Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2006-12-13

Now folks, both of what the two other reviewers wrote about the tragical death of Fritz Wunderlich is wrong. Wunderlich died in hospital at September 17 1966. He had broken his skull, when he fell down the stairs in the hunting-house of a friend. Late in the evening of September 16, Wunderlich, as usual when not at home, had phoned his wife in Munich. He was very tired from strolling through the forest the whole day, making out the ideal locations for the hunt, which should start early in the next morning (Wunderlich was a passionate hunter). After he had wished his wife a good night, he went to the staircase in order to go down to his bedroom at the first floor. He still wore his heavy hunting boots - with open shoestrings! As walking downstairs, Wunderlich struggled over the open shoestrings and grabbed for the banisters, which was not more than a rope, fixed to the wall. The banisters teared out, and Wunderlich fell down the whole stairs. Fritz Wunderlich died in hospital the next day. It was only short before his 36'th birthday. An exceptional singing career had come to an untimely end. Some people believe that Wunderlich was drunken at the time of accident. If this is true can't be proven any more. But still this is not what his close friends said, regarding his accident and his death. In my opinion Wunderlich was the last of the really great tenors of the last century. All the tenors which came to fame after him (sorry folks, even such maestros as Pavarotti and Domingo) lack a certain quality in singing. It's the ease of breath flow, or singing on the breath without pushing the voice, it's the overtones, the legato, the mezza voce, the messa di voce and many more things - in short: the overall beauty of the voice through both registers. Wunderlich was the last tenor who had all this. Other examples are Caruso, McCormack, Gigli (despite the sobbing in his later recordings) and of course the wonderful Jussi Björling. But these are only some few names. If you listen for example to the cd's in the box "Famous tenors of the past" you will find that there were many very good and outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20'th century and - as we can only assume - in the time before the invention of the grammophone. Take a close look at todays famous tenors (I know, there are some quite good and promising ones) but what are they in comparison to those tenors (or better to say, to their voices and singing) I just mentioned before?

Please make your own decision.

5 out of 5 stars Fritz Wunderlich can do no wrong...........2006-05-05

... okay, maybe. It's just that I've never heard a recording I didn't love. And I prefer that he sing everything in German even when that means not using original language.

This is a bit strange because I'm most often bugged by Don Carlos and Vepres in Italian (just a personal quirk). Of course, I'm also bugged by dropping the "s" in Don Carlos, which is always incorrect. The man's name IS Carlos whether in Italian or French.

I tried to write Mr. Avila a personal note, but could not, so let me say that Fritz Wunderlich did not die of cancer, but a dreadful accident in Scotland (I'll not go into the whys and wherefores, I just wanted to set PART of the record straight.)

5 out of 5 stars The Wonder of Wunderlich.......2005-11-22

Deutsche Grammophone does it again! This is an extensive 3-cd compilation album featuring the artistry of the great German tenor Fritz Wunderlich in a variety of vocal repertoire - Baroque cantata/oratorio, opera and Lieder. Like the other critic pointed out, I first heard Fritz sinigng a superb Tamino in the Karl Bohm Magic Flute, although I have also heard him sing Lieder opposite the mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig and baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who were his contemporaries and colleagues. Wunderlich died tragically in 1966 of cancer. He inspired a generation of purely lyric tenors or "tenors di grazie" whose charming voice would never roughen and lack grace. His Germanic style earned him popularity in World War II Europe and he was the leading exponent of Lieder in the 50's. His tenor voice is glorious, as close to a male angel as possible. On this recording, we are treated to sumptuous arias from Bach's Christmas/Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas. Also noteworthy are the unsurpassed performances of Mozart tenor heroes- such as Belmonte from "Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail" (Abduction from the Seraglio) and his unbeatable Tamino from Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute. He sings bel canto opera arias fo tenor, from master composers Rossinni, Bellini and Verdi. While I don't much like that he is singing Italian arias in German, one must remember that at this time, in the LP Era of World War II Germany and Austria, German-born opera singers sang Italian opera in German translation/revisions. While many German singers could indeed sing in Italian, they were mostly trained to sing it in German because of excessive national pride and because Germans viewed Italian opera as course and un-melodic. Still, there have been superb German singers who sang in Italian like Wagner diva Birgit Nilsson, baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, tenor Peter Schreier, soprano Edda Moser, baritone Walter Berry, tenor Herman Pretty, all post-Wunderlich sensations. Wunderlich sings Lieder in one CD with great and unrivaled musicianship. Especially impressive are the Viennese pieces. Further to the cd's this album is equipped with photos of Wunderlich and his family and a detailed profile biography.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this release more than 5 stars: it's terrific!!!.......2005-10-28

I knew little about the German tenor Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), except reading the accolades given to his recordings and performances by reviewers in "American Record Guide" over the past 13 years. I knew Wunderlich recorded the role of Tamino in the famous DG recording of Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (Now on DG Originals CDs), but was not aware of what a wide range of repertoire he had until hearing this release.

This release has a wide variety of Wunderlich's discography, including Bach arias from his Christmas and Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas; his Mozart roles in "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" (Eugen Jochum/Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and "Die Zauberflote" (Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic); a variety of arias and duets by Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Richard Strauss, mostly sung in German, and with Hermann Prey, baritone and Erika Koth, soprano in many of the duets; Baroque arias by Handel, from "Xerxes" (including the famous "Ombre mai fu" sung in German) and "Julius Caesar", selections from Monteverdi's "Orfeo" (an early track from 1955 sung in Italian); Schumann's "Dichterliebe", 4 Beethoven Lieder, including "Adelaide" and "Der Kuss"; and 9 Schubert lieder, including "An der Musik," and "Der Musensohn", all with Hubert Giesen, piano; Popular songs such as "Granada" and Viennese songs, with chamber orchestra accompaniment. There are no texts for the songs, but you may have text booklets with other CD releases, so don't really need them when you hear Wunderlich's beautiful voice.

There is a booklet with articles about Wunderlich's career, including a preface by his widow, Eva Wunderlich, photos of Wunderlich as a boy and young man, with his wife Eva in 1965, and children Constanze, Wolfgang, and Barbara. I enjoy reading and looking at the booklet, even apart from listening to the beautiful recordings.

Wunderlich was a genius, and his voice sounds great in every track, mono (some, but not a majority) and stereo (most of the tracks in the 7 discs are stereo) alike. If you love great music, and opera, but like me aren't often of a mind to sit still for 3 hours to listen to one, get this. It's a great release, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm thankful to God for great music, for the ability to hear and feel, and for Fritz Wunderlich and his service to music lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars The beauty and grace of French Baroque Opera.......2007-04-29

I hadn't heard of Carolyn Sampson before I bought this CD, and since there aren't any sample tracks for this CD, I was sort of going out on a limb when I bought this CD...but I wanted a Rameau aria CD badly, so I decided just to go ahead and buy it. One of the best buys I ever made. Carolyn Sampson's voice is not the typical colorless, vibratoless, dull voice that you sometimes get with a baroque recital. Instead her voice has radiance, resplendence, and resonance. She has a quick, fluttery, but even vibrato, which is ideal for these arias. But she doesn't use her vibrato on every tone...for example, sometimes she will hit and sustain and crescendo on a note in her upper register without using any vibrato at all and it is one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard come out of the human throat. She has a very agile voice, which every singer who attempts any kind of baroque singing should have. Her runs are clean and precise. Her voice is "french" sounding, but it isn't weak or limp...it has a considerable amount of power, and she wields it with an enviable amount of professionalism. The music, of course, is sheer beauty and elegance. I'll take any one of Rameau's simple, lovely melodies over the heavy, dramatic "screamo" arias of Wagner or Verdi. The CD's sound quality is crystal clear. The Ex Cathedra Chorus and Orchestra deliver Rameau's music beautifully and effortlessly. This disc deserves to be played only in your finest stereo.

P.S. Track 17 was recently featured in the 2006 movie "Marie Antoinette"...It's one of my personal fav's :-)

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful addition to any baroque music-lover's collection.......2007-03-03

The lovely voice of Carolyn Sampson is well suited to the truly gorgeous music of Rameau, of which a nice selection is included on this CD. The music itself poses no difficulty for Ms Sampson, and she negotiates the elegant lines and tuplet-endowed sections, along with the intrinsic embellishments of the arias, with ease.

There are many beautiful things in the CD, and for the sheer loveliness of the voice, what a pleasure it is to hear.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, there is a bit of cross-over between this and the delicious "Airs baroque français" by Patricia Petibon - and that is an album I strongly recommend in addition to this. I do personally prefer Petibon's recording, although this CD by Ms Sampson is also charming.

There are a number of reasons for that. Firstly, Petibon is French, and she sings (of course) in perfect French. Ms Sampson's French does not sound entirely French (however, most listeners won't be worried by this). Secondly, Patricia Petibon's understanding of the language also enables her to paint the words and music to convey meaning to an extent that is not equalled by Carolyn Sampson. Again, this won't matter a great deal to most listeners who will primarily be ravished by the lovely sounds of Carolyn Sampson's singing. Thirdly, it's true that there are quite a few purely instrumental pieces on this recording. Not that I particularly object... I love both Rameau's vocal music and his instrumental music, but in general when one purchases a vocal recital album, that's what one wants - a vocal recital.

The differences between the two singers' approach is exemplified mostly in the arias which are sung by each - that is, Rameau's "Soleil, fois de ces lieux !" and "Formons les plus brillants concerts... Aux langeurs d'Apollon". There is more "coeur" in Petibon's singing, but Ms Sampson offers her own attractions in her singing, of course. It's the lovely clarity of her voice that will appeal - it's a light and well-focused soprano timbre with considerable agility and a beautiful evenness throughout the range.

I enjoyed this album very much, and Carolyn Sampson's fresh and shining voice is extremely attractive to listen to. I have listened with pleasure to almost everything this very gifted singer has recorded, and she is certainly a singer whose recordings are worth collecting.

    Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good, but I would have cut back on the instrumental movements.......2006-09-18

I like this CD a lot and I have listened to it many times since I bought it. Carolyn Sampson has a fine soprano voice and a great vocal technique. I have enjoyed her singing for some time and her contributions to the King's Consort recordings of cantatas by Kuhnau, Zelenka, Knüpfer and Schelle were highlights for me.

I have few complaints about this disc, but I would have liked a few more vocal works and slightly less instrumental movements from the operas. However, as a "walk through" Jean-Philippe Rameau's operas, this CD is first class. There are so many Handelians around these days, endlessly singing the praises of the "Beloved Saxon", it is easy to forget that Rameau was easily as great as Handel in most areas and he certainly was a much more imaginative and skilled composer of orchestral music than his British-based peer. Whenever Handel had more instruments at his disposal, what did he do? He had the extra instruments play in unison with existing musical lines.
    I digress.

I also have Patricia Petibon's incredible "Virtuoso French Baroque Opera Arias" CD, which is, in my opinion, utterly beyond any serious criticism. I was eager to compare Ms Sampson's interpretations with Mademoiselle Petibon's slightly older recording. Carolyn Sampson does well, however, in "Aux langueurs d'Apollon", it is clear to me that she just can't touch Patricia Petibon in realm of imagination, characterisation, wit and style. Sampson's La Folie seems to be polite and charming - as opposed to Petibon's La Folie, who really is quite mad.

Sampson does use more vibrato than Petibon, who uses virtually none. Listeners who aren't attracted to HIP interpretations of Baroque music will probably thus favour Sampson's interpretations over Petibon's.

Carolyn Sampson's interpretations of the slower and less extrovert arias are very good indeed. Her "Soleil, fuis de ces lieux" is very attractive and not inferior to Petibon's in any way. I just wish someone had brought the great aria "Triste apprêts, pâles flambeaux" from Castor et Pollux to her attention. Ms Sampson would have done something very nice with that great Baroque aria.

I love this CD and it makes for some great listening. Needless to say, the experience of Patricia Petibon in French Baroque opera gives her a considerable edge, but Sampson's is a highly worthy recording.

    5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Introduction to Rameau's Operas.......2006-04-25

I had the pleasure of hearing high tenor Jean-Pierre Fouchard and the Opera LaFayette perform a recital of Rameau's operatic music during a snowy February afternoon concert at the University of Maryland. I wanted to hear more Rameau opera and found this excellent CD with a program similar to the one I heard live, but for a soprano voice. This CD on Hyperion, "Love Songs from the Operas" features soprano Carolyn Sampson and Jeffry Skidmore conducting the choir and orchestra of Ex Cathedra, an English early music ensemble, similar to the Opera LaFayette of my own home town, that performs in period style on period instruments. The CD is a wonderful way to get to know Rameau.

Jean-Phillipe Rameau (1687 -- 1764) began composing operas at the age of 50. (Together with his near-contemporary, Domenico Scarlatti, Rameau shows there is hope yet for us late-bloomers)
With their emotional passion, harmonic daring, and unmistakable rhythms, Rameau initiated a new age in French opera. A figure of the Enlightenment in music, Rameau went far towards initiating the classical style of Gluck and Mozart. French opera during Rameau's time was largely a mixture of dramatic stage material and musical interludes known as divertissiments. Thus, his musical accomplishment can legitimately be approached by a selection from his various operas, as offered on this CD and in the live performance I mentioned above.

Sampson and Skidmore offer selections from seven Rameau operas, including his first opera Hipolyte et Acis of 1733, and including as well Les Indes galantes, Les Paladin, Plate, Zoroastre, Dardanus, and Pygmalion. Many of the works include collections of musical interludes from the divertissiments, while others are solo selections. There is a great variety of music on the recording, including a surprising amount of comedy material and, in Platee, Rameau's satire of the florid, melismatic style of Italian opera. Much of appeal of Rameau's music results from the interplay between simple melodic lyricism and the variety of his orchestration, particularly for winds. Flute, oboe, bassoon, and percussion are all well in evidence here. I particularly enjoyed some of the slower more serious ariettes, including "Soleil fuis du ces lieux" from Plate and "Regne Amour" from Zoroastre. Several of the selections show the origins of French baroque music in the dance and feature lively orchestral introductions followed by solos. There are two fine examples in the opening divertissiment from Les Indes Gallantes. Strongly structured and rhythmic orchestral interludes are offered in "Tambourin" from Dardanus and in the minuet and rondo from "Les Indes Gallantes." And the choir is featured in selections from Plate. But Ms Sampson's clear, passionate, and idiomatic soprano remains the chief attraction of this CD.

In his study, "French Baroque Music", James Anthony observed (p. 129) that "In terms of musical statement, there is no question but that [Rameau] is the greatest composer of the French eighteenth century; there is also no question that, among all the first line composers of that century of giants, he is the one least appreciated today." For those who lack the good fortune I had in hearing a live recital of Rameau, this CD provides an introduction to the beauty and power of his operatic music.

I am pleased that this CD has already attracted the attention of two excellent and thoughtful reviewers.

    Robin Friedman

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Rameau.......2006-01-09

I just want to add a few comments on this disc, which has already been very well reviewed: I've enjoyed some of Rameau's keyboard music, but can't say I've been thoroughly captured by his operas. This disc proved to be an excellent exploration of Rameau's vocal music, and I highly recommend it. Carolyn Sampson has a light, fresh voice with great appeal. The selections include pieces from several of the lesser-known operas that are real gems, along with more well-known items (within the Rameau orbit, which is arguably underappreciated). The accompaniment, by Jeffrey Skidmore and Ex Cathedra, is superb--delicate when required, or bustling along, but never intrusive, and lacking that "Original Instruments" edginess that some of us find irritating at times. The sound is typical Hyperion--first rate, if slightly recessed.

If you have any interest in this repertoire, but haven't found the right place to dive in, this ought to do the job.

This is a delightful record. Francis Poulenc was a composer who commanded many different styles, and these 31 songs are so well chosen for variety of length, weight, mood, and character that no two of them are alike, although some are connected through their poets or subject matter. In Four Children's Songs, poems that begin innocently become scary; they are set to music of utmost simplicity. There are outpourings of ardent passion, tenderness, joy, sorrow, longing, and nostalgia, as well as sarcastic parodies, jazzy cabaret songs, and one setting of Shakespeare in English. The performances are wonderful. White's bright, light tenor is just right for this music; he brings out every nuance and inflection with complete idiomatic identification, and his diction is perfect. Sanders, his long-time partner, provides both support and leadership, setting moods in his preludes and sustaining them in his postludes--the mark of a great accompanist. --Edith Eisler

        Customer Reviews:

        2 out of 5 stars At least it's Poulenc.......2003-05-14

Being a tenor, I know I am harsh on other voices - especially those that are stringy, strident, strained, sickly - pick an "s".
Poor Robert White should be singing lower rep at this point, his voice is really not suited to the range of some of these songs... and we all know they weren't even written for tenors... oh well - the pianist is good, Mr. White's performance isn't terrible, it's just not nice.
