We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

This is the classic Bards ..........2005-05-14

that we all love from the Renn Faire or the occasional convention. Full of fun with some of the sweeter melodies such as "Wild Mountain Thyme" this is the Bards at their best. If you're like and fell in love with these guys at a Faire or con, then this is surely the CD for you.

The Bards have recorded a tremendous library of old Ren Faire favorites, original songs, folk music, and the occasional Tom Lehrer tribute piece, and dominated the World Music charts on the old MP3.com.

A Faire to Remember captures the spirit of their live Ren Faire show; they recorded the songs the way they're performed, and even threw in "A Short Interlude" to keep the banter going. As I listened, I felt like they were with me in my living room, talking to me, while I laughed and clapped and sang along.

If you like the Bards' music and haven't heard them live, the free-form approach of A Faire to Remember is as close to being there as you can get. You owe it to your "elf" to get this CD.

Amazing cd.......2006-11-16

We received this cd as a gift and thought "oh, cute, but really more for the parents than the kid." Boy were we wrong. It is now known in our house (well, car really) as the "magic cd" because anytime our son gets fussy in the car, we hit the button for this cd and, about 90% of the time, instant silence is our reward. He loves it, we don't get sick of listening, and I can't recommend it enough.

Interesting songs from around the world.......2006-10-29

We bought this CD for our baby loving the idea of him falling asleep to international lullabies. It is a nice CD with mostly beautiful songs on it. However, our baby prefers another lullaby CD we have, and those are just Africa lullabies. Far more relaxing. There are a couple songs on this CD that aren't so relaxing and bedtime-oriented. But, for the most part, it is lovely.

I work as a daycare teacher, and I personally love this CD, and ended up buying a copy for myself. Great rhythm, great variety, and if you're good at languages you could learn them to sing yourself.

If you want something something different, try this. Not only is it soothing for our daughter but my wife and I enjoy hearing it as well, which is a good thing when you play music each evening and have a baby monitor on. The songs are beautiful and eclectic. A great, soothing cd for adults, not just children.

I bought this before my son was born- I was in a music store, and the CD just caught my eye, so I thought I'd try it out. After my son was born, we would play the CD for him every night. It was so calming and peaceful- he would (and still does 2 years later) fall asleep to it every time. Even though its in various foreign languages, the chanting and simple music is very soothing. My son loves it!

What a find!.......2006-08-31

I found this CD by accident and am glad I did. It has become one of my top favorite CDs. We play it every week on Shabbat now. Anyone that knows and understands the Siddur should really appreciate this wonderful music. Some things are timeless and this music is one of them.

Putumayo's Romantica presents an appealing alternative to the airwaves' fast-food diet of "oh baby, baby" with a collection of music that sounds more colorfully genuine, rooted in the age-old tradition of courtship common to all cultures. Scotland's favorite son Dougie MacLean contributes a traditional hopeful ballad, "She Will Find Me," and Louise Taylor's sweetly eccentric intonation is set off beautifully by rousing hand drums on the standout "Your Face." American Toshi Reagan's "Love and Affection" is spirited, sultry, gospel-tinged R&B, while a loose and lighthearted Marley-esque take on a reggae tune of the same name is performed to great effect by African popster Majek Fashek. --Paige La Grone

This CD is definitely a must-have for any Putumayo music collector. Not only is it a diverse collection of songs, but it's also the ultimate in around-the-world, mellow, by-the-firelight love songs (step aside Barry White!). And it doesn't matter that most of the songs aren't in English; you can FEEL what the artists are singing about. Recommended for the person with a little bit of an eclectic taste and looking for some "romantica" in their life...

Truth, Strength and Comfort for Desperate Times.......2005-03-31

This album is about being unwavering in one's commitment as the world is coming undone. It is about understanding the responsibility of an artist to re-envision the world, and holding on to that commitment no matter what comes. It's about two women who write and sing from the heart and the mind, who despite having found one another have managed to remember everyone else as well. It's about love not just for a person, but for a community of people, even when that community is so repressed that it seems to only exist in your own mind.

Prior to this album, I knew Pat Humphries from her 1992 album "Same Rain." Her voice on that album is unique, both strong and sensitive, as well as clear and pure. The genre is folk and folk-rock. The overriding quality is inspirational. You cannot listen to it and remain unmoved.

"One" represents a deepening of both the songwriting and vocal quality of that initial album through a collaboration with Sandy O, the other half of Emma's Revolution. Sandy's voice is a perfect complement to Humphries', and their harmonies are not just those of notes but also of personality and consciousness. Humphries' voice is one of those remarkable instruments that only grows more resonant with age, and 12 years after her debut it has changed only in its increased complexity while losing nothing of its original clarity and strength. As a duo, they have tremendous integrity.

The genre is still folk-rock and folk-pop, and the arrangements, musicianship and production quality are simply as close to perfect as I have ever heard, with a wide circle of contributors who have otherwise backed such well-known artists as Dar Williams and Bonnie Raitt.

The songs are filled with remarkable storytelling. "If I Give Your Name" is perhaps the most striking. It tells the story of (among others) an undocumented worker whose wife is lost in the World Trade Center atrocity, but who is unable to step forward to inquire about her because of fear of deportation. To me, this speaks so eloquently of the wheels of injustice between which the oppressed are tortured and crushed, giving the lie to the attitude of offended virtue that has been used by the present Administration to orchestrate a campaign of vengeance that has led only to an incalculably greater degree of horror and atrocity. But their genius is that instead of saying all that, they just tell this simple story, and we realize those truths ourselves.

This is not one of those albums where there are a few good songs and a number of disappointments. Not a single track is wasted; there's nothing to be skipped over when listening to this album. That is no doubt not only because of a commitment to craft, but also because of a commitment to living the music that these musicians so evidently have.

The soaring strings of the original orchestra led by the late great Mantovani are once again presented in this brand new Vocalion release of two of the maestro's masterpiece recordings first released in 1964 (Folk Songs) and 1968 (Tango). Folk Songs from Around the World will charm and excite listeners with melodies as diverse as Aura Lee (what Elvis sang as Love Me Tender) and the sizzling sounds of Hava Nagila. The highly disciplined orchestra under the baton of Mantovani perform spectacular arrangements of "Two Guitars" from Russia and folk songs from Japan, Europe,and the British Isles arranged with such artistry that they will readily evoke from each listener intense emotions. Fun and educational for kids.......2006-08-07

I believe that word play and sounds are important for youngsters mental development so purchased this CD which is great at playing with words. My son enjoys saying/singing the words on this CD. He really enjoys "I'm going on a Huka Lau" and trying to say "Flea Fly Flow Mosquito" several times fast. Katherine Dines' melodious voice and clear pronunciation comes through strongly on this CD.

GET THIS CD!!!.......2004-07-09

My 13 month old is absolutely mesmerized by the music on this CD! All I have to do is put the CD on in his room, and he will sit through the entire thing while playing quietly and staring up at the CD player. It's incredible! AND, I've noticed him trying to make the sounds and "singing along". I cannot tell you how much I love this CD! The songs are contagious!! Watch out or you'll end up singing them all day. Get this CD!
