock that sounds alot like the Stones' "Miss You" (especially in the guitar riff).
8. Sonny -- The first of two softer ballads here, this one the superior of them both. Starting off with synth-styled keyboards reminding me of Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love for You" and ascending to a near-mid tempo toward the middle of the song.
9. Young Turks -- Ahh, the big hit that I love! The story of two teen lovers, Patty & Billy, who run away from home together. Rod tells it from a third person, but it seems to be more from their POV.
If you were to read the lyrics without hearing the music, you could easily think it was a country song. Not to scare y'all away, though, it's really a new wave-y pop/arena rock song, basically like a slightly toned-down version of the title track.
10. Never Give Up on a Dream -- The inspirational, touching, semi upbeat piano/pop ballad here, about (and dedicated to the memory of) runner Terry Fox, who died of cancer around the time this album was recorded.
I recently also found out that he had an album after this, BODY WISHES in 1983 (I always used to think 1984's CAMOUFLAGE was the follow-up!), which, from the two hits I've heard, keeps a pretty similar style.
