Call it the original Buena Vista Social Club. Back in 1979 a crew of Cuba's best musicians got together in Egrem Studios in Havana and recorded epic sessions that were later issued on Egrem's Areito label. Brought together by African musical impresario Raoul Diomandé, and under the direction of trombonist Juan Pablo Torres, these 30 "stars" poured their hearts into a series of long, energetic tracks (running 7 to 15 minutes apiece) that burn up the aluminum on the two CDs they are now housed on. Many names leap out of the roster: Paquito D'Rivera, Rubén González, Israel Perez, Pio Leyva, and Arturo Sandoval just for a start. They are small parts in a group that spanned three generations from across the island, and they fused the violin-based tipicas with the tres and horns of the jazzier conjuntos to create a sound that shook the city and spread out to the world. Torres's inventive arrangements and his willingness to allow for a lot of improvisation within that framework mark this as an exciting adventure. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars The masters at play.......2006-10-13

If you like authenticity, spontaneity, and Cuban music, you'll love this 2-CD all-star set. Noting the popularity of New York-based salsa musicians in the Seventies, Paris-based Ivory Coast producer Raoul Diomande, a great admirer of Afro-Cuban music, went to the source -- La Habana -- and cut these sides in 1979. Juan Pablo Torres recruited and arranged the charts for the trumpeters Felix Chappotin, Arturo Sandoval, Guajiro Mirabal and Jorge Varona. Additionally, Paquito D'Rivera (Irakere) is on alto sax, while pianists Ruben Gonzalez and Jesus Rubalcaba handle the 88 keys. The brilliant rhythm section includes percussionists Amadito Valdes, Tata Guines, Ricardo Leon, and electric bassist Fabian Garcia. Torres also wanted to represent the gentler influence of the charanga, and brought in violinists including Enrique Jorrin, credited with inventing the cha cha cha, Angel Barbazon and Miguel "Brindis" Barbon, plus flutist Richard Egues. Chappotin has great presence and Torres contributes warm-toned, fluent trombone spots. Gonzalez, who played with the Buena Vista Social Club, displays more brilliance here; in '79 he was younger and gigging on a more consistent basis. The lead vocalists, include the great Miguelito, Tito Gomez from Orquesta Riverside improvise with the flexibility of horn players. The late Pio Leyva also lends his baritone voice to the mix. Even though this recording came in late 1979, and was (incredibly) performed in a week, its improvisations are just mind-boggling. You will be witnessing witchcraft artistry at an incredible level. The cd includes a very imformative booklet and lyrics (with translation). The lyrics add so much to the music... especially for you non-Spanish speakers. Essential and very Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Best, The Only Latin CD that matters!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-02-02

This CD is my favorite CD of any kind of music no contest. I have listened to this CD everyday for the past year. I have bought many Latin CD's only to be disappointed with the selection of songs. Most of what people consider Latin music today is trash, watered down music for American consumption, people with fake gold chains (and fake hair on their chest), trying to cash in on the works of the real masters of (son)music. The musicians on these two CD's are GOD's with their instruments, it is passionate, and spiritual the feeling you get from listening to these CD's. If you could only afford one cd your entire life this should be it. I only hope the musicians on this album (CD)get the monetary reward and acclaim they deserve. I can not stop listening to this CD,"Mi Amanecer Campesino" is the perfect Latin song hands down, it is just perfect, If anyone out there has heard a better latin song please let me know. BUY this cd.

4 out of 5 stars State of Cuban music 1979.......2002-03-21

This was the state of Cuban music in 1979, the product of jam sessions convened by trombonist/producer/arranger Juan Pablo Torres at the famed EGREM studio. "Estrellas de Areito" means "Stars of Areito" in English, referring to the fact that the albums were originally released on Areito, a Cuban government label. The performances are a little repititious, but this is more than compensated by the spirited vocals and wonderful solos by Ruben Gonzalez, Arturo Sandoval, Nino Rivera, Paquito D'Rivera and other worthy souls, some of whom would later defect to the USA.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal.......2002-02-17

Once you hear this music, you will understand why many modern music historians will tell 'there's "el son", then there's everything else.'

It's unfortunate that most people think of Salsa as 'the' Cuban music. Salsa it's just a simplified, pop version of the real deal, 'el son.'

Forget Salsa, Merengue, or any other type of Latin music you may have heard.

The son is the real deal. The rhythms of Africa, the moodiness of Spain, it's own amazing set of instruments (the 'tres' stands out), the jazz of the French brass, the soulful of the Blues (Blues originates in W. Africa), and the funk of the Montuno.

Once you have been captivated by 'el son', you will never listen to music quite the same way again.

This CD contains some of the most amazing, mesmerizing descargas (jams) you will ever hear. There's no language barrier here. This music goes places, and comes back.

Every song is a celebration of life, and of the 'son'. The musicians are very aware of the music they are interpreting.
You can hear them encouraging and admiring each other as each voice/instrument takes its turn under the spotlight and the rest of the musicians take their turn in support.

The chorus in Prepara los Cueros is a show of it's own, reminiscent of the chorus in a Greek play as it introduces the players.

This CD is a treasure.
