The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Just as good as "Horrorscope".......2007-04-20

Every single track on "Overkill's" sophmore release is outstanding, and shame shame if you dont have this in your collection if you are an Overkill Fan. Even though "Horrorscope" and "The Years of Decay" rank up there with fans as being the "best" Overkill album, "Taking Over" deserves to be up there as well. "Taking Over" contains some brutal thrash, and in my mind was the best thrash band of the 1980's. I even liked "Overkill's" material better then Metallica's. This is a great Metal album for fans of all types of the genere, as it deserves to be called a classic.

Lets face it metal is fun and this one my friends takes the cake.This overkill album for me ranks up there with years of decay and horrorscope.The album has a nice fast pace that i loved to party with 15yrs ago and still today.To all the younger kids out there trust me this is a true classic that has stood the test of time and needs to be suported forever.

Taking Over My Stereo.......2006-02-11

A classic Overkill album is at hand, This is THE BEST Overkill album in my opinion, All the first 5 are great, but this one I think stands alone. Released in 1987, and one of the best of the year, Including Exodus' Pleasures of the Flesh and Testament's The Legacy, and others. Overkill got overlooked by many, due to them not being part of the "big four", Anthrax should have never been part of it, Overkill should have, but you could also say Exodus and Testament should have too.

This is basically the same style as their previous release album, being their debate "Feel The Fire", but the production is much better, everything is heard, but it's still got a raw feel to it.

Deny The Cross...prepare to be drawn in, a great opener, nice and fast but catchy at the same time, Wrecking Crew, one of my favorite Overkill songs, this ones REALLY catchy, and a great chorus, and love the solo!, Fear His Name, while not as strong as the first 2, is also great, a nice catchy chorus. Use Your Head just has a cool chorus, all in all, a pretty good song. Fatal if Swallowed is just a cool song, nothing to really say about it. Powersurge is another classic from Overkill, Blitz actually does a different kind of thing with his voice on this one, pretty cool, and catchy as hell. In Union We Stand, the song that made me buy the album, no double bass, but still seems to be fast!, it's like an anthem, killer! Electro-Violence is yet another, classic from Overkill, extremely catchy and cool, with cool riffs, and a wicked solo, even a small acoustic part which lasts like a whole 2 seconds! Overkill ll (The Nightmare Continues), the second of the Overkill trilogy, and to me...the best!, great riffs, great everything, check this album out at all costs!

Another solid effort from Overkill.......2005-11-06

I'll keep it short. This is Overkill's second album. It's not quite as strong as the first, though it does have some improved production. It's a bit more purely thrashy, though it's got a definite power/classic metal flavoring much of the time. Heavy, fast, catchy stuff, nothing truly remarkable but a lot of fun. Blitz's vox still have a long way to come, but he's still alright, and they use the gang vox quite nicely. 'Powersurge' is definitely the best thing here. Great gang vox in the chorus. 'Deny the Cross' is the next best thing, the thrashiest thing here, but again with a very catchy chorus. 'Wrecking Crew' is similar, if not quite as strong, and 'Fear His Name' is an interesting, somewhat more powerish piece. Some good melody in that one, and some of Blitz's better vox. 'The Nightmare Continues' is a nice continuation, but not as strong as the original 'Overkill'. Has some fine atmosphere, at times.

I'm done. Definitely not one of their very best ones, but still worth owning.

RELAXING. .......2006-06-29

I find this music can be relaxing at night. I don't know if many would consider that a good thing or not. It sounds great. I've heard a lot of bands that have had string tributes done. Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Radio head, Metallica ect. Other than the NIRVANA string tribute this is the best of the POP MUSIC string tribute CDS I've heard. I like the NIRVANA STRING TRIBUTE just a little more than this one but it's really close.

I loved the idea of strings playing Evanescence songs. I love violins and cellos and so I was very excited about getting this cd and hearing my favorite songs being played on my favorite instruments.

It was just...disgusting. It sounded off-key, and I'm nearly positive the quartet threw in extra notes. I wanted to try singing to these instrumental versions, but the extra notes kept throwing me off. I imagined that the instruments would be softer and follow more of how Amy sings rather than the drums and other instruments, but they did go more for the music rather than the singing when interpreting Evanescence's songs. The music was just too harsh. Harsh is good in rock, but not with many violins.

The string playing is absolutely atrocious.
The idea behind the disc is great, but seriously, the group is not dead; do they really need a tribute?
I thought it would be a good investment...stick with the real Evanescence disc's and decent string quartet playing - like the Emerson string quartet.

This CD is ok, some of the songs are in the wrong key (Going Under, and some others), but they tried. I mean, I can picture Evanescence's music being played classically better than most other bands...

Close, but no cigar..........2005-09-01

Being a musician myself, The String Tribute to Evanescence is an okay cd when you're just in the need for background music. Some songs like "Going Under" are pretty good, while other songs like "Bring Me To Life" are too jarring for the ears used to hearing Paul McCoy belt out his lyrics intertwined with Amy Lee's and getting a messy carchophonic scrawl on an electric violin. Of course, considering the newness of Evanescence, there isn't a whole lot of pieces to choose from unlike, say, Tool. Regardless, the quartet does what it aimed to do, though it does leave you wondering how often have they played the original songs beforehand.

Disappointing!.......2005-09-04

I have heard soundtrack scores like this one and it's the same thing: a mediocre movie trying to have music that makes it seem more powerful than it really is. What it ends up being is an overrated, over-the-top soundtrack blown way out of porportion to a movie for six-year-olds! I am highly disappointed in whoever arranged this soundtrack. It was just plain 'trying to be cool', not telling a story at all. I thought they knew better.

This is the soundtrack from an average, family-fare movie -- the kind you watch one time and forget about. The soundtrack is great, however, with lots of interesting chord changes starting in "Taking the Inside Rail", sung by Sting, with the theme continuing through many of the inspiring, African-flavored instrumentals. Then there's a Bryan Adams pop song stuck on the end for good measure. There's enough variety here for us to listen to again & again without getting bored and the whole family gives it a unanimous 5 stars!

Isham, Sting, Adams Conjure Up Racing Stripes.......2005-02-01

Mark Isham's soundtrack is probably better than the film it comes from (the odd and sometimes tasteless but still enjoyable Racing Stripes). Isham offers a series of short, world-music-influenced orchestrated vignettes (sprinkled with the whimsy found in the film's story), sandwiched between adult-pop tunes by Sting and Bryan Adams. An interesting if unusual film sountrack, perhaps useful for introducing kids to (almost) fully orchestrated music.

English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

Like their previous record, "The Scenic EP", Charmparticles take the "shoegazer" genere to an entirely different level. Not only is the musicianship incredible, but the sonic textures combine to create something bigger than one could expect from a four-piece band with a standard two-guitar/one-bass/one drummer setup. The dynamics of singer/songwriters Adam Wayne and Pam Rooney work exceptionally well together, with both of their songwriting styles working in tandem and, though distinct, never come across as two different people with different agendas. My favorite part of the CD is the third track "A/O", which finds Rooney crooning to the heavens with Wayne and guitarist Sarah Fitzgerald synchronizing spacey guitar layers perfectly. I've had the good fortune of seeing the Charmparticles live a few times, and they are somehow even better than on this excellent record. They are the most forward thinking rock band I have ever seen and I know they are on the verge of something great. Listen to the sound clips, but trust me that this is the new wave of what rock music should be.

Fresh gazer tunes and one stunning song.......2004-11-10

If you've ever let yourself get awash in Pearl by Chaperhouse, check out track #3 A/O from Charparticles. Dont try and get the impact from a short audio byte on Amazon, you gotta take in the whole song, the build is awesome. The vocals are georgeous and the song will move you. Overall the CD is good, track 1 is solid and 4 is good too, but worth it all just for track #3. Enjoy! Wagz

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

great cd.......2003-04-15

I have been listening to sizzla for a few months. I own the story unfolds, and praise ye jah, i rank this cd on the level of both. I can listen to this cd for hours. every song is good, most are great. My favorite songs have to be somewhere oh oh, king taco, taking over, and to the point, but i do not discount the other songs, they get better every time i listen. I am someone who appreciates all types of music, i say this because I once listend to punk, then i crossed over to rap and now i am beginning to appreciate reggae. I love the mix of rap and reggae and aggresive and calm. sizzla is an artist that everyone should be exposed to, whether or not they listen to reggae, his message is a great one.

I bought this album b/c I love "Taking Over," which is a great track. I assumed the rest of the album was ok at best until I had a long car ride and found I was TOTALLY wrong. The majority of this CD is fabulous. Sizzla lays it down in many different flavors on this Cd. I was cautios because I don't like too much of the rough stuff, but this album is great, with tracksranging from hip-jop beats to straight up dance. Check it out and you won't be dissapointed.

What ARE these people talking about?.......2001-10-03

I want to start by saying that I think "Praise Ye Jah" is one of the greatest reggae albums ever made. That being said, Sizzla has gone completely off the edge. His vocals sound like garbage, and he's off-key most of the time. There's also some wack falsetto stuff that he tries to do which just sounds ridiculous. There are a couple (count 'em - 2) nice tracks, but the rest is filler, and bad filler at that.

Respect to Fatis and the Exterminator crew, but Sizzla's lyrics and performances have seriously deteriorated in the past 3 years. Now its just a matter of churning out as much as he can and counting on syncophantic reggae fans to buy it all. Don't believe the hype.

Steer clear of this record.

Everyone needs to listen to the music and see it for what it is. sizzla is still holding firm on top of the reggae forum. What everyone needs to criticize, are the fassy hole labels that censor the albums. Every sizzla album is tight and should be listened to. Stop comparing his new tunes to his old ones. If you think he cant top Praise ye Jah and Black woman and child then you have not been listening to albums like goodways liberate yourself and bobo Ashanti. peace and blessings, in the name os His Imperial Majesty.

Consistently spectacular. . ........2001-08-24

This album is just great all around. There is absolutely no bad songs to be found here, no weak songs, and no songs that feel like they simply do not belong, every song is worth listening to several times. This is the type of record that grows on people, so it may take you a while before you can completely appreciate it. My favorite songs are Thought For Today which sounds a little experimental for Sizzla, I like Higher Heights, I like To the Point, Hold Her In My Arms and Streetside Knowledge is very good as well, however, my absolute favorite has to be Taking Over which is awesome. While I wouldn't call this a crossover attempt, it contains several hip-hop elements especially on Brand New, which is a decent cut. And of course Sizzla represents his religion at all times, and it is there that his lyrics are at their greatest, which is forte. Overall, like I said, it is a just an album that is consistently spectacular, a 15 track album sans a single bad song is very rare, but here it is from Sizzla Kalonji.
