West Coast Coolin'

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Each of his five albums has charted Top 5 Contemporary Jazz and his last four have also reached the R&B Top 50. A Smooth Jazz star with a major Urban AC audience, Norman Brown follows 2002’s Grammy®-winning Just Chillin’ with West Coast Coolin’, featuring songs written by Eric Benét, James Poyser and Norman Brown himself. Renowned for his guitar sound, Brown now debuts his sexy, slick vocals on West Coast Coolin’, including a remake of Marvin Gaye’s classic "What’s Goin’ On." As West Coast Coolin’ proves, there’s no one smoother or cooler than Norman Brown.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and right on time!!!.......2007-05-10

I've been a fan of Norman's since day one and this album is another perfect reflection of how great of an artist he is. I've read the many great reviews and the few negative reviews. As far as the negative reviewers it's obvious that you are not Norman Brown fans, but rather fans of the genre of Jazz or Smooth Jazz. This is what limits you in understanding artists as individuals. The vibe on this outing is ultra hip, creative, and cool. The contributors on this album are all successful(check the bio's on James Poysner & Jay Dillah) creative genuises with their own unique sound. The selections are all worthy of praise and their is not a boring track on the album. This is a must have for any true music lover. I applaud Norman for reaching beyond the standard format and rendering something fresh. Like the album title states this is the ultimate groove for cooling out on a sunny day and just chilling.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Norman Brown Finally Arrives!.......2007-01-06

Although I'm late writing a review for this CD I'm amazed once again with Norman Brown brilliance. I have purchased all of Norman Brown CD's from day one and I must say his song arrangements and studio sound quality improves on each CD. Thanks once again on his coalition with Paul Brown, Norman Brown has finally carved his name in stone with the great George Benson and Wes Montgomery as guitarist supreme. I've watched Norman Brown in concert with his great playing on guitar and his excellent singing and I have waited for this CD that shows both qualities. The Real Norman Brown Finally Arrives!

5 out of 5 stars Very refreshing listening........2004-09-12

Another 1957 stellar recording. It's becoming almost boring (just joking). If you pay attention enough you will find that every 1957 album is superlative or it comes really really close. This one belongs to the "superlative" category not to the "close" one. It's not a simple blowing session, or better it's not only a blowing session. The fact that here they had two harmonic instruments (vibes and piano) lead to a much structured material, to richer arrangements. This doesn't mean that this is an "orchestrated" album. It mantains the freshness of a blowin' date but it has some more structured themes. The players did a great job here: I find especially interesting the Idrees Sulieman's trumpet playing, very melodical but technical too. Jenkins, Waldron and Charles played equally very good solos, inspired and flashy. The music is not "cool" as the title might let you think. On the contrary it is late fifties hard bop, dense, inspired, fast at some point but anyway always intense. The opener "Staggers" tells more or less the whole story. Wonderful fugues by the soloists over an hard bop vehicle. The tune runs and than finds an eight bar pedal bass note stop and after that the run (the swim?) begins again, ... cool! Spectacular the tune at the end of the album, the touching ballad "Everything happens to me" played by the combo with Sulieman as the only soloist and lead voice. This "rounded" OJC it's surely a musthave if you like me, love those late fifties hard bop dates. Let's dive into this magic refreshing hard bop thing! Splash!!
