3 out of 5 stars Don't own any of his music but............2006-11-22

Saw Eric open for Steve Vai in New Orleans a year ago, every song sounded the same, too busy, too fast, you can play fast and all over the place if you're clean: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, otherwise you need to space it out a bit. More notes doesn't mean better, see Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Don't get me wrong I like fast, love fast but not every song for an hour, mix it up show me something else.

I am a music fan so I may yet buy an album or two just to compare his recordings to the live experience.

p.s. Steve Vai's live Renditions of The Crying Machine and Dyin' Day were mezmorizing. Yes I'm still stuck on Fire Garden, his best album ever.

5 out of 5 stars powerful guitar playing and vocals.......2006-08-29

Upon hearing Eric's music, I purchased this CD as well as his others immediately. Some fine guitar chops and raw vocals.

3 out of 5 stars Only because..........2005-11-01

Eric's music is 10 times better live than it is on record (expecially vocals). Ive seen him enough, along with opening for steve vai in Houston, and he is an **INCREDIBLE** guitarist especially slide so be wary of the last reviewer. But I do have to agree his full potential isnt dealt forth in the album- not enough blues with a rock base, lacking power in voice, but look for Eric to fix his studio woes in his next album

4 out of 5 stars Innovative yes, stunning guitar player NO.......2005-09-28

the fact is I keep hearing the words "blues" when people refer to this guy. this is rock people! Yes he plays a resonator guitar, yes he occasionally plays a blues tune. He is a Rock guy through and through. As far as being a great slide player, he is decent but there are a million guys that could burn him into the ground. Ry cooder, Johnny winter, Rory gallagher,Joe Bonamassa,Bill Perry, peter green, billy gibbons, etc. Slide players are a rare breed and most people see someone playing with a slide and because they never see it automatically say "this guy rocks!" I do think what he does is innovative and it is keeping great american resonator companies like National guitars in the spotlight where they belong, but what he does isnt all that different talent wise than a band like the white stripes. He deserves respect for playing resonator guitars and taking blues to the next level but get real, he isnt a guitar god by any means.

someone wrote on here that he opened for steve vai and that meant he must be good, steve vais carreer isnt exactly blooming right now.

i gave this CD 4 stars because even though it isnt blues it is still a solid musical experience. the band is solid and tight and I love the fact that he plays National Resonator guitars.

the fact is though if youa re looking for blues rock in the vein of guys like Stevie ray vaughn, joe bonamassa, clapton, etc. this is not by any means in that category. If you like the more modern and progressive sounds of blues influenced bands who take it just a step over the line into rock like the white stripes, black keys, even newer zz top material; then you may get into this stuff.

if you go into this CD expecting blues you will be let down.

4 out of 5 stars The Future is NOW !!.......2005-05-17

"Blues Purists" be damned,,,,,,crawl back under your Rock with your scratchy old 78's.

Eric can play alongside the best of them.
You don't tour with Steve Vai unless you're one of the Best.

Eric is the Future of Modern Blues.

The latest cd is more Aggresive than the previous 2 offerings.
A little Harsh at times but the "Bluesy" undertones are there.

This cd is Highly Recommended.

The Essential Andreas Vollenweider surveys the Swiss harpist's career from his 1981 worldwide debut, Behind the Gardens, Behind the Wall, Under the Tree..., to 2000's Cosmopoly. In 1981, Vollenweider was a breath of fresh incense capable of creating sweet, poignant melodies with an electro-acoustic harp that reached from deep bass lows to shimmering highs. As Vollenweider's music progressed, world-music elements came to dominate his sound. Sometimes, as on "Belladonna" from 1982's Caverna Magica, the fusion resulted in world-music kitsch as Middle Eastern and Brazilian vocals wafted over snappy lounge rhythms. By the time of 1984's White Winds, Vollenweider had coalesced his multicultural approach into sweeping suites. The Essential Andreas Vollenweider concentrates on his upbeat, jazzier material, leaving the more textural, emotionally ambiguous pieces aside. Nevertheless, there's a breadth of vision represented on this CD that shows a musician always searching. Vollenweider's albums are meticulously recorded, with each instrument given its own space, creating an encompassing sense of architecture. But the remixes here improve the sound dramatically, especially on the earlier works. For the Vollenweider fan, there's nothing new here, but for the uninitiated, this is a good place to begin exploring the works of a New Age pioneer. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have Harp Album.......2003-07-01

Andreas Vollenweider has created great music and this has his best songs. The only other album I own by him is "Dancing With The Lion". My dad bought the cassette a long time ago, I listen to it sometimes but not a lot. Andreas Vollenweider is the second harp player I heard, the first was Hillary Stagg and I can see a big difference in their music mostly because of the background instruments.

All of the songs on the album were good but I found "Wanja The Wanderer" a bit strange and so did my dad when he listened to it, so I don't think I'll get his album "Kryptos". Here are my favorite songs: Behind the Gardens, Flight Feet and Root Hands, Belladonna, See My Love, Moon Dance, Dancing With The Lion, Night Fire Dance and Cor Do Amor. The only reason I gave the album 4 stars was because some songs sounded a bit strange.

The bonus material on this CD includes: songs with new mixes, mulltimedia cd including the music video of pearls and tears and a new song "Pace Verde"

If you don't own any albums by Andreas Vollenweider and are thinking of buying one I would recommend this one the most but if you already have this one I would recommend "Down To The Moon".

I hope you enjoy his music!

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Experience.......2002-03-28

This composer has never let me down from the very first time I heard his CD entitled, Down To The Moon. I was in a restaurant having lunch, and even though I was having a conversation with three other people, I was constantly drawn to the music playing in the backround. I asked the waiter for the name of the composer. After lunch, I ran out and purchased the CD. That was several years ago. I now have all of his works, and find that each one is as moving as the first time I listened to him. With this album, you'll get a sampling of his work, that will keep you coming back for more.

3 out of 5 stars Less Than I Expected.......2001-09-16

I have most of Vollenweider's CDs already, but was willing to purchase this one because I was interested in the remixed versions. In my opinion these "new" versions have not changed enough to justify the price of the CD. However, if you intend to purchase only one Vollenweider disc, this would be a good one. My recommendation: purchase a used disc.

4 out of 5 stars Not just "essential Vollenweider", simply essential!.......2001-04-29

Made in CAN in 2000, Serial# SK-89507, Playing Time 72:47

First of all, let me just say that, contrarily to what's stated on the cover artwork, there is NO multimedia section on my copy of this disc.

Still, this 12th album by AV covers material from all his albums, except his first (which, contrarily to popular belief, only half of which is on "The Trilogy" set), "Eolian Minstrel" and "Live".

The songs presented here have been remastered and remixed by AV and long-time percussionist collaborator Pedro Haldemann, and tend to focus on his more joyful genre. His early albums have also been remastered a few years ago, but the selections here contain some rich textures: his earlier works are a lot more new-age and "natural" than his latest offerings. "Stella" is the only track from "Cosmopoly", an otherwise bland and generally "ethnic" album: I would even suggest you listen to the sound clip from that album, and you'll be amazed to see what sounds can come out of his harp: much closer to classical guitar than harp.

An excellent starting point for the novice; if you enjoy, start gathering the albums chronologically, as you'll notice a somewhat significant departure from "Book Of Roses" forward.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2001-04-10

I have to confess that in all the years I've been listening to new instrumental music, I've avoided Andreas Vollenweider because I really don't like harp music. When I received a copy of "The Essential Andreas Vollenweider" for review, I kind of thought, "Oh great - another harp CD." Vollenweider's is such a huge and well-respected name that I decided that this would be an opportunity to educate myself. Many "best-of" and "greatest hits" albums are compiled by labels without any input from the artists, but this collection was chosen by Vollenweider himself from albums dating from 1981-1999. Several of the older tracks were remastered by Vollenweider, so this was a great chance to get to know a bit about this artist. It really didn't surprise me that quite a few of the songs were familiar from radio play, but I was surprised that many of them I never would have guessed as being played on harp. Vollenweider developed his electracoustic harp, which has quite a different sound from the standard acoustic harp. In addition to the harp, Vollenweider sings and plays wind instruments, guitars, accordion, keyboards, percussion, and "special fx". I was also surprised at how much I found myself enjoying this album! Musical influences can be heard from all over the world, and most of the music is lively, rhythmic, and infectious. I especially like "Moon Dance", "Dancing With the Lion", and Pace Verde", but the album as a whole is a wonderful sampler for those of us who are relatively new to Vollenweider's music, and is an excellent "best of" collection for his longtime fans. I will definitely be adding more of his music to my collection! The CD is multimedia-enhanced and contains the music video to "Pearls and Tears". Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars No originals, just 'Trane.......2007-06-08

The irony of the Prestige John Coltrane albums (about 19 in all; I owned them all when they first came out) is that there are no originals. I am told (I think by Ira Gitler) the reason is that Prestige owned all the publishing; so, he saved the originals (he certainly had them in volume) for his later Atlantic recordings. In any case, the music was marvelous; don't overlook the ones released under Red Garland's name. We are lucky that this music was recorded and saved in such a short time allowing consistency. It's still timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Genius.......2006-03-19

I only wish I had the opportunity to travel back into time to bear witness to the brilliance that is John Coltrane when this recording had first came out in 1957(I believe). No one was even close to what or where Trane was going-his path was more of a spirtual quest that few have dared traveled.Trane was at height of his mastery of is instrument and with the supporting cast(Tyner,Garrison & Jones),it was a collective that has yet to be matched or equaled in any way. This one of the reasons that I'm a fan today.

5 out of 5 stars BLACK PEARLS: essential Coltrane album.......2005-09-20

wow. a truly underrated album (considering that i'm only the 5th person here on Amazon to review it) and one (of many) of Coltrane's true genius recordings. the playing here is jaw dropingly amazing and tightly focused. the compositions are fast fast fast and executed with confidence, style, and unlimited class. highly recommended for lovers of great jazz and amazing music. highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2001-09-23

This album was recorded at the height of Trane's "sheets of sound" period. The opener, Black Pearls, starts off as a fairly typical hard bop tune in a standard A A B A form. However, shortly after Trane starts his solo his genius becomes apparent. Trane's solo is a miracle of light and sound. He furiously attacks the tune with an unbelievable ferocity. He spins long lines that are rhythmically and harmonically incredible. I can only imagine Byrd and Garland trying to follow him, slack-jawed in amazement.
After Trane, Byrd collects himself and actually turns in a nice solo that contrasts nicely with Trane's fire-breathing one. His lines are laid back but sufficiently exploratory.
Lover Come back to Me is a fast tempoed tune that is ok and Sweet Saphire Blues features Garland on an extended solo turn. Overall though, Trane's transcendent performance on "Pearls" alone is worth the price of the cd.

5 out of 5 stars Sapphire Sweet.......2000-09-15

Many of Trane's Prestige recordings don't vary so much stylistically. All are great and different, but Trane's sheets of sound method boast upon much of his soloing during this period.

There are two elements that set this disc apart from the rest. One, a diffent, more funky, almost Latin percussion sound that sweeps the tempo along nicely.

Two, the trumpeter Donald Byrd, who adds a nice element of a more subdued exhuberance. On his solos, he seems to be competing with the ever penetrating sheets of sound style that Coltrane was using. And he keeps up.

"Sweet Sapphire Blues" is one of my favorite Trane numbers of this period.

Masterful.

Black Pearls: The Poetry of Maya Angelou opens with the poet reading hard words: "No, the gap-legged whore on the eastern shore, enticing Europe to come into her"; "kneeling mothers picking undigested beans from yesterday's shit"; and "what a pity, the pity has folded in upon itself." The poet's rawness of vision and power seem capable of moving mountains. Some 30 years ago, when these words were recorded, Angelou was fierce, vital, justifiably angry. All this may not jibe with the weeping you did in junior high when you read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It may not mesh with your vision of the gentle, elegant lady you know as the highly visible mentor and friend to Oprah Winfrey and the first-term inaugural poet to President Clinton. Yet know this: Angelou, a speaker of truth, not only survived cruel injustice but used words to burn through it and come to grace. As she says, "My crime is that I live to tell," and we desperately need her trespass in order to live with what we know and are unable to give voice to. --Paige La Grone
