Sir Colin Davis has long been considered the world's finest Berlioz conductor, and over the years, Philips has released all of the composer's major works with Davis at the helm. Now, they're all here, in a 24-CD box, and it is an astonishing achievement. This treasure trove consists of the definitive, available readings of Les Troyens, Béatrice et Bénédict, and Benvenuto Cellini; a wonderfully energetic, passionate Roméo et Juliette; a Te Deum which is huge yet clear and not over-the-top for its own sake; Les Nuits d'été with different singers (of varying ranges in different songs), as Berlioz wanted them performed; the young Dame Janet Baker superb in Herminie and La Mort de Cléopatre; a relaxed, sweet Enfance du Christ; a Requiem which could knock you over; a Damnation de Faust which is both lyrical and exciting; a performance of Lélio which almost makes sense of that strange work; a Symphonie Fantastiquewith atmosphere and thrills; along with 7 overtures, 5 songs, and more. In addition to the moderate price, the packaging is such that the 24 CDs takes up less space than just the earlier releases of Cellini and Troyens together. This is one-stop shopping at its best. --Robert Levine

A tempting treasury, but only a few performances are great.......2007-02-03
Dropping down a notch in quality, we have an elegantly played Romeo et Juliette by the Boston Symphony, superbly recorded, that has few rivals for refined virtuosity. But after a while Seiji Ozawa's approach seems to lack depth and meaning; he's skating over the surface of the musical drama, however brilliantly. Sharp and brilliant also describes Myung-Whun Chung's contribution, a Symponie fantastique, two overtures, and the Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens, all with his well-trained Bastille Opera orchestra. Chung is to the manner born in Berlioz, but so are greater conductors in these works, including Munch and Markevitch.
At about the same quality level I'd place the Mort de Cleopatre, a dullish early vocal scene sung with plushness by Jessye Norman, and Kiri Te Kanawa's Les Nuits d'Ete, which is ravishing in terms of sheer vocalism but otherwise vacant. Daniel Barenboim's slack conducting does the piece no favors, either, which holds true on a much larger scale for his Damnation of Faust. This is a typical Barenboim product, full of lush sounds, excellent singing, big-scale orchestral work, but leading to a meager artistic payoff. Barenboim's Faust isn't remotely competitive with Markevitch, Chung, Solti, Pretre, and others in this work. It's great to hear Domingo in the title role, but the conducting is so routine that I'm not sure the overall experience is worth it.
We get odds and ends of varying quality: the rarely recorded Tristia done superbly by Boulez, an uneven batch of songs that previously appeared in their own double-CD set (a chore to listen to in its entirety, despite the occasional gem), and a pedestrain Harold in Italy conducted by Lorin Maazel in Berlin, a performance that DG surely could have bettered by looking deeper into their vaults.
In all, I can't see investing in such an uneven collection except at super-budget price. If you do a little searching, all the best things here can be gotten separately, and the lesser recordings pale by comparison with classic Berlioz from Colin Davis, Charles Munch, and Igor Markevitch.
Berlioz with immaginative variety.......2003-10-30
The jewel has to be Ozawa's unsurpassed Romeo and Juliet. This 1976 studio recording had its birth at the Tanglewood Festival and features excellent soloists (Julia Hamari, Jose Van Dam, and Jean Dupouy), a very competent choir, and of course the reliable Boston SO. The recording is of outstanding quality. It seems cleaned up a little from what I remember of the CDs from the mid 80s; much more spacious, less muddy sounding. I especially like the chorus in the hushed night scene.
Barenboim's Damnaton is perdictably Furtwangler-like in tempo, and again features top notch singers in Fischer Dieskau, Jules Bastin, & Placido Domingo; Yvonne Minto is probably not in the same class with the others, but she's more than acceptable.
Levine directs a well recorded and balanced classical-sounding Requiem, and Abbado is more than competent in the Te Deum.
Chung's Fantastique is fun and enjoyable, if not first-class.
The rest of the works are very commendable, if not top-of-the-class.
In short, you can't go wrong for the price, and if you love Berlioz' Romeo, you've got to get this box just for the Ozawa gem.

The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
Awesome musicality.......2006-07-26
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.
Fabulous? Yes!!!.......1999-09-13
I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.
As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

Compilation release.......2005-11-24
If you even slightly enjoy listening to the soprano voice, you will love these two luscious singers. Soprano duets are among my favorite classical music selections. Lott's clear, strong voice rings with authority and joy. Murray provides perfect harmony and occasional counterpoint.
I prefer the first disk (Sweet Power of Song) because it is more balanced and seems to represent the sopranos' favorite selections. However, disk 2 (On Wings of Song) has Rossini's delightful Cat Duet which is worth the price of both CDs as performed by this amazing duo.
Whether you buy this compilation set or the individual releases, I promise that you will love them and keep them near your player all the time.

Very nice interpretation of unfamiliar songs.......2006-04-20
But, this is not the reason you want this album. Unlike Von Otter's collections of Grieg songs, I find these really engaging. You WANT to listen to these songs over and over again, much like you want to hear your mother's lullaby over and over, when you can't fall asleep.
To the not-Otter fan, I also recommend the fact that unlike a collection of straight Chansoms, there is a very nice variety in the background instrumentals, which includes Maistro Levine and the Berlin Philharmoniker, a solo chello, a Stockholm opera chorus, and back to Levine. The notes are nice, but I miss a rationale for why the very talented Ms. Otter wanted to record these particluar works.
Try the Crespin recording first.......2006-03-10
Why? Otter has a lovely voice but she is an erratic musician. Musically complex phrases -- of which there are many in "Nuits d'ete" -- seem to confuse her (this is even more true in Otter's recording of Sibelius songs) and the interpretation of course suffers as a result. In comparison, Crespin is highly musical and always succeeds in making the songs into highly fluent, meaningful strands of melody. Her voice is excellent as well. So buy the Crespin instead. (I also prefer Ansermet's conducting in the older recording.)
One reason to get this Otter disc is the version of "La captive", a song for voice, cello and piano, which is an unusual find and I think a very lovely work.

A missed opportunity.......2006-03-22
Eleanor Steber is well-known for her impeccable interpretations of American repertoire, especially of works by Samuel Barber. (She is the dedicatee of his wonderful song-fantasy "Knoxville, Summer of 1915" and created the title role of his Pulitzer Prize-winning opera "Vanessa". Barber had originally written the role for Maria Callas who was replaced by Sena Jurinac. Steber took the role days before the premiere, when Jurinac fell ill. The glorious result can be heard on an amazingly well-sounding double CD set featuring the complete original cast of the premiere under the baton of Dimitri Mitropoulos.) Steber was also an accomplished interpreter of the European operatic tradition, leaving us what is probably the most moving and uniquely satisfying account of Puccini's heroine Minnie, the "Fanciulla del West", and an equally impressive Elsa in Wagner's "Lohengrin" from a 50's Bayreuth production. Her abilities as a Puccinian are also evident in her impersonation of Cio-Cio-san, a role in which I find her more gripping than Callas and on the whole as satisfying as Victoria de los Angeles under Gavazzeni. I haven't heard her "Tosca", a Met production from 1959 featuring Carlo Bergonzi as Cavaradossi and George London as Scarpia, but some critics range her achievement second to Callas's.
During the 1950's, Steber faced strong competition at the Met, with Callas, Tebaldi and Nilsson being preferred by the company's new manager, Rudolf Bing. She retired from the stage in 1961 to pursue an impressive second career as a recitalist, excelling in an enourmously broad repertoire that ranged from Baroque to modernity and from German Lieder to American folksongs and Broadway musicals.
Steber had a big, beautiful voice with a blooming upper register. In her interpretations she compared great intelligence and musicianship with a natural and sensual, sometimes slightly girlish appeal. One reviewer once perceptively called her voice "blonde" and compared her musical and personal impact to that of Grace Kelly. I think the comparison suits both ladies well.
Yet, much as I would like to recommend this particular album, I have never been able to warm up to it. Caveats are varied and many, but one word comes to my mind as summing up much of my uneasyness: theatricality. Berlioz's "Nuits d'été" are an early milestone in the evolution of the French "mélodie". What these songs need to reveal there seductive powers is a sense of elegance and a certain lightness. Steber's and Mitropoulos's approach is a much too operatic and heavy-handed one. The extremely broad tempi don't serve the musical narrative well, and for once Steber's magnificent voice seems ill-suited to the task - it is simply too weighty. The whole enterprise seems disappointingly "unFrench", thus especially damaging the appeal of the lighter songs like "Villanelle". It doesn't help that Steber's French diction is far from idiomatic: She spits out the "P"s and "T"s as native speakers of English or German are wont, and from time to time there is even a trace of a chewed American "R". On the whole there is too much grandeur and too little idiom in these otherwise charming songs, and the dragging tempi border on becoming boring.
The other items on this disc are arias from cantatas by Bach and oratorios by Handel, Haydn, and Mendelssohn (all sung in English). The results are variable, but I feel that I only warm up to the ubiquitous "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth": It at last offers an opportunity for the dimensions of Steber's instrument to be shown to good advantage. The radiant purity of her voice is in fact heavenly, and her phrasing is as tasteful and intelligent as you could ask for.
In sum, this set can be recommended only to aficionados of Steber's artistry (such as myself). If you want a good account of the "Nuits d'été", look elsewhere. After listening to about a dozen sets, I would most gladly recommend the recording made by French soprano Régine Crespin or, as a close second, Victoria de los Angeles who is impressively accompanied by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Charles Munch.
If you're looking for recordings of Steber, I'd recommend her operatic performances, but there have also been issued Strauss and Mozart albums which I find very rewarding. Let's hope they will help this wonderful singer who is still underrated in the US and almost forgotten in Europe to get the admiration she deserves.
One last word on the edition: This set has been out of print for quite some time and it seems that it has become a kind of a collector's item, as copies are now sold at hair-raising prices on EBAY and elsewhere. So, if you're thinking about your record collection mainly from the point of view of capital investment, maybe this is your thing...
A Treasure.......2000-03-28
The sacred arias, while reflecting the performance practices of the 1950's, nevertheless show Steber as a master of this repertoire.
Regretably, there are few Steber recordings using modern techniques. The 78's and mono recordings of the 1940's are appearing again and I would urge SONY and BMG to search their vaults and reissue everything they have, such as recordings with Ormandy, Robert Shaw, and the Met Faust.
