Silver Rain

Editorial Reviews

Marcus Miller is foremost known as a Grammy-winning bass player, but as he proves on Silver Rain, Miller is equally formidable as an arranger. Taking songs from a disparate mix of artists that includes Stevie Wonder, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Winter, Beethoven and Prince, Miller’s skills are in almost embarrassing abundance here. On Edgar Winter’s 70s rock jam "Frankenstein", his band (including the likes of Kirk Whalum on tenor and Kenny Garret on alto) flat out wails, but Miller’s slapping bass keeps the groove completely locked down. In contrast, his take on Beethoven’s "Moonlight Sonata" sets the stage for Miller’s mellow-groove skills while the cover of Stevie Wonder’s "Boogie On Reggae a Woman" is Miller at his intricate, funky best. On Prince’s "Girls & Boys", Macy Gray adds her swooping, sensual vocals while Eric Clapton sits in on the title track. Clocking in at around 75 minutes, this CD is full to bursting, but what’s striking here is not the quantity, but the quality. Miller is able to effortlessly make this material his own; moreover he is able to take an impossibly diverse set of songs and construct an album with real cohesion and flow. There is a lot happening on this album, as multi-instrumentalist Miller swaps instruments, moods and musicians from tune to tune, to his credit, however, he never loses the trail. The result is an extremely enjoyable album and an apt platform for Miller’s many, many talents. --Steve Duda

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-06-01

Great album with some very likeable tunes. As a bass player I love listening to it, great grooves and playing from a true master. Though, my girlfriend even enjoys the music on this album. If you play bass, get it! If not, get it anyway.

4 out of 5 stars The marcus groove still grooves.......2006-08-08

From the man who gave us Boomerang and Tutu "Silver Rain" is a must have!! A good investement on my part. Cuts Silver Rain And Boys and Girls are way back yonder funk!!!

5 out of 5 stars Marcus - World's Greatest Bassist!.......2006-06-30

It's easy to critisize, much harder to actually create..Marcus is a true creator and has been for so many years now. If you know his history, you know how powerful a producer he is, with the likes of Miles and Sanborn.

This album is really fun. It's open to both older folks like me and the up and coming younger musicians. Marcus took something Miles said to heart. "Incorporate the popular music of the day." to paraphrase. Miles always gave room to what was happening in the world, instead of ignoring it. He used it and recognized and built on it. And he listened.

I have read some critical remarks here; if I have any, it's only that Marcus has such a ear for detail; the quality of this recording is a phenom; he's done what he's always done in the studio; demand absolute sonic perfection. And that's cool. It's really nice to hear the master at work.

But what will really be fun, is to hear this work live! You don't really hear what Marcus is capable of, you don't really respect the raw power and the absolute intensity of his energy until you see him play live. It will alter your life and leave you in awe.. because these guys would have been practicing the material on tour for several weeks, and be in rare form, and no holding back like they do in the studio to achieve that sonic perfection. It would leave you on the floor, gasping for air..

Please Marcus, do a live album!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Soul.......2006-05-14

Marcus Miller's album Silver Rain is simply superb. The album showcases Marcus' skill with both the bass guitar and the bass clarinet. The album contains some bold covers: Edgar Winter's Frankenstein (featuring Kirk Whalum on sax), Stevie Wonder's "Boogie on Reggae Woman", Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady", Luther Vandross' "If Only For One Night". Check out Marcus's surprising versions of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and Jimi Hendrix's "Power of Soul". The latter is outstanding. My personal favorties: La Vilette, featuring the vocals of Lalah Hathaway and Girls and Boys featuring Macy Gray. Give this album your undivided attention. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2006-04-21

I never wanted to own any Marcus MIller album before but I decided to buy this one today, and I do not regret. However mediocre it may seem at the first listening, the more you listen to it the more aspects you discover, and it reveals plenty of rythming, harmony, mellowness, nostalgy and mood. Recommend!

2 out of 5 stars So close to what it should be and yet so far.......2005-12-12

I had high hopes when I received The String Quartet Tribute to Enya: Dreams. I enjoy practically everything Enya's ever done; I enjoy string quartets, depending on what they play and how well they play it; Enya uses synthetic and occasionally real stringed instruments on her albums; and a "tribute" album by a real string quartet ought to be respectful of Enya's music. How could I lose?

Well, my deductive logic overlooked one fact: not everyone takes the concept of "tribute" in the same way. Some take considerable license with the original artist's work. This album does that more than many. If the problem had stopped there, this could have been a good album anyway. Not so.

First, the musicians are very good ones, but the arrangements (even when respectful) are mediocre at best. (I kept thinking, "Hey, I could do better than that with my own MIDI arrangements. In fact, I have done better than that!" And if I can say that as a amateur songwriter, hopefully accurately, then there's something seriously wrong with the "pros".) Second, with some tracks (above all the cover of "A Day Without Rain"), the spirit and sometimes the form of the original song is distorted almost or even entirely beyond recognition.

In short, Enya fans should avoid this album like the plague. The producers are to be commended for not simply making a pastiche of Enya's music, but the Taliesin Orchetra did a much better (if still not perfect) effort in that direction. I'd like to be merciful and give this album a 3, but I can't; what it does to "A Day Without Rain" alone is simply inexcusible.

I reccomend this album for family gatherings or as background music at meetings, of all places.

5 out of 5 stars "Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18

"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!

    5 out of 5 stars A Gem!.......2002-10-17

This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

Spirit of the Healing Waters - On the edge of the earth where the land meets the sea, we can embrace the power of the healing waters. And from a hidden source that pours up through the surface of the land - from the bellows below - bringing forth nourishment of minerals and other healing properties for those who drink and bath. Water is the purity and nourishment that covers three quarters of this earth. It is the grace and presence, the power of the origin - as it said that life itself originated in the seas. Even the Romans understood the power of the healing waters from deep within the mountains, long before the era of wellness and beauty. Because the people were unable to understand the effects of the thermal water, it was long said to have mystic powers.

        Album Description

The songs for voice and piano by George Walker are among the finest written by an American composer and are "as outstanding as they are varied" according to Fanfare Magazine. Modus for Chamber Ensemble was commissioned by the Cygnus Ensemble. It received its premiere in New York in March, 2001. The four movements are characterized by recurring motives and highly rhythmical sections of great intensity. The title, Modus, refers to the elegant techniques used to transform and unify the movements. The Prayer for Organ was composed in 1996, 50 years after Walker's famous Lyric for Strings, a memorial to his grandmother, was written. The similarity between these two works lies in the use of contrapuntal techniques. The Improvisation on St. Theodulph is a fantasia on the melody stated before the work begins. The Prayer and the Improvisation were commissioned by the regional chapter of the American Guild of Organists in Washington, D.C. Spires was commissioned for performance by Dr. Mickey Thomas Terry at the Convention in Denver of the National Chapter of the American Guild of Organists in 1998.

5 out of 5 stars DONE IT AGAIN.......2005-04-12

Miller is not only one of the best bass players of all time ,but a great producer from miles davis to joe sample to sanborn makeing them all sound better, he puts his signiture on all modern jazz with stupid bass grooves and excellent prodution. Silver Rain has 4-6 great tracks buy it ,if you like hard driveing bass with purpose you gotta get this.......
