Who can fault an artist who so clearly embraces a one-planet, one-people worldview? Someone who recruits guest instrumentalists from every hemisphere to underscore his fondness for multiculturalism and convey his wish for global harmony? You can't help but admire Yanni, the Greek keyboardist/composer, even while acknowledging such nobility does not always translate into deeply satisfying music. On this, the audio-only component of his third made-for-television concert production (filmed in 2005 in Las Vegas), Yanni continues in his adopted role of True Egalitarian, playing a few bars to open a piece, then fading into the background to let other musicians (on violin, trumpet, sax, didgeridoo, hammer dulcimer, even keyboards) command the music's flow. A lovely gesture, but one that often results in extended soloing that sidetracks, even derails, the focus of the music. (Consider "Playtime," where Ming Freeman plays the jazzy piano solo, and the disc's previously unreleased track, "The Storm," pairing violinists Samvel Yervinyan and Sayaka Katsuki in a showy duet that is reminiscent of something from Bond.) Thus while the musicianship is first-rate, the production is superb, and some tracks are terrific (too bad "Standing in Motion" fades out so quickly), this disc is more about the jamming and less about staying on compositional task. Likely this project will be better appreciated in its DVD version, where the staging and artist interaction is on display. Meanwhile, some longtime fans may be left yearning for a day when Yanni will step up to his keyboards, drop the hammer, and let his own muse rock. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Sounds A Bit Like M E H D I.......2007-07-06

Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

Rhodesian-born, Greek-raised, London-schooled, Juilliard-scholarshipped, Maria Callas Prize Winner Mario Frangoulis is a pop singer with operatic training. The voice is a high baritone/low tenor. It's very appealing, and decidedly non-operatic sounding--Bocelli, for example, is a true opera singer compared to Frangoulis. His first CD, Sometimes I Dream, was a smash hit. This one is certain to be as well. There's little here to please the classical music lover--an arrangement, with love-song lyrics, of Verdi's "Va,pensiero" chorus from Nabucco is as close to opera as he comes. But what he has to offer is a type of introspection which he puts across with gentle sincerity, and he is as adept singing in English as he is in Italian, Spanish and Greek. Most of the selections here are slow and pensive, but a spirited duet with Spanish singer Aleyandro Fernandez and "Cu' mme," a duet with the singer Melody, with an infectious beat, stand out from the rest. Years ago, this was the type of album couples slow-danced and made out to--there's no reason why the tradition shouldn't continue. If your tastes run to Josh Groban and Russell Watson, which is to say, pop singers with classical training and amazing suaveness, then you'll find Frangoulis irresistible. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Following my heart to hear more of Mario.......2007-02-15

I probably shouldn't begin this review now as I am strapped for time to do it justice. But I wanted to share my admiration for Mr. Frangoulis now and I will edit later to share more about specific cuts on this CD.

It may be too telling to admit that I purchased this CD out of pure curiosity from the picture of Mario on the cover, without ever previewing any of his music first. But I wasn't disappointed with the content.

From the first listen, Mario's voice bathed me in desire, then wrapped me in silk and cashmere and fed me Godivas. Maybe it was due in part to the lustful romanticism that emanates from this CD, but it put me in a very relaxed and loving mood.

In every cut, Frangoulis' voice and the music was kissed by the gods making it a lovely experience to treasure.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-01-10

Mario was touted as the tenor who would overtake Josh Grogan and Andrea Bocelli. I don't think so. Nice voice and good background music but nothing exciting.

Breath taking! I can't stop listening! I am enchanted with all the songs and the singer's voice.

Mario Frangoulis has a voice that is warm and powerful, and brings opera into the 21st century. But when I saw the DVD of his "Sometimes I Dream", I saw real passion and dedication to music. Sony needs to PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE this great talent. I hope to hear and see much more wonderful work from Mario! How about a Christmas CD? Lynn

I highly recommend you listen to the songs "Follow Your Heart" and "Dance" and you can experience what I'm talking about.

4 out of 5 stars The original "Antichrist Superstar"...........2007-06-19

Before The Omen, and before Vangelis departed upon a solo career yielding electronic music for various films, there was this interesting "rock opera" conceptual production based upon the apocalyptic Judeo-Christian myth's book of Revelation, and seems to be a rather darker answer to 'Jesus Christ Superstar' so prominent at the time.

Essentially considered "progressive rock", it does contain some rather pleasing pieces setting a mood for celebration and 'sinful' vice, as well as somber orchestrations incorperating an eclectic combination of classical, rock, and even tribal mixes of instrumentation, combined with haunting narrations ranging from both the 'angelic' to the 'demonic' in countenance.

Track List:

* Disc one: 1. "System" 2. "Babylon" 3. "Loud, Loud, Loud" 4. "The Four Horsemen" 5. "The Lamb" 6. "The Seventh Seal" 7. "Aegian Sea" 8. "Seven Bowls" 9. "The Wakening Beast" 10. "Lament" 11. "The Marching Beast" 12. "The Battle Of The Locusts" 13. "Do It" 14. "Tribulation" 15. "The Beast" 16. "Ofis".

Nefarious chanting introduces the opus in 'System', preparing the mood for some morbid storyline; Appropriately, "Babylon" casts the impression of a carnal city in the midst of a celebration of the flesh in joyful rapport; "Loud, Loud, Loud" seems to admonish the humanimal towards the natural acceptance of the self, and a breaking forth of perfidious contraints from white light enslavers; 'Aegian Sea' is an instrumental in Ur sound orchestration, wherein one may visualize the vast misty shores of a glistening crest upon the ancient waters; "The Battle Of The Locusts" and "Do It" are violent guitar solos illustrating warfare; "The Beast" is rhythmically heavy with a memorable chorus, which may have your hoof tapping; The brief though amusing "Ofis" contains a humorous "shilgne" reverse speech inunciation amidst the throes of apparent 'possession'; The other intervening songs seem to link these together as segueways, preserving a smooth flow.

* Disc two: 1. "Seven Trumpets" 2. "Altamont" 3. "The Wedding of the Lamb" 4. "The Capture of the Beast" 5. "" 6. "Hic and Nunc" 7. "All the Seats Were Occupied" 8. "Break".

"Seven Trumpets" opens in carnival barker style, as a british voice welcomes the listener back to the show, as the curtain opens to... "Altamont" alludes to that infamous concert by The Rolling Stones in Northern California in which "the hunter became the hunted" {pun intended}; "Hic and Nunc" includes a choir singing "Here and Now", jaunty piano, some handclapping, and voice complimentations; "Infinity" is primarily comprised of a rather orgasmic woman in the throes of devilish ecstasy, again alluding to 'possession' - in this case, perhaps the "demon of lust", and/or Lilith; "All The Seats Were Occupied" spans near twenty minutes, incorperating many different effects therein, including bits and pieces from previous songs in the background, the return of the ringmaster, several other voices, chants, monks, to multiple shifts in harmony, and a cavalcade of instruments including scitar and sistrum; The opus concludes with "Break", a melancholy ballad utilizing piano and guitar in concert, creating a pleasant interchange.

'666' integrates the arcane with the modern, one complimenting the other in kind. Ironically, this album just may be the zietgeist which launched similar concept albums into the mass consciousness, both musically and thematically, inspiring subsequent diabolical expressions in a myriad of genres.

"DO IT."

5 out of 5 stars Sahlep? Sahlep? What the heck did Sahlep have to do with it........2007-05-17

Don't know what being "recorded under the influence of Sahlep" had to do with this but about 34 years ago I came home one night in high school under an influence myself and put the headphones on so as not to disturb the folks. This was playing on WVSL, an "Underground Album Rock" station across the lake in Slidell. Wow!! Glad I couldn't get to sleep that night. What Music!!!!! You've probably never heard anything like this before anywhere but you need to hear it. I used to dig this out late at night at college parties and let it roll from "Seven Trumpets" through "Infinity" It got some interesting cross room glances and a few eye rolls for a while, but when Irene Pappas got about thirty seconds into her deal........the place got quiet and the eye contact got alternately suggestive, shocked or accommodative. By the time she was through (man was she through) it was like watching the fruition of some mating ritual on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. (OK Animal Planet for you children out there). Let's just say this...All the seats were no longer occupied and the pairs had scooted off to their own private venues. Ah the power of suggestion. Great memories with this powerful music. Four Horsemen is one of the top ten rock songs of all time in my book. Too bad so many people never heard it. Don't let your kids listen to this with you. It's just one more thing they'd never be able to believe about you.

5 out of 5 stars BAND'S HISTORY.......2006-06-01

INTRODUCTION
The story of "Aphrodite's Child" starts in Greece during the early sixties, in the time that the local music scene is quickly developing a new movement, usually referred to as beat or garage music. Many young musicians and groups emerge in search of a new sound, breaking away from tradional Greek bouzouki and taking inspiration from similar movements in Western pop-scenes.
All members of Aphrodite's Child had been playing in different local groups before moving to Paris. Most notably Vangelis Papathanassiou already formed a highly successful band during his high school years, "The Forminx" (1963 to 1966), while Demis Roussos has been part of bands such as "The Idols" and "We five".
During 1967 Vangelis and Demis form an ensemble together with Lucas Sideras (drums) and Argyris Koulouris (guitars), sometimes referred to as "The Papathanassiou Set". They record a demo with two songs, "Plastics nevermore" and "The other people". Impressed with the demo, Philips Records in Greece proposes to have the group try their luck in England...

1968
Early in 1968 Vangelis, Demis and Lucas travel from Greece to England in search for a better creative environment. Back in Greece a military regime has taken over the government, and just as many other Greek artists they decide to leave their country. Argyris Koulouris has to stay behind to fulfil his army duty. Although aiming to travel to England, Vangelis, Demis and Lucas first get in trouble as they are not allowed to enter the UK due to their work-permits, and then get stuck in Paris due to a transportation strike. By that time they decide to stay in Paris, and sign up with the Mercury record label as the band "Aphrodite's Child", with the help of Philips producer Pierre Sberro.
Their first single "Rain and tears", based on a Canon by Pachelbel and released in May 1968, immediately strikes gold and becomes a huge hit. The song plays in France during the student riots, and is an instant success in France and other countries in Europe. Due to the success of the single it is time to record their first album "End of the world". The title song of the album, released in October 1968, becomes their second single. A third single "Valley of sadness" is also shortly issued in France, but that is quickly withdrawn.

1969
To support their concerts and appearances in Italy, in January the band releases the songs "Lontano dagli occhi" and "Quando l'amore diventa poesia" as a single. Both songs are sung in Italian and recorded on occasion of the Italian San Remo music festival.
Back in Paris Vangelis prepares the release of another single, "I want to live", an arrangement of the song "Plaisir' d'amour". The release of the single in June is another big success in Europe, especially in France and Holland.
The success of the album "End of the world" calls for the release of another, so Vangelis, Demis and Lucas go back into the studio. What did not seem possible a year before now finally happens, the three Greeks, still astonished with their sudden success travel to London to record their next album "It's five o'clock" in the Trident Studios.
The first single from this album "Let me love, let me live", released in October 1969 rises to a number one position in the French charts, but it is the B-side "Marie Jolie" that is most popular in the rest of Europe. The title track "It's five o'clock" quickly follows the same path, released in December 1969 it does well in the charts of many European countries.
Shortly after the release of the album the band starts touring in Spain and Italy, but this time without Vangelis who prefers to stay in the studio. To replace Vangelis on keyboards fellow Greek Harris Chalkitis enforces the band on stage. In the meantime Vangelis works on his very first solo project, the score to the Henry Chapier film "Sex Power".

1970
While the band is touring to promote their latest album, Vangelis firmly sets himself in the studio in Paris. He uses his time among others to prepare for the bands next album, a concept album of which the recording will start later that year. In the meantime he finds himself composing the theme to that years "Rose d'or" festival, a theme performed by the orchestra of Raymond Lefevre. Also Vangelis produced a single for French single Paul Labbey, and around this time he probably also composed a song for fellow Greek artist Tassos Papastamatis.
Before the group would go back into the studio to record their third album, the record company insists on another single release, which becomes "Spring, summer, winter and fall". Released in August the epic song quickly becomes another big hit in Europe. Then the recording of the final Aphrodite's Child album can finally begin....

1971
By the time Vangelis, Demis and Lucas start working on the their third album (666) Argyris Koulouris joins the band after fulfilling his army duty in Greece. The conceptual album "666" is based on a part of the New Testament, The Apocalypse of St. John and is conceived by Vangelis and Costas Ferris. The entire album takes more than a year to record and complete, and when it was finally ready for release, the band has already split up and each member working on solo albums.
Demis records his first solo single "We shall dance" (with Lucas on drums), and releases his first solo album "On the Greek side of my mind". Lucas also started working on his first solo album, which he released the next year titled "One day".
Vangelis in the meantime records the score for "L'apocalypse des animaux", his first collaborative work with the French director Frédéric Rossif. He also releases a single with his girlfriend Vilma Ladopoulou, performing with Arghyris Koulouris using the pseudonym "Alpha Beta".
Production problems for "666" are numerous, as the band members were not on very good terms during the recording sessions. Then Mercury, the band's record label starts objecting to the specific content of the album, and although Vangelis refuses to remove offending tracks (such as 'oo' Infinity) the album is brought back to the released issue of 80 minutes.

1972
One single makes it off the album, "Break/Babylon" is released in November, but that can not turn the album into a commercial success at the time. Today however the experimental "666" has received widespread acknowledgement and is regarded as a classic work and milestone in progressive rock!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY PERFECT !!!.......2006-05-19

Aphrodite's Child was a Greek rock band formed in 1968 by vocalist Demis Roussos, multi-instrumentalist Vangelis Papathanassiou, drummer Lukas Sideras and guitarist Argyris "Silver" Koulouris.

The band's first two albums, "End of the World" and "It's Five O'Clock", combined a very '60s Euro-pop sounding with Greek folk music elements. The former album featured the song "Rain and Tears", a reworking of Pachelbel's Canon in D major. The song was a minor hit in the United Kingdom, but did far better in France, where the band was based, as well as the rest of Europe. Other European hits included "Marie Jolie", "I Want to Live", and "Spring, Summer, Winter, and Fall" from 1969 and 1970 respectively.

666
Vangelis started working on this album in 1970, because the contract with Mercury demanded a third album. The record company had doubts about the concept, which was very progressive, so they asked for a new single first. After "Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall" had been released the group started to record 666, joined by Silver Koulouris who's initial participation in Aphrodite's Child couldn't be because he had had to fulfill his duties in the Greek Army.
There was quite a bit of controversy surrounding the album at the time of its release. This led to boycotts on certain radio stations. One of the reasons for this, was a remark on the album's sleeve stating that the album was recorded under the influence of "Sahlep", which was interpreted as being either a drug or a demon. It actually is an unalcoholic beverage which includes Sahlep powder (a spice) as ingredient. Another reason was the song "Infinity" which has Irene Papas making certain noises one would normal not allow to leave the bedroom.
The blood-red cover with the number of the Beast prominently displayed in black and white was striking, and brought immediate accusations of occultism from various quarters. Any suspicions of occultism could be dispersed by simply reading the lyrics, which were faithfully based on the "John's Book of Revelations".
The music itself was an impressive display of Vangelis' abilities, combining psychedelic and progressive rock with ethnic instruments, choral chanting, recitations, and a very advanced use of synthesizers and keyboards for the time.
Today the experimental "666" has received widespread acknowledgement and is regarded as a classic work and milestone in progressive rock!
One more thing: Koulouris' guitar playing is BRILLIANT, ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT !!!

PS 1

The concept of the album is about the most complex and controversial Book of the Bible, "Saint John's Book of Revelations" also known as "The Apocalypse"; it's important to notice that 666 is considered the first properly concept album.

When 666 was recorded the problems inside the band were leading to the inevitable split, mostly because Roussos and Sideras wanted to continue doing commercial music as in their previous albums and Vangelis was decided to take a more complex path, so 666 was really their last attempt to maintain the classic formation of the band allowing Vangelis to compose a real progressive and complex album, but it was too late for the band, and 666 was their last album, an excellent way to close the short story of APHRODITE'S CHILD.

It's hard to describe the music because there's no other band with a similar sound or style; the Greek influence is also different than the usual (don't expect something catchy or folksy as Zorba the Greek).

PS 2

My favourite tracks are:
-Babylon
-The Four Horsemen
-Aegian Sea
-The Battle of the Locusts / Do it
-The Beast
-Altamont
-The Wedding of the Lamb
-Hic and Nunc
-All the seats were occupied
-Break

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Greek prog/psych/space rock from Vangelis Papthanassiou (aka Vangelis).......2006-05-13

My first exposure to the music on this 1971 release was through the Supernatural Fairy Tales prog rock box set put out by Rhino in 1996. After having listened to this incredible double CD set in its entirety, I am not sure why the Rhino folks picked The System/Babylon to represent this album. There are much better pieces on the album in my opinion - The Four Horsemen for example or maybe Aegian Sea.

The core musicians on this album include Vangelis (organ, piano, flute, percussion, vibes, and backing vocals), Demis Roussos (bass, vocals); Lucas Sideras (drums, vocals); and Silver Kouloris (guitars and percussion). There is a host of supporting musicians too, including Harris Halkitis (bass, tenor sax, conga drums, and vocals); Michele Ripoche (trombone, tenor sax); John Forst (narration); Yannis Tsarouchis (Greek Text); and Irene Pappas (vocal on Infinity).

The musical styles used on this album include a little prog rock and a ton of psychedelic rock, although there are some excellent spacey passages too. The 24 tracks are spread across 2 CDs and more or less flow together as one large song-cycle suite. The music covers a broad spectrum of emotions and dynamic ranges and include full blown rave-ups along with very dreamy passages. Although I enjoy all of the music on the 2 CDs, my favorite tracks include Aegian Sea (this haunting and spacey piece is simply incredible), The Four Horseman, and the mega 19'19" jam All the Seats were Occupied. Of all the pieces on the album, the track Infinity is very different and some may find that it makes for difficult listening - Irene Pappas seems to favor an avant-garde approach when it comes to using her voice. Overall, the music is absolutely incredible however.

With regard to the lyrics, they are alternately apocalyptic and flower power and reach a peak on the great track Altamont. Although I may be way off base here (I am a Biologist not an English major) I believe that the author of this piece is viewing the horrific tragedy that unfolded at the Rolling Stones concert held at the Altamont Speedway (1969) from the lofty heights of "the high Mountain" (having actually achieved spiritual enlightenment). Based on what I have read, many people view the Altamont tragedy as the spiritual end of the 1960s. The imagery used in Altamont is simply incredible and includes a lamb with seven eyes, a beast with seven horns, and seven bowls filled with anger. Although I was only four years old (and completely oblivious), 1971 must have been a pretty frightening time.

All in all, this is a simply incredible album that pushes the boundaries of rock to the breaking point. Highly recommended to all fans of psychedelic rock with touches of prog.

Because it focuses on some of the country's most commercially successful artists of the last two decades, this smoother-than-usual Putumayo sampler of contemporary Greek music will disappoint listeners in search of the kind of joyous party ambiance you may find in a touristy Athens taverna. The mellifluous strains of the traditional bouzouki are a constant presence, but the twelve songs here boast the sophisticated arrangements and lilting melodies of European pop at its cosmopolitan best. A somber ballad with touches of accordion, veteran singer/songwriter George Dalaras' "Sou Axize Mia Kaliteri Agalia" dazzles you with an opening line of exquisite irony ("I don't care/Who you're listening to this song with tonight") while the raspy vocals of Glykeria turn "Ta Ziliarika Sou Matia" into a visceral anthem of romantic obsession. Songs by lesser known artists such as Kostas Makedonas and Theodosia Stiga are equally compelling. A few serious omissions: the endearingly anarchic Dionisis Savopoulos, the Middle-East-meets-techno shenanigans of Ana Vissi and the delicate ballads of Arleta--the Greek equivalent of Joni Mitchell. --Ernesto Lechner

Very good CD with good music and original old songs. Verry happy with this C/D

5 out of 5 stars They gave us the word 'odyssey'.......2006-12-30

Putumayo's excellent "Athens to Andalucia" whet my appetite for Greek music with its three songs from Glykeria,George Dalaras&Anemos. It was a brief, tantalizing taste, and I waited patiently for Putumayo to release a Greek compilation.Luckily,it did.

Greece is the cradle of Western civilization, with Plato,Aristotle,Aristophanes&Sophocles--and they have great contemporary music."Greece:A Musical Odyssey" is an enjoyable journey through contemporary Greek folk/pop music. It's perfect for relaxing with baklava, ouzo&dolmas.

Highlights-
1)Eleni-Not everybody has read Homer's "Iliad." Considering the state of education, most teenagers haven't read this classic.Kostas Mantzios sings a beautiful song about Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world who caused the Trojan War.He breathes new life into an ancient legend.
2)Pino Pino-A joyful little song comparing love with wine.
3)Sou Axize Mia Kaliteri Agalia-With a reggae beat&an accordion,George Dalaras sings an ironic love song.
4)Ragizi Apopse-A lilting, folksy song about heartbreak. It's one of Children of the Revolution's more traditional song.
5)An m'agapas, tha s'agapo-Very melancholy and beautiful.Pantelis Thalassinos has long hair like Yanni, but makes better music.
6)Ela Mia Nichta-A frothy, spritely song though it is about loneliness.
7)Ah,feggaraki mou-A celebrity duet,but a lovely one.

"Greece" is one of Putumayo's best European compilations (along with "Music from the Wine Lands"&"Euro Lounge")If you want to try different European music, give this album a spin!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with some unique and great songs from Greece.......2006-12-19

Although I'm from Greece, i usually don't listen to Greek music. I gave this compilation a shot because the Putumayo series are usually far above the average and tend to be excellent :) . I wasn't disappointed! This CD contains some really great songs, which have never been in the same album before. It's not about music to dance, it's about music to listen and relax or sing along. A bit of ethnic, a bit of world and a bit of Greek of course :) All ethnic music fans should listen to this...

Ok, not all of the songs are that good but as a compilation it's surely worth buying and listening. Some of the best songs are: "Eleni", "Pino Pino", "Ragizi Apopse" and "To Parelthon Thimithika" .

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! .......2006-11-04

My husband is a lover of all things Greek. He vacationed there every year for at least 10 years and we spent three weeks once traveling through Greece. This CD makes us feel like we're back in a Taverna enjoying the sights and sounds of Greece. We love it and even the kids enjoy listening to it.

I'm teaching Greek at an elementary school, and play this disc for the students while they take notes, etc. We all love it! Back at home, my own kids spin this disc nearly every day. Very relaxing, uplifting and romantic. Putamayo does a great job with these compilations. Efharistoh!

1 out of 5 stars yuck, Yuck, YUCK -- save your money.......2006-09-14

Mono, thin, narrow band, with poor s/n level. I pulled out the cd and looked to see if it was a cd-r or rw someone had pirated from an old worn out 8 track or using a $1.98 microphone from Radio Shack.

1 out of 5 stars Mono recording of poor quality, seems pirated........2006-01-10

I am so sorry about this CD! I love the soundtrack, I love Zorba the Greek and Theodorakis music, but this CD is completely mono. I have a couple of copies of the original vinyl recording. On the original the dialogue is mono and the music is stereo. Despite the cracks and pops on the original vinyl, the overall sound quality is better on my old records and the stereo imaging is wonderful vs. the mono one dimensional quality of this sad excuse for a CD. Amazon should check with the copyright holders, I strongly suspect this is a pirated copy and a poor quality one at that! I would love to buy a true stereo recording. Meanwhile please make the mono recording nature of the CD obvious to buyers.

5 out of 5 stars Zorba the Greek.......2005-08-15

This is it! The original soundtrack from THE BEST MOVIE EVER! It is exactly the same as the original, with dialogues of Anthony Quinn (ZORBA) and Alan Bates. Definitely a keeper. I have looked for this item on CD for a long time. When the theme song plays I HAVE to get up and do the circle dance that I grew up doing with my Greek friends in Detroit.
Would recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of Zorba the Greek. I think Zorba was Anthony Quinn's finest role.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money !!!!!!!!!.......2005-03-31

I can't believe what I'm hearing!!!
This is the worst piece of music I've ever heard.
I've also heard other Theodorakis Cd's and it's the same thing.
Waste of my money.

I think I'll stick with my good old Ennio Moricone's Cd's.

I prefer real music...

3 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack with Not-So-Great Sound.......2004-03-02

The soundtrack is spectacular but the CD left me with two complaints. First, I could do without the dialog introduction to every song. Second, the recording quality is far less than par. Less these issues, I would still recommend Zorba the Greek!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars perfect score for a perfect movie.......2007-02-19

Carol Reed's veteran cinematographer Robert Krasker's quirky angles under Reed's direction perfectly framed the ready-made-for-an-art designer bombed out shadows and stark, isolated street lights of post-war Vienna and its underworld. Unique to cinema history the whole score (but for some canned incidental cafe music) was just the brilliant zither playing of Anton Karas, adding his nuances to every dramatic transition. Krasker won an Oscar, and Karas was nominated.

The "Third Man Theme" (also known as the "Harry Lime Theme") is alternately brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music--which fits the mood of the story and the film perfectly -- that, once heard, can't be forgotten.

The "Third Man Theme" turned Anton Karas into a wealthy man after 28 years of toiling in obscurity an relative poverty in Vienna.

One night, Carol Reed was passing by a wine tavern where growers offer their own wines for sale directly, and heard Anton Karas's playing in the background. Reed had never heard a zither before and found the sound to be attractive. He approached Karas and persuaded him to play for him at his hotel, and made a recording, which Reed brought back to the studio to test. He liked the effect when the zither's sound was placed against the recorded dialogue and, ignoring the protests of many around him, hired Karas and brought him to London for 12 weeks.

Anton Karas screened the movie hundreds of times, devising music for each scene. The Third Man ended up with a vast amount of music, scored in virtually every scene of its 104 minutes. Ironically, the piece that became known as the "Third Man Theme" was something that Anton Karas had written two decades earlier and hadn't played in over 15 years. As he later explained to Reed, playing the zither for a whole night for tips was hard work, and one tended to play the easiest pieces the most often, to save the fingers.

Other zither players never got it to sound just right. The truth was that as recorded for the movie, "The Third Man Theme" was one of the first practical examples of overdubbing on a hit record, rivaling Les Paul's work--Anton Karas had gotten just the right effect working underneath Reed's kitchen table, and had gotten the piece just right by recording and mixing more than one zither part.

The Third Man was finished and prepared for release, and Reed and the production company, London Films, tried to raise interest in it through the music. None of the record companies, however, was interested in recording Karas or releasing the "Third Man Theme." The music was too strange and different, and although British movies had produced some soundtrack successes in the past, those were usually more conventional light classical pieces, not a jangly piece of music played on a central European folk instrument.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant "ethnic" melodies.......2007-01-22

The tunes on this disc have a nice, comforting sound. Some of the selections are haunting, some have a peasant-liveliness. Nothing great or revolutionary, but plain good zither music, very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Third Man & Other Original Records.......2006-11-10

We bought it for a friend. They loved it.

4 out of 5 stars The first man of the zither.......2006-03-10

The CD didn't sound as good as the movie sound track. Ity sounded a bit rushed as if the sampling during the transfer was not sufficient

5 out of 5 stars This is the one you're looking for........2004-04-26

You've been looking for the original version of the music in "The Third Man", right? Every other CD on the market wouldn't work for you. But lucky for you, this is the one! Don't go wrong.

I enjoyed listening to the CD, but the musical selections weren't interesting enough to inspire repeated play.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic...includes My Big Fat Greek Wedding Songs.......2003-08-20

This is a great cd. It is actually two cd's in the package. One is instrumental (my favorite) and the other has words. The instrumental one has two songs in it that are from the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding (and on the soundtrack). The music is fantastic, upbeat and traditional. Definitely makes you want to dance. The price is also great. Please try it....you will be very, very satisfied!

This is a great collection of traditional Greek music. It also has two songs in it from the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. One CD is only instrumental (my favorite), the other has words. I can only say that I was pleasantly surprised and I have been listening to it non-stop. If you want upbeat, traditional Greek music, definitely buy it. It is well worth it and the price can't be beat!

5 out of 5 stars A True Celebration for this Greek Giant.......2007-01-19

Born in Alexandria and raised in Athens, Demis Roussos is a legend in dealing with European Pop. He has a voice that is as amazing and deep as that of another vocalist who like Demis was always a Big Boy who had troubles with thier size. That man is Meat Loaf Adlay, and both Demis and Meat Loaf sing to a setting of music that is deep and vast.
Demis was the Bassist and Vocalist of Aphrodite's Child, which was a Progressive Rock band that included Vangalis on Keyboards and Piano as well as Organ.
This collection has Hits by Aphrodite's Child and Demis as a Solo Artist, with Demis as a Solo Artist singing in English and French as well as German in this Collection, while English was the premier language of Aphrodite's Child's songs, even though some were in French and Castillano, but not in this collection.
The songs are just remarkable, and the voice of Demis is amazing and romantic, with my favorate songs being Loin Des Yeux, Loin Du Coueur and Lost In Love as well as We Shall Dance and My Reason, while dealing with his solo songs, and in dealing with Aphrodite's Child amd thier songs on this collection, my favorates are It's Five OClock and I Want To Live as well as Rain and Tears.
I recomend this collection as well as his Grandes Exitos album that is avalable, but not on Amazon. That Collection has his biggest hits both in English and Castillano as well as one song in French, which were all huge Hits for this mighty Giant, including four hits for Aphrodite's Child in English, that were hits for the band troughout Europe. Demis Roussos En Español is the closest to Grandes Exitos, for all of the same songs in Castillano that are on Grandes Exitos are on En Español.

5 out of 5 stars excellent recreation of ancient music.......2006-04-25

this cd was all i hoped for. It is beautiful and almost seems to sweep the listener away it is so vividly done. It is steady as an ocean tide the tempos dont change drastically as in modern music but has a peaceful almost philosophical cadence to it. I highly reccomend these recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best Re-Creation of Antique Music.......2006-01-25

This is the album by Ensemble De Organographia (Gayle Stuwe Neuman and Phlip Neuman). Probably you had heard thier CDs "Music of the Ancient Greeks" and "Carnevale! Festive Music of 16th century Italy".
Disc consists of 3 sets of Antique World music. Ancient Greek Music newly founded at Oxyrhinchus in Egypt (world premiere recording); music from ancient city Ugarit (XIII century B.C.) - Sumero-Babylonian music (including oldest notated music in the history of humankind); music of the Egyptians reconstructed after descriptions by Plutarch and Apuleius.
Ensemble De Organographia re-creates this music with such love and unerstanding of the ancient cultures, that you nearly feel the breezes of the Mediterranean sea and see the landscapes of its shores. They perform it as a music of still living folk tradition.
Of course you wouldn`t find here ancient analog of the 5th Beethoven`s symphony:)
The value of this music is that you could understand internal world and spirituality of the ancient people. It`s a miracle...
I had heard different "restorations" of the Music of the Ancient World - and this work by Ensemble De Organographia is simply the best!!! A must for the lover of the Antique culture.
And it`s hard for me to understand why works by Synaulia and Atrium Musicae De Madrid are so popular.
You could find CDs by Ensemble De Organographia on website by North Pacific Music. There you would find sound samples.

My real rate of this CD - 10 stars!!!!

You could also try CD "Music in the Age of the Pyramids" by Rafael Perez Arroyo (released in Europe by NAR). He uses coptic music as a model for reconsruction of the music of the Ancient Egypt.

3 out of 5 stars Summer.......2001-02-12

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fun music, skilled musicians.......2004-05-19

As another reviewer said, this probably is "tourist music," but it's very fun & seems to be mostly authentic Greek folk music, on appropriate instruments. (Except for the last track, where they suddenly bring in a disco beat -- hello??) I only wish these guys wouldn't try to sing -- none of them really has a good voice, though they can carry a tune just fine. To me, it sounds as if the bazouki players are doing double-duty, but I think they should have hired some real singers! Anyhow, all that said, this is a real toe-tapping, fun album & the instrumental playing is great. Several of the tracks are live, and it's overall very worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Good Vocals & Bouzouki Music.......2002-04-11

This CD is definitely good quality Greek music played at restaurants and cafes, what is termed urban popular Greek music, i.e., "just what the tourist asked for". It is not as fiery and passionate as I prefer but excellent singing and playing: yes. If you want to dance a kalamatianos, tsamikos, or zeibekiko: no, can't be done. If you want traditional music with village instruments: look elsewhere, in addition to the bouzouki there are steel guitars, occasional drums and keyboards. No "island music" here. However, many songs are original, written and composed by one of the Athenians who prove to be a very talented group, indeed. I found "M'ena tsigaro" and "The Best of Tsitsanis" very engaging, the first is an original, written by one of the vocalists, the other is the only "rembetika" that I recognize on the CD. Overall, good music for the price. If you're looking for the raw, earthy sound of true "rembetika" --- try the Rounder CD like "Rembetica: Greek Urban Music" or the Markos Vamvakaris from 1930s -1940s, both remakes of original 78 records by the artists themselves.
