Ilove Richard Smallwood I have been a fan since I was 15 years old and this CD project was amazing I went to the actual concert in New York abt 3 years ago and I was amazed then as I do now. I belong to the church where Richard Worships and I sing in the choir that he consults (when he is in town that is) But I really love his style of music as it takes u there and if you are not careful you will find yourself underneath a church bench in the spirit. Si get this porject if you have not as this wa is absolutely awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a 2-CD set. A lot of his past work is on the CD. There are several new songs that are nice but this is not his usual standard.

A longtime fan of Professor Richard Smallwood - that, I am.

Smallwood possesses an unquestionable gift; one given to him by God and shared with the world through his passion and ministry of gospel music. The journey of Richard Smallwood (in song) became apparent to the world in the early 1980's, though he'd been singing since childhood and directing choirs since age 12.

Recorded, August 2005, the initial release date of this project was rescheduled, due in part to the loss of Richard's beloved Mother, Mabel Ruth Smallwood, whom he honors and credits highly with giving him his start in the art of music.

I was in attendance the evening of this recording and the atmosphere inside of the Hammerstein Ballroom, before the recording, was electric, to say the least. You see, New York City admires Richard Smallwood and to have him agree to record a live project on the richest island in the world, Manhattan, was an event!

You will find that this effort consists of not 1, but 2 CD's; one disc is enhanced with a video performance and before closing out disc two, you are treated to 3 bonus tracks. As much as I admire Professor Smallwood, while reviewing this product, I wasn't thoroughly inspired by what I heard until disc two filled the studio. Oh yes, "I'll Trust Him" on disc one, performed by Mr. Smallwood was excellent, but that was all. Vision, Smallwood's talent laden ensemble, start the ball rolling on disc two with a rousing anthem entitled "All The Glory"; it just gets better from there as special guests, Kelly Price, The Hawkins Family and new convert, Chaka Khan take the stage.

Overall, this offering from Richard Smallwood is acceptable, for it is he who is responsible for the movement and undeniable marriage of classical music to traditional gospel music; for that he will always be esteemed. My faves on Journey: Live in New York include, "I'll Trust Him", "All The Glory", "Morning's Breaking" and "Precious Is Your Name."

I will start of by sayin I am 17 and every since I was 6 I have loved Richard Smallwood, I would beg my mom 2 get me his cds. However when I heard he was doin I live recording back in "2005" I was so excited and then I was disoppointed by the 2 yr wait. I was so excited on June 5 I got in my car and rushed 2 walmart 2 get it. When I got 2 my car and heard the cd I was felt cheated and let down. I was so lookin foward 2 this cd and it only had 2 songs I liked and a 1:30 rip off praise break I felt cheated out of 15 dollars. In sayin all this I luv Richard but da cd sucks!

Too much too soon is the m.o. of so many bands who, thanks to the fleeting fame that accompanies music-video breakthroughs, are famous before their time and has-beens five minutes later. You could be excused for thinking that's the case with Counting Crows, darlings of both MTV and VH1, who here release a double concert CD after only two studio albums. But you'd be wrong. The set, an acoustic disc recorded for VH1's Storytellers and an electric one from MTV's Live from the 10 Spot, proves how well the oft-bootlegged Crows have earned their reputation as a smoking live band. It also shows how elastic their rambling and evocative songs can be, some of which appear on both discs but in vastly different arrangements. People may tire of vocalist Adam Duritz's perpetually-wounded-soldier-of-love act, but this is one band whose success was hard-won and is richly deserved. --Daniel Durchholz

I wasn't a huge fan of the live music. Too many audience noise to drown out the otherwise amazing music. The audio never feels authentic to me. The VH1 disk is worth the money and then some. But beware. If you are a person that only wants to hear as band sing their songs exactly like they do on the album, this is NOT for you. I love the way they have changed the songs and lyrics to fit the mood that they're in at the time they're singing it. "I think we know how to play them now" probably explaines more than I could ever attempt. If you looked back at things you have done years ago, I am sure you would change them to reflect your position today. This album makes those changes and it's truly blissful to go along for the ride.

Normally I am a total purist when it comes to concerts. I like the songs to sound the way they do on the CD, and I don't like surprises. But after seeing Counting Crows live this summer for the first time, I was amazed. It didn't matter that they changed the arrangements. They were just incredible. I immediately ordered Across A Wire, which didn't disappoint. This double CD captures their live performances for VH1 and MTV. It brought me right back to this summer's concert, and let me really appreciate Adam Duritz's vocals and the band's ability to change things up. Anyone who likes this band live will appreciate this CD set.

Live music from Counting Crows! I somehow only just found this CD after being a CC fan since 1994. The energy of this performance is exhilarating. Adam Duritz is still raw, a trait I love and miss, since I think the rawness of his performing and writing has evaporated over the last five years or so.
I highly recommend this as a must have CD of Counting Crows. Two CDs, one is more acoustic than the other. My preference is for the second CD which is edgy and loud, long versions of songs I love. Sullivan Street, track 4 on CD#2 is awesome.
There are two versions of "Round Here" on this CD, one acoustic with only Adam and Dave. Both are fantastic.

I actually went to live at the 10 spot. I remember them announcing they were recording this live. It was a great show, though I had wished it was longer. Seems like the Counting Crows are lazy. I was a little disappointed they didn't play Mr. Jones. Overall great show though.

"Chelsea" is a previously unreleased track and is not part of the VH1 setlist.

"VH1 Storytellers" was released as a promotional CD by Geffen Records prior to the release of this CD.

The VH1 set does not contain "A Long December", which appeared on the original broadcast, or "Omaha", "Good Luck", and "Walkaways", which were played but not broadcast.

"Round Here", "Mercury", and "Anna Begins" were not aired on VH1.

The MTV set does not contain "Goodnight Elizabeth", "Catapult", "Mr. Jones", "Omaha", and "Anna Begins", which appeared on the original broadcast, or "Wiseblood" and "Daylight Fading", which were played but not broadcast.

"Raining In Baltimore" and "Children In Bloom" were not aired on MTV.

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

If Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band were a playground basketball team they'd be the one made up of local legends that don't have as much spring in their legs as the young bucks, but get by on guts and guile. Culled from the two Madison Square Garden shows that closed out the revived E Street Band's 1999-2000 road show, this 20-song collection deftly entwines fan favorites with fresher material, including two new offerings, the stately "Land of Hope and Dreams" and the solemn "American Skin"--the latter prompted by the shooting of unarmed New Yorker Amadou Diallo by police officers. When Springsteen and company (including both Miami Steve Van Zandt and his successor, Nils Lofgren, on guitar) look back, they temper the force of the original arrangements with ingenuity and a sense of spacing. The E Street Band in their heyday may have served up four-hour marathons, but they felt stopwatch-tight. Here Springsteen reconciles his rocker and reflective sides as "The River" curves along through a serpentine course, "Mansion on the Hill" is given a curious (albeit lovely) Hawaiian treatment, and "Born in the U.S.A." resurfaces as a deep-blues lament. The gang can still muster a take-no-prisoners attack, as witnessed by the hard-charging likes of "Two Hearts" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out." --Steven Stolder

Say what you want about Bruce "getting old", but I strongly believe that this album (which showcases Bruce in his late-40s/early-50s) puts many rockers half-his-age to shame.

All the songs are great, especially the ones that are re-arranged, such as "The River." For a special treat, Bruce throws in the rarity, "Don't Look Back."

And yet, of all the songs on this live album, I believe the most impressive is Bruce's acoustic version of "Born in the U.S.A.", where Bruce plays an acoustic 12-string. For those of you who have Tracks, but not this, trust me when I say LINYC's version of "BITUSA" makes Tracks' acoustic version look like nothing.

ONE WARNING: Though I personally have no qualms about the song-selections, some of you who want to hear the "staples" (i.e. "The Promised Land") might be dissapointed. And yet, when it comes to preferences of Bruce-fans, the term "to each his own" is definetely applicable.

Is it an extensive treasure-trove of live performances a la Live 1975-1985? No. Is it worth it nonetheless? Yes.

LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY is a live album taken from Bruce Springsteen's reunion tour with the E Street band, and the results are electrifying. This album beats the great PLUGGED by a country mile, and has the feel of a religious service, with Springsteen testifying and hollering like there's no tomorrow. The studio reunion album, THE RISING, was just as good, and proved that the reunion was not just a temporary thing. Springsteen's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since the spring of 2005 on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this CD/cassette an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars 10th Avenue Freeze-Out!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-08

I have to confess: this version of 10th Ave. Freeze-Out brought tears to my eyes. And for one simple reason. I never saw a concert of The Boss and his E-Street Band. They never came to Brazil to play. "Oh, they are too americans" people say here. Oh, what a shame. Music is an universal language and, listening to Bruce's live albums (I have all the four) and watching his dance with The Big Man Clarence Clemmons, the raising of hands of all the little preeties from coastline to the city, I was really able to understand the meaning of lots of things like companionship, musicianship, harmony, communion. Well, I wish I was a Jersey native to walk down the 10th Ave just to see Scooter and Big Man singing and dancing in the streets. Rock and roll are made of these moments.

3 out of 5 stars Redundant Maybe, but Why Complain?.......2006-02-01

I will start this review with the only complaint that can I can muster when discussing any live recording of Bruce and the E Street band. After the monumental perfection of the Live 1975-85 collection, much of this is extraneous or redundant. Springsteen is as focused and energized as always and the E Street Band plays with the same fervor that has established their reputations as an unbeatable live act. Because some of these songs have grown so familiar, though, the moody intensity of their studio counterparts is compromised, particularly on the most reflective tunes. "Prove It All Night" is all bombast, as is "Two Hearts," but they lean heavily on familiarity, while the latter suffers from a contrived ending that incorporates Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "It Takes Two." The energy is monumental, though, which helps to make the mellower songs that much more effective. "Mansion on the Hill" works beautifully, with gentle waves of pedal-steel guitar wafting behind the melody like a soft breeze over a field of wheat. "The River" suffers, though, because it is too drawn out and loses its central vision as a portrayal of lost innocence, sounding instead like the dim reflections of a middle-aged man. Springsteen is an honest performer, so I'm certain this is not an oversight. It's only that the aging process forces things to be re-assessed, and not everything works in this revised context. "Youngstown" is another misfire, with a ton of musical muscle to propel it, but without the vulnerable poignancy that made the original work so well. "Murder Inc." and "Badlands" are two songs that demand a tough, hard-as-nails energy, and they both get the treatment they deserve here.

The first few tracks on the second disk capture the true essence of Springsteen and the E Street Band. A gospel-drenched version of "10th Avenue Freeze Out" lingers for a full 16 minutes, with an extended band introduction and an ending salvo that could rupture your spleen. Following this are the collections two new songs. "Land of Hopes and Dreams" takes ten minutes to unfurl, but it proves itself to be one of Springsteen's most powerful and hopeful songs. Even though it carries a distinct pre-9/11 sensibility, it still resounds strongly, perhaps even more so. Much, much darker is the other new song. "American Skin (41 Shots)" confronts the grim reality that occurs when fear and tension collide. Instead of pointing his finger, Springsteen concludes, "We're all baptized in these waters and in each other's blood." It is our society; hence we are all to blame when a victim dies at the hands of society's representatives. It's a heavy conclusion, but not one that should be controversial, since it conveys a very simple truth.

The six tracks that did not make the HBO special finish out the album with more of a whimper than a bang. Each of these performances are good, but nothing revelatory, making it apparent why the show editors saw fit to edit them from the final video cut. As a fan of Springsteen who always looks for the best qualities in his catalog of work, I can say that this live collection is good, but there are better places to turn. If you care to hear the raw power of the E Street Band and the personal conviction of Springsteen as a live performer, pick up Live 1975-85, since it remains one of the best live documents of a rock and roll performer ever released. I saw her perform in Philly and everything that the other reviewers on this page say is dead-on. Her songs are gorgeous: beautiful harmonies, great vocal lines, thoughtful lyrics. The best moments in her songs are when the meaning of the lyrics are reinforced by beautifully dissonant two and three part vocal lines. She seems to love counterpoint, and the interweaving of two lines over some complex harmonies (at least for a pop song) makes for some great moments.

There are poets, there are singers, there are songwriters, there are musicians, there are arrangers, there are performers and then, there are artists, like Jonatha Brooke. True artists are able to gather all the tools and disciplines necessary to create in a given medium, and then, willingly, plumb the depths of their own souls to create works that are so much more than the sum of the parts, and that touch us in some of those places in our hearts, that we were sure we had completely defended.

What can you say about someone who can fly over, under and around our well-constructed emotional walls and touch us with kindness, compassion, and understanding before we know what's hit us. Someone who can remind us of the myriad places and times we've betrayed and abandoned ourselves, and each other, and still have the love and wisdom to forgive and accept us.

Jonatha Brooke is a true Singularity. Life is one way before you experience her work...and changed forever afterward. She allows us to see what is possible in the musical performing arts genre, and how discipline really is the key that unlocks true freedom of expression.

Once in a blue moon, someone comes along, and reminds how things could be done, if there were just enough time, enough patience, enough commitment and enough courage to do it "Right".

Having watched Jonatha, perform as a soloist and with various band configurations, in a number of venues over the years, I can tell you that she's even better live than on the Live DVD...which is saying a hell of a lot. The DVD is spectacular, in every way. It is, quite honestly the best live recording I've ever heard or seen, and I've been in the biz for 40 years. What's most impressive to me, however, is the exactness and precision in every detail of every song. There are no mistakes and there is no jamming here. Every tune is honed and sanded until it is the perfect vehicle for the message it is intended to convey. Then it is performed that way, the best way she and her band know how to perform it, night after night after night. This is the ballerina in Jonatha. Imagine improvising the steps in Swan Lake. Unthinkable.

One could think that this might make it difficult to stay interested enough in the music to make it exciting to play, over and over again; but the imaginative crafting of each song allows it to carry both the audience and the performers to different places each and every time one hears them. The density and complexity of what is being expressed here, make each exposure a journey of new discovery. Haunting melodies that are impossible to get out of one's head for days.

Spontaneity comes in the joy and exuberance of sharing, with each band member and the audience, a very precious gift, in the best way they know how to wrap it. She pours herself and her soul into the songs, and, as a result, like crystals, the songs are able to hold, store, and reflect that energy and intensity, and feed her...and us...every time we listen.

It is of paramount importance to Jonatha that her audiences feel like participants in the events she choreographs. She disassembles the wall between audience and performer with wit and humor and playful banter. She shows us, instead of telling us, "If I can do this...so could you, in whatever medium is right for you. Show up, be present, do the best you can every time you have the opportunity." And in her lyrics:

"You're the one evading hope, side-stepping every inkling
That the good guy, the early bird, the one who tries, the one who tries Again....WINS"

My wife worries that I'm obsessing or that I have a crush on Jonatha. What's actually true is my complete respect and admiration for Jonatha's commitment to excellence and to Life, as expressed in her ever-growing body of work. I only hope she records another fifty albums. My wife will have to deal with it. She knew, after all, she was marrying a crazy musician.

At a recent show in Boston, someone asked me why Jonatha wasn't a Huge star already. I responded that I though the reason was that her songs actually made people Feel things, and that we've decided, as a culture, perhaps as a species, that Feeling is not something we like or are willing to do. Thank you Jonatha...again and again and again, for encouraging us to do it anyway.

I found this to be an excellent, career spanning package. Featuring songs from most all periods. JB and the crack team of musicians deliver on all levels. Great, blending harmonies. Dynamic instrumentation.
I have been a fan since her days as part of the Story. You could find Jonatha's name as singing backup on many songs throughout the 90s.
Her strong songwriting and playing are the perfect compliment to her vocal prowess.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the concert on the DVD. Jonatha shines with her charm and wit that makes you appreciate her talents even more. The venue provides the live vibe wihtout losing the intimacy.
As a bonus, there is a CD of the concert so you can enjoy the music while you're on the move.

Hearing Jonatha Brooke live makes me realize what a talented musician she is. The arrangements and harmonies are complex and really interesting. I'm not crazy about all the songs, but I very much appreciate her as an artist with something to say. I also like the DVD of her live performance.

I've been a fan of Jonatha's for a long time. By rights, this woman should be a major star, but her music is just a little quirky for the mainstream (which is one of the reasons I love it). Having the DVD included with the CD is just so wonderful! Definitely a major bargain.

Since the original Broadway cast recording of Stephen Sondheim's Follies was a truncated affair that turned out to be both a disappointment and a disservice to a brilliant show with a brilliant cast, this 1985 concert performance from New York's Avery Fisher Hall set out to record the whole score, a set of pastiches of old songs and songwriters as performed by a cast of faded stars and the visions of their younger selves. The result was a star-studded roster backed by the New York Philharmonic led by Paul Gemignani, with principals Barbara Cook, Mandy Patinkin, Lee Remick, and George Hearn, supported by the likes of Carol Burnett, Liliane Montevecchi, and Liz Callaway. Even these stars can't quite match the original cast, and the results are somewhat uneven--from Cook's yearning "Losing My Mind" to Patinkin's you-love-it-or-you-hate-it schizophrenia in "Buddy's Blues." Other highlights include Elaine Stritch's wry "Broadway Baby," the two young couples' interplay in "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through," and the electrifying audience reactions to "Beautiful Girls" and "Who's That Woman?" (A documentary video was released, but unfortunately, it did not contain the complete show.) As a bonus, this two-CD set includes 45 minutes of instrumental music Sondheim composed for the 1974 French film Stavisky, including two melodies that had been cut from the original production of Follies. --David Horiuchi

I have very definite views on this - in other words, my word rules, ignore the others. Random thoughts - pay no attention to those who disparage Mandy Patinkin singing "Buddy's Blues." This is an album of brilliant pastiche songs, right? Patinkin is giving us the old vaudville, split week in Jersey, performance. Of course he's over the top! Outstanding. However - sorry, I love Barbara Cook, and it's a lovely rendition of "Losing My Mind," but no one, I repeat no one, does it like Dorothy Collins from the original cast. Dorothy Collins, the Hit Parade lady? Come on! Well, OK, I don't know how she did it, what she pulled up from inside herself, but it tears your heart out. The song belongs to her. "Beautiful Girls" is ... well, if you're a woman (or not!) I dare you to listen to this and not get up and pretend you're strutting down an imaginary runway (particularly if your kids are in diapers and you haven't been out of the house for 82 weeks and my husband better start helping out or I'll GO MAD)... Sorry,got carried away there. I could go on and on (remember, it's been 82 weeks), but those are just three highlights ... oh, and the overture, oh, and "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" and heartbreaking George Hearn and absolutely terrific Lee Remick and of course, Elaine Strich!! and you've got to get this so we'll enjoy it over and over together, vicariously, and I better stop now, it's almost spring, maybe I'll get out. A girl can hope.

The original is my perferred version, even though it is very watered down. Here, all the songs are complete, but it comes out uneven somehow. The really great performers here are Carol Burnett and Barbra Cook. They really shine. The rest do mediocre performances. Out of the rest, Lee Remick, and Elaine Strich do a great job. Buy this you want the "complete" version and four stellar performances, but the original is the one to get performance wise.

If any one album makes a case for FOLLIES is is this set of FOLLIES IN CONCERT. It is not the definitive FOLLIES, but about as close as we're likely to get. The sound is very VERY good, especially for a live recording, but as such there is quite a bit of applause on this disc.

Producer Thomas Shephard originally taped the dress rehearsal so he would have quiet endings for all the numbers but when the audience nearly tore the roof off Avery Fisher Hall, he decided that eliminating applause would negate the event that led to the album. So, he comprmised and used applause after the "follies" numbers but not after plot songs. If you didn't know this you might wonder why "Beautiful Gilrs' gets such a huge hand and the next song "don't Look at me" seems to be met with stoney silence.

The cast is sensational. Perhaps not in the same league as the originals but a fine "revival" cast. Lee Remick and Barbara Cook are ideal as leading ladies Phyllis and Sally and its a joy to hear Cook's glorious voice in "Losing My Mind." Mandy Patinkin effectively uses his energy to put a new spin on "Buddy's Blues. " I know some object to his over-the-top style but it was effective on stage. Elaine Stritch has fun singing "Broadway Baby" and Carol Burnet makes the most of "I'm Still Here." Really, there isn't one bad track in the whole package.

Completists may quibble with the slight cuts here and there..the last bit of the Overture (including a segment of "Can That Boy Foxtrot") has been cut, as has "Bolero D'amour." The original montage ending of "Rain on the Roof/Ahh Paris/Broadway Baby" was dumped, and the spoken interludes in "Loveland" have been re-arranged. NONE of this will impair your enjoyment of this wonderful show.

As a bonus RCA has filled out the second CD with the soundtrack of Sondheim's score for STAVISKY. Many cut songs from FOLLIES were used in this film score, so its a natural tie-in.

The booklet has all the lyrics but no synopsis to place the songs within the context of the story. It is a minor flaw in an otherwise first rate package.

This is, in my opinion, the best recording of Follies you can buy. The quality of the recording isn't the best for reasons of staging and the lack of wireless mics back then, but who cares? Take a look at the list of famous singers in this cast. A big plus of this recording is the complete overature that wasn't on original. Barbra Cook is absolutely wonderful. Her voice doesn't age! I like the fact that they raised the key of a few of Sally's songs for Barbra since Sally is supposed to be the soprano of the two female leads anyway. Babra sings every single song with feeling and vocal perfection. I feel that her rendition of Losing My Mind is the definitive version of that song. Her final, "you said you loved me," is gorgeous and really shows the pain that Sally is feeling in her dramatically perfect interpreation of the song.

Lee Remick is wonderful as Phyllis. She has the icy beauty that really makes her song, Story of Lucy and Jessie really make sense. Her version of Could I Leave You? Is great! She is just really great.

George Hearn is absolutely wonderful! He sings every song like a god and it's nice to hear him sing something other then Sweeney Todd, which he tended to scream a lot in. I adore his voice and think he is perfect for the character of Ben.

Mandy Patinkin is so annoying. He emphasizes things that aren't supposed to be emphasized and he's just ridiculous in all of his songs. His voice isn't the problem, it's his high voltage, uneccasary dramtization that turns me off.

The supporting cast is wonderful. One More Kiss sounds so much better when it's sung by Opera singers, and these two are amazing. I mean look at their names and you'll go, Oh my god! Elaine Strich's interpreatation of Broadway Baby is very different for she truly sees the true irony of the song and portrays it very well. Everyone else is wonderful also. This CD is a must buy!

Agitprop political sensibilities have seldom made for great rock music, even in the hands of a genius like John Lennon. Or perhaps we should say especially in the hands of Lennon. Coming as it did on the heels of Imagine, arguably his most balanced and artistically accomplished solo record, this album-length harangue (with a "bonus" live disc that felt more like a booby prize) takes on all the de rigueur victims and causes of the day, from feminist hardships ("Woman Is the Nigger of the World") to American injustice ("John Sinclair," "Born in a Prison," "Attica") and the Irish Troubles ("Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Luck of the Irish") and comes off as tedious as it is ham-fisted. Though it features many of Lennon's stellar Plastic Ono Band sidemen (Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voorman, Eric Clapton, Jim Keltner) and the presence of legendary producer Phil Spector at the helm, none were brave or wise enough to yank the soapbox from beneath Lennon just once during the sessions. A telling chapter in any Lennon character study, though more an exercise in caricature than an album. --Jerry McCulley

Political statements that explicitly reflect their time period tend to have a very short shelf life. Here's an example. Okay, I love protest songs, but nobody in 2007 wants to hear about John Sinclair (especially not with John going "John Sin-Sin-Sin-Sin-Sin-Sin-Sinsinsinsinsinsinsinsinsinsinclair"), Angela Davis or Attica State. It doesn't mean a damn thing anymore. Think that's bad? Yoko's songs aren't much better. I have nothing against her - her voice doesn't bug me at all (other than the occasional random wailing), and I have a lot of respect for her uncompromising experimental attitude. I just don't think pop music is her thing (Even then, she contributed some real winners to Double Fantasy), and neither Sisters, O Sisters nor Born in a Prison really stand out to me (though to be fair, they're better than Sunday Bloody Sunday or The Luck of the Irish). I will say, though, that I really like We're All Water, one of her better songs. The live jam is simply insulting - a quarter-hour of Yoko wailing (Don't Worry Kyoko), an overlong, overloud, stoned run-through of Cold Turkey and an awful blues cover - Well (Baby Please Don't Go). There are two, maybe three, songs I like on this mess: the feminist anthem Woman is the N#%!#! of the world (not intended to be racist, instead used as an allegory for "slave") - even then, the huge production is overbearing. Phil Spector must be dragged out and beaten, because he's easily the most overrated producer in history. I also like the aforementioned We're All Water, and about half of New York City. But it quickly peters out into a horrible boogie-rocker without... I don't know, a BRIDGE, a CHORUS, or anything ELSE to break the monotony. To make things worse, the Elephant's Memory Band are among the least talented musicians I've ever heard, Bobby Keyes excepted. Even then, he overplays on this album. And I'm a fan of his.
You'll probably want to listen to this album once, just to see how bad it really is. After that, I wouldn't blame you for filing this away for years to come.

John Lennon wrote several great songs during his solo career. As a whole, however, his solo albums are a far cry from the best Beatles albums. Sometime in New York City maybe shouldn't be called a Lennon solo album as half of the songs are by Yoko Ono. One of them, "Sister, O Sister" is the best song on the album and all the others are among the best. Lennon's best song on the album is "Woman Is the Nigger of the World". Unfortunately American PC people completely misunderstood the message of the lyrics and only saw the N-word which was considered a taboo. One reason that makes the album so good is the co-production by the great Phil Spector. It sounds more like a real Spector production than the other Spector produced Lennon albums.

The original LP release of Sometime in New York City included another LP with a live jam with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Only a part of this jam is included on this CD release. The CD also includes the single "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" / "Listen the Snow is Falling" as bonus tracks.

another fine restoration supervised by Yoko Ono. I think this was a commercial and career disaster for Lennon when it was released at some sky high price during the 1972 election campaign. Now it's an interesting period piece. Feminism was the hot topic that year, and Lennon sang about it like a recent convert in "Woman is the Nigger". Lyrics get silly but the vocal and production are first rate. Elephant's Memory was a nice backing group with at least one radio hit of their own ("Mongoose" I think). Yoko's "Sisters O Sisters" is lyrically quaint and musically very witty as it sort of evokes the Phil Spector heyday. And I love the singing couple on "Born in a Prison" although the lyric gets very silly. And Yoko does ruin "Luck of the Irish" with her "blarney." And her willful avoidance of western pop singing tradition can seem very strange. She also misses rhythm and meter on the "Water" song. The best Lennon numbers from this record are on the new soundtrack about his persecution from the U.S. federal government. But you'd miss the great live vocal on "Baby Please Don't Go".

Basically Ono went for broadly general artistic statements and Lennon wrote songs as almost a visceral response to heavy handed violence practiced by various governments. Unfortunately his fascination with all things "instant" prevented him from rounding these protests into strong songs.

For me, and I may be alone on this, the comedic highlight of the album is in the live portion when John is tearing through "Baby Please Don't Go" and in between the Lennon's phrases Yoko injects her, and I use the term lightly here, "singing". It just has to be heard to be believed. You could not make this kind of stuff up. You could NOT make it up. The remaster sounds good and the big surprise is that this album rocks. I go around humming "Attica State" sometimes and there are a lot of nice musical touches, the slide guitars on John Sinclair or the chord changes of "Woman is the Nigger of the World". The new CD is cut (this does not include all of the original album) but does sound pretty good. I had an original 8-track of this album, still laying around the house somewhere, and I don't think the cuts will be missed much unless you just have to hear everything.
This is a very mixed bag but John is in spectacular voice. If anyone else had done this album it would have been a total bomb (why does this remind me of Elvis' early 1960s recordings). This is not the place to start digging into Lennon's albums, "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" would be my vote for that, but it does have enough merit to venture a listen to, a very quirky cause-of-the-moment kind of album.

New York City and Luck of the Irish, & Attica State aren't bad either; The dated, topical nature of these songs may turn some people off..
The politics may turn off some people too, I don't much like "Woman Is the Nigger of the World" because it's abrasive, but that's what Lennon was trying to achieve on that song: shock value!
(If you're a right-wing Beatle fan don't bother with this album. I've never understood your peculiar breed. And so you don't feel offended, I don't like your Lawrence Welk either, though Pat Boone's "In a Metal Mood" is funny!)

Not to be confused with the dire Sometime in New York City, this live document was recorded at Madison Square Garden on August 30, 1972--Lennon's last full-length concert performance--but remained in the can until 1986. There's nothing definitive here (with and without the Beatles, Lennon did his best work in the studio), but it's still a real treat to hear passionate live renditions of underappreciated solo numbers such as "Woman Is the Nigger of the World," "Well Well Well," and "It's So Hard," along with righteous run-throughs of "Instant Karma" and "Cold Turkey." John and Yoko's tag-team evisceration of "Hound Dog" is admittedly a little hard to take, and the backing band (Elephant's Memory) rarely catches fire, but the man himself is in top form. Kind of makes you sad that he didn't get out more often. --Dan Epstein

John really puts the exclamation point on "I don't believe in Beatles" with this brief but amazing performance. His voice is harsh, the band is sloppy, and John turns every song (including "Hound Dog") into a rebellious therapy session. It's that very unpolished rawness that makes this set so good. At this point (1972) Lennon had released solo albums that were intensely personal statements reflecting his involvement in primal therapy, and here onstage he really goes back to the rock'n'roll he grew up listening to -- his own songs are screamers and shouters mostly, owing more in their style and subject to Little Richard than to Buddy Holly. It shouldn't be surprising that his best songs here are full of venom and bite, abrasive and noisy. Yes the album is short but there's no room for filler here, just passion, as a live show ought to be. It's definitely not The Beatles, and it may not be very pretty, but "Live in New York City" is real rock'n'roll -- live, loud and a little scary. Get this before it disappears from the catalog altogether.

these two concerts were not recorded with the intention of a major release...just a famously famous man recording for posterity. John had been rehearsing a good bit in the few days before the concerts and his voice was a bit ragged by this point. Again, just a couple shows for charity, not a planned release. If you want John at his best live, listen to "Live Jam" for "Cold Turkey" and "Baby Please Don't Go", or watch the Mike Douglas Shows. As it is, we get to hear John performing "Hound Dog" much as he would have on a drunken Hamburg night at the Kaiserkeller...just passion.

A lot of the time live albums are not good because they sound thin, and/or the studio versions of the songs are just better. With this album the performances of the songs do not sound thin and the quality of the recording is excellent. The songs sound neither better nor worse than the versions that appear on the studio albums, they just sound different. Most of the songs are tinged with a saxophone, which works well. The saxophone in "Imagine" sounds especially cool. The backup band, The Plastic Ono Elephants Memory Band gels with Lennon and plays everything fine. The song selection is good, with highlights from Lennon's first three post Beatles albums, "Plastic Ono Band", "Imagine", and "Sometime in New York City". There is also a cool version of "Hound Dog." Lennon's singing on this album has been criticized. I think that he sounds very good live. He may not sound as smooth as he does on his studio albums, be he still can carry all of the songs fine live. My only complaint with this album is its length. It could have been a bit longer. Perhaps bonus tracks from other shows could have been added. Still, it's a strong album nonetheless and most fans of Lennon will dig it. There are also cool pictures and liner notes by Yoko Ono that are in the booklet.

It's hard to put John down, but this cd has some serious... issues. Where to start...
Firstly, Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band is comprised of a group of guys who,... They aren't well rehearsed, they aren't good playing together. The sax is all over the place! Every time he plays its just a mess! No subtlety...
John is busy screaming. He hardly sings. Its a shame, because he had such a haunting voice. Instead he's just...uck.

But on the plus side, Well Well Well is pretty good, and Yoko doesnt do much. Instant Karma is such a tight song, but the drums are all over the place. Those drum breaks are just emberrasing ...John tries to be funny, but it doesnt work.

John just wasn't a live artist. In the Beatles and on his own, he didnt seem to like playing live. He was a studio man. He was fantastic in the studio, he wasn't on stage.

And Come Together just didnt sound right. None of the songs really sound right. He just can't seem to get into it...

I love the music, but was VERY unhappy to be unable to play this CD on my computer. The DVD side works okay, but I can't load this to itunes on my macintosh. And I can't load the DVD to my computer and store this disk at home. If I had it to do over, I'd buy the plain vanilla CD!

Agitprop political sensibilities have seldom made for great rock music, even in the hands of a genius like John Lennon. Or perhaps we should say especially in the hands of Lennon. Coming as it did on the heels of Imagine, arguably his most balanced and artistically accomplished solo record, this album-length harangue (with a "bonus" live disc that felt more like a booby prize) takes on all the de rigueur victims and causes of the day, from feminist hardships ("Woman Is the Nigger of the World") to American injustice ("John Sinclair," "Born in a Prison," "Attica") and the Irish Troubles ("Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Luck of the Irish") and comes off as tedious as it is ham-fisted. Though it features many of Lennon's stellar Plastic Ono Band sidemen (Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voorman, Eric Clapton, Jim Keltner) and the presence of legendary producer Phil Spector at the helm, none were brave or wise enough to yank the soapbox from beneath Lennon just once during the sessions. A telling chapter in any Lennon character study, though more an exercise in caricature than an album. -Jerry McCulley

I avoided buying the album for years and years. The songs got little radio play, and the cover just didn't make it for me. It struck me as "this is one album where Yoko's pulling all the strings". When I finally bought it along about 2000, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. Like many of the reviewers, the album features some good stuff from Yoko.

Angela, John Sinclair, and Born in A Prison provide haunting melodies to rival George Harrison's most melancholy moments.

I will have to agree with the general review of CD2. I do love the live version of Cold Turkey more than the studio version. And, "Well (Baby Please Don't Go)" almost redeems the entire second CD. A real gem.

Thanks to reading these reviews, and the CD notes a little more closely, I now realize that George Harrison appears on the Live Jam - will listen more closely for him today. I may even go and buy the remaster and see what new stuff is there.

Hey, what's the deal with "Live Jam" and George's "Apple Jam" anyway? The Beatles were good arrangers, songwriters - but not great solo instrumentalists. The only way George and John could have pulled this stuff off, in my view, was to have Paul and Ringo in and not all their other mates. They need each other for this sort of thing.

I do enjoy listening to the CD in its entirety. But hey, John's an ex-Beatle and has much higher standards than this! Buy it if you are a Beatles completist, pop history buff, or John Lennon nut that kinda likes Yoko. The rest of you, don't risk it.

This record is so bad, it's embarrassing to think it was ever recorded, must less recorded by a rock legend of Lennon's stature.

The politics are hokey-dopey, the musicianship sloppy, the attitude humorless. Yoko's "tortured child screech" mars nearly every cut, making the album refuse on those grounds alone. The only listenable song is Lennon's homage to his new home, "New York City" on which Yoko does not vocalize. The live cuts are poorly recorded, overlong, half-baked jams, in the manner of the extra disc on Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album.

It's astounding to think this is the same musician who wrote all those songs on the White Album. But then again, Dylan followed up his best 60s work with some horrid early 70s releases too.

I'm gonna make a bold statement here, and say that Yoko ono has the worst singing voice in the history of mankind. Maybe it's not true, so if you can find one that's worse let me know. Still, somehow, on disc one there is actually a...(here we go)good yoko song. AAAA!! that's right. I was pleasantly surprised to not here her screeching and wailing, like a cow in heat, and instead actually trying to sing. The song is "Born in a Prison," and is probably my favorite song on the album. As for the Lennon songs, they are pretty good, as most of his solo stuff is, lacking a tad bit of originality, and with too many horns. What's with lennon and the horns? All the songs are social protest songs, which i have no problem with. I just thought i'd let you know. It's very 60's though it is from the 70's. At least it's ideas. The second disc is awful and full of yoko wailing; it hurts the ears. You can't help but skip it. The songs are long, and full of so much pointless jamming that it drags on. Truly, the songs are just not enjoyable. Sort of a mesh of monotiny. I spelled that wrong, but anyways...overall, not bad

I haven`t heard this since around 1983 or so .I loved this record as a teenager in the 70`s ,I wasn`t into all the jam stuff back then,maybe now I would like it.Angela is a great track as well as John Sinclair,Born In A Prison is a great track too.I just bought this cd and can`t wait til it gets hear so I can hear it again.

Coming straight after the album that some people consider to be John Lennon's best, it was bound to be disappointing, but, sadly, John had lost a lot of his inspiration for this album and it comes off quite poor.

It starts off with Woman Is The Nigger Of The World which, although a good rock song, is hardly up to the standards that the Plastic Ono Band and Imagine albums had set in the previous years. The lyrics aren't all too memorable either and it seems as if John was really forcing himself to write during this time.

Two of his more memorable songs on this album, I think, are New York City and The Luck Of The Irish. New York City's a fun little rocker and while The Luck Of The Irish is known for some very, very bad lyrics, it also has some pretty good, harsh ones too. My favorite being:

"You blame it all on the kids and the IRA,
as the bastards commit genocide"

Simple, but good.

In my opinion, it's Yoko who shines more on this album. Sisters O Sisters is one of her best feminist songs, and We're All Water is a great way to end the album. Sadly, even those can't save the album, but there's still another disc to go.

Disc 2 takes from two live Lennon performances. Cold Turkey and Don't Worry Kyoko are taken from the Plastic Ono Band's second live show in 1969 (with extra musicians including George Harrison and Keith Moon), while the rest of the songs are culled from a surprise live appearance John and Yoko did with Frank Zappa in 1971.

The first two songs are probably the best live stuff that John and Yoko ever did. They're both loud and leave you drained after hearing them, which is the sign of a good, powerful rock song, at least I think so.

The rest is good, but a little shaky. Zappa was always a great live performer though, so he can bring out the best in John sometimes, and Well (Baby Please Don't Go) is a great old rock and roll cover. An interesting note about this live show is that there are three different versions that exist. John's version which appears here, Zappa's version on the 1993 Playground Psychotics album, and the original, unedited form, which can be found on bootleg CDs and videos.

Sometime In New York City is always considered to be the worst John Lennon album and, sadly, I can't argue with that. It definitely represents a slump in his career. Understandable, considering his phones were being tapped at the time, and he was in danger of being deported, but still sad. I only recommend getting this if you're a devoted lennon fan, although the first two tracks of the Live Jam disc are quite rewarding.
