The Beat of the Brass=Bossa Nova.......2007-03-04
The Beat of the Brass' opener is Monday Monday. A swinging rendition of The Mamas & The Papas hit. After this track, the album goes into a string of tunes with a bossa nova beat. Cabaret, and Panama are the high lights of the first set of brazilian influenced tunes. Talk To The Animals, a rather corny number isn't the best song on the album.
Track seven, Slick is another swinging piece, and the second string of bossa novas starts off again, until the album comes to a close with the vocal.
The original album had a gatefold cover displaying scenes from the special they did for NBC, and very nice pictures. This is a very tight album, with excellent instrumentation. A wonderful album!

01. Monday, Monday - 10/10 I love the Bob Edmondson trombone work here; in fact he is at his peak all the way through this album.
02. A Beautiful Friend - 9/10 All I can say is, really pretty. Herb's is superb on his horn, the flute work is gorgeous, and there's just the right amount of drums.
03. Cabaret - 9/10 Edmondson's trombone work and Nick Ceroli's drums make this work.
04. Panama - 10/10 Great work by Edmondson again and by the amazing Julius Wechter on the chimes.
05. Belz Mein Shtetele Belz (My Home Town) - 5/10 A punching the clock type number. It's alright.
06. Talk To The Animals - 2/10 This song worked for the TV special but, is a bit awkward on the album.
07. Slick- 10/10 I just love those chord changes in the chorus. A very cool tune.
08. She Touched Me - 9/10 This is a much underestimated little gem.
09. Thanks For The Memory - 8/10 Another good toe-taper.
10. The Robin - 9/10 - A fabulous instrumental that's tucked towards the back of the album.
11. This Guys In Love With You - 10/10 It was great in '68 and still sounds fresh to this day. This was the perfect blending of song and performance which produced the first number one single for Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
This is a classic album with great sound quality and so it gets 5 stars for the music and packaging!

The Putumayo label is known for its easily recognizable packaging and accessible collections of music from around the world. Here the label takes a broad survey of one of the most storied music towns in the world. Household names like Louis Prima, Louis Armstrong and Dr. John do their version of some Crescent City classics. Local favorites like trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and singer Topsy Chapman offer up traditional flavor as well. Music fans knowledgeable about the local scene will likely be happy about the inclusion of the swingin' December-May collaboration between trumpeters Doc Cheatham (who was 91 when he recorded "I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues") and Nicholas Payton (who has 23). Highlighting a vibrant diversity of old and new talent, this album is a musical and cultural tour of a town filled with French Creole culture, a Spanish tinge and some good old American jazz and blues. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:
Great sampler of N.O. music.......2007-01-12
Memories of the Big Easy.......2006-05-05
"Tin Roof Blues," and a number of other artists for a total of 11 cuts (Dr. John also performs an arrangement of Basin Street Blues). It gives you the spirit of the Big Easy. The CD starts with Kermit Ruffins' "Drop me off in New Orleans" (playing time 4:28) and ends with Gregg Stafford & Dr. Michael White in a combination, "Bye & Bye/Saints" (playing time 8:02) -the latter being the traditional end of a New Orleans style performance (it was played at the end of a friend's funeral service).
There is a small booklet inside the PC case giving informatin on the various artists (in English, Spanish, and French). As a bonus, it includes a recipe for Seafood Gumbo.
Overall it is an excellent music collection. A sticker on the outer wrapper indicated that Futumayo is giving their proceeds from the CD to New Orleans Relief.
My main objections are that the CD case does not snap closed tight, and the CD takes over your PC if you play it on a PC Media Player (also, for some reason, the sound quality was not good when I tried playing it on my PC). It played well on the CD player in my car, and on a separate CD player at my house.
Enjoyed the variety of artists.......2006-03-17
A great introductory album!.......2005-12-17
The music of New Orleans is only one of about a million things that make the city so special, and this is a great place to get started. If you're already a die-hard New Orleans music fan, you'll probably find that you have most of these tracks in your collection anyway, but for the beginner, this collection is perfect.
Poignant and marvelous music.......2005-09-09

Like listening to The Mariachi Brass live in the studio.......2007-04-24
CD coupling of first two Baker/Mariachi Brass albums.......2007-01-22
Chet Baker fans have dismissed these albums for decades because of their pop appeal, the fact that the Mariachi Brass was one of many brass oriented groups thrown together by a record company to capitalize on the success of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass in the mid-60s, and also because it has been widely speculated that Baker only agreed to record these LPs to get money to support his drug habit (and it was that habit that led to his untimely demise). But in my opinion, if you judge the music on it's own merits then the only question is: do you like mid-60s easy listening covers of pop hits or not? If not, pass this by -- even if you're a Chet Baker fan. If you don't like Tijuana Brass, Living Brass, Brass Ring and the like, you won't like this. If you do like this type of thing though, there's no real reason for you to dislike this. It's some very familiar hit tunes from the 60s, masterfully arranged, played by fantastic studio musicians (including members of the Wrecking Cru and some Tijuana Brass regulars) and perfectly balanced with Chet's wonderful flugal horn riding over the top of the other instruments. It sounds to me that he was having a good time recording these tracks -- I really can't believe he got nothing out of these sessions other than the money.
The standout tracks are "Flowers On The Wall", "Tequila" (which contains one of my all time favorite drum fills about 1:44 into the track), "Hot Toddy", "24 Hours From Tulsa", "Speedy Gonzalez", "La Bamba", "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'", and a rocking cover of the "Colonel Bogey March" from "The Bridge On The River Kwai". The latter wasn't included on either of the LPs featured here but has been included as a bonus track.
Overall, A TASTE OF TEQUILA is a more satisfying album than "HATS OFF" but there's nothing here that isn't enjoyable if you like 60s instrumental pop.
It should be noted that all tracks appear on this CD in mono. According to the liner notes, the stereo tapes have been lost. I've had TASTE OF TEQUILA in both mono and stereo versions for years though and always preferred the mono version, so you'll hear no complaint from me. And if there's any concern about the cover being different for this CD, the original covers (both front and back) are recreated inside the booklet.
This was the reissue of 2006 for me. I'm thrilled to have it on CD and highly recommend it to fans of brass-led 60s instrumental combos.

Andy's an Eclectic Lady.......2005-04-05
Along with his brother Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies bass player), Andy was brought up in a musical household in which their mother taught piano and their father played by ear. The Creeggans are a family that lives for music. As such, the two brothers also perform and record as The Brothers Creeggan, releasing three cds thus far and touring between Barenaked Ladies albums.
Andiwork II is Andy Creeggan's second solo album and the first to be nationally distributed. It is an understated and quietly complex work that showcases a young composer weaving textural ambient pieces that draw from classical, jazz, new age and even 50s exotica with an underlying dry humour that will occassionally rise to the forefront (an excerpt with Andy coaxing his dad in the studio, for example). It is cinematic in scope and breadth and yet comfortable enough to work as a late night chill album for background sonics. Featuring members of the Toronto Symphony and drummers Ian McLauchlan (Brothers Creeggan) and Mark McLean (of the acclaimed Jane Bunnett jazz ensemble).
