Smooth Jazz.......2007-06-20

I purchased this album on a whim as you do sometimes sight unseen. Can't say that I had even heard of Art Blakey or the track Moanin'. Guess some jazz enthusiasts might shudder in horror at that admission. Never the less I put it on when I picked it up from the mail and had a listen. This is a fantastic recording and the music is smooth and classy from the start to the finish. I think that this album will become one of my favourite albums as it gets better each time I hear it.

An Outstanding Drummer.......2007-06-18

I have always thought of Jazz as a part of music that always seemed tucked away in the underground. I mean, even though Musicians like Miles Davis and John Coltrane had sold millions of records, it still was without the help of FM radio play. I still believe this today, even though we have "light jazz" stations, they are nothing more then glorified elevator music. Art Blakey might not with the same populatiry of Coltrane and Davis, but he still wails, and believe me this guy in an amazing drummer. Its funny when you think of all the drummers from all different generes of music that have paved the way of rock of roll such as Neil Peart of Rush, Bonzo from Zepplin, Moon from The Who, and to the more underground drummers of Thrash/Death Metal such as Lombardo from Slayer, Flo Mourier from Cyrotopsy, and Ulrich from Metallica, but way before these drummers there were Jazz drummers who could tear the skin off the drum. Blakey is one of them. The Jazz Messengers are a tight knit group on their own, but if you are a fan of rock or metal, listen to what Blakey is doing. Sound Familer? I hear such influence epsically in Death Metal, because even though Metal uses alot of Double Bass (which Jazz typically avoids) the speed of jazz drummer is insane, sometimes even a bit faster with the way it swings then some of faster Death Metal band (does it suprise you that Flo Mourier of Cryotopsy, easily the best drummer in Death Metal, is trained with a jazz background) I cant stress enough that if you arent a jazz fan, then you should really be getting into this Music, and Blakey is a great place to start. You wont hear shredding guitar work and gutteral vocal here, but you will hear some great musical ablity that seemed light years ahead of its time. ENJOY

October 30, 1958. Those great days at the Rudy Van Gelder studio in his parents living room in Hackenack, New Jersey. This is ESSENTIAL JAZZ. So many people have given this a 5 star review, so I guess there isn't much more I can say about it. But Lee Morgan on trumpet and BENNY GOLSON on Tenor Sax will blow you away. Blakey of course is the KING as far as I'm concerned. I rarely missed the gigs he did at the Village Vanguard in the Seventies. Everyone plays better when Blakey is pushing them. Bobby Timmons is so great, and the great song "MOANIN'" by Timmons, really shines on here. 4 cuts written by Golson, the whole CD is up there with the greatest. This is ESSENTIAL jazz at its best.

From the mid-1950s until the famous drummer's death in 1990, Art Blakey's "Jazz Messengers" was the trade name of various groups of musicians that worked and recorded under Blakey's leadership. Two tracks on this 1958 recording went on to become classic Blakey anthems, "Moanin'" and "Blues March". Each incarnation of the Jazz Messengers has played these two tunes, and countless jazz musicians consider them to be standards.

This package combines blues giant Howlin' Wolf's first two albums, themselves compilations of his singles released between 1951 and 1962. An easy must-have.......2007-03-25

A few songs from Moanin' in the Moonlight (Moanin' for My Baby, All Night Boogie, Forty-Four, Baby How Long) aren't exactly all that great, but the rest makes up for it. This is basically a set of blues classics, in fact if Killin' Floor and Sittin' on Top of the World were included you'd think it was a very in-depth best-of. Just look at how many legendary musicians have covered (or ripped off, in Led Zeppelin's case) some of these songs: The Red Rooster, Spoonful, Wang Dang Doodle, Goin' Down Slow, Back Door Man, How Many More Years, Who's Been Talkin'? Smokestack Lightin', Evil, Tell Me or I Asked Her for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline). Most artists are lucky to have two or three legendary songs. Wolf has eleven on this album alone, and this one doesn't even have Killin' Floor, Sittin' on Top of the World or I Ain't Superstitious, also part of legend. But I digress. These original recordings, taken from the old '45s rather than being the remakes spread across his career, pound any cover you can imagine into all hell. Okay, maybe Cream's version of Spoonful beats the original. Maybe not. It's a tough call. But that's beside the point.
Okay, blues fans withuut this are simply doing themselves a disservice. But a rock or soul fan looking to trace the music's roots who doesn't own a copy of Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight is also shooting themselves in the foot. Actually, so is anybody who enjoys good music. Plain and simple.

Doesn't Get Any Better.......2006-10-04

My friends, this is the real deal, it just doesn't get any better than this. This is Howlin' Wolf at his gritty, slashin', terrifyin' best, and just about nothing matches the greatness and intensity of the Wolf at his best. Nearly every track is a classic and all of them are superb. "Red Rooster" "Wang Dang Doodle" "Spoonful" "Back Door Man" "Evil" "I Asked For Water..." are among the most well known clasics in the entire genre, but every track is top notch. His voice was truly original (even tho Capt. Beefheart managed to imitate it uncannily well) and likely shocked the pants off the first to hear him. This is such down and dirty, greasy, slicin' blues that it's impossible to think of it as being as "old" as it is. The Wolf was so far ahead of his time that time still hasn't caught up. Though he's had many admirers among rock stars, such as the Stones, he's really never quite received the fame and recognition that he deserves for having been such a genius. THe musicians are wonderful, Hubert Sumlin may be the nastiest blues guitarist ever to grace a track, but it is the monumental, legendary, godlike Wolf who stands out the most.

Amazing music, terrible packaging........2006-02-07

Let's get my only gripes out of the way now--a drunk monkey could've come up with better packaging than what comes with this 2-albums-in-one set. The cover art is sloppily integrated and cheap, the albums are oddly in reverse chronological order (the self-titled album was released in 1962, Moanin' In The Moonlight in 1959), the liner notes are minimal given Chester Burnett A.K.A. Howlin' Wolf's importance to modern blues and the sound quality is so-so (Chess offers a remastered single disc titled His Best, if this bothers you). They even left off a track due to what they claim is CD length limitations, which is B.S. since the whole thing is under 70 minutes and most of the existing tracks are under three. Who are they trying to kid?

Other than that, this is SEMINAL electric blues from one of the best in the business. Wolf is quite simply the finest blues vocalist ever--his gravelly, soulful, cavernous growl is unmistakable and awesome, befitting a man of such huge girth and power (listen to the microphone nearly detonate on the beginning of Moanin' In The Moonlight from trying to handle his voice). His lyrics exude passion and grit, but not without a touch of humor--this is blues to party to. The band behind him is equally potent, with Hubert Sumlin's iconic riffs and Willie Dixon's bass playing and songwriting acumen.

Every song from the self-titled is a classic--the boogie-blues of Shake For Me, innuendo-drenched Little Red Rooster, party stomper Wang Dang Doodle, slow-burning and funny Goin' Down Slow, and the catchy backbeat of Down From The Bottom being my favorites. Moanin' In The Moonlight isn't quite as memorable, but it too has its share of historical blues singles such as How Many More Years, Smokestack Lightnin', Forty Four, and the Dixon-penned Evil.

This is the real stuff, and an essential buy. Let's just hope this package gets updated for a new generation.

Essential Wolf.......2004-11-25

This is the most essential single Howlin' Wolf CD there could possibly be and would make an excellent first purchase for a Howlin' Wolf novice. It comprises The Wolf's first two long-player releases, both what we would now regard as compilations, and was put out by Chess/MCA in 1986.
Moanin' In The Moonlight came out in America in 1959 and was made up of 12 selected A-sides and B-sides from the many 78's he released between 1951 and 1958, all monaural, including such classics as Smokestack Lightnin' and I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline). The LP kicks off with Moanin' At Midnight and How Many More Years, comprising both sides of his first Chess single, recorded in Memphis by Sam Phillips at what would become the Sun studios, long before Howlin' Wolf moved to Chicago. The songs on this LP are among the most elemental, eerie and powerful pieces of music ever committed to tape.
Equally compelling is the second collection, usually known as the Rocking Chair album, released in the US in January 1962, when the genre was presented as the root of "Music Americana". It contained 3 previously unreleased songs recorded between May and December 1961, and 9 that were on 45's released in 1960 and 1961 (though two were recorded in 1957), but all in stereo.
Famous songs include The Red Rooster, Wang Dang Doodle, Back Door Man and the Wolf's famous variation of Spoonful (he would have learned the original, fairly dissimilar Spoonful Blues from Charlie Patton) - though all staple fare for a million blues and rock bands ever since, none could match the intensity and darkness of these originals (although the Rolling Stones' Little Red Rooster came close). Most were written by Willie Dixon, who plays bass throughout, though there are a couple credited to Howlin' Wolf and a cover of St Louis Jimmy Oden's Goin' Down Slow, on which, unusually, the recitation is spoken by Willie Dixon.
The division of stereo and mono recordings is not declared anywhere on the CD and seems somewhat arbitrary, especially since Who's Been Talkin' (stereo), Tell Me (stereo) and Somebody In My Home (mono) were all recorded on 24 June 1957.
A note in the sleeve reads, "In our effort to bring you the originals for the cost of a single CD, we have omitted one selection due to the length of the combined original albums." Given the playing time of 66 minutes this is a very irritating message, but in my quest to discover the identity of the missing selection, after consulting several online discographies as far as I can tell it seems that all tracks are present and correct

..and that's just how important this album is to me and should be to you. Time has only made it more clear that THIS is the root from which rock 'n roll sprang. This man was eccentric in an era where eccentricity of any kind was frowned upon. Just listen to that voice. What can be more rock 'n roll than that?? Pure emotion- gravel- grit- life. You gotta respect the Wolf!!!!!!

The trademark qualities of a Robert Shaw-trained chorus included perfect tonal blend and balance, expressive phrasing, and superb tuning. As an interpreter, Shaw hewed to the middle road, steering clear of eccentricities and honoring the composer's intentions. On this tribute disc, we hear these virtues coalesce in works such as Poulenc's austere Christmas hymn "O magnum mysterium," one of three settings of the text here. Shaw was at his best in works whose fervent spirituality he shared, and the selection from Rachmaninov's Vespers, with its repeated alleluias, is a highlight, both radiant and passionate. But then, virtually everything here is a highlight: the Schubert part song done to a turn with soft singing projected in rounded tones; the curve of "Wondrous Love"'s melody perfectly traced; and "Amazing Grace" in Shaw's arrangement all the more moving for its calm dignity. The longest piece, Górecki's Marian hymn "Totus tuus," is otherworldly in an enthralled reading that never loses focus. Like all of Shaw's Telarc recordings, the sonics are first-class. --Dan Davis

The only part of the CD I would quibble with is the selection from Rachmaninov's Vespers, but I'm really lucky and have heard that performed live several times and heard multiple recordings, and decided on one that I liked best early on.

If you aren't blown away by the performance of the Tallis, you'll probably still cry when you hear the Lauridsen later in the CD. One thing about this CD is that after hearing it, my standard for what I could expect in a recording became a lot higher.

When Robert Shaw retired in 1988 as Conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra he returned to the conducting of unaccompanied choral music, that he had been involved with in the Robert Shaw Chorale in the 1950's and early 60's.
The selections on this disc are taken from several different Telarc recordings that were made at summer festivals he directed during the last decade of his life.
The Poulenc "O Magnum Mysterium" is one of the four motets on a Christmas album made in 1989. "Wondrous Love", "Amazing Grace", and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Moanin' Dove" are from the collection of 'American Hymns and Spirituals', performed and recorded in 1992. Gorecki's motet "Totus Tuus" appeared on 'Evocation of the Spirit' recorded in 1994.
In the Summer of 1989, the first year of Shaw's choral festivals in France yielded an impressive array of unaccompanied music which included Rachmaninoff's 'Vespers' or 'All Night Vigil', Op.37, the 2 Thomas Tallis pieces and the two in Latin by Vittoria.
"Der Entfernten" comes from a collection of 'Schubert Songs' for Male Chorus taped in the Summer of 1992. Morton Luridsen's 'O magnum mysterium', the most recent composition on this disc as well as the last recorded (1997), was included on 'A Robert Shaw Christmas'.
It is interesting to note that there are no less than three settings of the anonymous medieval text "O Magnum Mysterium". Shaw, a deeply spiritual man, often lamented about the commercialism that had pervaded the celebraton of the American Christmas. He retained a sincere awe for the miraculous details of the Nativity story, and it was natural that he should return again to music having this text, with its wondrous mixture of the homespun and the mystical, the lowly and the most high.

This is a truly interesting variety of compositions featuring a diversified group of fine composers!!!!.Any choral group that Shaw conducted always sang with much emotion and always great skill. There is never a 'ragged' entrance OR exit; there is never poor balance between the voices; the diction is crisp and clear and never 'muddied'; and the sound is ethereally beautiful. I would have liked to know who the personnel were in each of his 2 groups on this disc, but they were not listed, so I guess I never will know. Just a fabulous recording!!!!!

I'd swear that Robert Shaw must have visited heaven and come back to write his rendition of O Magnum Mysterium (particularly track #5 with the chamber singers). It's my favorite classical piece, especially among choral works. I'd love to be in a great gothic cathedral like Notre Dame or Cologne and hear this piece. Even though you'll likely only be hearing this recording through your headphones in your room, it'll take you to the cathedrals and heaven itself.

I read somewhere that Robert Shaw was deeply religious/spiritual. I have no reason to doubt this...his faith shines through on this disk. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

In my choir at school, we are singing O Magnum Mysterium; I can't help from sinking into its soft harmonies. How to describe this feeling?--each bar more poignant than the last; dynamically profound; crystal clear tone; that clash between tenors in the chorus...it makes me believe in love and god all at once! Spectacular, this CD is--how lucky I am to have found it. Recommended to anyone with hearing.

Maybe ten people still alive know who Bobby Timmons is, but for you ten here is an excellent single disc compilation of Bobby's best material. "This Here" has to be the deepest groove ever dug. Quite an amazing piano player.

Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27

This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!

Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23

Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.

A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03

Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.

I was disappointed. I thought I would be getting a CD of full length themes from his movies but the CD is exactly what it says. It is from the actual films, in sections and pieces. I can't say it was misrepresented so I guess I was at fault. But I am sorry I bought it.

Simply the original.......2007-06-19

As the previous reviewer rightly pointed out, these are the original recordings from the era the films were made. And yes, the sound is completely different from what we are used to hear when we are turning the CD player on: it's mono, it's partially unsteady and some of the pieces suddenly fade. BUT, it's the REAL thing and it transports the charms and the charisma, inherent to the original ONLY.
Those who prefer the flawless technical perfection of a re-recording better should save their money. But for those who love the movies and their genuine sound, should be perfectly pleased with this release.

most of the tracks on this cd are available elsewhere, but what prompts me to give this a low review is the quality of the recording. some of them sound like they were taped off of a tv set showing a warbly print. you can do better elsewhere.

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

This is truly one of the great classics of hard bop, with drummer Art Blakey leading arguably his greatest Jazz Messengers lineup through a driving program that never lets up. Tenor saxophonist Benny Golson (whose composition "Along Came Betty" is heard here, subsequently becoming a jazz classic), brilliant trumpeter Lee Morgan, and funky pianist Bobby Timmons (who wrote the hit title cut) each take some of the best solos of their great careers, and Blakey was never greater. No jazz record collection should be without this disc. It remains one of the premier items in Blue Note's catalog, and rightfully so. --Skip Heller

A Beginning.......2006-07-03

This was my introduction to Bu in my college days, and in retrospect it barely scratches the surface. For a follow-up, pick up the eponymous collection on Columbia with Hank Mobley and Donald Byrd. Also, be certain your Blakey collection generously represents, among trumpet players, Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham, Freddie Hubbard, and Bill Hardman (not to mention Valery Ponomarev, Wynton Marsalis, and Terrence Blanchard). As for saxophonists, Golson, despite his compositional talents, is one of the lesser players to occupy that spot in a Blakey ensemble. Even when it comes to composers, if there's a "genius" among the Blakey contributors, it's Walter Davis, Jr. "Jodie," "Ronnie's a Dynamite Lady," "Backgammon," "Uranus," "Gypsy Folk Tales," "Scorpio Rises"--these are all Davis compositions that Blakey saw fit to record--challenging, adventurous material that places Blakey in the forefront of modern, progressive music, a musicmaker beyond category as opposed to being simply leader of jazz' foremost "hard bop" ensemble.

It's not easy to find, but look for another "Moanin'" on Laserlight. Recorded live, it features Hardman playing the title song like there was no tomorrow along with a cadenza on "Blue Moon" that Freddie, who introduced the tune on "3 Blind Mice," could have played only in his dreams. Another good introduction to Hardman's trumpet artistry is the Italian LP, "Art's Break," on which Art stops the band while Bill plays for half a dozen choruses unaccompanied.

That's jazz. That's the inexhaustible world of Art Blakey.

A Classic - Belongs In Every Collection.......2004-08-22

Straight Ahead Jazz! If you enjoy 1950s and early 60s jazz, just buy it.

My favorite tracks are:
Moanin' - both versions are good
Come Rain or Come Shine - an old standby, well executed
Drum Thunder Suite - in case you'd forgotten this was an Art Blakey disc; Drum Thunder is the best IMHO.

The others are all good, but these are especially good. I didn't think that the Warm-Up and Dialogue added too much, but some may enjoy the versimilitude. Since this is a Rudy Van Gelder re-issue, I guess it's appropriate. And, while I haven't listened to all of them, I think the sound quality on this is better than some of the RVG Blue Note re-issues.

I have no qualms about giving this one Five Stars!

You know how when you buy speakers, the number one rule is "how does it sound?"

I don't know anything about Jazz, really. I surf the Amazon recommendations & reviews, get friends' top tens. And then the bottom line is simply "how does it sound?"

This record is certainly one the absolute best. I just smile and groove on it from start to finish.

Jazz Messenger was a name appropos for Art Blakey.......2000-03-30

He truly was a "Messenger" for the music. He loved, taught and "sold" jazz music. Many a young mind has been turned onto jazz after listening to Art Blakey's great ensembles...and this grouping was his best (in my opinion). If you are a person who loves jazz and you don't own this album, shame on you.

Bobby Timmons classic "Moanin'" starts the set, and timeless other great numbers like Benny Golson's great triage "Along Came Betty", "Blues March" & the incredible "Drum Thunder Suite" have been known to mesmerize and sway even the most devout anti-jazz critic. The unbelievable front line of jazz giants Golson, Timmons and Lee Morgan, and their nimble interplay, set the mood for the the vital rhythms of drummer Blakey and bassist Jymie Merritt.

This WILL be one of your favorite all time albums...it is high on my list....and has been since I bought the monophonic LP version in 1959. Yes, I do have the Stereo CD too.

By the way, Leonard Feather's liner notes alone, are worth the price of of this gem.

A cornerstone of jazz music! There should be an option to give 6 stars. 50's blue-note super record! Energy, power, talent, fun! A pure listening pleasure. I could listen to Moanin' once, twice..., 100 times without getting stuffed. So, buy that great album today - I promise - you will enjoy listening it for the rest of your live!

Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.
