Authentic Style Sounds.......2006-08-15

This was one of three steel drum CD's purchased recently, and was the best of all. Great sounds...clear with good acoustics. Sounds really mellow coming from the speakers in our back yard paradise. Very authentic Caribbean sound. Just what we were looking for to give our outdoor entertaining a fun atmosphere.

Music to plan your cruise by.......2003-06-25

I'm on my second copy of this cd... it is still my favorite of any steelpan cd I have. It strikes just the right balance between fun and relaxing, and it makes the time between cruises go by much faster. :-)

Exellent early vintage calypso at its best!.......2006-02-17

This is a marvelous album, not only are the songs fantastic but you see all the elements that made early calypso what it is as it emerged as an international art form. Take the 1st track "when a man is poor" and track 9 "if you're brown" both are scathing attacks on poverty and subtle classism respectivley, that was rampant at the time and fortunately is less prevalent (although still existent today), what is also typical of these songs and the genre of that early era was the use of established jazz idioms and popular music the two songs' melodies could easily be waltzes! "cricket champions" shows the improvisory roots where claypsonians would often have impromptu battles at cricket matches, creating lyrics and melodies on the fly with only a banjo and drums as back up! The rest of the songs are equally enjoyable "trouble in arima", "old lady walk a mile and half" like most of Kitch's songs lend themselves easily to steel band arrangments and orchestral manipulation. A cheeky, classic showing his beautiful, classy and tasteful use of double entendre (something lacking in many of today calypsonians)is found in "Doctor Kitch" The other songs e.g "Nora" have equal value and are also great for just dancing.

All in all this is fantastic album on all fronts, as a window into to the past showing Kitch's genius, the evolution of the art form and the early influences that forged calypso into what it is today and as a great way to wine the waist and dance.

How to Telelay.......2004-07-30

This Kitchener compilation is a gem with all the obvious reasons why Kitchener's musical compositions were always favored at Carnival by steel pan orchestras. Pannists trained on Calypso, Jazz and Tchaikovsky always choose Kitch! He seems the only composer who consistently makes songs that lend themselves to the complex arrangements of an orchestra. This is the most sophisticated side of Calypso music, but the lyrics are as loaded with innuendo and social critique as ever.

The Man Who Made Harry Famous.......2001-05-09

After many years of traveling the Carribean, from St. Lucia, to Trinidad and on to Haiti, the music joins your soul. Lord Kitchener is the classic Calypsonian. His songs have inspired the mighty Harry Belafonte an we the perapatetic tourists. Long may he sing the story of the Carribean people!

Here we see more of his classics that show his genius. The standout songs are "my pussin" "take your meat out muh rice", "no more calypsong" a lovely social critique, "no melda" and "mama this is mass"

This is a *great* collection of Kitch's stuff. If you are a fan of The Master, you can't go wrong with this, or Vol 1.

The original recordings absolutely make this a collectors item.

excellent and exquisite.......2006-02-19

This ablum is OUTSTANDING. Jerico gets you moving and you dont stop till the last song. All of the songs are classics in showing not only Kitch's writing and arranging skill but also the evolution of early calypso, a few are truly iconic of Kitch's skill jerico, pan in A minor, pan in harmony, fever, sugar bum bum, symphony in G, the symptons of carnival, the bees melody, give me the ting, the spirit and tribute to spree simon.

Well worth the money

I remember Kitch's music as a child in the caribbean.I am now completely in awe his talent and of this compilation. (especially Vol.3). It is wonderful uptempo music. Like they say in the Caribbean "yu got to wine yu waist!" no question whatsoever!. If you love good Jump-up music this is the one for you. (Definitely Not the wave yu hand/flag/rag nonsense of today)

The earlier volumes (1 and 2) were a little bit before my time. but Vol 3 is absolutely magnificent with more modern accompaniment. Nevertheless it is interesting to see how his music evolved over the years. My three year old daughter and I are dancing to this CD all the time! She loves it.

This is some of the best arranged calypso music ever made, no wonder the Steel-pan men love it so!

Kitch you are so missed. Each song on the CD is timeless.Thank you for still bringing joy to the world even after you're gone!

The Rough Guide series is generally an outstanding way to learn about a new genre by sampling tracks of the highest musicianship.

Nothing against Calypso and Soca- these are both dynamic and expressive genres. But this compilation reflects the modern trend towards downsized horn sections replaced by synthesizers. The problem with synthesized horn sections- and I think this is beyond just a matter of taste- is that the authenticity of the sound is limited by the current state of the art technology. So rather than sounding timeless, this music is dated by its technology. Rawness and energy are lacking on this compilation, which could best be described as cheesy.

Great collection!.......2000-07-30

This is a great intro to some great music. Rough Guide makes wonderful travel guides, and their foray into music upholds the same high standards. There are some real stand-outs on this collection, and overall it's a very nice introduction to this infectious music. An ultimate party album!
