20th Century Masterpiece.......2007-07-12

This recording is a 'must' addition for anyone's collection of great 20th century music. It is conducted by the composer, Benjamin Britten, and is as moving as when the War Requiem was first heard more than 45 years ago. And the quality of the London recording captures the powerful and huge ensemble of soloists, musicians and choirs that came together for this historic recording. Listen and weep for the 'the pity of war.'

This set or the Auryn Quartet set?.......2004-06-06

I read, in a book on string quartets, the statement: "More than half of the best string quartets had been written when Schubert died in 1828". I agree, but would put the percentage at more like 75 or 80%. The author went on to include all of Schubert's, even those that he wrote as a teenager. I was surprised by this comment, but now, having now heard his complete string quartets, I have to agree. Even his early ones are superb!

To the recordings: I was just a bit disappointed. The sound seems a bit harsh in places, not as warm as sets I have by the Quartetto Italiano (Beethoven), Melos Quartet (Mozart) and Aoelian Q (Haydn). No doubt they are technically very correct, and show real liveliness - the violins just sound a bit scratchy in places.

The only other complete set seems to be the Auryn Quartet recording, highly recommended by the Penguin guide, but twice as expensive. Naxos offers 12 or the 15 quartets on 5 separate CDs. I'd liked to have heard the Auryn recording before I'd made the decision to purchase this one - who knows, I might have made the same decision anyway.

Buy it for the right reasons.......2002-10-04

I agree with the other review, but there is an alternative to this set, by the Auryn Quartet, and it is also excellent. So, buy this set for the right reasons, whatever those are, such as: the sound quality of this Chamber Ensemble (extremely warm)
or the overall feel of their playing (caring, respectful). Buy the set from the Auryn quartet if you care more about the sound quality of the recording (it is noticeably better) or if you happen to like a younger, slightly more aggressive approach.
Frankly I have both sets, and love both.

Great Music for a Good Price.......2002-05-02

I bought this set in Dec. '01 and it has since become a favorite in my collection. Schubert is a great composer and in my opinion, the quartets are where he really shines.

Sadly, it is hard to find recordings of all but the last four. In total, there are fourteen plus two fragments- one incomplete and one lost. They are all here and at such a good deal!

The first two discs (first five quartets and a fragment) really stand out. These were quartets Schubert composed as a student and they capture well the energy of youth and have a beautifully simple quality that always makes Schubert stand out. The middle discs track his early career with a more mature motif development revealing a taste of the boldness to come from his later quartets. Not as melodic as the first quartets in my opinion, but a treat nonetheless. Then ah! the last three discs. "Rosamunde," "Death and the maiden," Quartettstatz and C 703. Can you possibly go wrong? Don't answer that. You know it doesn't get better!!

Now we come to recording quality. Well, the Melos Quartet recorded these in the mid 70's. They've been digitally touched up and well done. Still, not convincing enough to sound like new. Treble and Mid is alright but the Bass is really lacking and overall, it still lacks the full sound of recordings from the Emerson and Tokyo quartets. Still, with touchup, these recordings sound more like late 80's- Not Bad!

This is a great deal for a great price. For better quality, I also picked up Emerson's recording of the late quartets, but you will be hard pressed to find a recording of the early and middle works...and what works they are!!!

Radu Lupu recorded batches of Mozart and Schubert violin sonatas with the great violinist Szymon Goldberg (regrettably unavailable at present, but watch for them). This seems to be his only other recording of violin sonatas with someone else. Kyung Wha Chung is a powerful virtuoso who can play all the great showpieces, but she scales down her approach to express the muted beauty of the Debussy. Of course, she gives a powerful, extroverted reading to the Franck Sonata, which demands such an approach. Lupu collaborates all the way in both expressive worlds. The additional Debussy and Ravel, from a 1962 LP, are tasty bonuses. --Leslie Gerber

This group of works of French Impressionism is enjoyable from begining to end and can be highly recommended. The sound quality given its vintage is excellent. I have competing versions of the Ravel and Debussy and this version more than holds its own. The Franck is one of those works any fan of western art music should not be without. I purchased this after reading about it in the NPR guide which also recommended it highly.

Tom Hanks won't have a regret on what CDs he should have brought to the island in the movie "Cast Away", only if he had this Chung & Lupu sonata!

Marvellous (but slightly mislabelled).......2000-09-27

This CD unites two sets of classic performances: The Franck and Debussy Violin Sonatas by Kyung Wha Chung and Radu Lupu, dating from 1977, and two 1962 recordings by the Melos Ensemble (Ravel's Introduction and Allegro and Debussy's Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp). At the time of thisreview,it is listed Kyung Wha Chung as a performer on the latter Debussy Sonata, which is not the case, though the fault probably lies with the way the disc is labelled and documented (you have to read the fine print to see exactly who is performing what). But all four of these are classic performances, with excellent sound (though analogue recordings), and there is no better buy in the catalog than this disc for chamber music lovers!

Captivating Tunes.......2006-10-31

Astounding harmonies, hypnotic, restful, great echo. I bought this as part of a boxed set and found myself listening to "Aquitane" to the exclusion of the other material. There is something comforting and familiar and strangely accessible. The fourth hymn, "O Primus Homo Coruit," has a particularly appealing melody and engages the mystical in a way comparable to gazing at an elaborate stained glass window. "Jube Domine, Puis Lecture: Primo Tempore" will remind some of the scene in Monty Python & the Holy Grail when the monks chant and strike themselves with their Bibles. I like the first five selections best. Often play as I drift off to sleep.

Good value for your money.......2001-02-22

This CD, containing a selection of 12th century French church choral music, is a good buy. The general style of the music is similar to that of the recently popular Gregorian chants, but with a greater variety of arrangements. The recording includes works for choir, solo voice and duets (all male), and solo organ.

The recording is clear and crisp and the program notes are informative. The Latin text of the music is translated in the notes, however the translation is in French.

Mozart:Energize Does Energize.......2007-04-06

The Tune Your Brain Series works! I don't know if it's because of the scientific data they use (whatever it may be), or because they use a particular combination of music, but playing this CD helps inspire energy in me.

I've used the Creativity and Focus CDs in classroom settings, and they work as well. Lovely classical music with the benefit of getting work done.

Exhilarating CD.......2000-07-13

I truly enjoy this CD every time I need a lift. It contains many of Mozart's finest works and 6 of the symphonies on this CD were conducted by Karl Bohm. That makes it very special because he was one of the best. My only regret is that this CD did not include the first movement of Symphony #40. It has the last movement but not the first. Nevertheless, this is one CD that you will keep coming back to if you are in the need for a shot in the arm.

It would be difficult to imagine a finer account of this extraordinary work than that of the Melos Quartet and their distinguished guest. The flow of the music is magnificently sustained, its color and inner life marvelously felt. There is a spontaneity to the playing that perfectly complements the profound whimsicality of Schubert's journeys to remote tonal regions, along with a sensitivity ideally suited to the meditative quality of the composer's lyricism. Highly Recommend.......2007-02-08

I love this piece. Although I haven't heard many recordings of it, I can guarantee that this must be among the best. I fell in love with it as soon as I heard it. The playing is wonderful. The group is very tight and dramatic in all the right spots. I would highly recommend this cd. It is a little pricey, so it may be worth looking around for other copies, but if you don't mind paying the $24.00 I assure you that you won't be disappointed.

I am a cellist and had to play this for a summer camp. I ended up with four different quartets versions of this piece. We all know how differently the same piece can sound right? This version by the Melos quartett was my favorite. Their interpretation of Schubert's music was beautiful. The nuances they created and their phrasing enhanced what was written by Schubert. You will not be disappointed with this CD.

Schubert from Melos, Rostropovich, Shines Brightly.......2000-03-06

The edition of this recording in my possession is from the European set "Schubert Meisterwerke" which was availbale for a short time in the US. This particular recording is among the most soulful of the Schubert C Major Quintet. Most notable is probably the second movement, Adagio, with potent first violin and first 'cello lines that sing over the mezza voce accompaniment. Rostropovich is rather well known for taking this movement slower than comfortable for many players, but I think this adds a great deal to the recording as the movement is beautiful but restless at points. The Melos will not let you merely settle passively into this movement, but will pull and push you along with it. The Scherzo is an amazing contrast in that it is practically all push -- pushing ahead that is -- until the more lyrical trio. This work is difficult to navigate, with numerous voice changes, parallels and tempi that refuse to quite settle, but it is difficult to find a better recording than this.

Terrific value, both in playing time (CD 2 alone plays for more than 81 minutes) and artistic merit. Karajan's 1964 La Mer has long been recognized as one of the classics of the gramophone, and Abbado's acutely atmospheric account of the Nocturnes with the Boston Symphony Orchestra is scarcely less distinguished. We stay in that city for both the gorgeous Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune (a voluptuously ecstatic performance from 1971 under the gifted young baton of Michael Tilson Thomas) and a ravishing Syrinx from the BSO's eloquent principal flute, Doriot Anthony Dwyer. And the pleasures don't end there: there's a live Estampes from the peerless Sviatoslav Richter, while the Melos Quartet of Stuttgart's version of the String Quartet can hold its own against any rival--as does a sublime, indeed inspirational rendering of the Cello Sonata from Mstislav Rostropovich with composer Benjamin Britten at the piano. By the way, it's a sobering thought to remember that the legendary Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's crystalline, immaculately turned interpretation of the First Book of Preludes originally occupied one full-price CD on its own. In other words, if DG's selection appeals (and it certainly should), don't hesitate for a moment. --Andrew Achenbach

The best, if not the most, Debussy that money can buy........2004-03-29

Clocking in at more than two-and-a-half hours of music by Debussy, this is one of the best collections of his music that money can buy. It includes definitive performances of his most popular symphonic, chamber, and solo piano works. Michelangeli, for instance, is known for, above all, his interpretations of Debussy. Gramophone magazine says of these recordings "Michelangeli subjects each note to the last refinements of shading and places it with hairsbreadth precision." Throughout their mature careers, Rostropovich and Britten were frequent collaborators in the repertory for cello and piano, including this very work. (Britten dedicated his solo cello suites to Rostropovich.) The Melos' recording of Debussy's String Quartet is among the best available, and better than most. Nearly forty years after it's initial release, von Karajan's 1965 recording of La Mer with the Berlin Phil has stood the test of time, repeatedly deleted and then added back to the DG catalogue. Though only in his mid-20s when he made this Debussy Afternoon of a Faun with the BSO, M.T.T. delivers a ravashing and colorful account. And so on. An excellent addition to the collection of either a classical music beginner or one with more refined aural tastes.

A fine collection.......2003-07-27

This collection offers a very representative mixture of Debussy's works from orchestral, solo piano and chamber genres. However, I would offer two caveats. First, as to the La Mer, the Karajan performance is distinguished by the sensuous sheen he imparts to the music, but for a tarter, more idiomatically French approach, I would suggest listening to the Munch-Boston or Casadesus recordings as well. Secondly, as to the Michelangeli performance of the Book One Preludes, although impeccably played, this is a noticably deliberate and cold sounding rendition. For more warmth, flow and color, look elsewhere. Nevertheless, this set is an excellent introduction to Debussy.

Essential Debussy.......2000-12-29

This is a wonderful Debussy compilation. The recordings total nearly 3 hours and give an excellent representation of Debussy's works. This is a great CD for people who do not have Debussy in their CD collection. Included in the CD are Debussy's "La Mer," "Préludes," and the masterpiece "Prélude á l'Aprés-midi d'un Faune." The CDs are perfect for putting on while taking a nap, reading, etc...

The huge success of Anonymous 4--four women who sing nothing but chant and polyphony from the Middle Ages--is one of the remarkable musical phenomena of the '90s. Humans relate to the elemental forces of music the same today as they did last year or last millenium. A special mass for Mary.......2005-10-30

'a Lammas Ladymass' performed by Anonymous 4 is a special mass celebrating the ascencion of the Virgin Mary, typically celebrated, especially in medieval England, in early August.

This recording has all the usual sections of the Mass such as the Kyria, the Gloria, the Sanctus, and the Agnus dei, plus eighteen other parts I am less familiar with.

I am a very big fan of this group and I can listen to this for hours on end, and often do, but I suspect this particular recording is best bought if you are especially fond of the medieval mass, as it is just a bit less interesting than their works on secular motets and carols.

Nonetheless, this is a great recording, up to all the standards I hear in all their other recordings.

English Ladymass at its best.......2005-10-14

The music on this disc comes from the tradition of special masses done in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a very popular figure in medieval Europe - in some languages, more than half the music that survives from this period was written dedicated to her. The Ladymass was often performed weekly, and in larger communities and cathedrals, daily, in the Lady Chapels.

The Anonymous 4 have arranged this disc around a mass sequence, using a Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus dei. They have also incorporated other pieces - motets, an Alleluia setting, and other pieces such as the conductus (several voices declaiming the same text together), are incorporated to fill out the programme. These would not have been performed in this kind of sequence and number in a proper worship service, but most would have been appropriate in worship settings during a Ladymass.

For this disc, these pieces of polyphony and chant come from the English tradition. Thus, many things that on the continent might have been in polyphonic setting, the Anonymous 4 have simplified and set in conductus style, which was often the case in English churches.

The music here is beautiful, in full flower of the spirit of the composition, the subject, and the power of the Anonymous 4 to bring such music to life.

This text accompaniment to this disc is very full, so much so that the booklet is not contained within the jewel case, but rather within a slipcover in which both the CD/jewel case and the booklet reside. The liner notes include a description of the work, a brief piece about the quartet, and the lyrics of the songs both in original language and in translation - all repeated in English, German, and French sections. The cover art comes from 'Coronation of the Virgin' from a Book of Hours, from France and Belgium, circa 1480. There are other details from this book and from other manuscripts found in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, throughout this booklet.

Contrary to the implication of their name, the Anonymous 4 are not anonymous. This is a vocal quartet made up of Ruth Cunningham, Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, and Johanna Rose at the time of this recording (Ruth Cunningham will later go on to a solo career early, and another member will join - Jacqueline Horner). They came together as a formal group in 1986, and have been ensemble-in-residence at St. Michael's Church in New York City, giving concert series in New York as well as throughout North America. They have been featured a number of times on national media in North America as well as Germany. They then went on to yet more success, eventually performing more that 1000 concerts worldwide.

Their specialty is working with chant, monophonic and polyphonic music, and working with medieval texts. According to one source, 'The group takes its name from an anonymous music theorist of the late 13th century, Anonymous IV, who is the principal source on the two famous composers of the Notre Dame school, Léonin and Pérotin.'

The group ended a touring career of nearly two decades in 2004.

Medieval chants in honour of Our Lady.......2001-04-07

This compilation of english chants from the 13th and 14th centuries in honour of Our Lady is really sublime, depicting an hipotethical Mass similar to those that could be sung in praise of God's Mother, in the afore-mentioned period.

Anonymous 4 sing beautifully, and where the male medieval chant is determined, decided, firm and strong in the affirmation of religious faith, the female chant, like this one I am reviewing now, is subtle, kind, sweet and tender, almost angelical, but without lose any efectiveness in the expression of that same religious faith.

It is an enormous pleasure to listen such a record, an authentic rest to the soul, and I obviously must recommend it.

Finally, a last word to eulogize the visual presentation of the record made by Harmonia Mundi: the booklet, as usual on that label, is wonderfully illustrated.

Sounds Good but all in all it lacks points of interest.......2000-05-08

This CD is pretty good, I don't understand a single word of the language it is being sung in and I still like the sound of it quite a bit. But it just starts to wear on me after awhile there's nothing all that stirring or powerful at any point in it. The Voices of Light album that was done for the Passion of Joan of Arc video seems to have a lot more power and emotion in it. Still I have to admire any group that can awaken such a renewed look at such old music and can truly make people realize how good this music was. The album definitely is excellent at times it just seems to get old quickly.

Simply beautiful.......1999-04-19

I don't understand a word of the lyrics but then music is so universal and this is no exception. I just love listening to it especially in the evening after a hard day's work and need to unwind. Very relaxing and with a good sound system puts you in another dimension.
