Music From the Coffee Lands

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Suprise!.......2007-01-25

Having just gotten into collecting world music rather than just listening to it on the radio....I am more than pleased with my latest acquisition of Coffee Lands music. The music on this CD is totally mellow. Every song on it is a keeper. If you want something different, this is a CD to consider.

3 out of 5 stars How can you have this CD w/o an Ethiopian contribution.......2007-01-14

Am I missing something? This CD does not have any Ethiopian music? I'm a bit perplexed by that seeing as coffee originated in Ethiopia.

2 out of 5 stars Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf.......2006-06-15

If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.

I used to have this CD,but I took it to a used CD store.

Its few highlights are Susana Baca,Ernest Ranglin,Thomas Mapfumo,James 'Bla'Pahinui&Ayub Ogada. The rest are easy-listening Buena Vista Social Club.

When it comes to Putumayo's themed compilations,I reccomend "Gardens of Eden" (sadly,it's out of print),"Music from the Tea Lands"(EXCELLENT!),"Asian Lounge".I am looking forward to "Music from the Wine Lands"--considering I live in the Wine Country.Hopefully,"Music from the Wine Lands" won't be snooze-inducing like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Chill out with a cup of coffee or a Mojito.............2005-08-05

Good Putumayo CD. Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best world music compilataions I've heard.......2004-01-25

Amazing collection of songs - not one is a throwaway. If you're looking to break into "world music" the Putumayo collections are a great starting point.

Fortunately for the Putumayo label, the nations that grow coffee also produce some of the best music on the planet. Otherwise, we might have something as unattractive as Songs from the Linseed-Oil-Processing Countries instead of this savory disc. Marketing devices aside, there is undeniable romance to a cup of fine coffee, and compiler Jacob Edgar superbly captures that mild but heady exotica in songs from Central and South America, Africa, and Asia. The Dominican Republic's Titico y Los Caracoles del Amargue brew a spicy mug of bachata with popping guitar lines and conch-shell "trumpet" parts. Mexico's Correo Aero bring a lush harp lead and a definite high-altitude feel to the Venezuelan traditional song "Fiesta Lianera." Ex-3 Mustaphas 3 bass man and vocalist Sabah Habbas Mustapha joins forces with Java's Jugala All-Stars for a cosmopolitan romp blending Sudanese instruments (including the haunting suling flute) and Congolese bass and drum patterns. Though not well known for caffeinated drinks, Martinique enjoys fame for its Creole pop. Wielding his trademark banjo, Martinican Kali hitches a gentle reggae bounce to local sensibilities on "Monte la Rivie," a song about finding the source of the river of life. Nicely documented with liner notes that even contain coffee drink recipes, Music from the Coffee Lands II is good to the last cut. --Bob Tarte

5 out of 5 stars My absolute favorite Putumayo Cd!.......2002-10-24

I admit I am new to discovering world music. I got very interested in it this year, because I was so bored and uninspired by today's music. So, now I have discovered the Putumayo and Rough Guide series and I love them both! I own 9 Putumayo CDs, but actually have listened to 24. This one is my absolute favorite!! No, I don't even drink coffee! I bought this based on sampling some of the tracks on Amazon.com. This is overall a very mellow, relaxing Cd. Ceumar, from Brazil, sings, "Dindinha," the most beautiful bossa nova tune. Another unbelievably moving bossa nova tune is "Quem e Muito Querido a Mim," By Geraldo Azevedo. Gigi, the Ethiopian female singer is becoming a huge star, with her newest Cd. Listen to the tune, "Guramayle," and you will see why! Another track that moves me to pieces is "Nge Na Munu," by Denis Tshibayi of the Congo. He strays away from the popular dance genre of music, Congolese Soukous on this track, and its absolutely delightful! Some of the more upbeat numbers are by Kali of Martinique; and Emeline Michel of Haiti. Those tunes will definitely make you move your feet. Kali, A zouk popstar, is featured on five of the Putumayo cds and I absolutely love what he does. Emeline Michel, is known as "The Queen Of Creole Song." If you discover more of her music, like I have- you will know why!! She has such a beautiful voice and sings an inspiring tribute to mothers, on "Moso Manman." This Cd has music from the Caribbean, Africa, Latin America and Indonesia. I hope you'll pick it up! Its a real winner!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely one to keep.......2002-06-24

Amazingly well compiled songs..match the Vol I. I like this a little better given the diversity. But a great roadtrip or Sunday morning tune. Can't wait for Vol III!
