What separates White from the crowded pack of smooth-jazz guitarists is his exquisite sense of melody. That skill is on full display on Confidential, easily the most well-rounded album of White's career. Among the highpoints here is the return of vocalist Christopher Cross, who shines on a cover of Brenda Russell's light bossa nova tune, "She's in Love." Other guests include pianist Brian Culbertson, who offers a Bob James-like solo on the title track, trumpeter Chris Botti ("Stormfront"), and saxophonist Mindi Abair, who graces "Are You Mine." But it's White's lines that soar throughout, like melodies in search of words. --Mark Ruffin

    Product Description

Road Kill Stew and Other News is a collaboration between the WAMMIE-award (Washington, DC's Grammies)winning Honky Tonk Confidential and CBS News chief Washington correspondent and Face the Nation anchor Bob Schieffer. Bob wrote the lyrics to four of the songs, including the hilarious "TV Anchorman," which he performs as a talking blues tune. HTC also wrote the music to Bob's "Hard Choices," a song of loss and longing from a woman's point of view; the rollicking rock tune "Little Lulu and Sister Hot Stuff," and "Long Shot Love," which is about a love that's lasted many years, despite the odds. The other songs on the CD are HTC s usual eclectic blend of hard core country, western swing, hillbilly boogie, and rockabilly. Diana Quinn sings the title cut, Road Kill Stew, a delicious, recipe with a swampy taste. Mike Woods sings the obscure Hangover Boogie, as well as the country classic Statue of a Fool. Mike also tears it up on the instrumental, Guitar Boogie. Diana and Lisa Ann Wright wrote A Girl Named Dick, which is a parody of Johnny Cash s A Boy Named Sue. Bob wraps it up with a cameo performance on a not-so-hidden track, a vintage recording that we unearthed from the vaults of WHTC, Momma s Cow.

4 out of 5 stars Great work from Peter White.......2006-01-18

I hadn't kept up with Peter White's releases for a while so added "Confidential" to my Christmas wish list. This is an excellent disc, in my opinion his best yet. I haven't been able to displace it from my car stereo after 3 weeks.

This work is a bit more uptempo than his others, many tracks have a pronounced bass drive and subtle programmed textures that add depth and complexity to the music. There's not a clunker on the disc, I highly recommend it. For my money Peter White is one of the best of the smooth jazz lot.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful ! .......2005-10-03

Nice and soft smooth jazz , you ' ll never get tired of listening to this CD.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

    4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

5 out of 5 stars Album of the Year.......2007-02-17

Hands down the best album of the year, period.

The beats are ridiculous, the message is on point, and M-1 has distinguished himself as an amazing solo artist. YOU MUST GET THIS ALBUM!!!

5 out of 5 stars straight up rbg conscious music.......2007-02-12

just like other Dead Prez releases, this is straight fire with amazing lyrically-driven subversive tracks with a message, my favorite being "Comrade's Call."

    4 out of 5 stars Still Revolutionary... {4 Stars}.......2006-09-14

M1 is a good rapper. His work with Sticman on the RBG (an album I rated way too low when it first dropped) and Let's Get Free LPs, as well as a strong catalog of mixtapes, is pretty much untouchable. But expecting another Dead Prez album would be a mistake. This albums takes on a whole 'nother vibe. You always know what to expect from the Dead Prez camp whenever they drop new material -- strong messages of upliftment and self sufficience over soulful, intense, almost tribal production, but this time the vibe is a lot more mellow. Joints like "Til We Get There", "Been Through", "Confidential", "5 Elements", and "Early" are definitely standouts that follow the DP formula. The message of upliftment is definitely consistent on every track and fans will get exactly what they've come to expect from the DP rider.

The other side of the Dualdisc includes a music video for "Til We Get There", the album in dolby, and clips that focus on a day in the life of M1 and showcasing his message.

As far as flaws, though the message is great in every song, the problem with this album is the spotty production and too many tracks have terrible hooks. There are a few joints like "Land, Bread, & Housing", "Don't Put Down Your Flag", "Gunslinger", and "For You" that could be labeled as skip material while "Comrade's Call" and "The Beat" are pretty forgettable. The rest of the album is strong and flows well from track to track.

Confidential is definitely an album worthy of your support. M1 shows that you can mellow out and still get the same message out. Though the album is uneven in spots, it's still worth hearing. I recommend adding this one to the collection.

Standout Tracks: 5 Elements, Been Through feat. Ghostface & Raye, Love You Can't Borrow feat. Q Tip & Cassandra Wilson (My Favorite), Early feat. Sticman, 'Til We Get There feat. Knaan & Stori James, Too Smart, One Side (The Anthem), and Confidential feat. Raye

    3 out of 5 stars Good debut!!!.......2006-07-27

When i first listened to this album i was not really feelin a lot of the beats or rhymes. On about the 3rd listen it all started to sink in and it turned out to be a very solid album.

M1 did a good job of setting himself apart from dead prez but at the same time keeping it str8 RBG....M1 is a soulful dude, you can tell by some of the production and melodies on the tracks. The lyrics have a strong message in them without sounding like a preacher. If u are a big dead prez fan do not listen to it expecting "Let's Get Free" or "RBG" because that was the mistake i made. This is a M1 solo so it's the same car just a different driver. Hotep!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Decent start.......2006-05-12

This is album is pretty good. I think I expected a little more from it though. It has some thought provoking songs as well as some decent beats. I think Stic and m1 need each other on the songs though. They compliment each other and when they try to make songs without each other, there is an element missing. But this effort is 100 percent better than the likes of nelly, ying yang twins and others of there calibur.

    Album Description

Before a teenaged Al Anderson began his 22-year run with the well-loved and prolific NRBQ, he had The Wildweeds. Big Al, as he is known, wrote most of this collection of scorching rock and soul-influenced songs. This definitive lineup of The Wildweeds never put out an LP. Thus these tracks - many never released - form a great "lost" album of the 1960s.

For Confidential Recordings' in-depth package, Big Al not only lent his full cooperation, but also provided access to his personal collection of photographs and memorabilia. In addition, Wildweeds historian Richard Brukner interviewed other original band members and scores of family, friends and fans. His resulting sixteen pages of liner notes tell the complete story of The Wildweeds.

That story is also told by the music. At the collection's core are the eight songs that comprise the entirety of The Weeds' four single records released on Chess' Cadet label. Six previously unreleased tracks round out the set, including a searing cover of The Soul Sisters classic "I Can't Stand It" and "Fuzzy Wuzzy," a red-hot, fuzzed-out original instrumental. This compilation also debuts "No Good To Cry" in stereo and instrumental versions re-mixed and re-mastered from the original multi-track tapes by original producer Thomas "Doc" Cavalier.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Wildweeds Compilation.......2005-11-25

To be fair, the Wildweeds were more than just Al Anderson. While "Big Al" appeared to be the driving force behind the Weeds, the other members were certainly his equal, especially Ray Zeiner and Bob Dudek.

This is the 3rd Weeds compilation I've owned and it is without a doubt, the best one. All of the Weeds' soulful singles and "B" sides are included along with other great tunes that only folks lucky enough to see them live in the late 60's got to hear. There is none of that country crap that they did during their decline, which is included on the other compilations; no need to skip ahead to the next song.

If you enjoy other white soul groups such as the Young Rascals, you will certainly enjoy the Wildweeds.

What a talent... I knew this 35 years ago... hearing these audio clips was an experience! Just buy it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another long overdue, overlooked gem.......2004-01-15

Everyone in the Hartford, CT. area circa the mid 60s knew and loved Al Anderson and the Wildweeds. This material represents Anderson's blues and R&B roots versus his later rockabilly and country inclinations with NRBQ and as a songwriter for hire.
The single No Good to Cry was the pinnacle of the band's short-lived career, but there are another half dozen original gems on this fine CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great Soundtrack Albums !.......2007-02-24

If you could buy only one CD this year, I have NO IDEA what it should be. Maybe you should get a second job, you deadbeat. But if you buy two CDs (without having to work in a salt mine, or sell Uncle Bob, piece by piece, for experiments), it should be two soundtracks: L.A. Confidential and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Dark, ethereal, and moody, these albums have presence, and hold together on their own as great albums, able to stand apart and peer out from beneath the long, great shadows cast by their respective impressive film counterparts.

** As with all soundtracks, make sure you see the songs listed on the back and not simply "original score." Don't go home with orchestral, background music when you want classic songs and vocals.

L.A. Confidential has the period songs by the period's artists, including Johnny Mercer's FANTASTIC "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive." Jerry Goldsmith gets two pieces of his powerful score on the CD, the title track and the even better "Badge of Honor."

The period songs are great, the sweet voice of Kay Starr and Lee Wiley are terrific, and even the instrumentals are good here. Johnny Mercer, as mentioned before, is great here, but the stand-out on this album is Dean Martin's "Christmas Blues." In all his swagger-voiced, king-of-cool splendor, Dino brings us one of the greatest (and least heard) Christmas songs of all time.

Worth the price of admission itself.

My suggestion: get both CDs, dim the lights, pour yourself a beverage or four, and listen to these two albums back to back.

    Repeat as necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the essence.......2006-01-07

I enjoy compilation soundtracks, because if you don't like the song you're listening to, you may like the next. But that's not a problem with this collection anyway, as each vintage recording from the 50s perfectly underscores every scene in the film and the 50s period itself. I can easily recapture each scene in my mind as I'm listening to Gerry Mulligan, Kay Starr, Johnny Mercer, Chet Baker, Lee Willey, Joni James, Jackie Gleason, and Betty Hutton - all household names at the time and musical kingpins in this award-winning, romantic crime thriller. It was Jackie Gleason who was perhaps the first to introduce "mood" music - music for lovers - and it caught on big-time during most of the 50s. Picture long flowing hair on the women, cool martinis, a black and white legal system, racial tension between the haves and have-nots - and this soundtrack captures it almost perfectly. As a bonus, there are two tracks of the original motion picture score by Jerry Goldsmith, including the emotionally evocative closing credits with the understated trumpet lead. I've listened to this CD repeatedly over the years and it's a keeper in my permanent library.

4 out of 5 stars When the Soundtrack is better than the movie.......2004-12-27

Excellent Soundtrack full of old classics, evokes the mood, the scene without even watching the film. AS good as the soundtrack to French Kiss and thats high praise.

    5 out of 5 stars Delight.......2003-03-10

What a delightful CD. It exposed me to a world of music I never knew existed being only 20 years of age. Now I am a growing fan of Jazz all thanks to this CD's wonderful mix of Jazz and 50's classics.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......1999-03-02

Not as good as the movie, not as good as James Ellroys book, but the best sundtrack ever... It take's you all the way back to the fifti's and Los Angeles... you can heare the coruption...

Though it won more critical praise than any film in 1997, L.A. Confidential, director Curtis Hanson's smart adaptation of James Ellroy's gritty crime novel, was ultimately iced at the Oscars by Titanic, that overwrought cross between Love Story and The Poseidon Adventure. Scored by Jerry Goldsmith in a style reminiscent of his great work on Chinatown, L.A. Confidential includes just two cuts by the composer on its soundtrack. The film's--and soundtrack's--canny use of period jazz and pop standards is hard to fault, though; Johnny Mercer's lively "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive" is particularly sublime, and also featured are songs by Dean Martin, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Betty Hutton, Kay Starr, and others. --Jerry McCulley

      4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2006-03-11

The music is perfect, the only problem is really that the songs are too short. When you listen to it your left wanting to hear more, thats how good it is the music.

4 out of 5 stars A good score, but missing a lot of the score........2004-07-24

L.A. Confidential is one of Jerry Goldsmith's best scores and he might have won the Oscar that year if James Horner hadn't for "Titanic." This CD contains only part of the film score and leaves out a lot of the good stuff. Varese Sarabande needs to release an extended version.

5 out of 5 stars Am I developing a new respect for Goldsmith?.......2002-03-17

When I first read the words of Curtis Hanson inside the liner notes: "Jerry Goldsmith uses his musical gifts to help tell the story better than almost any other film composer", my jaw almost hit the floor. I would nominate someone like James Horner for a close second. I've made it clear before that I think Goldsmith is great at writing music for science fiction, but not necessarily for drama or action/adventure. I'm sorry but I have to disagree with Pete Murfet: The "Air Force One" score is good in many places, but it's not "brilliant".

The L.A. Confidential score truly is brilliant.

I can safely say that this is the kind of score that just about any serious drama that already includes songs by vocalists from the time period needs to glue everything together. The CD sure does pack a lot in only thirty minutes. Those lonely trumpuet solos are what do it for me the most, as are the eerie rumblings of the instruments heard when the police discover the aftermath of the Nite Owl massacre. The din of the timpani in a track like "Bloody Christmas" is what the hijacking shootout in "Air Force One" should have sounded like.

After all of my ranting and raving, the score does have its intended effect: punctuating the lives of the characters involved in the movie, making us as viewers feel what they feel. And that is the mark of a good film composer.

5 out of 5 stars Goldsmith back to his brilliant best.......1998-11-23

After writing some mediocre scores for mediocre films such as Chain Reaction & Executive Decision, Goldsmith has recently got back to his absolute best with brilliant scores for films such as Air Force One, The Ghost & the Darkness, & The Edge. His work here, however, is arguably the pick of the crop. Goldsmith could hardly fail to be inspired by Curtis Hanson's masterful adaption of James Ellroy's novel, & he provides a dramatic, powerhouse score. This score is typically Goldsmithian, with harsh, attacking string rhythms, and some stormingly vicious percussive writing - most notably where the two are combined in the opening track 'Bloody Christmas'. He also makes extremely good use of percussive piano rhythms, particularly at the low end of the scale, which is very typical of this composer. The melodic base of the score is a quite wonderful theme, usually entrusted to the solo trumpet - which links the score not only to the masterful Chinatown, but also to some songs featuring the playing of Chet Baker & others. Indeed, the film features possibly the most assured use of music (including those songs) that I have ever seen - easily matching the brilliance of Scorsese. This pure score CD is a wonderful listen, unfailingly thrilling & dramatic. That Titanic won the oscar over this gem is undoubtedly a tragedy, but not surprising, given it's huge commercial success. Most of all, however, this CD makes you want to watch the film again. Which could never be bad.

4 out of 5 stars One of Goldsmith's best scores in years.......1998-10-08

During the 1990's Jerry Goldsmith's music has gone from interesting and experimental to downright ordinary (exceptions:Rudy,First Night). LA Confidential returns Goldsmith to an earlier style of writing. Harkening back to his Chinatown score, Goldsmith writes a score dripping with noir (low key jazz, and moody strings)that will convince you that you are listening to a master at work. The major detour from Chinatown is Goldsmith's use of heavy percussion (tympany) and jarring strings. This most noticably comes out in "Bloody Christmas" the opening track. Highly recommended for a 30 minute listening experience.

Awesome, un-sappy kids' album. Perfect gift for parents who are cool and kids who are imaginative. The Sound of Worms is a 4-8 year old crowd pleaser!

5 out of 5 stars Get greasy but stay clean.......2002-06-14

From the opening Greasy Kid Stuff theme song to the closing Yo La Tengo version of My Little Corner of the World, Songs From Inside The Radio opens up a whole world of really good, fun music to enjoy with your kids. It is rockingly reminiscent of the great kids' music era ushered in by Peter Seger and Woody Guthrie. Hockey Monkey motivated my 8 yr. old son to pick up a guitar to learn to play and sing along. Ants in My Pants is hysterically funny to my 5 yr old. Chicken Impossible really gets the whole family listening. Them Bones is, of course, classic in the kids' music genre. That's Where the Plaque Is, has always been a tooth-brushing family favorite. This CD is a wonderful, fun way to bring really great music into your child's world and keep the doors open for communication, You Can Make a Difference if You Try, Try, Try.

4 out of 5 stars Should Be a Double CD!!!!.......2002-06-01

I haven't heard the CD yet, but I know the songs well from years of listening to Hova and Belinda's show. This is a fun CD that isn't just for kids. It's also for those who are kids at heart.
Tony Burillo's "There's A New Sound(The Sound of Worms") is a strange, catchy and slightly haunting tune. The Happiest Guys in the World's, "You Can Make a Difference If You Try, Try Try" is an upbeat anthem, and a pretty good blueprint for life. James Kochalka's "Monkey vs. Robot" is hilarious and Michael Shelly's ode to toothbrushing,"Thats Where the Plaque Is" will make every kid want to brush and floss each day. And to top it all off, Barbara Manning and the SF Seals "Kids Pirate Ship" is just plain fun.

My only quarrel with this is CD that it isn't twice as long. I can think of another 50 songs that deserve to be included. I hope there is a "Songs From Inside the Radio II" in the future.

      4 out of 5 stars GREASY & GREAT.......2002-05-27

My kids love this radio program, and this CD too! We would never buy (or even know where to look for) whole albums by these artists, so it is great to see them together in one place, great for long car trips!
