5 out of 5 stars correction to the correction.......2007-02-08

Sorry, nothing about Broken Skin, but the Jeff Beck's version of Nadia DOES use a slide for those effects (I've seen it live and it's on Youtube) and not just bends and whammy bar.

5 out of 5 stars Correction to the note about Jeff Beck, immediately below.......2005-02-26

Just to set the record straight...Beck's not playing "Nadia" with a slide... he's actually playing all those melodies and bends with the whammy bar. That's how much of a MF Jeff Beck is...

5 out of 5 stars Finally, something worth listening to..........2004-08-31

I first bought Nitin Sawhney's "Prophesy" album and felt it was OK (3 stars), but held off on buying anymore of Nitin's albums. What a mistake! I should have started with this one (Beyond Skin). Honestly, I can say that there is not a single song I don't like on this CD (thus, the 5 star rating). He blends Indian instruments and voices so well with all types of dance beats and base lines that it doesn't even sound like fusion, but just a new type of music. While I like all of the songs, the ones that stand out are "Letting Go", "Homelands", "Tides", "Nadia" (which Jeff Beck also did a version of on the slide guitar on his album), "Serpents", "Nostalgia", "Beyond Skin" (haunting guitar plus vocal part at the end). See, now that's alot of good songs on one album. The rest are also good, but, they take some time to grow on you. They also fit well with the theme of the album which seems to be something about Nitin discovering his identity (English vs. Indian). I'm kind of glad I heard it 5 years after it was released because pop music is just really bad right now and I needed something to remind me how good music can be.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding.......2004-06-22

Pure brilliance! Never thought this would ever work for me, but then a boyfriend played it to me. It's perfect for intimacy and sets a really mellow mood, but at the same time has the underlying message about War. "Beyond Skin", "Nostalgia" and "Letting Go" are definitely the stand-out tracks on this beauitful album.

5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

Product Description

"Originally released in 1992 on R.E.X. Records, this is the very first Circle of Dust album ever released... Without a doubt, Circle of Dust was the quintessential Christian industrial group. And long before Slipknot was painting by numbers, Scott Alberts (aka. Klay Scott, Celldweller, Klayton) band was busy redefining modern metal with a sound that bled sadistic instincts with the sheer terror of industrial-minded mayhem. From the radioactive burn of the opening track, "Exploration" to the turbo charged tirade of "Nothing Sacred" through the abrassive allure of "Senseless Abandon," CoD delivers a molten mass of metallic fury that leaves most contemporaries trembling in comparison!"

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS AN EXTRAORDINARY METAL ALBUM FEATURING VOCALIST JORN LANDE.......2006-08-16

THE METAL OBSERVER gave it a (9.5 of 10 possible points) and says this about it....

"Wow, what an album. Who'd like to hear finest epic-stuff in tradition of "Headless Cross" or "Tyr" (both BLACK SABBATH) and one of the most gigantic vocalists of the scene at the top of his career, this one is yours. His name: Jörn Lande, a devil of a fellow, who sings with ARK, THE SNAKES, MUNDANUS IMPERIUM and MILLENIUM. But with BEYOND TWILIGHT he delivers his masterpiece and is somewhere between Dio and Tony Martin, but not a iota weaker! The songs all are rather doomy and extremely bombastic. The direction I had mentioned in the beginning is OK, just darker! This album is oozing with emotionality and pure passion, it is mystic and dramatic. With one word: killer!

PROGRESSIVE WORLD says.....

Essentially, this disc contains just about every aspect of what a progressive metal fan wants to hear. In addition, you also get a very well thought out story that is truly mesmerizing and haunting.

PROGRESSIVE ARCHIVES gave it 4.40 out of 5 possible points
and said..... "Excellent addition to any prog music collection"

4 out of 5 stars The beginning..........2005-04-03

This is the first release by Scott Albert (aka Klay Scott). He is credited with putting Christian industrial on the map and giving it an identity. The tracks listed by Steven A. Burton are from the 1995 re-release of this album, not this original 1992 release. Klay wanted to redo this release because he was never satisfied with the quality of this original. I highly recommend picking up this title, and also checking out Klay's latest work under the band Celldweller. Here are the tracks from the 1992 original:

1)Exploration
2)Dissolved
3)Nightfall
4)Nothing Sacred
5)Twisted Reality
6)Technological Disguise
7)Consequence
8)Demoralize
9)Rational Lies
10)Senseless Abandon

      Album Description

Skin Alley's 1970 second album To Pagham and Beyond is a continuation of the progressive-rock-jazz-fusion brilliance of their first release Skin Alley. Long and complex intricate compositions with fluid musicianship, fueled by unique vocals, were their modus operandi. Skin Alley were pioneers of the jazz-rock-fusion sound and would disband in 1973 after a too short career and four albums. Even though their journey was brief, the music they made is certainly a viable measurement of importance. The validity of their advanced artistry speaks for itself, including them as a generous and important contributor to the development of a genre. Available for the first time as a single CD, To Pagham And Beyond has been remastered from the original studio tapes.

      Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Deeply moving and provocative, Nitin Sawhney's Beyond Skin chronicles this British East Indian's struggle to find his identity as a citizen in a country that is not his ancestral homeland. Sawhney intelligently explores such diverse topics as identity, race, history, and atomic weapons through the eyes of a devout pacifist, while creating a musical backdrop where trip-hop, drum & bass, soul, and world music coexist peacefully. --Kevin Cole

      Amazon.com

A compulsive and unclassifiable mixture of Indian classical music, flamenco, killer acoustic drum & bass, hip-hop, jazz, and soul, Beyond Skin is one of those albums that vibes in its own excellent orbit. A profoundly humanist album, Beyond Skin should further enhance Nitin Sawhney's reputation as one of Britain's most exciting and imaginative musicians. It may be based on concepts--a challenge to ideas of identity and nationality--but it's also a fluid, meditative atomic jam with the string quartet Instrumental, Marque Gilmore, Jayanta Bose, Steve Sheehan, and the nephews of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, among others. Sawhney creates some incredibly moving pieces at a slow, elegiac tempo--"Homelands" is a deep bliss-out tune in which the astonishing playing of Instrumental combines in ethereal beauty with chanting tablas and the call-and-response vocals of Bose. On "Broken Skin" and "Immigrant," Sawhney scales new heights: political songs with exhilarating melodies and sing-along soul hooks. Yes, this is music full of rare invention in which atmosphere and austerity coalesce--a music vividly constructed around textures and rhythms, glimpses, and echoes completely in tune with the tenor of our times. This is a Britpop album from the mold of ADF, Drum FM, Massive Attack, and Primal Scream. --Maxine Kabuubi

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Beautifully reflective..........2002-02-03

Almost impossible to classify, Nitin Sawhney's "Beyond Skin" is a bold, deeply personal musical statement. Sounds boring?... well think again for this record is crammed full of haunting melodies, atmospheric arrangements, excellent singing and tight playing. It's subtext - India's testing of its first nuclear weapons (and all that implies for a UK Indian like Sawhney) - provides the backdrop for an innovative and, with one exception in "The Pilgrim" (a bizarre venture into Indian rap), wholly successful fusing of Indian raga & late 90's club mixes. Few "concept" albums really work but this inspired attempt achieves its objective through the sheer quality of its production: in particular, Sawhney's clever use of excerpts from radio & news broacasts to emphasise the album's chilling theme and to contrast this with the often intense beauty of its music. You don't need to share his views or his culture to enjoy it and you won't find much else like it out there but, once it gets its hooks into you, it will repay with enormous listening pleasure. File under "beautifully reflective"...

      5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2002-01-15

      Sublime ...

All Nitin's other albums are also brilliant. There are 5 in
all - starting with Spirit Dance (plus many remixes). I
      suggest owning all of them.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply... wonderful.......2001-07-10

This is pure beauty on a disk. Slick but real, filled with powerful imagery and beautifu lvibes, this one didn't leave my CD player for months. In the trip-hop vain but with plenty of india-real-world thrown in. You don't want this disk. You need it.

3 out of 5 stars Nitin Sawhney is not so perfect after all.......2001-05-07

If you have ever listened to his first album, the MASTERPIECE 'introducing...' (Which I count as one of the best albums ever made, serious!) this album sounds like Nitin smelled money and went on the wrong commercial road of creating weak and boring r 'n b songs that the mainstream audience likes so much. Ok, if you ditch mellow r 'n b, you'll like this album too. 'Introducing...' sounds truly more honest, more deep, and way more Indian-underground, while half of the songs on 'Beyond Skin' are more aimed on Witney Houston fans than on Asian Underground-lovers. If you don't know Nitin yet, ditch this album and go for 'Introducing... Nitin Sawney' which I consider to be one of the best asian underground albums ever. But be aware, you will be greatly dissapointed if you have his first album and expect the same high quality on this second...
