When two out of every three Cadillac Escalades in Anywheresville USA are blasting your single, it says something. What that something is, no one’s quite sure yet, but "Still Tippin", Mike Jones’ ode to flossing pimped out rides featuring guests Slim Thug and Paul Wall, is southern psychedelic rap at it’s finest, with it’s trippy, slo-mo riddims tailor made for truck speakers. Sadly, a too-large chunk of the album unconsciously celebrates Jones’ lyrical limitations, beginning with "Back Then" where he and his Swisha House homies sample and flip near identical beats and rhymes as on "Still Tippin’". Huh. Jones staying power comes more from repeating his name and lyrics as often as humanly possible providing a great lesson in branding, but not much else. The clever introspective letter he pens to his late nana ("Grandma"), who passed away just before he blew up, demonstrates that his writing isn’t completely artless. But how many times can one stomach verses about his name or vacuous tales about his "…chain full of rocks and princess cuts in my watch" ("Flossin")? As with any Lil’ Jon or Yin Yang Twins produce, you have to singularly cop it for the colossal beats, here provided by DJ Paul and Micheal "5000" Watts. --Dalton Higgins

2 out of 5 stars First Major Debut With The Same Redundant Flow (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 Stars).......2007-02-28

I used to live in San Antonio, Texas between 2000-2004. Somewhere around that time one of my friends put in some chopped & screwed mixtape by some guy named Mike Jones. I thought it was okay at best, although he did have somewhat of a flow. One thing I seemed to notice in his songs was the repititon of his name "Mike Jones. WHO? Mike Jones. WHO?", as well as repeating the same line 4 times so he can have his verse the full 16 bars. I thought, "Okay...maybe he is trying to do something different. I don't know..." Well then his debut dropped in 2005, and guess what? His flow has not changed one bit. He still shouts out his name throughout his tracks and repeats the same line four times in many of his songs. Now he had brought a new gimmick, saying his phone number in his songs as well (I guess I wasn't the only person who dialed that number). So really his flow really hasn't changed at all since I first heard him, which was somewhere in late 2003 (which is funny because he said at that time "Who Is Mike Jones" comming soon).

I won't lie though. I was hyped up to see Texas artists finally get their albums out (Slim Thug, Pall Wall, Chamillionare, and of course Mike Jones). I bought this the same week it came out for my support, only to be dissapointed. And to the day I'm typing my review, I've only played this a total of three times, and had very much trouble making it to the end of this album. A lot of these songs have absolutely no replay value. "Type Of N**** U Need" and "Cuttin' (remix)" are some of the worst tracks that I've heard from Mike Jones.

There are some tracks that I liked. Ironically the two singles were the best songs on his album. "Still Tippin'" with the help of Slim Thug and Pall Wall was probably the best song on the album. And a close second was "Back Then" which if you haven't already noticed, the chorus is from "Still Tippin". "Five Years From Now" is okay, so I'll call that my honorable mention track.

So "Who Is Mike Jones?" was a horrible CD, although I admit it was catchy (that might explain why it went platnum). I really can't recommend this to anyone, except those of Texas music as well as Chopped & Screwed music (the version I had came with a chopped & screwed CD). Even so, I know for a fact Texas is more capable of this. If you want anything from Texas, give Slim Thug, Chamillionare, Lil Flip, or even UGK a listen. I just cannot recommend this to anyone else. Hopefully while he is recording his next CD, he thought about changing his flow. Word.

i gotta say the beats on this album is real good, but the downfall on this album is his lyrics, all he seems to talk about is his name, which aint worth your money and time...

2 out of 5 stars Grade A production, 2nd grade dropout lyrics.........2006-10-12

Who is Mike Jones? He's an H-Town rapper, supported by the Swishahouse click, who loves to repeat his name. Who Is Mike Jones? may sound like an autobiographical album at first, but anyone who's heard anything from this album can tell you it's far from it. I still don't know anything about Mike Jones aside from his career, and the fact that he's one unintentionally funny dude.

While Mike Jones is clearly a weak emcee, even by mainstream standards, one thing that can't be overlooked is how much personality he has. Jones' personality is the only reason he's succeeded in this business, and even if his personality is more irritating than anything(and it is), he still has that one key attribute that keeps you from straight-up hating him, and lets you laugh at his stupidity and redundance more than anything. I mean, the guy mentions that THIS VERY ALBUM is "being released soon" on some of the tracks. They maybe mixtape cuts, but you'd think they could've edited out all the "Who Is Mike Jones? comin' soon" messages throughout the album.

Now, production is where this album succeeds. It's hard not to get lost in the beats on Still Tippin'(which also features two prime guest appearances from Paul Wall and Slim Thug) and Back Then, especially the former. Those are the obvious highlights, as other people have pointed out in reviews before mine. Still Tippin' is a Southern classic, and the only thing you regret after hearing this song is that Mike Jones' verse wasn't given to a better rapper in the Swishahouse. Other production found on this album like Got It Sewed Up(remix), Flossin', and the majority of cuts sport phat, and slow beats that're hard for any head to hate on.

In the end, this is a good album to ride to; perhaps even a great album to ride to. When you actually pay attention to the things Mike says though, this is unintentionally hilarious at best, and completely moronic at worst. If you're a fan of H-Town hip-hop, it's worth it for the production. If not, this is most definitely something you should avoid.

see, i, 99.99% of the time dislike the nu-mtv (C)Rap and leave it be by itself because it doesnt bother me....i dont watch mtv, listen to any radio, or have any friends who play this stuff, but i hear this stuff in just about every macho SUV driving republican's car....and i always hear people saying "Mike Jones" in random conversations...i mean at first i thought people were just large Clash fans and liked "Mick Jones" from The Clash and managed to get his name wrong ...and then i find ..the truth.. i see a trend of this average joe being constantly played/name tossed around anywhere i go.....like a virus to real rappers(i dont even care for rap that much)...turn off your radio and mtv...for a start at least. this is corporate takeover and brain numbing at its finest....just look at the titled.."who is Mike Jones?"...that is basically what ive been asking for a good year now!....why does this "mike jones" get so much credit? why would the corporations try to idolize this guy?..(because i know its working..just listen to some random conversations and this guy's name is bound to pop up eventually.)..cant we idolize some rapper with some ideals for once? enough with overemphasis on useless stuff and macho tough guy things. this is more of your 50 cent, nelly, and paul wall drivel....and most people will buy into because they will feel culturally ignorant and "oh so un-hip" if not.

2 out of 5 stars Flashes of brilliance....but mostly crap........2006-07-21

Mike Jones! WHO? Mike Jones!....this gets kinda boring after a while, doesn't it? In any event, Mike Jones does have flashes of a decent rapper (well, at least in this watered-down era of garbage that we dare call rap) but sadly this album just ends up being a mixture of decent beats, repetitive and mostly meaningless lyrics and just overall blandness. The only reason why I decided to give this 2 stars is because Still Tippin' and Flossin' (Listen to Big Moe "sing" and tell me you don't laugh!). If there are some songs on here that you like, just burn them onto a CD or find them for your IPOD or whatever. Spend your hard earned money and go by a Z-Ro or Scarface CD; they are far more worthy of your time and money.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

1 out of 5 stars Who Mike Jones? Who Cares?.......2006-03-24

Mike Jones isn't anything different. Still Tippin is talking about what every other rapper has already covered. Who cares if your "tippin" on 4 4s? All the other songs are just basic rap songs with no real meaning. Also, how many times does this guy need to say his name or give out his phone number?

1 out of 5 stars worse rapper award goes to who mike jones.......2006-03-22

this is sad a disgrace for hiphop houston had better rappers back in the day geto boys, tmt, big mike, big mello, ganksta nip, terrorists, klondike kat, devin the dude, 5th ward boyz, tela now we get clowns like mike jones tired of seeing ignorant fools show their gold teeth reminds me of bill robinson, and stepin fetchit they sure would lovbe grills if they was living today mike's music sucks all he does is repeat himself over and over and who wanna call your cel phone I dont.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars and here is why..........2006-03-20

Ok granted Mike Jones is FAR from the best rapper but yet he still manages his flow and sound to be hot. He says his name to the point where you wanna gun butt the nicca, but yet it still makes you shout WHO? And lastly, all the hype is just about worth it cuz he was the one who REALLY opened the doors for the current H town domination of hip hop. DJ SCREW and 'Face and a few others are the fathers but it's Jones who brought screwed n chopped to the mainstream, or rather they came to him. I can't call him a sellout cuz he did it like ol Blue Eyes did...HIS WAY!
So now to the album, we all know how infectiously catchy and dope "Still tippin" and "Back then" were and still are! So what if they were played to def, you gonna say "Goldigger" isn't and that's a far inferior jam! There are cuts that are just so so, no doubt, but his bangers like the aforementioned as well as "Turning Lane", "5 years from now" and "Cuttin" are some bangers f*** where ya from! I say you cannot look at Mike Jones for his lyrical ability, its obvious he is not up to the marker, but ahem, neither is a certain Missa West, but it's the beats, the sound, just the whole feel of this album that makes it the undeniable screwed and chopped CLASSIC that it is. They are screwing and choppin friggin Britney Spears and Ashanti nowadays, and that is wack, but the trend had to eventually hit the big time. Mike don't care bout dat he doin his thing and doing it well, with authenticity. That is reason enough, if you LIKE H town screwd n chopped muzik, to support him and cop this and all his albums. And of course, we have to mention that "drank" yup that lean! I never had the chance to lean but I have been inebriated on DXM which I hear is similar to the Codeine Promethezine high, and let me tell you...this album made so much SENSE haha! I won't say that is the reason I bump this and like it so much, but if you happen to be sippin barre, then this is the guidebook right here! JEAH!

    Album Description

There's one name ringing louder in the rap underground than any other right now-Mike Jones. Who? While an indie Swishahouse, the freestyler garnered sales of more than 250,000 CDs, sold-out shows from Cleveland to Indianapolis to hometown HOuston, shouts from Jay-Z and DJ Clue during an "MTV Direct Effect" episode, a deal with Reebok, and a clothing line. Now he lands on a major label. Soon everyone will know: Who Is Mike Jones?

Word.

If you are interested in beats, then this is the album to get. I just like how much it sounds. I am a big fan of Chopped and Screwed music, especially of Swishahouse records since they are bringing it to the mainstream crowd.

    1 out of 5 stars Oh god........2005-08-15

I accidentally bought this, thinking it was Mike Jones' studio album, NOT the chopped and screwed version. Oh god how wrong I was. This is terrible. I tried to take it back to the store, Best Buy, to get the real CD, and they wouldn't do it. Wow I'll never make that mistake again. This is 1000x worse than Mike Jones' cd. They ruined it.
