Wayne Shorter took jazz by storm with 2002s Footprints Live!, marking the return of the firebrand improviser of the 1960s after decades of self-effacing fusion. Beyond the Sound Barrier continues in the same vein, with more live recordings of his working quartet. Pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade bring a mercurial collective creativity to the project, adding a fresh urgency to the kind of interactivity that marked Shorters classic Blue Notes and his work with Miles Davis. The group can venture into free jazz on "Tinker Bell," explore the classical lyricism of Mendelssohns "On Wings of Song," or bring new life to older compositions, as with the leaders spinning, high velocity runs on "Joy Ryder" and the multi-dimensional exploration of "Over Shadow Hill Way." Each track is an adventure, with Shorters saxophones dancing through the bands creative firestorm. --Stuart Broomer

Feet on ground/ Head in orbit.......2006-03-28
This is the first work of Wayne's I have heard since Weather Report, and had assumed his return to traditional quartet, was a retreat not an advance. Well...what a revelation! With this lineup he has been able to anchor free improvisation to a minimal amount of structure, creating such vivid dynamic pieces that never get stuck in cliches, that the listener is constantly challenged to keep up. The "ORDER" is there to be "MINED" from the apparent chaos. This is the reward for repeated listening.
Could another collection of individuals pull it off? Not that I'm aware of. Jazz has always been the perfect musical metaphor for the American political experiment, how to allow every individual the maximum amount of freedom of expression, whilst avoiding a collective descent into chaos.
Wayne is showing us the way ahead here......
Deep and spontanious.......2006-03-09
I was lucky enough to hear Mr. Shorter a few years back, though it was just before I got hit with the jazz "bug", so I didn't know what to make of it. It was his quartet (same personnel as this album), and they most likely played material off Footprints Live! and other albums, which is pretty similiar to this album's works. I just remember it being very different than the type of jazz that I had usually listened to. FREE would be the word, but not bad on the ears...just different.
Of course, it has long been since then, and I hear his music in an entirely different way now.
Wayne Shorter is one of the greatest living musical composers, and definately an innovative saxophonist. He holds an endless list of credentials, and has played with the best of the best. In this setting, he is playing with some incredibly creative musicians -- pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Pattituci, and powerhouse (yet sometimes subtle) drummer Brian Blade. I hadn't heard of Perez until I bought this album, and it's a shame that I didn't hear him on other CDs. Of course, being a saxophonist, I was familiar with Brian Blade through Joshua Redman's albums.
If you are not too familiar with the traditional jazz lineages, this is probably not something that you will be able to sit through without having the urge to listen to something more relaxing. It took me maybe two months before I started enjoying every song on this CD, and all I listen to is jazz! It has that uber-modern sound and the elements of free jazz, yet it never looses sight of MELODY. It's deep music, and takes a lot of time to understand what they are doing. Seeing this music LIVE would be a treat, but this is better than not hearing it at all!
And for you saxophonists out there who don't like Shorter's tone, give him a chance. I used to cringe when I heard him, but the more I listened to his recordings, the more I became accustomed to not only his tone, but his unique style as well.
The 3rd Coming of Wayne.......2006-01-13
I heard this band in May 2005, live on the radio from a gig in Melbourne, Australia. It was my listening highlight for the year. This is a great live recording of a great band. My only disappointments are it is just over an hour long. There must have been a lot more that could have been fitted on a C.D. I also agree with another reviewer on the rapid fading of some tracks (Track 3 is really badly done.)
Easy listening it is not, but it will reward Wayne's fans old and new the more you hear the spontanious music "conversations" between these great musicians.
Those of you fortunate enought to see this quintet live must have witnessed something really special.
Just..not very good.......2005-10-28
the music is fascinating, the producing is just good... .......2005-10-15
This music makes no bow to commercialism. People who aren't interested in musical experimentation and boundary-smashing might find it hard to take. But make no mistake this is as good as music or art can get. This is Wayne Shorter at his best and music at its best.
Anyway, to me this record has got three weaknesses which are :
1) some pieces are shunted (As Far as the eye can see, Tinker Bell and Beyond the sound barrier). For this, I was tempted to put a 4 star review.
2) no accurate notation about the places where the concerts took place.
3) it gives the impression of a compilation (concerts from 2002-2004). Why not select a great concert and make a record from it ? Let's remember Miles in Berlin for instance... That's a tough decision to make. There must have been concerts better than others, haven't there, Rob ?... ;)
