Marcus Miller is foremost known as a Grammy-winning bass player, but as he proves on Silver Rain, Miller is equally formidable as an arranger. Taking songs from a disparate mix of artists that includes Stevie Wonder, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Winter, Beethoven and Prince, Millers skills are in almost embarrassing abundance here. On Edgar Winters 70s rock jam "Frankenstein", his band (including the likes of Kirk Whalum on tenor and Kenny Garret on alto) flat out wails, but Millers slapping bass keeps the groove completely locked down. In contrast, his take on Beethovens "Moonlight Sonata" sets the stage for Millers mellow-groove skills while the cover of Stevie Wonders "Boogie On Reggae a Woman" is Miller at his intricate, funky best. On Princes "Girls & Boys", Macy Gray adds her swooping, sensual vocals while Eric Clapton sits in on the title track. Clocking in at around 75 minutes, this CD is full to bursting, but whats striking here is not the quantity, but the quality. Miller is able to effortlessly make this material his own; moreover he is able to take an impossibly diverse set of songs and construct an album with real cohesion and flow. There is a lot happening on this album, as multi-instrumentalist Miller swaps instruments, moods and musicians from tune to tune, to his credit, however, he never loses the trail. The result is an extremely enjoyable album and an apt platform for Millers many, many talents. --Steve Duda

Marcus - World's Greatest Bassist!.......2006-06-30
This album is really fun. It's open to both older folks like me and the up and coming younger musicians. Marcus took something Miles said to heart. "Incorporate the popular music of the day." to paraphrase. Miles always gave room to what was happening in the world, instead of ignoring it. He used it and recognized and built on it. And he listened.
I have read some critical remarks here; if I have any, it's only that Marcus has such a ear for detail; the quality of this recording is a phenom; he's done what he's always done in the studio; demand absolute sonic perfection. And that's cool. It's really nice to hear the master at work.
But what will really be fun, is to hear this work live! You don't really hear what Marcus is capable of, you don't really respect the raw power and the absolute intensity of his energy until you see him play live. It will alter your life and leave you in awe.. because these guys would have been practicing the material on tour for several weeks, and be in rare form, and no holding back like they do in the studio to achieve that sonic perfection. It would leave you on the floor, gasping for air..
Please Marcus, do a live album!!!

So close to what it should be and yet so far.......2005-12-12
Well, my deductive logic overlooked one fact: not everyone takes the concept of "tribute" in the same way. Some take considerable license with the original artist's work. This album does that more than many. If the problem had stopped there, this could have been a good album anyway. Not so.
First, the musicians are very good ones, but the arrangements (even when respectful) are mediocre at best. (I kept thinking, "Hey, I could do better than that with my own MIDI arrangements. In fact, I have done better than that!" And if I can say that as a amateur songwriter, hopefully accurately, then there's something seriously wrong with the "pros".) Second, with some tracks (above all the cover of "A Day Without Rain"), the spirit and sometimes the form of the original song is distorted almost or even entirely beyond recognition.
In short, Enya fans should avoid this album like the plague. The producers are to be commended for not simply making a pastiche of Enya's music, but the Taliesin Orchetra did a much better (if still not perfect) effort in that direction. I'd like to be merciful and give this album a 3, but I can't; what it does to "A Day Without Rain" alone is simply inexcusible.

Album Description
Spirit of the Healing Waters - On the edge of the earth where the land meets the sea, we can embrace the power of the healing waters. And from a hidden source that pours up through the surface of the land - from the bellows below - bringing forth nourishment of minerals and other healing properties for those who drink and bath. Water is the purity and nourishment that covers three quarters of this earth. It is the grace and presence, the power of the origin - as it said that life itself originated in the seas. Even the Romans understood the power of the healing waters from deep within the mountains, long before the era of wellness and beauty. Because the people were unable to understand the effects of the thermal water, it was long said to have mystic powers.

Album Description
The songs for voice and piano by George Walker are among the finest written by an American composer and are "as outstanding as they are varied" according to Fanfare Magazine. Modus for Chamber Ensemble was commissioned by the Cygnus Ensemble. It received its premiere in New York in March, 2001. The four movements are characterized by recurring motives and highly rhythmical sections of great intensity. The title, Modus, refers to the elegant techniques used to transform and unify the movements. The Prayer for Organ was composed in 1996, 50 years after Walker's famous Lyric for Strings, a memorial to his grandmother, was written. The similarity between these two works lies in the use of contrapuntal techniques. The Improvisation on St. Theodulph is a fantasia on the melody stated before the work begins. The Prayer and the Improvisation were commissioned by the regional chapter of the American Guild of Organists in Washington, D.C. Spires was commissioned for performance by Dr. Mickey Thomas Terry at the Convention in Denver of the National Chapter of the American Guild of Organists in 1998.
