2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-08-19

I like the music, but the sound quality is terrible. I bought this CD because it was released in 2003, but there is ZERO improvement in sound quality from previous older tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Enough with the damn compilations!.......2005-06-11

First of all I like Vangelis very much. However I have had it with the way that his music is being released. We are consistently given compilation releases (usually of the same tracks that are on other releases). WHAT IS THE POINT????!!
All the more frustrating is that Vangelis has a ton of unreleased music that many fans like myself have been after for years. Sorry the bootlegs on Ebay just don't cut it.
Where's an official release of "Cavafy", "The Bounty", "Francesco", and "Bitter Moon". Where is all the still unreleased music from "1492", "Blade Runner", "Antarctica" and "Chariots of fire", yes he released soundtracks for these films but they were sadly lacking.
Unfortunately we will probably have to wait for Vangelis to demise before we ever get these tracks, if even then.

4 out of 5 stars worth buying, has seven good Vangelis songs.......2005-05-25

Some may complain that this is not a definitive Vangelis CD. Nope, it is far from being that, but it has seven good songs on it that make it worth purchasing for less than $20. Those seven good songs are: Hymne, Alpha, Chariots of Fire, Missing, Pulsar, Petite Fille de la Mer, and L'enfant. Of course, those are just my personal favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Vangelis' Best Known Songs.......2004-06-10

It's hard to keep track of the number of compilations of Vangelis. Off the top of my head, I can think of "The Best of", "Greatest Hits", "Themes", "Portraits", and "Reprise". But they never got it right, something was always off, or one period or another of his career was not covered. Now comes "Oddisey: The Definitive Collection". While it may be pushing your luck to proclaim anything as a Vangelis "definitive" compilation", given his prolific output over the years, I am here nevertheless to tell you that this compilation is as good as it will get.

"Oddisey: The Definitive Collection" (18 tracks, 78 min.) in my opinion truly does compile all of Vangelis' best know tracks and greatest hits. Most of the tracks on here will sound immediately familiar, many because they are movie themes (Chariots of Fire being the most famous of course, but also The Missing, Blade Runner, thankfully containing both the beginning and end titles, Mutiny on the Bounty, and others), and other that became well known in commercials (Hymne, L'Enfant, among others). There can be no denying the creativity and talents of Vangelis. There are 2 bonus tracks, "I'll Find My Way Home" and "State of Independence", the 2 best known tracks of Jon & Vangelis, a nice touch to the album.

I share my frustration with other reviewers here that there is tons of great Vangelis music out there that remains unreleased. To be sure, Vangelis deserves a box-treatment of rare and unreleased tracks. But if you are looking for a single-disk overview of his best known songs, look no further: "Oddisey" is it. Released in Fall, 2003, it is a nice way to commemorate Vangelis turning 60 (say it ain't so!).

5 out of 5 stars Bantock's Celtic Symphony.......2006-07-25

My husband & I heard this piece on our local classical music radio station and decided right then (at 11:30 at night) that we had to order the CD. Since it arrived, we have been playing it (and the other Bantock CD that we ordered - the Pagan Symphony) almost non-stop. We love celtic music and these two CD's add so much to our collection. The only down side is that the dynamics go from pianissimo to fortissimo quite often, so it's hard to find the perfect volume setting, but who cares! it's beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars A very Straussian Hebridean symphony.......2004-06-12

Like another reviewer, my initial exposure to this music was through an NPR broadcast. I quickly purchased the CD and have enjoyed the echt-Richard Strauss "Hebridean" symphony many times. Like the other music on the CD -- none of which has the lasting effect of this symphony -- it heaves and rolls with all the emotions of a sea journey. For that reason, I burned my own CD, mating this version of the "Hebridean" with Handley's performance of Britten's "Four Sea Interludes" from "Peter Grimes" and his recording of Frank Bridge's "The Sea" suite. I think this places the Hebridean symphony in more appropriate company than with Bantock's lesser music. Still, this CD makes a wonderful introduction to the music of a composer not well-known in America. If you buy it, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Bantock: Hebridean Symphony/The Sea Reivers.......2003-08-17

I heard a portion of this work (Hebridean Symphony) on public radio a while back. Having never heard of Sir Granville Bantock, I was curious enough to seek out and purchase the CD. I keep asking myself "How could such a wonderful, exciting work be kept so obscure?!?" The Hebridean Symphony is an excellent work, worthy of much higher prominence in the Music world.

The "3 Minute surprise" on this album?:

"The Sea Reivers" is a thrilling, roller-coaster ride of musical enjoyment. Having heard only the Handley version on Hyperion, I cannot imagine any other version having any more excitement or fire! Bravo!!

5 out of 5 stars An incomprehensible neglection of an outstanding composer.......2002-05-25

It's absolutely astonishing how a composer of the range and impact of Sir Granville Bantock has been forgotten for so long, not only at concert halls but also (and this is even more surprising) by recording labels.I agree in every word with the opinions of previous Bantock's lovers reviews, but I want to add a few more things. I have also a huge classical symphonic CD'S collection, but among them all I consider a few of them as authentic jewells, hidden treasures which must be urgently unburied. This is one and, probably, the most valuable of them.It is impossible to describe the sense of emotion, grandiosity and splendour this "God of Symphonic Music" is able to display in each of his, fortunately, prolific compositions, and specially in his Hebriddean Symphony, which is, undoubtedly, one of the master works, not only in the History of Symphonic Music but in the History of Music.Mysterious woodwind passages preceed others of sublime brass magnificency and glory, all involved in a lyric ,epic and romantic wave;a dream come true thanks to the brilliant sound of the RPO under the baton of Vernon Handley.
Each new listening becomes a new delight for the ears, and deep emotions arise once an again, making this CD a unique experience, unforgivable to miss by any symphonic music lover.
I'm absolutely delighted with Hyperion, the RPO and Vernon Handley, as they keep recording Bantock's music, and I hope they will be doing so. I'm craving for more Bantock!.

5 out of 5 stars A sleeper...a delight!.......2000-06-02

I, too, have a very large classical CD collection, with my tastes running primarily to Mahler, Shostakovich, Brucker, and Sibelius - though I recently added Rubbra to this group of frequent musical companions. My brother gave this CD to me for Christmas a few years ago, but it was within the last year that I decided to really give it a close listen. I now consider it to be one of those pieces (like Mahler #4, Shostakovich #5, and Sibelius #2)that always sound fresh to my ears - always feel like musical home!

Though I love the initial three pieces on this CD (particularly the lovely Celtic Symphony with its gloriously peaceful opening), it is the Hebridean Symphony that is on my Desert Island list. From its brooding, dramatic opening (clearly preparing the listener for a meaningful experience) to the lovely climax and ending, this music is always totally involving. The recording is spectacular - the dynamic range is huge, and the brass the percussion make some huge punctuations; it is hard to find just one listening level for the car, in fact!

Don't miss this high point of not only British classical music, but all of music, in total! Now if only it would start showing up in local concert halls....

An all-star lineup of classical and pop musicians (including Kurt Masur, Andre Previn, Ray Charles, and Emanuel Ax) come together for a good cause on this disc (the American Cancer Society gets all proceeds). Most of the music here was written by contemporary instrumental composer Tim Janis, known for his uplifting, sweeping orchestrations. On the disc, these works are given sympathetic performances by the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Paul McCartney's impressionist composition "Nova" and the lush romanticism of Billy Joel's "Elegy: The Great Peconic" also get noteworthy symphonic treatments. Classical fans may be dismayed by these simple, sentimental themes that seem tailor-made for soundtracks, but there's no denying that this is all beautiful music. Previn loosens up his sleeves for a jazzy solo take on Cole Porter's "Why Shouldn't I," while Ray Charles gives a relatively straightforward vocal contribution to "Amazing Grace." This may not be earth-shattering music, but it's for a great cause, and it's all well-played. --S. Quinn

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Music for the Heart and Soul.......2005-09-11

I first purchased this CD to play for my father during his battle with cancer. It had amazing, soothing, uplifting and restorative qualities. We played and replayed it, over and over. I give this CD as a present to anyone that is facing hard times. A percentage of the proceeds from each sale of the CD goes to cancer research. Hope it brings you peace and hope for your mind and spirit, too.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Janis Does It Again!.......2001-10-21

I have been following the works of Tim Janis for several years and am blown away by the beauty of his music. This compilation by various artists fills one's soul by the depth and beauty of the music. Yes, it sounds like great music for movie soundtracks, but everytime I play it for others who have not heard Tim Janis' music, they immediately want a copy! It's THAT good. FYI: Call your local PBS station for information about the upcoming special, "Tim Janis Live From Lincoln Center" which has all of the music from this CD performed with the NY Symphony. I was fortunate to be in the audience for this fabulous performance. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars This Cd deserves a double 5 star rating.......2001-08-11

I can't give enough praise to this collection of enjoyable, peaceful, soothing, and relaxing music. I have 3 favorite CDs and this is one of them. I play this one so much that I'm afraid it's going to get wore out. I can't say enough good about this one other than....get this CD and drop it in your sound system, grab a cup of mandadin orange tea, sit down and soak up this delicious music.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Music.......2001-02-18

I was so excited about this CD when I heard about it...I got a copy right away, and the music just blows me away. I think it's wonderful that people can contribute something to help others. The melodies are so beautiful and at times I was brought to tears. This CD defines hope...I highly recommend it.

      Album Description

An old time string band and then some. Without the least amount of hesitation, they have been known to strum, pluck, pound on, blow into, blow over, squeeze or shake a significant variety of instruments. Some of those instruments include (but are not limited to): Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Fiddle (a.k.a. violin), Concertina, Flute, Slide Guitar, Piano, Bass, Whistle, Saw, Kazoo, Ukulele, and Nose Flute.

While watching the Olga Symphony perform, one can't help but get the feeling that perhaps these people are having way too much fun. Yet they do seem to subscribe to a line quoted on their second album: "Music is much too important to be left in the hands of professionals." In spite of this, their most recent CD has been played many times on Canadian nation wide CBC-2 radio, and they continue to receive favorable reviews from such notable sources such as Dirty Linen Magazine and Anita's Mother.

One of their most difficult tasks (besides trying to be serious once in a while) is to answer the question: "What kind of music do you guys play?" The type of music they play includes Old Time fiddle tunes, Celtic folk, old obscure ballads, swing tunes, everything from Jimmy Rodgers to Irving Berlin. Sometimes they will sing a little known song from an old movie, and occasionally they will perform an original tune. Someone said: "eclectic" is too specific a word to describe their music.

I bought this CD on Orcas last Thanksgiving when we couldn't get in to the Olga Symphony concert because it was sold out. I have it in my car and listen to it whenever I want to improve my mood. It's a lot of fun to sing along with although I still haven't mastered all the words to "I'll see you in C-U-B-A!"

5 out of 5 stars Great DownHome Fun!.......2002-05-14

I first became aware of the Olga Symphony on a trip to Orcas Island last year when I heard them live in concert. They were so much fun to watch that I had to have the CD, and it has become a favorite around our house. There's something for everybody here, with solid musicianship backing great vocals. These folks know how to have fun with music, and the spirit is catching. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars One of my alltime favorite cd's.......2007-02-13

I first purchased Deirdre of the Sorrows in March 1999. My local classical station was playing it on Saint Patrick's Day. I was completely swept away by the haunting melodies. The first track is breathtakingly beautiful. It is too bad Patrick Cassidy does not get much more noteriety here in the states, with the talented composing skills he displays.

      5 out of 5 stars Haunting indeed.......2001-10-15

The last reviewer called it "haunting." That it is, and I would add the term "addictive." It is partly the times, the post Sept. 11 era, but in emotional impact about life, death, fate, and tragedy (it includes no lighter moments) Deirdre ranks right up there with the end of The Ring, and there is no higher praise.

      4 out of 5 stars Not overbearing.......2000-08-28

Poor Deirdre! It is prophesized before her birth that Deirdre will be the catalyst for many deaths. Her story comes from the 12th-century Book of Leinster, part of the Ulster Cycle. Found in the New Age section, Patrick Cassidy's composition is classical. The music is often dirge-like. What would you expect of a score that begins with a foretelling of evil and follows the life of Dierdre through exile and slaughter? It is dark, and melodic ... and haunting.

For those who missed out on this disc first time around, here is a second (and cheaper) chance to discover the glowing music of Granville Bantock (1868-1946). The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, an often-underrated ensemble these days, excels in this emotional music. The players seem positively inspired by that most musical of British music advocates, conductor Vernon Handley. The superb, clean, and clear recording highlights the lush, tender textures of the Celtic Symphony (scored for string orchestra and no fewer than six harps!). Handley ensures that the indications for each movement are faithfully followed: the lightened string tone for the third movement highlights the marking of tenerezza, and the final Largamente Maestoso fully lives up to expectations. The Witch of Atlas is an extended tone poem (with as delicate an opening as can be imagined). The Hebridean Symphony is the heftiest work on the disc and is presented with the utmost conviction. Throughout, Handley takes extreme care to ensure clarity of texture, so that music which could easily become congested instead carries just the right amount of weight. Bantock has a clear, engaging, and convincing compositional voice. And this disc is just the right place to discover it. --Colin Clarke

4 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.......2000-07-07

This cd is great. It has all of the songs that I wanted to use for my wedding. The only thing that I didn't like is that the bridal chorus is played by the organ. I personally prefer the harp.
