5 out of 5 stars PASS THE TEQUILA! AND LISTEN TO THE BRASS! ONE OF MY FAVORITES.......2007-07-12

I am repeating this story you are about to read as it gives an explanation of why I love this music so much! "The Beat of the Brass" has many of the songs on it used on the ride you are about to read about. It is one of my favorite Herb albums for that reason. That being said....Please read on.....I have fond memories of the music of Herb Alpert! I was introduced to him at an early age as my parents were fans of his records. I didn't hear much of him again until I was coming of age in Wildwood N.J. at the age of 15 when I used to party under the boardwalk with my friends and our girlfriends underneath Hunt's Pier's "El Scrambler" ride. The ride played Herb Alpert tunes non stop! I guess you could say I became a "Man" underneath that pier with my first love listening to the Tijuana Brass. Later in life in my 30's I was taking a break from playing in a band in the local bars,I became a DJ and I would mix Herb Alpert in my mixes and buy shots of Tequila for my fans! To this day when I play these songs at parties we all look for the Tequila bottle! This is a one of a kind sound and if I were stranded on a desert island with only a few albums, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass would be included in that collection! This is one of his best albums and the last great album in my opinion. I no longer own the original records so, I can not say if the new cd's are true to the originals. They sound fantastic to my ear!

5 out of 5 stars The Beat of the Brass - Herb Alpert.......2007-05-15

I've enjoyed the sound of Herb Alpert music since he started in the 1960's. This CD reissue brings back great music enjoyment memories and I throughly enjoyed the enclosed booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Herb Alpert and TJB in their prime.......2007-04-12

I was raised listening to the TJB so I am prejudiced toward their playing. That said, this is an excellent example of the "old" TJB type of playing--simple, bouncy, uplifting. The TJB have a style that is unique and I never tire of hearing them. I have been listening to this album since it was an LP, back in 1968, and I still pull it out every spring to listen to it again. Long live Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass!

5 out of 5 stars The Beat of the Brass=Bossa Nova.......2007-03-04

The Beat Of the Brass is the soundtrack for The Tijuana Brass' second television special. It features Alpert's first number one hit, as a vocalist. This Guy's In Love With You, written by Burt Bacharach, is the last track on the album.
The Beat of the Brass' opener is Monday Monday. A swinging rendition of The Mamas & The Papas hit. After this track, the album goes into a string of tunes with a bossa nova beat. Cabaret, and Panama are the high lights of the first set of brazilian influenced tunes. Talk To The Animals, a rather corny number isn't the best song on the album.
Track seven, Slick is another swinging piece, and the second string of bossa novas starts off again, until the album comes to a close with the vocal.
The original album had a gatefold cover displaying scenes from the special they did for NBC, and very nice pictures. This is a very tight album, with excellent instrumentation. A wonderful album!

5 out of 5 stars TJB '68 .......2005-10-19

Originally released in 1968, The Beat of the Brass (stereo only) might be one of the best albums from Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass. Most of this album is very entertaining. It contains such gems as Monday, Monday, A Beautiful Friend, Panama, Slick, The Robin and of course, This Guys In Love With You. This album just flows from start to finish.

01. Monday, Monday - 10/10 I love the Bob Edmondson trombone work here; in fact he is at his peak all the way through this album.

02. A Beautiful Friend - 9/10 All I can say is, really pretty. Herb's is superb on his horn, the flute work is gorgeous, and there's just the right amount of drums.

03. Cabaret - 9/10 Edmondson's trombone work and Nick Ceroli's drums make this work.

04. Panama - 10/10 Great work by Edmondson again and by the amazing Julius Wechter on the chimes.

05. Belz Mein Shtetele Belz (My Home Town) - 5/10 A punching the clock type number. It's alright.

06. Talk To The Animals - 2/10 This song worked for the TV special but, is a bit awkward on the album.

07. Slick- 10/10 I just love those chord changes in the chorus. A very cool tune.

08. She Touched Me - 9/10 This is a much underestimated little gem.

09. Thanks For The Memory - 8/10 Another good toe-taper.

10. The Robin - 9/10 - A fabulous instrumental that's tucked towards the back of the album.

11. This Guys In Love With You - 10/10 It was great in '68 and still sounds fresh to this day. This was the perfect blending of song and performance which produced the first number one single for Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

This is a classic album with great sound quality and so it gets 5 stars for the music and packaging!

The Putumayo label is known for its easily recognizable packaging and accessible collections of music from around the world. Here the label takes a broad survey of one of the most storied music towns in the world. Household names like Louis Prima, Louis Armstrong and Dr. John do their version of some Crescent City classics. Local favorites like trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and singer Topsy Chapman offer up traditional flavor as well. Music fans knowledgeable about the local scene will likely be happy about the inclusion of the swingin' December-May collaboration between trumpeters Doc Cheatham (who was 91 when he recorded "I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues") and Nicholas Payton (who has 23). Highlighting a vibrant diversity of old and new talent, this album is a musical and cultural tour of a town filled with French Creole culture, a Spanish tinge and some good old American jazz and blues. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Great sampler of N.O. music.......2007-01-12

Purchased my first copy when at the Audubon Zoo in N.O. and love the variety of music styles and musicians. Have since gotten additional CDs of works by individual musicians featured on this CD. This particular purchase (2nd copy) was to give to my brother for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of the Big Easy.......2006-05-05

This is another CD I found at my friend Regina's shop, Art and Soul. It is a collection of New Orleans style music featuring Louis Prima with "Basin Street Blues" and Louis Armstrong with
"Tin Roof Blues," and a number of other artists for a total of 11 cuts (Dr. John also performs an arrangement of Basin Street Blues). It gives you the spirit of the Big Easy. The CD starts with Kermit Ruffins' "Drop me off in New Orleans" (playing time 4:28) and ends with Gregg Stafford & Dr. Michael White in a combination, "Bye & Bye/Saints" (playing time 8:02) -the latter being the traditional end of a New Orleans style performance (it was played at the end of a friend's funeral service).

There is a small booklet inside the PC case giving informatin on the various artists (in English, Spanish, and French). As a bonus, it includes a recipe for Seafood Gumbo.

Overall it is an excellent music collection. A sticker on the outer wrapper indicated that Futumayo is giving their proceeds from the CD to New Orleans Relief.

My main objections are that the CD case does not snap closed tight, and the CD takes over your PC if you play it on a PC Media Player (also, for some reason, the sound quality was not good when I tried playing it on my PC). It played well on the CD player in my car, and on a separate CD player at my house.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the variety of artists.......2006-03-17

Great music... I have listened to a vast amount of New Orlean's numbers and find this music very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars A great introductory album!.......2005-12-17

If you're not familiar with New Orleans music, this is a great place to start. It's an authentic collection of the type of music that the city is genuinely home to (accurately, no zydeco or cajun tracks are included here, as those are imports from Southwest Louisiana) and it's a nicely rounded collection, at that.

The music of New Orleans is only one of about a million things that make the city so special, and this is a great place to get started. If you're already a die-hard New Orleans music fan, you'll probably find that you have most of these tracks in your collection anyway, but for the beginner, this collection is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant and marvelous music.......2005-09-09

I've always loved the music that flourishes in New Orleans, and this CD contains examples of some of the best music the Crescent City has always offered to the world, from such legends as Armstrong and Prima, and from wonderful current artists like Kermit Ruffins. The music may seem poignant now in the face of Hurricane Katrina, but it also contains a defiant merriness that leaves no doubt that New Orleans will recover and rise again from this disaster. Best of all, producer Putumayo has stated that all sales of this album will go to relief efforts in New Orleans -- as good a reason to own and revel in this CD as any!

5 out of 5 stars Like listening to The Mariachi Brass live in the studio.......2007-04-24

Simply outstanding in every way. The sound on this collection is perfect. I have LP copies of all the Mariachi Brass albums in stereo and mono and they sound pretty horrible. This CD was obviously mastered from the original with great care. It sounds as if you are listening to them live in the studio. I know that a lot a Baker fans have shunned The Mariachi Brass albums but I love them. Many say that he only did it for drug money and they used him as a Tijuana Brass knockoff but I disagree. Chet puts his own style into these standards and they have such warmth and feeling it gives me goosebumps. Yes, they came out at the height of the T.J.B. but I would not call it a knockoff by any means. A little pricey yes, but well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars CD coupling of first two Baker/Mariachi Brass albums.......2007-01-22

I've wanted the Mariachi Brass' first LP on CD ever since I got my first CD player in 1986. It finally arrives on this very nice twofer that also contains the second LP plus one additional track.
Chet Baker fans have dismissed these albums for decades because of their pop appeal, the fact that the Mariachi Brass was one of many brass oriented groups thrown together by a record company to capitalize on the success of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass in the mid-60s, and also because it has been widely speculated that Baker only agreed to record these LPs to get money to support his drug habit (and it was that habit that led to his untimely demise). But in my opinion, if you judge the music on it's own merits then the only question is: do you like mid-60s easy listening covers of pop hits or not? If not, pass this by -- even if you're a Chet Baker fan. If you don't like Tijuana Brass, Living Brass, Brass Ring and the like, you won't like this. If you do like this type of thing though, there's no real reason for you to dislike this. It's some very familiar hit tunes from the 60s, masterfully arranged, played by fantastic studio musicians (including members of the Wrecking Cru and some Tijuana Brass regulars) and perfectly balanced with Chet's wonderful flugal horn riding over the top of the other instruments. It sounds to me that he was having a good time recording these tracks -- I really can't believe he got nothing out of these sessions other than the money.
The standout tracks are "Flowers On The Wall", "Tequila" (which contains one of my all time favorite drum fills about 1:44 into the track), "Hot Toddy", "24 Hours From Tulsa", "Speedy Gonzalez", "La Bamba", "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'", and a rocking cover of the "Colonel Bogey March" from "The Bridge On The River Kwai". The latter wasn't included on either of the LPs featured here but has been included as a bonus track.
Overall, A TASTE OF TEQUILA is a more satisfying album than "HATS OFF" but there's nothing here that isn't enjoyable if you like 60s instrumental pop.
It should be noted that all tracks appear on this CD in mono. According to the liner notes, the stereo tapes have been lost. I've had TASTE OF TEQUILA in both mono and stereo versions for years though and always preferred the mono version, so you'll hear no complaint from me. And if there's any concern about the cover being different for this CD, the original covers (both front and back) are recreated inside the booklet.
This was the reissue of 2006 for me. I'm thrilled to have it on CD and highly recommend it to fans of brass-led 60s instrumental combos.

1 out of 5 stars You call this electronic? BULL!.......2003-01-26

I think I know what electronic classical music is, considering I made an album called Kulture. This does not sound electronic, if it does, it uses drums = not good. It sounds way too classical.

    5 out of 5 stars Energetic Band.......2006-06-30

This is a high-energy brass band based in the UK--sort of a cross in sound between Herb Alpert's old Tijuana Brass recordings and a New Orleans marching band, Quite an engaging bunch. They're virtually unknown in the U.S., though. Well recorded and uplifting; a tribute to the masterful Bollywood film composer A.R. Rahman.

    5 out of 5 stars Andy's an Eclectic Lady.......2005-04-05

Andy Creeggan had it all but he wanted more. As a founding member of The Barenaked Ladies, Andy saw the group rise from obscurity to top of the charts, but, it wasn't for him. "I wanted space for my music, my personality. I was always very interested in instrumental music and I wanted to take advantage of having been accepted at the Faculty of Music at McGill University in Montreal and really pursue theory and composition."
Along with his brother Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies bass player), Andy was brought up in a musical household in which their mother taught piano and their father played by ear. The Creeggans are a family that lives for music. As such, the two brothers also perform and record as The Brothers Creeggan, releasing three cds thus far and touring between Barenaked Ladies albums.
Andiwork II is Andy Creeggan's second solo album and the first to be nationally distributed. It is an understated and quietly complex work that showcases a young composer weaving textural ambient pieces that draw from classical, jazz, new age and even 50s exotica with an underlying dry humour that will occassionally rise to the forefront (an excerpt with Andy coaxing his dad in the studio, for example). It is cinematic in scope and breadth and yet comfortable enough to work as a late night chill album for background sonics. Featuring members of the Toronto Symphony and drummers Ian McLauchlan (Brothers Creeggan) and Mark McLean (of the acclaimed Jane Bunnett jazz ensemble).

3 out of 5 stars Good Background Music.......2004-12-29

When I got this cd, i expected it to be more like his work with Brothers Creegan, but it is 98% instrumental, sounding like he is just messing around with music. Good music, but more something that i would play in the background, while doing something else.

This is a BAAAADDDDD cd. The rythym is right on time to keep u moving. It was done with much feeling. I cant wait to hear the other one(piano and strings). If you are into the Latin genre of jazz, this is a must. If not, it will suit your tastes if u just like to dance.
