5 out of 5 stars Hit Zone!.......2005-02-24

Like 1984's SUDDENLY,this album would spawn four hits. They are WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH(THE TOUGH GET GOING) from the 1985 film,THE JEWEL OF THE NILE. In the video, the film's stars Michael Douglas,Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito appear as background vocalists backing up Billy Ocean performing the song on stage. Also there's LOVE IS FOREVER,a beautiful love ballad that did not appear on the 1989 GREATEST HITS compilation. The title track is cool. So is THERE WILL BE SAD SONGS(TO MAKE YOU CRY). The other songs are great.

4 out of 5 stars good billy ocean record.......2003-02-14

this is a very good album its so eighties i remember seeing the video for when the going gets tough little danny davito and kathleen turner dancing was very good times then to bad we cant turn back the clock best songs 1. love zone 2. sad songs 3 tough gets going

4 out of 5 stars An 80's Classic!.......2002-04-18

This gem of an album, while sounding seriously dated at times, is still a pleasure from start to finish. The opener, "When The Going Gets Tough...." is a fun song with a great melody (especially on the bridge) that hearkens back to the mid 80's and times of sheer enjoyment (remember the video with Danny Devito, Michael Douglas et all?) and fun of the forgettable movie it was featured in "Jewel Of The Nile". The burbling, bass popping title track is the best cut here, with it's light jazz flourishes and serious R&B groove (I'd love to know who the bassist and guitarist are, they really anchor this baby)"Love Zone" never sounds old or trite, it's a timeless track. The biggest hit here, "....Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" is still a lovely, if saccharine ballad that has stood the test of time fairly well and still gets regular play on light FM stations across the nation. It will somehow endure through the ages.
All in all a nice, if not indespensible, collection. The title track elevates it just slightly above average.

5 out of 5 stars Vanessa is way Better off now!.......2006-11-03

I just finished with my review for Vanessa's first Cd "The Right Stuff" and plugged this one as her much more appealing album. I was very pleasantly surprised with this Cd from the beginning to the end. I love that there are several cool dance numbers, tract #1,2,and #10. I know that "Save The Best For Last" was the big hit, which I loved when it first hit the air waves(I remember waiting by the radio and listening to Hot 105.7 just to catch this sond to record it on tape!). However, this is the song I listen to least because there are so many other great songs on the Cd. Vanessa's voice sounds sooo much better here, and who cares if this Cd was as some would say "over produced"(whatever that means anyway), it worked. Vanessa Williams' music stops at this Cd for me, why in the world did she not make another Cd like this one is frustrating.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-04-09

Yes, this is a classic album for any 90's R&B fan. I have her greatest hits CD and the girl delivered on that CD and she did it on this. Girl, has some cuts....... I always thought Vanessa Willams was just a pretty face ( she reminds me of my step-mom when she was in her 20's.) but the girls really can sing.

I love the album version of "I Got Work To Do. And the other single with Brian Mc Knight. Not save the best for last but the other one.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a comfortable zone!.......2005-09-23

Vanessa's sophomore effort "Comfort Zone" is a step up from her debut album and showcases a greater maturty. My favorite songs are her famous "Save The Best for Last" as well as the epic closer "Goodbye" which has excellent keybaords and great musicianship.

4 out of 5 stars Vanessa is in the Zone, The Comfort Zone that is........2005-07-13

Vanessa around this time had already had two of her four children, five top ten hits from her previous album, won numerous awards, etc. But the question was would Williams fall into the usual sophomore slump as so many other artists? The answer to the previous question would be no since this has become her highest selling album to date.

The first three tracks from the album are excellent and even though her first single and first hit from this album, "Running Back to You" is somewhat dated, but it's a great, empowering tune about how she refuses to allow some man to walk all over her. The follow up single and title track, "The Comfort Zone" shows Williams at her sexiest as she can put any person into the 'the mood' with her smooth, sexy vocals and teasing lyrics. The third track "Work to Do" is a good remake of an Isley Brothers' tune flipping the script to a woman's point of view about her not being home because of her career.

Williams on this album continued to prove her best with ballads. The excellent ballad tracks for this album is the chart-topping worldwide hit "Save The Best For Last" and the follow up single "Just for Tonight." Also, the beautiful jazz cover "What Will I Tell My Heart" that was also featured in her forgettable movie, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. The song shows how she can squeeze all of the emotion out of a song without being like her counterparts and over singing a tune, this is one of the best songs Williams has probably recorded in my book! The last track "Goodbye" is also good, the song sounds somewhat dated but NOT the type of dated when listening to it would make you cringe.

As with her previous album there was some tracks which the album could of been without such as her duet with Brian McKnight on "You Gotta Go." The duet lasts too long and even though it is good that Williams does not sound helpless in lyrics, but it is not really all that catchy. I would recommend seeking out her later duets with McKnight such as the international smash hit "Love Is" and their recent duet off her Silver and Gold album, "Joy to the World." Another track which could of been left off the album is one of the few tunes Williams uses her writing skills, "2 of a Kind" as the song lyrically does not hook the listener as it could.

Overall this has become one of Williams best albums and I personally think it's sad that her music is not as treasured as it should be. I would give this album 4 1/2 stars but there is not a sort of option on Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Dynamic second album vocally and musically! .......2005-07-08

Vanessa Williams' second album The Comfort Zone succeeds far better than her first. She had multiple hits like the classic ballad Save The Best For Last. The other hit ballad, Just For Tonight has a smooth slickness to it like shiny floor wax. Keith Thomas' glistening keyboards and production dominate most of her ballads. The uptempo tunes of Hairston and Gale, Phase 5, Rex Rideout and others are just as funky, especially the high energy hip-hop-inspired beats on Running Back To You. Liked her remake of the Isley Brothers' Work to Do. Save the Best has had a strong shelf life as it is still being played in drugstores and supermarkets. It has such a soothing, comforting feel to it.The Brian McKnight offerings are just as fabulous. This is such a dynamic album that did well on many formats in '91 and '92.

5 out of 5 stars In the zone is Jazzy.......2007-05-21

I've been listening to Jazz for a while now but this is the first jazz cd that I have purchased recently. It is so good! Maybe it's the basketball connection, maybe it's the jazz, maybe it's WT, but this cd is great. It is so smooth.

5 out of 5 stars Just plain good.......2006-10-04

One of those rare albums that got me, well.... in the zone. I wasn't too hot on WT before, and when I someone gave me thisCD I didn't play it for the longest time. Until one day I just popped it in the player, and it's been doing overtime ever since. Just plain good stuff - perfect for those rushhour commutes to and from work... chills you out, and sets you up for a relaxed approach.

5 out of 5 stars In The Zone By Wayman Tisdale.......2005-04-08

What can I say except that the man is a Gem.
How is it that some folk just have what it takes?
To be the very best at more than one thing.
Sing ,play the guitar and run up and down the court like
he owns them all.
This and everything the man touches turns to Gold.
This was the first of his works that I heard.
After just a few days of this sample.
I was out to buy more and more.
Every cut is a favorite of mine.
Please dig -In the Zone ,Don't take your Love away ,
Summer Breeze and his rendition of Star Ship.
These songs bring more of a smile to my face and fill my mine
with many possibliies.
If I'm angry at someone I cannot stay angry for long if
Wayman's Music is in ear shot.
Pretty powerful stuff "HuH".
The photo's of him in the sleave of this particular cd
are magnificent.
He should never allow anyone else ,to photogragh him eccept that person.
I wish I could find a 11/16 of everyone of them to hang on my wall.
Get this and all of his stuff ,you will not be sorry.

I promise!

5 out of 5 stars WOW !!!.......2004-07-21

This is by far the "Best of the Best" I just saw him at the Capitol Jazz Festival with Dave Koz (another one of my personal favorites). Wayman is just incredible. I also saw him at a small gathering yesterday to kick off his new CD, he is awesome, and just think he plays by ear, he doesn't read music !!! He is honestly blessed !!! Mel from Baltimore

4 out of 5 stars A formula that works !!!.......1999-02-10

Just put this cd in the player and relax. There's nothing groundbreaking here but he never said there was. He's a very talented musician and deserves respect for his accomplished sound !!

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever.......2005-01-28

This is the funkiest album ever. Most of the band is back together again, and they are tight. Funk is about the rhythm, and you can tell that Dave and Rocco are having fun. If you have been a TOP fan from the beginning, as I have, you will be excited about the new songs

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-07-24

There are some great songs on this Cd. "Gimme your Love" is great. Stranger in my own home is not so great. But most of the songs on this CD are good. The newer musicians of TOP are great. Especially Tom Politzer. Get this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Garibaldi is back.......2004-07-13

Yes, David Garibaldi is back and that alone is worth the price of admission. The whole band is in fine form on this disc. My only reservation is that I don't feel the songs are as memorable as on other TOP albums. Maybe repeated listenings will change my mind. Still worth every penny.

One of the best in a long line of Tower Of Power great albums. They did a wonderful job of keeping their sound consistant. Larry Braggs is a great singer, Doc and Rocco keep the low end strong, along with the great David Garibaldi on drums. Emilio keeps the energy up, and the band follows the leader. Outstanding album, couldn't recomend it higher.

The "sophomore jinx" is any critically acclaimed artist's greatest fear: you've had your whole life to come up with your first album; do you have it in you to follow it up just a year or two later? However, for Buckshot, 5ft. and DJ Evil Dee, add publicized legal battles with their former label and surmounting anticipation since 1993's classic debut, Enta da Stage, to their list of worries. On War Zone, the trio also known as Black Moon continues with the roles it defined on its first album: Buckshot as the dominant rhyme slayer, 5ft. playing second lyricist, and Evil Dee and Da Beatminerz handling the production duties. "Onslaught" is the album's powerful opener, and it pairs Buckshot's matured but still ferocious lyrical flow with the always-powerful Busta Rhymes on the hook. (Other guests include A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip, Heather B, and the Cocoa Brovaz.) In its entirety, War Zone lacks the energy of the group's debut, but tracks such as "War Zone" and "Anialation" (which pairs 5ft. with M.O.P.) prove that the sophomore jinx didn't land on Black Moon. --Celine Wong

5 out of 5 stars Bringing the heavy artillery to the War Zone.......2006-01-03

Black Moon's second release "Warzone" brought changes along with it....Buckshot dropping the "Shorty" from his name, the record label change to Priority Records, the absence of 5FT(was incarcerated during the making of this release)but to their benefit, frontman Buckshot represents the group well throughout the album including several guest appearances from the likes of Busta Rhymes, Heather B and the other members of the Bootcamp Clik to name a few. On time delivery and that grimy Beatminerz production is what carries this album to an elevated status that hip hop fans will admire. As stated in my review for Enta Da Stage, 5FT never received the credit he deserved due to his limited appearances on Black Moon albums but what he bought to the table would forever be etched in my memory and could only hope that if Black Moon were to ever release another album, that 5FT would hopefully get more time to shine. However, on the strength of this album, this is a must have gem.

        4 out of 5 stars Zoned Out.......2005-09-18

Black Moon hiatus of five years return with their sophomore release, War Zone with results almost as good as their debut. Buckshot, Evil Dee & 5 Ft. relied on the production of previous producers, Da Beatminerz to create the foundation for the group. Busta Rhymes helped out on the hook on "The Onslaught". The title track contains a track with space effects and sounds where Buckshot and 5 Ft. take the war to their enemy's front door. "This Is What It Sounds Like" has ancient sounds and feels that's nearly calming and laid back. Asking competitors to war with "Come Get Some" featuring Louieville Sluggah of O.G.C. as Buckshot enters with two shots. On to a more hypnotic track on "Weight of the World" as the Moon maintains on their struggles and life experiences. If lyrics is what you miss, "One-Two" is a good example over a sample that emphases the grimy rhymes of Black Moon. They take it back to the old school with "Two Turntables & A Mic". This is probably the only or almost commercial appeal. "Annihilation" featuring M.O.P & Teflon was just that to add to the war theme of the album. Prepare yourself to entering the War Zone if you're aiming for the stars.

4 out of 5 stars Black Moon brings the War Zone!!.......2000-12-25

I was never a big follower of Black Moon or Smif N Wessun previously but after hearing this CD I may have to go back and see what I might have missed. I actually purchased this based on other reviews and opinions I had heard. I didn't have a chance to hear it in a listening station and definitely not on local radio. I was also impressed with the small number of guest appearances. Throughout the entire CD it keeps a Black Moon feel and does not take on the guests style.

My first impression was that these beats are some of the funkiest, raw tracks I have heard lately. Rather than rely on well polished production or R&B type tracks, Black Moon comes with pure underground hard driving bass, drums and vocals sprinkled with effects throughout. Song after song had me noddin' my head and repeating the selection. While lyrically they are not at the top of any list, their delivery and style more than makes up for any verbal weakness. Songs like Weight Of The World, War Zone, Freestyle, This Is What It Sounds Like (Worldwind) and Come Get Some are close to musical perfection. With the exception of a few songs, Two Turntables & A Mic, most contain little or rare samples. Musically there are few low points on War Zone.

The only disappointment for me was the lyrical content. Constant reinforcement of how hard they are, or references to guns could have been reduced in my opinion. While Buckshot may have a gun-related name, his lyrical ability is obvious and it would be nice to see him try an expand his approach. The vocal play between Buckshot, 5 FT and Evil Dee is a good example of how a crew can work together and still have their own styles.

You won't be hearing this on any commercial radio stations but this is definitely a CD to pick up.
