Born in County Clare, Sharon Shannon is a charismatic musician who is equally at home on button accordion or fiddle. This set commences with Galicia's revered gaita (bagpipe) virtuoso, Carlos Núñez, leading a mazurka-like tune that morphs into what sounds like a syncopated Spanish-Irish jig. There are Francophone references throughout the album; "Galway Girl" (sung by Steve Earle) and "Say You Love Me" are Cajun-flavored barroom stomps, while "The Pernod Waltz" would be a perfect fit in Quebec. The vocal soloists--Earle, John Prine, Liam O'Maonlai, John Hoban, Mary Staunton, Dessie O'Halloran, and Jackson Browne, are either idiomatic or else so far beyond that it ceases to matter. Other notable participants include the Woodchoppers (Shannon's touring band), the Hothouse Flowers, and Donal Lunny (the Quincy Jones of Ireland.) Even amid so much talent and variety, "Fire in the Bellies," which features the robust fiddling of Liz and Yvonne Kane, demands repeated hearings. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars If you like either the vocalists or Irish fiddle and squeezebox you're going to like this.......2007-07-05

And you might just find that you like both together quite well. Sharon Shannon has assembled an all-star cast of musicians and singers for this CD and all of it bears repeating. What the Chieftains do in "Further Along The Old Plank Road" Sharon continues with her own flair.

My favorite of this collection is Steve Earle singing "Galway Girls." His 'peat smoke' voice really lends itself to the Irish ballads.

Mark Knopfler, John Prine, Jackson Browne and many other big-name vocalists join Shannon for these sessions. Among them is Dessie O'Halloran, who I thought from the name was a woman. What a wonderful surprise.

The best thing about this CD is it takes a lot of people I love to listen to and combines them with fabulous musicianship and the sum of the whole is far greater than its parts. This is an excellent collaboration and I will be looking for "Libertango" next.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful listening experience and so diverse!!.......2005-09-20

This CD is an excellent representation of the kind of artist Sharon Shannon has become. As she has evolved as an accordionist she has added so much to her repertoire beyond the traditional Celtic music. At first I found this evolution a bit disconcerting but as a loyal fan I decided to trust the directon Shannon took, which is collaborating with artists of many different styles. She has continued this evolution with her most recent CD (Libertango) which is also quite good.

The CD is worth owning if only for the wonderful piece sung by Dessie O'Halloran, "Say You Love Me", a most endearing love song. I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. O'Halloran in person with the Sharon Shannon band, a memorable performance to say the least.

There are many enjoyable tracks on this CD, including some traditional works, and the collaborations with other artists are great.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this!.......2001-12-19

I bought this on a recommendation and I loved it from the first play. Steve Earle, John Prine, Jackson Browne and Irish music. The version of Banks of the Old Ponchartrain is so wonderful. Take a gamble, go with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2001-11-10

This is an excellent CD with contributions from many fine musicians and vocalists. I especially enjoy the Steve Earle song
and the variety of sounds included on the recording. This CD is "good fun" and my copy has been played many times. If you like upbeat and entertaining music with a Celtic flair you should check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Yes Wow Buy Now.......2001-08-17

This is Irish instrumental music on steroids. Wonderful Squeeze Box and fiddles, interesting bass lines and sparkling dexterity on the whistles.

Sharon Shannon seems to know just where to push traditional music and how much to push it. The result is always exciting and yet respectful. She is also great to see in concert, so go if you get the chance.

County Clare-born accordionist/multi-instrumentalist/bandleader is long overdue for a career retrospective and this two-CD set overflows with high points. Although an acknowledged master of Irish traditional styles, this least complacent and most generous of artists never ceases experimenting. The first disc contains instrumentals cherry-picked from six albums. "Cavan Potholes" depicts omni-present Irish road conditions and "The Mighty Sparrow", taped during the "A Woman's Heart" tour, is a jig augmented by a Caribbean beat and raucously apt sax solo. Disc two is given over to vocals, many of which are performed by stars from other genres. Jackson Browne's "A Man Of Constant Sorrow" is given a Hibernian Grand Ol' Opry treatment compete with lovely back-up singing from Mary Staunton. Damien Dempsey, a sensitive roughneck of a Dublin singer-composer, gives the Lennon/McCartney chestnut "Norwegian Wood" a new lease on life and also turns up in "Courtin' In The Kitchen", a profane little comedy led by the inimitable Dessie O'Halloran. But the late Kirstie MacColl's treatment of Astor Piazzolla's "Libertango" is magic of a more wistful, shadowy kind, making us miss her all the more. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars True Irish Pub Music.......2006-11-29

I bought this CD in Galway Ireland before it was released in the states and have listened to it ever since. If you have a love of the music found in the pubs of Ireland, you will have a deep appreciation for this recording. Her mix of instruments produces a lively blend of sounds and harmony - a jazzy intertwining of themes and textures.

The baby-boomers who have led the Irish folk-music revival have long had an aversion to drum & bass, viewing these dance-band implements as a betrayal of tradition and a sellout to commercialism. As a result their records have often been dazzling in the higher ranges but undernourished on the bottom, where only the bodhran and bouzouki hold sway. Sharon Shannon has no such compunctions, and she features drum & bass on eight of the dozen numbers on her second solo album, Out the Gap.

The accordionist, who has toured as part of the Waterboys, has reinforced the rhythmic bottom of traditional Celtic music and given it a balance it has long needed. When she plays the bouncy melody to the old reel, "The Dunmore Lasses," for example, Paul Blake's drum kit and Trevor Hutchinson's electric double bass make the bounce harder and higher. Thus it's no surprise when Shannon's accordion solo gives way to Richie Buckley's sax solo. The all-instrumental album draws its material from traditional Irish, French-Canadian, Finnish, and American sources as well as from modern fiddlers in Scotland, Chicago, and County Mayo. Shannon is a solid squeezebox player, but it's not her virtuosity so much as her arrangement ideas which make this album sound so fresh. --Geoffrey Himes

3 out of 5 stars Well, yes, but..........2003-03-19

Sprightly, cheerful, yet ultimately lightweight and unchallenging Celtic-fusion instrumentals, basically trad-based, but with flourishes of reggae, pop and classical styles woven into the sound. Shannon is a superior musician, with dazzling technique on both button and bow, but this is music that was made to sit in the background, and doesn't really move me. No onerous synths or outlandishly "pop" arrangements, and a welcome softening of the standard severity of the trad style, but still a bit cotton-candy-ish and bland.

4 out of 5 stars Wait till you hear Diamond Mountain Sessions!.......2000-11-03

This was a good CD, we picked it up in a little shop in Killarney Ireland where she was due to play the day after we left. We also bought her new album called "Diamond Mountain Sessions" which is the best new album I've bought in years! I'm not sure if it's available in the states yet, but it is well worth the wait. Appearances from Steve Earl, Jackson Browne, etc...

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Album.......2000-03-17

I had never heard of Sharon Shannon until a friend of mine insisted I listen to Out The Gap. I ran out and bought my own copy the next day. This is a stunning album. Every track is great. It gets richer every time I play it, and I've played it maybe 500 times. I'm sure most people have never heard of Sharon. I don't know whether to tell the world or keep her our little secret. When your tastes grow up and you get tired of the sludge that passes for "music" these days, come home to Sharon Shannon. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars I guess I get to be the bad guy.......2000-02-25

If the current Celtic music fashion has only one lasting effect, I hope it's to renew the reputation of the accordion, an instrument much maligned for its association with snoozer music from a less hip generation. Sharon Shannon serves up a steaming hot dish of not-your-daddy's-accordion music, and if it doesn't make you want to get up and dance, we might as well lay you six by six in the ground right now.

5 out of 5 stars Lively and fun........1999-03-18

I got this cd after seeing Sharon Shannon live. She and her band are terrific musicians, and this album shows them off wonderfully. Many of the tunes are upbeat ones that are lively and fun. I always have to play the cd through at least twice because I'm never ready for it to end.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a couple listens but no more.......2006-05-29

With an ensemble like this one, it could really go either way: a more traditional approach like Frankie Gavin's 1920s-reminiscent fiddle albums or a slap in the face of good taste like Mike McGoldrick's "Fused".

Thankfully, Mike and Shannon have left the exotic instruments and programmed beats off this record, but this group effort still lacks something.

The first couple listens, I was pretty impressed by the tight sound that the three solo musicians achieved, but where other albums from Slide, Danu and Trian grew on me over time, this one just annoyed me.

I think it's mostly due to Jim Murray's backing, which basically sounds the same on every track. His rythm on jigs is especially irritating at times (think former Lunasa member Donogh Hennessy on happy juice). Although this is clearly meant to be an ensemble recording, they play together ALL the time on ALL the tracks. As a result, they tracks feel like they run together.

That being said, the musicianship and tune selection is excellent and the album definitely doesn't lack excitement so it's still enjoyable to listen to, provided you don't get sick of it as I did.

I'd recommend Gavin's solo fiddle CDs and Mike McGoldrick and John McSherry's "At First Light" as alternatives to this. As for Sharon Shannon, well, that's another review.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful Melodies, Expertly played.......2005-10-23

This is a very nice CD filled with wonderful tunes set in very interesting arrangements. The playing emphasizes the melodies and ensemble work. The melodies are wonderful and tend to have a positive, upbeat, or even joyous, emotional tone to them. The ensemble work tends to focus on how the sounds of the instruments combine to create a musical setting (none of the tunes provide a forum for showcasing virtuosity--of course, these folks have the credentials and there's no need to prove themselves to anyone). The arrangements are quite contemporary. You'll hear unexpected (and very tasteful) chording and interesting rhythms that occasionally give the tune a very jazz-like feel. If you like Lunasa, you'll probably like the CD. Is this "Lawrence Welk meets Irish music"? It certainly is not. When the arrangements are as interesting and musically complex as these are, the comparison just doesn't fit. Is this CD for everyone? Of course not, no CD can fit everyone's musical tastes. If you are a strict traditionalist who's still not sure that guitars belong in Irish music, that's fine but you probably won't like this CD. Similarly, if you absolutely need lightening fast jigs and reels fueled by pounding bodhrans and hard-driving, rock-like chording, then this CD is not for you. If you like beautiful Irish melodies played by people who are secure enough to stand back and let the music speak for itself and who are also talented enough to create interesting contemporary arrangements, then you'll like this CD.

    2 out of 5 stars Something's missing.......2005-06-03

I feel bad about giving this a bad review. So a little history: I've been waiting to hear this CD ever since I heard of its existence. I've been a huge fan of Sharon Shannon for years and some of her CDs are among my favorites (although her tendency to bring on all sorts of singers and songwriters lately lost my interest--still haven't mustered the nerve to listen to Libertango). Frankie Gavin is one of Ireland's top fiddlers and I was eager to hear him in a modern setting. What fan of Irish traditional music doesn't like DeDanann? And I just heard Alec Finn/Frankie Gavin from 25 or so years ago and it knocks my sox off. Michael McGoldrick on flute? I really like "At First Light" with him and John McSherry. He was in Lunasa. And he's great on Kate Rusby's DVD, "Live From Leeds". Guitarist Jim Murray is new to me, but his playing produces some of the few highlights on this CD. So what's wrong here? I've listened to this CD about four times now, trying to figure this out. Maybe it's the "Tunes" themselves. Nothing grabs me. I just listened to "Coolfin" by Donal Lunny again today (the band included Sharon Shannon) and nearly every tune is fresh, beautifully arranged, and a joy to hear. However, most of the tunes on "Tunes" appear to be originals and I'm not hooked. Maybe it's the arrangements. Nobody wants to hog the limelight, so everybody plays along together without much innovation. I hate to say it but this sounds something like Lunasa/Bothy Band/De Danaan run through Lawrence Welk. And if you've never seen Lawrence Welk, imagine a band where everybody is smiling, having good clean fun, and playing it way too safe to be interesting. Hopefully, I'll put this CD on one more time in a few weeks and suddenly it will make sense and I'll change my review. But until then I have to register my disappointment.

The gloriously unpredictable Irish accordion virtuoso, fiddler and bandleader returns with another remarkably varied set. She is accompanied by a consort of tried-and-true homies, such as her talented sister Mary, plus prominent guest stars. The tunes range from rhythmically robust yet minutely-crafted trad-arr extravaganzas to a neo-tango (with vocals by Kirsty McColl, no less) that made its way onto the album via Grace Jones and the late Argentinean composer/bandoneon master Astor Piazzolla. There is also a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Hogs And Heifers, a notorious NYC bar catering to bikers, frat boys and exhibitionists. However, Sinéad O'Connor's simple, ardent treatment of the The Seven Rejoices Of Mary raises the tone, as does All The Ways You Wander, featuring the girlish, bell-like soprano of Pauline Scanlon. An Phailistin describes the tragedy of the Palestinian people. Sung in Egyptian and Irish by Róisín Elsafty and her immigrant family, it is a genuine heartbreaker. --Christina Roden

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Nearly as Good as Diamond Mountain Sessions.......2004-11-06

The only reason I didn't give this CD the full 5 stars is because it has a weak track, whereas Diamond Mountain Sessions (the other Shannon CD I have) didn't, in my opinion. If you liked D M, then you'll definitely like this. It's not exactly more of the same, because it's largely Irish, compared to D M's more international feel, incorporating American folk influences, but you will be easily absorbed into the jaunty reels, and the heartfelt airs, courtesy of Pauline Scanlon and Sinéad O'Connor.

Hogs and Heifers is a delightfully dainty fiddle piece, which I'm still trying to learn to play by ear. An Phailistín is very enjoyable and has an overwhelming "home made" feel to it. This isn't because the recording standards are bad(!). I think it's because the chorus, which the whole family joins in with, has a sense of unity. That may not make sense until you hear for yourself!

The Seven Rejoices of Mary is a very interesting piece, which Sinéad learned from some monks. At first, I found it quite boring and uninspiring, but like several of the other tracks on this CD, the more I listen to it, the more I appreciate it.

The only track that I'm not keen on is the title track, Libertango. The track lacks, I think, the essence of Shannon's other music. It's not as "catchy" and doesn't really draw you into it. At first, I really wasn't that keen on the last track, What you Make it, either - it's basically a re-hash of the The Whitestrand Sling, with an overwhelming rap element. But as I've continued to listen to it, it's grown on me somewhat.

This CD has some beautiful melodies, notably Anachie Gordon, which is very skillfully sung. Its more upbeat tracks are what we have come to expect of Shannon - uplifting, original and above all, they entice you to reach for the repeat button!

I would absolutely recommend this to anyone, but particularly those who have another of Sharon's CDs. It's not quite as accessible at first as D M Sessions and you may well find it a slight let-down at first, but the CD will definitely grow on you. Put it this way - I now love it just as much as D M!

One of the fortunate discoveries of a recent trip to Ireland was the opportunity to hear Sharon Shanon's "Each Little Thing" in a pub in Dingle.

This disk features the finest musicians in Ireland, including veteran Donal Lunney, who also produces the disk.

Each song is entirely different from the last, taking the listener on a musical journey. After almost two years this disk still bears repeated listening. If you are going to buy only one Irish music disk, this is the one!
